Dell will move to open the barn doors so oxen and wagon can be stowed away there."I suggest we stay for a day. If they don't show up by then that we move on. By the looks of things I don't think they range to far from here."Dell will take up a hidden position with bow ready to cover their most common path in and out.
OOC:
He will be elevated so either in the loft or on the roof of the house. Which ever makes more sense by the way the bandits travel.
Apr 21, 2026 11:20 am
Antonius takes a slow look over the homestead, then begins issuing instructions with the steady cadence of a man used to command. "Here is how I suggest we do this. Olyena we place in the house, laid out with what dignity we can manage for now. Once sheltered, we’ll use the wagon to move the four bodies into one of the pens. Bind them as well—I trust my rites, but I trust rope more." He gestures toward the yard. "Then we dress two of these dead curs in plain clothes and set them slumped on the wagon outside, as if they’ve taken it and grown careless in their spoils. A few skins scattered, the look of drink and indiscipline—let their fellows believe they’ve found easy company."

He turns slightly, "Kazzak’s plan holds good. We rest and stand watch for their return, ready to close the trap. Dell, you take a concealed position covering the most likely approach—bow ready—and I would have you scout briefly first to confirm the direction they favour to return, no further than is safe. We set watches and hold for a day; if they do not return, we move on."

His expression hardens slightly at his final addition. "And one more thing—if we must, we draw them in fast. A shout, a scream from within the house, something to sell the lie that the wagon’s capture has turned to cruel sport. When they come through that door, they come into our hands."
Apr 21, 2026 5:01 pm
Amnestria is demonstrably leery of touching the dead bodies, much less after seeing what her own magical flame has done to contribute to their demise. She tries to find other tasks more suited to her delicate sensibilities, going so far as to even try to help manage the oxen.

As the plan to ambush the bandits is made, Amnestria asks, "Do we really need to bring them inside the house? Isn't it better to defend from a distance like we did on the road?"

She is otherwise ready to take position by one of the upper floor windows and launch fire bolts from there. To assist in her own concealment, Amnestria enlists Grallaria's help in designing a Minor Illusion to make it appear as though there is nobody in the window; once it's known that the bandits are nearby, the glamour will be put in place.

OOC:
@spaceseeker19 Wouldn't my earlier investigation of the farm told me their travel routes? Do you need another roll?
Apr 21, 2026 11:13 pm
Berthold observed the farmstead with a grim expression. He did not like what he saw. He heard his companion’s plans in silence, pondering the strategies proposed without assenting or dissenting. He took some time to observe the farmhouse itself, as if he were looking for something specific, but whatever it was, the knight wasn’t saying.

Reacting to Amnestria, the young man commented at last. "It is a sound plan, overall, as far as plans go. Indeed, fighting within the farmhouse could be dangerous, but so could attacking them from within. Marauders are known for setting fires to such places on a whim… our best hope is surprise."
OOC:
Berthold is looking for any stores of rations, victuals, water, weapons or ammunition. He is trying to determine if those who were here earlier went away for a few hours, in which case they wouldn’t take any materials or provisions that could be left in reserve, or if they’ve left carrying most of what they had…
Apr 22, 2026 3:05 am
Kazzak is no stranger to dead bodies, having caused his share in the past. As he positions the two least damaged ones near the wagon, the warrior says to the others, "I think the fighting will start outside here. They’ll probably check on their companions before entering the house. If they do, they’ll be on their guard."
OOC:
Kazzak will stay within the house on the ground level. When/if the bandits arrive, he will hide by a window with his crossbow until it’s time to shoot. If there’s no window, he’ll station by the side of the door so that he can attack with his sword when they enter.

Antonius sets to work without hesitation, directing the grim labor with quiet efficiency. He first helps Olyena into the farmhouse, supporting her carefully and easing her down to rest, making sure her wounds are bound and that she has water within reach. "Stay quiet, conserve your strength," he murmurs before returning outside. There, his demeanor shifts to cold practicality as he oversees the arrangement of the dead. The bandits are hauled to the wagon, stripped of their armor and weapons, then bound at the wrists and ankles with rough cord, posed to suggest they have been overpowered and brutalised. He positions them deliberately—slumped, twisted, and faced downward or turned away—so that no features are easily recognized at a glance. One is lashed against the wagon’s side, head hanging low; another is sprawled across the boards, limbs tied tight as if left after interrogation. Antonius scatters a few skins, loose coins, and signs of disorder around them, building the image of cruelty and carelessness. He steps back, studies the scene, and makes a final adjustment to obscure a face further. Satisfied, he withdraws to his place in the ambush, expression set and patient, ready for the moment when the lie draws their prey in close enough for judgment

Berthold oversaw Reynald and Guilbert’s work assisting Antonius’ and the others in moving and setting up the bodies. It all appeared rather macabre, but the knight assumed the priest of death knew what he was doing. He made sure Olyena was installed in what comfort and dignity that could be arranged in this impromptu bandit base. Although she might have insisted on making herself useful, he made sure that she rested and did nothing to prepare the farmhouse for the eventual confrontation. He wondered what to make of his earlier examination of the interior of the house, and his search for evidence of the and it main group’s intention.
OOC:
Once @spaceseeker19 tells what Berthold can discern, I’ll see if the knight has any further actions in mind. In any case, he’ll be looking for any armaments, armour or shields, evidence of food stocks, or of any remaining baggage in the farmhouse or around it. If he finds nothing, he will also prepare and position Reynald, Guilbert and Olyena for the probable confrontation.

rpgventurer says:
Kazzak checks the well and the quality of its water.
Kazzak draws up the rope and the bucket attached to it. The water is clear and the sip is cool and sweet with no ill effects. This supports all the evidence they've observed already, that the bandits are squatting at the abandoned farm (and so they wouldn't poison their own water supply).
Quote:
How far is the barn from the farmhouse and where are the farmhouse windows?
The path back to Cecily's Road is to the south. It opens up on a wide yard, perhaps 40 paces across. The house is on the east side of the yard, with the front door and windows facing west. The well is a few paces east behind the house, adjacent to the garden on the other side (further east). The house is about 25 paces from the barn, which is on the north side of the yard with its doors facing south and north. The midden is east of the barn and north of the garden. The fields spread to the east and to the north beyond the house and barn. All are enclosed by the thick trees of the Dim Forest.

The house has four windows on the ground floor: one on either side of the front door, letting light through the west wall into the main room. Another window is opposite, letting light in from the east to the left of the fireplace. The fourth window is in the southern wall, letting light into the ground-floor bedroom. The other exterior door is the back door, to the right of the fireplace and which leads out of the main room to the east. Stairs start just outside the bedroom door and lead to the second story landing. It's very dim at the top of the stairs because there are no windows, just three doors (one each in the north, east, and south walls). These doors lead to three very similar bedrooms. The one to the north has a window in the north wall (overlooking the barn) and another in the west wall (overlooking the yard). The south bedroom has two windows facing the woods to the south. The east bedroom has a window facing east (overlooking the fields) and another facing north (overlooking the garden and barn).
mathias0077 says:
Dell will move to open the barn doors so oxen and wagon can be stowed away there.
Dell opens the barn doors wide and finds a comfortable, concealed spot in the loft. While the bandits could return from any direction, all signs indicate that all recent traffic used the path (except for the people bringing back something bloody from the fields - Dell assumes this was the pig they caught and slaughtered), so he faces south.
Mathfuric says:
"Here is how I suggest we do this...we’ll use the wagon to move the four bodies into one of the pens...Then we dress two of these dead curs in plain clothes and set them slumped on the wagon outside, as if they’ve taken it and grown careless in their spoils. A few skins scattered, the look of drink and indiscipline—let their fellows believe they’ve found easy company."
OOC:
@Mathfuric - Clarify this for me: are all four bodies in one of the pens in the barn, or are they split up, with some in the barn and others arrayed on the wagon? Also, is the intent to have the bodies look like they are the bandits' companions ("company"), or are they supposed to look like captives the bandits have tortured? Finally, where is Antonius planning to be?
CancerMan says:
Amnestria...is otherwise ready to take position by one of the upper floor windows and launch fire bolts from there. To assist in her own concealment, Amnestria enlists Grallaria's help in designing a Minor Illusion to make it appear as though there is nobody in the window; once it's known that the bandits are nearby, the glamour will be put in place.
Acting as lookout and ready to hurl more deadly fire from behind an illusion, Amnestria takes position in the west-facing window in the north bedroom on the second floor.
matmaisan says:

He took some time to observe the farmhouse itself, as if he were looking for something specific, but whatever it was, the knight wasn’t saying.
Without committing himself to any preparations for the ambush yet, the noble knight looks for signs that the bandits are returning...beyond the fact that they left some of their number here at the farm. He doesn't find any spare food, as the bandits slaughtered one of the Jarl family's livestock. It may be that they are planning to come back with food for the ones they left here. But hidden in a cupboard, Berthold does find a sack with a bunch of stuff in it: silver combs, rings, cameos, an oak cane, some lace veils, a small roll of velvet cloth, an embroidered surplice, and twelve pouches - the type a person might wear on their belt when traveling. Going through the pouches, Berthold finds they contain an assortment of coins. None of this tells him when the bandits are likely to return, only that they are certain to return sometime.

As he is weighing the pouches in his hand, Berthold hears the wagon arrive. He steps outside and helps Antonius lift unsteady Olyena down and help her into the house. Laying her down on the bed in the first-floor bedroom, Berthold pulls a blanket over her and encourages her to stay in bed for peaceful, recuperative rest. "Stay quiet, conserve your strength," Antonius directs her, before going out to the well to draw some water to give her in a cup that he finds in the kitchen.
rpgventurer says:
Kazzak will stay within the house on the ground level. When/if the bandits arrive, he will hide by a window with his crossbow until it’s time to shoot.
After Antonius delivers the mug of water to Olyena's bedside, he leaves the knight alone with his servant and returns outside. As the death cleric directs and assists Reynald and Guilbert in the disposition of the dead bandits, Kazzak stations himself with loaded crossbow between the front door and a window.
Mathfuric says:
Antonius...withdraws to his place in the ambush.
OOC:
@Mathfuric - Where is that place? If you've said, I missed it. Also, how much money is Antonius scattering on the ground?
matmaisan says:

It all appeared rather macabre, but the knight assumed the priest of death knew what he was doing. He made sure ... of his earlier examination of the interior of the house, and his search for evidence of the and it main group’s intention.
After watching Antonius direct his servants in setting up the scene with all the precision of the more elaborate stage plays he's seen at the Dunsdale court, Berthold goes back to searching for further evidence of the bandits' activities. He finds no weapons other than the ones on the bandits the party killed, which are currently hidden in the wagon. He figures this means that the bandits are in the habit of carrying their fighting equipment - armor and weapons - on themselves, rather than leaving a store behind. But, as he observed earlier, at least some of their loot was left here with the three men and one woman (the four whom the party killed), so they are likely to return, and, if nothing out of the ordinary tips them off, they are likely to do it without suspecting anything has changed for the worse.
OOC:
@matmaisan - How does Berthold prepare for this ambush? What position does he take, and what position does he instruct Reynald and Guilbert to take?

OOC:
I think if there is time Antonius will return to the main house and set the fire, if none other have. He will then wait inside in consultation with his Lady.

Yeah sorry with the description got a little mixed around.
- Two bodies in the pen
- Two bodies setup to look like bandits victims, as though they played with them for a while before killing them and continuing with their celebrations.
- He will throw may 4 or 5 coins on the ground, if Berthold shows them the loot found he may throw a couple of those items on the ground as well for effect.
Apr 23, 2026 6:45 am
OOC:
@Mathfuric Do you think the bandits will recognize the "victims" to be their former companions? Even the ones that were burnt are wearing the same clothing the other bandits saw when they left.

Once the majority of the preparations in the farmhouse and the adjoining barn were finished, Berthold walked up the stairs carrying his heavy crossbow in his arms, bringing Guilbert and Reynald along with him. He examined the three upstairs rooms calmly while his men stood in the small corridor. The three men then headed into tho room where Olyena had been allowed to rest.

He turned to his young squire and handed the heavy weapon. "I believe you have already used this, Reynald? It is an ordinary soldier's weapon, not an instrument of glorious knighthood," he began, observing how the young man received the weapon and handled it. "You and Guilbert will stand guard tonight, using the windows in these three rooms to keep an eye on the road to the farm, and the adjoining fields. You should take turns sleeping, and moving from one room to the other to chase the sleep away, and look around. Should you see anything strange, you wake the other," he continued, eyeing the two men one after the other, appraisingly. "If either of you see anything troubling — movement, strange noises, the total lack of noise —" he turned to Guilbert, "You come down the stairs, wake me up, and tell me whatever it is you've seen." His gaze turned towards Reynald, "and you close the door, load that weapon, set yourself here", pointing to a spot across the room from the door, and with a clear view of the doorway. "If there's fighting inside the house, they shouldn't come through us. But if they do, you keep your sights on that door, and shoot anyone who isn't one of us, or of our merry band. Hopefully your aim will be true, and whatever tries to get through is stopped. If not, you'll protect Olyena."

Seeing the lad's eyes go wide not in terror of a fight, but in rejection of being assigned such a menial task as protecting a wounded, low-born servant, Berthold's hand rose up as to compel silence. "A knight defends those who cannot defend themselves and, in our current predicament, Olyena is the most defenceless of our band. It would ba a failure of character to seek glory in the mêlée below when your duty compels you to be the stalwart defender of the meek."

Hoping that would quiet the over-eager youth's desire to prove himself, he stepped back slightly and encompassed both men in his view. "Our trap depends on them coming to us. You must not alert the highwaymen to your presence, and must in no circumstance shoot first. I trust you understand your tasks?"

After any questions or protests, to which Berthold gave little consideration, and after wishing Olyena a good night's rest, the knight stepped backed downstairs, set his helm on the table, and sat in a position turned towards the door. He looked at the others and smiled softly, glad for the heat from the fireplace, and the company of other able warriors in the darkness that engulfed the farmhouse.
OOC:
Not sure which room Olyena was placed in, but the idea is that Guilbert and Reynald keep a perimeter watch during the night, without attracting any attention to themselves. If fighting breaks out around, or within the Jarl's home, he'll engage in close quarters fighting. Reynald might get a single shot at any intruders that manage to go upstairs, though Berthold expect none of the bandits to even cross the threshold into the house. After talking to his companions, Berthold will try to sleep propped up agains the wall, with shield and long sword nearby.

OOC:
Olyena was laid out in the ground floor bedroom, not upstairs. For the sake of brevity, I'll say that Berthold decided she'd be more safe upstairs and had Guilbert carry her up (so that your plan can be enacted, rather than requiring a new one).

OOC:
Though the forest gloom is Dim, the darkness of the homestead in the clearing is only figuratively dark, since it is still morning (all of this searching/moving the wagon/setting the stage has taken an hour at most). Two or three hours remain before noon.

Antonius finishes directing the setting of his grisly tableau, then when he starts scattering coins, Sora emerges from the forest to see what in the world he's doing. As the death cleric explains his plan again, Berthold calls Reynald and Guilbert away to help secure Olyena's safety. Though she is comfortably resting in the ground-floor bedroom, Berthold doesn't want to worry about the safety of his retainers while he's fighting, if it comes to combat. So he has Guilbert gather up the body servant (an easy task, since she's as small as a toddler in his arms) and carry her upstairs. There, the knight charges them to be vigilant and to defend Olyena from anyone trying to gain entry to "her" bedroom (the south one). As Berthold entrusted his heavy crossbow to Reynald, Antonius finished setting the stage for his show and came inside the farmhouse. He closed the door behind him, nodded to Kazzak, and then went into the kitchen to light the fire, making it seem as if the bandits were still inside, cooking. Sitting at the dining table with a clear view of the door, Antonius assumed the proper prayer posture and began to commune with his Lady. Soon enough, Berthold clomped back down the stairs, dropped his helmet on the table and sat down opposite Antonius with a grim smile and a nod. Sora joined Dell in the barn, but instead of climbing up into the loft, she is waiting in the shadows just inside the barn doors on the ground floor below the rogue.
OOC:
Here's what I have:
Amnestria is in the "north" bedroom of the farmhouse, looking out a west window, ready to cast an illusion and start flinging fire.
Antonius is in the farmhouse kitchen, watching the front door.
Berthold is in the farmhouse kitchen, watching the back door.
Dell is in the barn loft, watching the trailhead that leads back into the Dim toward Cecily's Road.
Kazzak is in the farmhouse kitchen, standing by the front door/window, ready to use missile or melee weapons as the situation develops.
Sora is in the barn.
Reynald and Guilbert are stationed at second-floor windows in the south and east bedrooms (since Amnestria is already looking west).
Olyena continues to rest in the southern bedroom's bed.

sounds correct to me 👍🏻

Berthold observed Antonius’ prayers in silent respect.

Apr 26, 2026 11:34 pm
Hours pass. It is early afternoon when Sora and Dell hear the voices of people approaching up the forest path.

Dell is in the loft of the barn with the doors open; he has the least muffling of approaching sounds.
OOC:
@mathias0077 - roll a WIS (Insight) check, please.

For those of you in the house - Amnestria, Antonius, Berthold, Kazzak - roll a WIS (Perception) check to see how quickly you hear the noise and how much you can make out of the conversation.

Sora quickly finds cover.
