Chapter 4.2: The Dim Journey to Orlane

As you continue to question the two captives, the following becomes clear:

- the two survivors are so committed to a sociopathic concept of individual responsibility that they legitimately don't understand why you hold them accountable for their companions' actions. They can't feel remorse for something they didn't do.
- Black has organized several bands of independent operatives such as their group into a loose network of squads that are occasionally called upon to perform tasks that are generally beneficial to all of them.
- Black sometimes shows up himself to deliver such orders, or sometimes he sends a kobold courier. The PCs remember the Dungeon Busters' account of bandits working with kobolds in the attack on the mill. When he comes, Black is usually cloaked and/or disguised. When the PCs ask whether they can be sure that it's the same person each time, Fern and Ene seem genuinely surprised and a bit disturbed - the thought clearly hadn't occurred to them.
- They think that at least two of their number - Fern calls them 'Jet' and 'Som,' but from her description the PCs recognize them as Hider One and Hider Three - had come from Orlane before joining their band; they had been sharecroppers but they'd had to leave when trade dried up and there was no work.
- Black hasn't sent any instructions for a while, so they'd been trying to make do on their own as best they could. The last communication was to "Be ready; a big opportunity is coming." The PCs are suspicious about the timing, but when you discuss it later you realize that this message doesn't coincide with the attack on the mill back on Day 1: that was nearly a month ago, and this message, delivered by a kobold speaking terrible Imperial, was from about a week ago. The group has been wandering the Dim Forest, scrounging for food and avoiding undead at night, ever since.
- It seemed a godsend when they found this abandoned farm two days ago. But the farm is clearly meant to support a smaller number of people; their group ate through all the vegetables in a day. Abe was pretty mad at this; he'd been getting pretty demanding lately. But he explained that this had potential to be a good setup for them; with a little "forethought" and "planning," they might be able to live here for longer than a few days.
- Knowing they had some farm experience, Abe left Jet and Som behind with instructions to "figure out how to get the crops going again" along with Kiil and Punt (the party figures that these are Hider Two and Hider Four), while the rest of them went foraging yesterday evening. Kiil had said he saw a guy snooping around at the edge of the farm, so they were also supposed to look and see if they could find some rival gang trying to take the farm from them (obviously this was them mistaking Dell as a rival bandit).
- They didn't find anything last night - Fern doesn't say it herself, but Ene's attitude makes it seem like Fern and Abe had a tryst. Ene didn't want to hang around for that, went off on her own, and ended up running from undead most of the night.
- All the searchers returned this morning, meeting at the path, and then came back home to find the wagon with the dead people and the party's ambush. They didn't realize that the corpses were Jet and Kiil until after the party attacked. From their veiled references, it's clear that Fern and Ene are hoping to survive for long enough for Som and Punt to sneak into the farm tonight and rescue them; they don't realize that the party already killed them and stowed their corpses in the barn.

As far as Ene and Fern know, there is no connection between Black and the cult in Orlane, though the PCs can read between the lines to intuit that more of the bandits in the larger organization are probably also people who fled their homes in Orlane when things turned bad.

It is early afternoon on Day 28. The party is at the old Jarl farm (a day's travel in either direction to get to a settlement - Hochoch or Orlane) with two bandit captives.

What do you want to do now?

Antonius returns from the barn partway through the questioning, the smell of hay, smoke, and death still clinging faintly to his armor as he listens in silence while the others recount what they have learned. His expression darkens slightly at the mention of Black, kobold couriers, and the growing desperation spreading out from Orlane. "Then this is no isolated rabble," he says at last, folding his arms as he considers the implications. "Hungry people fleeing dying farms become easy tools for anyone offering purpose—or prey for darker things in these woods." His gaze drifts briefly toward the treeline beyond the farmhouse windows. "We already know the dead walk here at night. If Black’s people are wandering the forest avoiding them, there may be signs nearby: camps, graves, tracks, perhaps even evidence of whatever stirs the corpses."

He looks between the others, practical as ever. "We have two choices. We press on to Orlane immediately and deliver these prisoners into proper custody… or we make use of the daylight while we still have it." He gestures toward Fern and Ene. "Tie them securely in the cellar or barn while we search the surrounding forest. If there are other bandit cells nearby, or clues to the undead, we may find them before nightfall. Then we return here, hold the homestead through the night, and move on at dawn." His hand settles on the pommel of his warhammer as his voice lowers thoughtfully. "Black is preparing for something. I would rather not walk blind into it."

Dell will listen to Block and while bandit hunting sounds appealing they are supposed to be going to Orlane."I vote we head for Orlane. That is our mission for the DBs. Not to be wandering the woods looking for bandit sign. The bandits will always be here we have brothers in arms that might be in trouble and need our help." He thinks to himself hang in there Chase I will head off by myself if need be.
May 25, 2026 2:11 pm
"Not to be the voice of dissent, but Dell is right. We have a job to do, and that job isn't policing the forest. We were sent here to find out what is happening in Orlane and to put a stop to it if possible."
May 25, 2026 3:52 pm
"As I see things," the knight steps in, having heard the different opinions expressed, "we will not be able to reach Orlane before nightfall, and would probably have to camp in the Dim, or force a march through the night. We’d be more exposed camping in the wild, but closer to our destination. The two prisoners, we can hand in to the authorities in Orlane. I’ll need some time to recover," he added, looking down at the quarrel still squarely lodged in his gut. "I’d say we regroup for an hour or so, then get moving. That way we can get to Orlane early in the morning."
OOC:
Short rest, recovery some hp, pack our stuff and march another four hours before picking a spot to camp.

Amnestria doesn't relish the thought of escorting the two bandits through the forest. Leaving Grallaria to keep watch from the upstairs window, the wizard heads downstairs to join the others, going as far as the main doorway should most of the group be outside. "Why not just let them go?" she asks. "I doubt they're much of a threat anymore. Point them towards Hochoch so they can find work, and they already claim to be able to dodge the undead roaming the woods."
May 26, 2026 2:03 am
"I agree. Give them at least a chance to live. And if they return to banditry..." she lets the threat linger.
May 26, 2026 1:43 pm
Antonius listens to the discussion in silence, his expression unreadable as the others argue for mercy and haste. At last he exhales through his nose and gives a reluctant nod. "I do not like turning armed bandits loose into the wilds," he says bluntly, eyes settling on Fern and Ene. "Mercy is one thing. Naivety is another." Still, he does not press the matter further. "But Dell and Sora are right—we were sent to Orlane, not to linger here chasing shadows through the forest. Escorting prisoners through the Dim would slow us and weaken us besides." His attention shifts to Berthold and the quarrel lodged painfully in the knight’s gut. "Before we move, sit down and let me tend to that properly," Antonius says, already reaching for his kit. "You’ve lost enough blood for one day." He straightens after a moment, gaze sweeping over the exhausted group. "Shall we take a short rest here at the homestead, recover what strength we can, then head for Orlane before dusk deepens. If these two truly intend to leave this life behind, then the forest will test their resolve soon enough."
May 26, 2026 4:10 pm
Amnestria says quietly, trying not to let the two bandits overhear, "Well, I don't think they said they were going to reform. I simply don't want to manage them while we journey to Orlane. They evidently dislike us for killing their friends, so I'd rather not have to sleep with one eye open; we've already got undead and troglodytes to worry about."

She continues, "I also don't care if they live or die in this forest. If they choose to come back here after we're gone, we can take care of it on our way back to Hochoch. And since I'm pretty sure this is that other family's farm we were told about, either us or other Dungeon Busters will visit this homestead when it's time for them to reclaim their land."

"These bandits have no remorse yet don’t display other obviously evil traits. Their circumstances must have been extreme to produce such a hardened attitude. I am not sure if they are more dangerous to us as prisoners or loose in the woods."

"In either case, shouldn’t we stay here for the night and go to Orlane tomorrow, rather than risk an undead attack?"
May 26, 2026 7:49 pm
"I wouldn't mind staying overnight," says Amnestria. "We'd then arrive at Orlane tomorrow evening, yes? Enough time, perhaps, to find lodging at the inn like any traveling nobleman's group would."

OOC:
Just a note: you've taken all of their weapons, so even if you do turn the bandits loose, they wouldn't be armed.

It sounds like there are three proposals for travel:
a) take a short rest at the farm, then go all the way to Orlane to arrive late tonight
b) head east now, camp when it gets dark, then head into Orlane tomorrow morning
c) spend the night at the farm, then head east in the morning, arriving tomorrow evening

The question of whether to release the captives or bring them someplace seems somewhat independent of the travel plans; each proposal could involve escorting or releasing the surviving bandit women. The opportunity to search the area around the farm for other threats is really mostly only an option in the third proposal, unless some of the PCs who don't need to rest in the first proposal want to take that hour looking around while the remainder of the party does rest.

Did I capture the three proposals correctly? If so, I'll open a poll.

"I am all for resting here tonight and leaving at first light. Berthold and his retainer could use the rest. It sounds like we need to be at full strength or close to it when we get to Orlane. I hate to delay longer but a run in with the undead at night doesn't sound fun. As for the girls, I say we keep them tied up tonight and turn them loose in the morning when we leave." Dell will pause for a second and look at Fern. "Which way does Black or his kobold lackeys usually come from? If different every time which way did they come in last?"
OOC:
Those options sound right.

Amnestria scowls, "If we release them when we leave, they'll probably just stay here at the farm." She considers the idea again, and shrugs. "I suppose that still won't affect our journey. Should they survive and get picked up by another group of bandits, we can deal with them when the time comes."

Ene confirms that Black or his messengers come from different directions, and not in a consistent way based on relative positions in the forest as the bandits moved - it seems clear to you all that Black is careful to mask his movements so no one has a strong idea where he's coming from. Ene explains that, with the most recent communication, the kobold came from the north, and the party remembers what what they said earlier: that meeting wasn't here at the abandoned farm. Ene clarifies that the kobold met them when they were miles further east, and a bit north of Cecily's Road.

"I must uphold the law, and these trespassers and highwaymen have committed a number of crimes, by their own admission and by all the evidence they have left in this homestead. But I am not a reeve, a magistrate, or some other bearer of the sovereign's authority here. Killing in self-defence is acceptable. Killing in a duel, or a challenge, might even be glorious. Killing, or otherwise punishing captives of war without cause is cowardly and uncouth," the knight commented.

"Were they of noble birth, we could ransom them, or exchange against valuable hostages. What remains of them is, however, a pitiful lot. Perhaps they could be persuaded to head back and present themselves to Master Razorsson with a missive from us. He will know what to do with the two, if they reach Hochoch. And if they don't, we'll know, and could decide whether to seek them out or let them be. Had I a larger retinue, or a few men-at-arms and horses, I'd send them back under escort. But that is not currently within my reach."

At this point, the young knight visibly sighed, suggesting that his lack of a proper escort was a humiliation he often had cause to ponder about.

"I say we decide if we stay here for the evening, or not. Once we've decided I'll go and talk to the women, and give them a chance to head to Hochoch and perhaps even find gainful employment. We'll see how they react, and decide from there."

OOC:
I second the options.
Kazzak admires Sir Berthold's principles. "Aye. Sending them to Hochoch seems to be the best choice, although I do not trust they will try to redeem themselves. Perhaps we can bury a couple of small weapons that they can retrieve after we leave this house? An act of mercy may guide them toward a better path in life."

Dell nods "Master Razzorson would surely find something for them. They should also let the Jarl's know what has happened in just the short time they have been gone. Maybe some Busters could come back and act as bandits and get a location on Black." That is right up Dell's alley. He is the infiltrator the shadows had ever seen but he must find Chase.
