Chapter 4.2: The Dim Journey to Orlane

Berthold will assist Dell in his ministrations, offering words of comfort a laying his hands on the wounded companions if they require an additional boost of healing.

Before going to rest, Berthold will have a talk with the captives, and make sure they’ve been able to eat, relieve themselves, and settle down to sleep, despite their bindings.

OOC:
Sora and Antonius seem to have recovered all lost hit points thanks to Dell’s intervention. Berthold still is one hp down, so if no one else is in need of healing he will fully heal Olyena (no need to spend a healing kit use) and top his own ho back to full, still retaining 1hp of healing of circumstances during the night require more healing.

I think the captives ought to sleep under the same roof as the party. No telling if blacks kobolds or someone else might show up and free them while we sleep in the next building. Also it wasn’t humane to have them sleep by the dead bodies of their former companions. The knight will have Guilbert and Reynald watch over the women, if necessary.
Also I believe we should bury the ten bodies before leaving, and we could use the two captives and his own men to do that quickly in the morning.

OOC:
I'm so sorry! I purposefully didn't mention healer's kits during Amnestria's time because I was RPing her inexperience with adventuring. That shouldn't have stopped me from saying something OOC, though. I'm okay with Dell retroactively saying he's had one, of course. If Dell needs some funds to cover the cost of having purchased a kit, I can donate up to 1 gold and 3 silver.

I'm satisfied with the food distribution, too.

As for the length of watch shifts, if we're still interested in 4 shifts I'm fine with spending three hours per.

OOC:
I am happy with rationing output. As for the healing kits I feel Antonius would have had some before traveling to Hochoch, but it slipped my mind when building his character. He probably, like his rations, used all his healing kits and in the rush to leave for Orlane forgot to replenish.

Replenishment of basics is a good excuse for our group to be arriving in Orlane.
With the decision made to remain at the homestead until morning, Antonius quietly sheds his armor and sets it aside. Before turning to the dead, he takes a short rest among his companions, tending to his own wounds and those of the others as best he can. Using the supplies from Dell’s healer’s kit, he carefully cleans cuts, binds injuries, and checks on those who suffered the worst of the fighting. "My thanks, Dell," he says with a respectful nod as he returns the kit. "It has served us well today." Only once he is satisfied that everyone is as fit as circumstances allow does he rise to his feet and turn to the task awaiting him.

Gathering a spade, mattock, and whatever other tools can be found around the abandoned farm, Antonius makes his way beyond the edge of the clearing and into the shadow of the treeline. His warhammer remains within arm’s reach at all times, planted head-down in the earth beside him whenever he works. There he begins the slow, solemn labor of digging graves for the fallen bandits. He works without complaint and with little regard for who the dead were in life; in the eyes of Wee Jas, death is the great equalizer, and all souls deserve proper passage. The cleric speaks scarcely a word throughout the labor, save to offer a quiet "Thank you" to any companion who lends a hand with the digging or carrying of bodies. As the afternoon wears on, the steady sound of steel biting into earth drifts back toward the homestead, accompanied only by the scrape of a shovel and the silent vigil of the warhammer standing nearby like a grave marker awaiting its charge.

Dell will head out with Antonious and help as much as he can. He isn't much into physical labor but he wants to be able to bond with his new companions when possible.

Dell tends to the wounded adventurers and Berthold heals Olyena and makes the last of his wounds magically disappear. Then, as Antonius and Dell begin work on interring the dead bandits, Berthold takes the bound women into the farmhouse and begins to write the letter intended for Olpert Razorsson.

Luckily the former occupants (the Jarl family) left some of their larger tools, including their pitchfork, saw, mattock, and shovel. Digging the graves would've been impossible without the mattock and shovel. Antonius is meticulous and painstaking in preparing graves properly; each grave takes a full man hour to dig, so Dell's assistance with the mattock to chop through tree roots and break up the deeper dirt halves the time.

As the afternoon sun wanes and the early twilight falls on the clearing, the cleric and the rogue are still digging. Berthold talks to the captives at length about his expectations that they will leave in the morning and head straight to Hochoch to deliver the letter to Olpert. It becomes clear in this conversation that neither of the bandits can read. In addition to the deep fear and anger they harbor to the heroes, the women have a mixture of awe and resentment for this knight with his servants and his fancy writing.

Antonius and Dell do bond over their shared labor; of the several hours they are out in the woods disposing of the bodies, five full hours of that time are just spent digging. It is not an ordeal either of them will soon forget.
OOC:
If you'd like to play out more of that afternoon/evening of conversation, I encourage you to take as much time as you want doing so in the Side Conversations thread.
As night falls and full darkness descends, Antonius casts Light on a low-hanging tree branch so they can see what they're doing...and keep an eye on the last two corpses. Thankfully, they do not show any signs of movement.

Sora is a couple of hours into the first watch when the cleric dispels the illumination. He and the rogue re-enter the clearing and return the tools to the barn, hands freshly blistered and with aching arms and backs. They nod to Sora as she walks around the farmhouse, watching for movement and listening for any untoward sounds.

Inside the farmhouse, Amnestria has also created magical Light so that she can pore carefully over her books. Grallaria, usually a little dozy during the day, sits alertly on her shoulder and watches everyone with interest. Having spent most of the afternoon sharpening and oiling his weapons while staring levelly at the two bound captives sitting at the kitchen table with the wizard, Kazzak talks recipes with Olyena (he has strong opinions on what to do and what not to do in the kitchen, as everywhere else). Guilbert and Reynald do their best to not be in the way and to assist Olyena, who has made a stew out of the meat portion of everyone's contributed rations. Berthold continues to converse with the bandit women, attempting to cajole or berate them into changing their ways.

Once it's ready, everyone enjoys the meal (Olyena takes a steaming bowl out to Sora, which she eats while walking the perimeter). Afterwards, there is a feeling of warm bonhomie - even Ene and Fern seem less suspicious of the party's motives after a warm meal. Dell is starting to feel a sated torpor when Sora enters and taps him to start his shift on watch. He stretches to relieve aching muscles and then steps out into the dark night.

The moon is just rising over the treetops, helping Dell to see dim shapes of large objects so he can navigate in the dark. But there's still a danger of tripping on uneven ground.
OOC:
@mathias0077 - since Dell is human, how do you want him to conduct his watch shift? Hunker down in one place and listen, or use a light source (natural or magical) to be able to see any potential threats as he keeps moving?

OOC:
Amnestria has a lamp that she can offer to anyone that needs it.
Jun 1, 2026 8:16 pm
The knight was very grateful for Antonius’ medical ministrations. He was relieved to see that what had been a life-threatening wound a few hours ago was not as severe as he had feared. However, he was still humbled by the encounter, and the realization that a band of unruly thugs could, with a bit of luck, take down warriors of great quality and skill. He would ponder this in next morning’s prayers.

Berthold encouraged Guilbert and Reynald to assist the others during the afternoon. In particular he told them to provide help to Antonius and Dell, but the lack of sufficient tools meant that they were of limited usefulness. Reynald, despite his duties and the vigour of youth, felt as though such work was below his standing. Guilbert had no such feelings of superiority and quite enjoyed the company of the stern priest and the foreign scout, but ended up returning to the farmstead and keeping Olyena company.

Berthold spent an inordinate amount of time talking to the two captives, in an earnest, but probably misguided, attempt to find some kind of redemption for the two. After he had sealed his letter he went to rest, after having made sure that the others knew when to wake him for his vigil.

OOC:
Would the loft be a good vantage point? As the moon keeps rising the light should get better. If not is the a roof over the porch he could sit on?
Jun 1, 2026 10:19 pm
After Kazzak completes his weapons inspection and preparation -- a ritual performed to his tutor's strict instructions -- he cleans his boots with the same exacting rigor. Most of the blood and gore were wiped off outside after the battle, but the Dwarf noticed blemishes when he sat down in the kitchen. His belt rag quickly returns his boots to their original dark brown hue.

As he occasionally stands for a check out the window at Antonius and Dell, he silently ponders the situation. Those bandits don't deserve the dignity of a burial. Let the vultures and wolves feast on them.

After the meal, he thanks Olyena, despite the lack of proper seasonings, which, of course, isn't her fault. When not on watch or sleeping, he keeps checking his view from the nearest window.

With the graves finally completed and the last mound of earth carefully smoothed over, Antonius turns his attention to the tools that had served him through the long afternoon. He cleans each one thoroughly, wiping away dirt and moisture before applying a light coat of oil to protect the metal, then returns them to their proper places within the homestead. Finding a wash basin and what water he can spare, he scrubs away the sweat, grime, and grave-soil from both himself and his clothes. With his usual garments still damp from cleaning, he dons the dark, formal vestments of Wee Jas for the evening meal, the ruby accents standing in sharp contrast to the humble surroundings of the farmhouse.

Before anyone begins to eat, Antonius rises and offers a simple prayer of thanks. "Lady of Death and Magic, we thank you for the shelter above us, the food before us, and the companions beside us. May we meet tomorrow’s trials with discipline, wisdom, and courage." The prayer is brief but sincere, and afterwards he settles into the easy camaraderie that follows a hard day's labor and a warm meal. Even the captive bandits seem less hostile beneath the glow of lantern light and the comfort of full stomachs.

Later, as the others begin drifting toward their beds and watches are exchanged, Antonius sits quietly near the hearth. Piece by piece he cleans and inspects his equipment, carefully oiling leather straps, polishing the fittings of his armor, and wiping his warhammer free of the day's dirt and blood until the weapon gleams once more in the firelight. Satisfied that everything is in order for the road ahead, he retires for several hours of rest.

Complementing Antonius’ prayer, the knight raised his voice "And may Heironeous, Paragon of Valour, steel our resolve, and give us courage in the trials of the morrow." He then also enjoyed dinner in the company of this odd assortment of adventurers.

Before retiring for the evening he spent some time with his retinue, who helped him out of his armor, and cared for his gear. Berthold busied himself with sharpening his blade, while he talked to Reynald — explaining the finer points of the day’s battles, and of the party’s performance under attack — and exchanging good natured anecdotes of the day with Guilbert, busy cleaning the knights boots and surcoat, and Olyena, who meticulously copied the letter the baronet had written into a large notebook she kept, containing her liege’s diary.

The quartet were still finding their way in this new assembly of people, taking this moment to share their views about the experience, and about the individuals and the collective. They did so in whispers in the room that had served as Olyena’s place of recovery, so as to not disturb the others. They were still quite shy in this new environment.

He then bade his servants good a night and descended, sitting next to Antonius in silence, contemplating the fire, and occasionally glancing at the captives, for which hasty bedding had been made with some hay brought from the stable.

"A good day’s work, I reckon. Difficulties await us, but ours is a decent band of people." He talked with any of the other adventurers staying or coming through the kitchen. Not a very prolific talker, he was content to hear out his new companions and offer responses to the questions the others might have.

mathias0077 says:

OOC:
Sure, the loft will work well. He'll have a good view of the entire yard in front of the house, and if he cranes his head out to look east, he would be able to see things moving between the stalks of plants in the fields. But to a human, the darkness under the trees encircling the farm is absolute; he will only see something once it leaves the trees.

Dell climbs back into his familiar lookout post in the loft of the barn. He watches closely, scanning from side to side, as three hours pass.

It is shortly after the third hour of his watch has completed - judging by the wheeling of the stars overhead - that Dell hears something moving in the darkness, crashing through the underbrush.

After helping with the grave and the fine conversation with Antonious, Dell finished his his meal and decided to take a nap before his watch. He is awakened by Sora for his turn at watch. He dons his armor, belts on his rapier and grads his trusty bow and heads to the loft.

As he sits in the loft he checks his bow string to make sure it is in good condition and checks the draw to make sure it is firm. He thinks on the conversation he had with Antonious. The cleric said some very wise things and he is glad he to took the time to get know him better. Then he hears the sound of something crashing through the underbrush. He has a lot of experience in the outdoors from his time growing up with father and Chase. He doesn't get to excited it is probably just a boar. Those things could make a god awful racket moving through the woods.

Dell will keep his cool and nock an arrow just in case and watch in the direction of the noise. He is ready to call out to those in the house if need be.
Jun 6, 2026 3:48 pm
As Dell scans to see the source of the sound, a humanoid shape steps into the starlight, across the yard from the house, 30' beyond the other side of the wagon, well to the west of the path leading back to Cecily's Road. It moves jerkily, unnaturally, like a marionette, and Dell immediately recognizes it for what it is: an animated corpse. If it is one of the bodies he and Antonius buried earlier, it is not obvious, as it is coming from a different direction. He would be more certain if he could get closer and see them more clearly: signs of fresh dirt, remains of rope fibers, recognizable features and wounds. As he is assessing this, another comes out of the tree line behind the first. Then he notices movement in his peripheral vision; looking that way, he sees swaying in the tall crops of the fields to the east: something is pushing its way through the plants that obscure his view of whatever it is.

All three are heading for the house. He can stay and watch for more, he could raise the alarm, and/or he could start attacking.
OOC:
@mathias0077 - Roll initiative. How soon the others roll initiative will depend on Dell's actions.

Round One
(this is followed by round two)

"To arms! To arms!!" Dell yells, "The dead are coming to the house!"

Everyone else in the party can roll initiative as more twitching corpses totter into view and approach the source of the noise, moving out of the trees and around the wagon. If there are others approaching him on the other side of the house, Dell's view is blocked by the house itself.

Kazzak moves to the kitchen door and flings it open; his darkvision enables him to see the decaying features of the two shambling corpses (Dave and Dean) that have just silently come around the southeastern corner of the house from the trees and are approaching the door. There is also movement in the crops to the east: perhaps another corpse approaches from that direction? It's hard to say what it is, as the dead make no sound of breath or voice. But Kazzak is focused on the enemy in front of him; he steps up and slashes it with his longsword.
Dave takes 7 slashing damage!

Dave tries to retaliate, windmilling its rotting arms to slap at Kazzak, but its clumsy, jerky attacks are easy to avoid!
Dean comes up alongside and tries to smash Kazzak, too, but it is also unable to connect!

The two that are coming up to the front of the house (Dina and Don) can somehow tell that living things are within: they have moved almost to the point where they can attack the house!

Hearing Dell's cry, Sora wakes, runs downstairs, and opens the door: there are two undead creatures there, Dina and Don! Sora slips past them before they can get close enough to impede her progress, and she stands protectively in front of the barn.
OOC:
@WhtKnt - you can choose to have Sora attack one of these, or move past them (no opportunity for them to attack) to the barn.

Amnestria, roused by the rogue's call, rises from her studies, pulls out a seal, and uses her magic to make it shine with magical Light. Opening the shutters, she tosses the shining coin out into the yard; it lands behind Don and Dina, silhouetting those undead nicely for anyone still in the house.

Antonius rushes to the kitchen door behind Kazzak with his shield and warhammer in hand. Hearing Dell's call that the dead are coming, he growls, "Of course they are. I bury six corpses and the forest sends me six more." He casts Light on his shield, then steps out into the dark behind the house with Kazzak, Dave, and Dean. "Come then," he says grimly to his ally, already fighting the monsters in the night. "Let us see what has disturbed the Lady’s rest."

Grateful for Amnestria's Light, Dell looses an arrow, hitting Don squarely in the torso.
Don takes 9 piercing damage!

Grallaria flies out of the now-open window and circles the farm, looking keenly at anything that moves. Through her mental link with Amnestria, she thinks ::Big People Moving on Either Side of Roost and Horse Place and Tall Plants. Lots of Mice in Plants::

Meanwhile, "Reynald, my shield and sword!" Berthold is addressing his attendants. "Guilbert, get the crossbow loaded! Olyena, check out the window and tell me what you see." Olyena opens the shutters to the darkness; the southern windows look out on the forest. Reynald offers, "Shall I help you don your armor, Sir?" but the knight dismisses the idea with a hand gesture and a curt, "No time." Instead he draws his sword, casts Light on it, and issues directions, "Barricade yourselves here. If you have a clear shot at one of the dead, take it, Reynald." Wordlessly, Guilbert hands the crossbow to the boy. "Otherwise, keep watch and cry out if you see anything dangerous out there." Berthold ends his turn in the center of the kitchen, equal distance from the front and kitchen doors.
19 - Kazzak (12/12)
18 - The dead Dave (-7), Dean, Dina, Don (-9)
16 - Sora (12/12)
7 - Amnestria (9/9)
7 - Antonius (10/10)
6 - Dell (9/9)
4 - Grallaria (1/1)
3 - Berthold (10/11)

Everyone, post your turns along with your initiative. @mathias0077 - since we already have his initiative, just post Dell's turn. The undead used their whole turns approaching.

Amnestria sought her own solace in the upstairs bedroom, the same room she used to repel the bandits. Seated in the middle of the floor with no lights, she wonders why her meditations include Dell's voice; surely she hasn't been thinking about the border warden that much.

It takes Grallaria's forceful trill to snap the wizard out of her trance. As soon as she sees that the elf is fully roused, the owl hops to the window sill, wanting to get out and have a better view from the tree branches above.

Amnestria nearly empties her pack in her effort to retrieve her wand.
