Round Three
(this is preceded by round two, followed by round four)

Kazzak stabs his sword into the corpse called Dave and then rips it out sideways, nearly cutting the zombie in half.
Dave takes 6 slashing damage!

The undead attack in eerie silence, inanimate things moving without life or intelligence or animosity, impelled by some fell magic.
Dave tries to retaliate, but its swipes are feeble as the corpse is barely holding together!

Dean attacks Antonius, striking the cleric in the face with a decaying fist!
Antonius takes 7 bludgeoning damage!

Duke attacks Kazzak, too, but the fighter is prepared and sidesteps the slow swings!

Don attacks Berthold, silently scrabbling and tearing with putrescent limbs!
Berthold takes 3 bludgeoning damage!

Despite the mortal wound of the arrow punched down through its dead heart, Dina attacks Sora!
Sora takes 2 bludgeoning damage!

The banging on the rear door of the barn continues!

"We retreat or stay here." Dell calls down to Sora. "I am with you. It is your call."
Sora pummels Dina, walking up the corpse's rotten torso with a series of punches, then rolling back down the decaying body again.
Dina takes 4 bludgeoning damage but does not fall.
"I will not leave the prisoners to this fate!" Sora growls. She kicks the zombie in the knees repeatedly. Bone snaps wetly.
Dina takes 6 bludgeoning damage but remains upright on horribly shattered legs: sure sign that it is magic animating these lifeless things.

Amnestria sympathizes, and tries to set Dina on fire. But the gout of flame she sees toward the zombie misses.
::See what that noise is coming from:: the wizard thinks to her owl familiar. ::On the other side of the barn, I think. Go quickly!::

Meanwhile, on the other side of the house, "By Wee Jas…" Antonius groans in horrified disbelief. These undead things are even worse up close than any he's encountered previously. He adds "Stay down." as he wallops Dave with his sturdy warhammer. Bits of festering flesh spatter onto both of the heroes.
Dave takes 11 bludgeoning damage and collapses.
Mercifully, the desecrated body does stay down.

Dell jumps out of the loft, landing heavily behind Dina.
Dell takes 3 falling damage.
Dell whips out his rapier and sinks it up to the hilt in Dina's wetly spongy torso.
Dina takes 12 piercing damage but STILL does not stop moving!

Grallaria flaps to get more height and then glides over the barn. She reports to Amnestria ::Big Person tries to climb Big Tree::
By long association, Amnestria is able to interpret that the owl is saying that another assailant - a zombie, the wizard suspects - is banging on the barn's door or wall; owls don't have a great ability to distinguish doors, knocking or hammering looks most like an earth-bound creature trying to scramble up a tree, and a barn is just a big tree to her.

"Reynald, bring the crossbow downstairs!" In the extremity of his distress, Berthold calls his retainers into danger. Shouting even louder so his companions outside can hear, the knight exclaims, "Fall back to the house!" As he does this, Berthold slashes repeatedly into Don, the one zombie that has managed to make its way inside the house so far.
Don takes 10 slashing damage.

Reynald, Guilbert, and Olyena (in that order) thunder most of the way down the stairs and stop, horrified, before they get to the bottom at the sight of the undead thing just a few feet away from them. They know that horrible death is held back from them only by their boss, and he is clearly badly hurt.

Amnestria continues her attack on the animated corpse, reasoning that if she can help Sora put the thing down, they can then help the others more effectively. Another Fire Bolt is launched from the tip of her wand.

The rotten fist catches Antonius squarely across the face with a wet, bone-jarring crack. He reels half a step, vision flashing white as the blow lands directly over the old scar that runs along his cheek and jaw. The scar splits open under the impact, a thin line of fresh blood tracing through sweat and grave dirt. For a heartbeat the cleric’s balance falters, shield dipping as the corpse’s dead hand leaves a smear of decay across his skin.

Antonius catches himself before he falls, planting the glowing shield hard into the ground to steady his balance. He tastes blood, spits it aside, and looks back up at the dead thing that struck him. Around him the night has become a nightmare of pounding blows, scraping claws, and the relentless hammering at the barn door behind the others. Kazzak’s sword has nearly cut Dave in half, yet the corpse still twitches and claws forward. That sight troubles the cleric more than the blood on his own face.

"By Wee Jas… stay down," he growls, voice ragged with pain and disbelief.

Recovering his footing, Antonius brings Final Measure around in a brutal horizontal arc. The Warhammer whistles through the cold night air toward Dave’s ruined torso, the cleric striking with the grim determination of a man who has buried too many bodies to tolerate one refusing its grave. Even as he swings, he remains anchored shoulder-to-shoulder beside Kazzak, shield raised and stance locked, unwilling to give the undead a gap to exploit while more shapes shuffle out of the darkness around the farm.

Cornered in the humble farmer’s homestead with the animated mass of rotting flesh threatening himself and the two prisoners, The young knight called out to his retinue, "Reynald, bring the crossbow downstairs! Guilbert get down here!" To the others he exclaimed "Fall back to the house!"

And as he cried out orders and appealed to his companions, he attempted to cut down the walking dead.

Dell seeing the corpse attacking Sora and not having a good angle for a shot will shoulder his bow a drop down behind the corpse. He draw his rapier as soon as he lands and drive a thrust straight at the corpse he just landed behind. After sliding his rapier into the corpse he will look to Sora "We retreat or stay here. I am with you. It is your call."

CancerMan says:
OOC:
I think Don and Berthold are already in the house.
OOC:
You are absolutely right, CancerMan. For some reason I was mirroring the situation of Antonius and Kazzak with Berthold’s and Sora’s.Since he is in the house, he would not retreat further. So my description of his actions is completely wrong. I’ll adjust my previous post, without deleting anything.

OOC:
Whew, zombies are terrible, particularly with their undead fortitude.

@matmaisan - Your noncombatant NPC retainers are effectively extra HP for Berthold (by virtue of being additional targets for enemies), but remember that a knight's retainers "can perform mundane tasks for you, but they do not fight for you, will not follow you into obviously dangerous areas (such as dungeons), and will leave if they are frequently endangered or abused."

@rpgventurer - please do us the honors of starting round four with Kazzak's turn.

After delivering a satisfying blow to his enemy, Berthold saw the hint of Reynald’s presence by the stairs. He’d not soon forget the lad’s look of horror, as he observed the carnage in the farmhouse’s main room.

"Leave it there, and go barricade yourselves above!"
OOC:
Most of my orders stemmed from my misunderstanding the layout of the scene. Picturing Berthold outside with Sora, I’d thought to call the retainers to help secure the ground floor, by bringing weapons down and, if needed, moving furniture around to block doors or windows. Having now adjusted the layout of the scene, he just wanted the crossbow delivered to the ground floor, because he still hopes that if he lives long enough, the party will barricade itself in this room and hold this position. No intention to use them as added targets, or get them involved in the fighting.

Round Four
(this is preceded by round three, followed by round five)

Finally able to focus on the latest arrival, Kazzak slashes into Duke, bits of the zombie's flesh flying away with each stroke.
Duke takes 6 slashing damage!

Dean and Duke continue to attack Kazzak, but the heavily-armored fighter keeps them both at bay for a few moments longer.

Dina attacks Sora, raking her eyes with jagged fingernails!
Sora takes 8 bludgeoning damage!

Don attacks Berthold, slamming the knight in the head when his sword gets momentarily stuck in its guts.
Berthold takes 7 bludgeoning damage and falls, dying!
His retainers wail in horror!

The last zombie continues to pound on the back door to the barn, which begins to crack under the onslaught!

"Hells!" Sora swears, continuing to batter the decomposing corpse.
Dina takes 6 damage and though part of its head flies off, it does not fall!
Sora kicks it again.
Dina takes 5 damage, sways, and keeps on swinging!

Amnestria calls out the window, confirming what Sora was hearing behind her: "One's breaking in behind you, Sora!" Then she hustles downstairs to investigate the reason for the knight's retainers' wails. They're standing in her way on the stairs, looking into the kitchen/dining area in horror. Amnestria pushes past them, sees Berthold lying dead or dying at a zombie's feet, and snaps "Get back upstairs!" As the retainers move to obey, Amnestria intones the spell. Magic condenses the air, forming thick water vapor that rolls out from just inside the front door. It flows out the front door toward the wagon and into the kitchen, engulfing the knight's body, the zombie and flowing back towards Amnestria and the servants on the stairs. The wizard retreats back up the stairs to escape the fog.

"Hold the line, Kazzak!" Antonius calls to the battle brother at his side. "One grave at a time." Then he addresses their foes: "The bell has not finished tolling. Back to your rest." His swing catches Duke hard on the shoulder.
Duke takes 5 bludgeoning damage!

Dell stabs Dina again and again.
Dina takes 14 piercing damage and STILL DOES NOT STOP!

Grallaria flies back to the farmhouse and dives at the zombie Duke, drawing some of its attention away from Kazzak.

Writhing on the floor, Berthold fears that his vision is failing along with his organs...but it's just the fog.
Berthold has 2 failed death saves.

Reynald, Guilbert, and Olyena run back upstairs out of the fog and barricade themselves in the southern bedroom, as both Berthold and Amnestria commanded.

Seeing Dave finally collapse into a heap of broken flesh and ruined bone, Antonius wastes no time admiring the result. The cleric shifts his footing immediately, blood still trickling from the reopened scar on his face as he moves to support Kazzak against the remaining undead. The glow from his shield throws long shadows across the farmyard, illuminating the two corpses pressing in on the dwarf from either side.

"Hold the line, Kazzak!" Antonius calls, his voice cutting through the cries of Berthold's retainers and the relentless pounding from the barn door. "One grave at a time."

Antonius's eyes flick briefly toward the farmhouse where Berthold has fallen and then toward the barn where the cracking door threatens to give way. Concern gnaws at him, but he forces it aside. If he and Kazzak can finish these dead things quickly, they can still turn the tide elsewhere.

"The bell has not finished tolling," he growls at the shambling corpses. "Back to your rest." Then he plants his glowing shield firmly beside Kazzak once again, presenting an unbroken wall of steel, faith, and stubborn determination against the encroaching dead. Antonius raises Final Measure high overhead and brings it crashing down toward Duke with all the force his weary muscles can muster.

Grallaria swoops down to harass the zombies around Kazzak, flapping her wings in their eyes and darting this way and that.

"One's breaking in behind you, Sora!" warns Amnestria, before she pulls her attention away from the window and moves to investigate the wailing from downstairs. What in the Hells was that racket?

At the base of the stairs, it takes the wizard a brief moment for her eyes to adjust and realize that the rotting figure standing just inside the room is not Berthold. Mentally cycling through her options, Amnestria yells to the crying retainers, "Get back upstairs!" Whether or not the nobleman's servants heed her words, she intones the arcane recipe to envelop the common room in thick fog and prepares to retreat back to the second floor.
OOC:
Grallaria will Help Kazzak.

Amnestria will cast Fog Cloud. If she has movement left over, she'll climb the stairs to the landing. Hopefully Bertie's retainers know where the stairs are!
