Chapter 4.2: The Dim Journey to Orlane

As the last of the fighting died with the screaming bandit collapsing into the underbrush, Antonius gave only a brief glance toward the fallen before turning his full attention back to the wagon. He checked Olyena once more, fingers pressing lightly at her throat and along the wound, noting the steadiness of her breath. "She is stable," he said to Berthold as the knight approached, his tone clinical. "The bleeding has been arrested and the wound sealed for now, but there is significant trauma—she will need proper rest, cleaning of the wound, and monitoring for fever or corruption." Rising, Antonius signaled for the wagon to halt before stepping down, casting a measured look over the group. "Well fought," he added evenly, though there was a note of approval beneath the calm. "You held formation, adapted quickly—no wasted motion." His gaze shifted toward the bodies in the trees. "Before we move on, we search them. Weapons, markings, anything that ties them to this… disturbance." He rested a hand on his warhammer. "Then we proceed to the homestead—with eyes open."

"My thoughts exactly," the knight responded approvingly at Antonius' proposed course of action. But his eyes never really quit his servant, Olyena, and his blood specked face showed signs of preoccupation. He stepped onto the carriage in his heavy armour, wooden structure groaning under his weight. He came next to the fallen gnome and observed her unconscious face.
"Thank you for saving her, Master Block. She seemed close to departing this mortal coil," he then looked up at the fearful, strained expressions of Guilbert and Reynald. Labour would hammer out their strain and focus their minds. "Well done, Reynald. How does it feel to taste true combat? You and Guilbert can follow me. We'll bring the bodies here, so we can examine them. There's perhaps useful things these highwaymen had. And after that, I want you to have a look at the ox, Guilbert. It was feathered during the fight. It might need treatment."
Having sheathed his sword and recovered his shield, the knight looked down with concern at Olyena one last time, before heading out with his man-servants to fetch the bodies and any fallen gear.

OOC:
Berthold is doing this more to sooth the servant's nerves than because he wants to dirty his hands with dead bodies. He obviously feels some remorse for exposing Olyena to such mortal danger, and will probably lay on hands her once the bodies have been collected and examined. He does not want to wake her up and have her trying to assist when she is obviously very hurt.Last edited April 16, 2026 10:30 am

Dell goes about retrieving any arrows he can and will help search bodies. He will pay close attention for any spiral tats or brandings. He will take any extra arrows these bandits had.

Still reeling with adrenaline, Amnestria fidgets in the wagon, clearly unsure of what she should be doing. She settles on arranging the luggage to help stabilize Olyena so the gnome's unconscious body doesn't roll around, and it helps take her mind off the stickiness of her own drying blood clinging to her back.

Guilbert draws the oxen to a stop and climbs down with Reynald; together they find and fetch the bodies of the bandits.
Dell is able to retrieve the one arrow that lodged in a tree toward the end of the fight; the others are lost in the dark forest or lodged too deeply in flesh and bone to extract intact.
Two of the bodies are badly burnt. The other two have sweat-reeking leather armor that could be patched and repaired by a tanner. None of them have been mutilated with tattoos or scars, nor do they bear any jewelry. Between the four of them, they did have an assortment of money: 93 cubs and 6 seals. Each had a slightly curved short sword with a single edge (scimitars), each of which has clearly seen a lot of use in fights and also for cutting brush. They each had light crossbows, but one of them was broken when the dead bandit fell on it. So there are three light crossbows, and a collection of quarrels (bolts) for the crossbows. Crossbows bolts are too small to use with a bow, and they hit with such force that they are destroyed on impact with anything harder than a bale of hay. So none of the bolts they used are retrievable except for the one that Antonius extracted from Amnestria's back. In addition to that one, there are 34 bolts that had not been used. Their boots are terrible, even more worn than those of Berthold's servants. Clearly none of them is a cobbler, nor have they bought new equipment for a long time. The wizard notes that they have no reading material, nor do they have packs or other gear, which suggests that a camp or hideout must be nearby.

Kazzak makes sure Admiral the canary is unharmed -- although the bird's been through worse than some jostling -- and helps with the corpse retrieval. He takes one of the bolts as a replacement for his missed shot then addresses his companions. "I've been thinking of a few things. First off, I propose that Berthold hold all coins we find on the way, and he uses them to pay for our food and lodging if we stay in Orlane. That would help with our story that we are mercenaries in his employment. We can split whatever is left when we return to Hochoch. Second off, there are tales of undead in this forest. Are are there rites we need to perform to make sure they stay plain dead? Third, I think we should send a group to check the farmhouse. That is a logical place for a hideout and there may be more bandits there. I volunteer to prepare and bury the bodies, although I would leave them for the vultures in other circumstances."

Dell nods"Sound like a good plan with the coinage. We don't need any on the road anyway. Maybe we should burn the bodies?" He will then shrug"I can go on the scouting party for the homestead if we want to check that out. It might be better if I went alone. I don't know if anyone is stealthy enough for the mission." Dell has been on his own for a lot of missions for the shadows so it would be nothing new for him.

"That homestead will be a good place to rest," says Amnestria, looking over Olyena's body. "Take my owl with you, Dell. She may not be able to stay in communication with me, but she is a second set of eyes and if you run into trouble, she can return quickly to alert us. She's a smart owl; if you ask her to do something, she will understand you."
Apr 16, 2026 11:43 pm
Dell will nod "Thank you my lady. Support is welcome, if anyone else were to come I would ask them to stay back a little and wait for my signal. Two short whistles will do. Sora would you like to assist?"
Apr 17, 2026 12:02 am
Antonius listens in silence as the others speak, then steps forward, his voice low but firm. "Caution first," he says, glancing toward the distant homestead. "A place that looks like shelter can just as easily be a den of wolves. Dell, I do not doubt your skill—but you should not go alone. Take the owl, as offered, and another companion who can hang back out of sight. Two whistles may not carry far enough if things turn poorly." He pauses, then gestures back toward the bodies. "As for these men… I will see to my lady’s work. They will not rise again if I can help it." His gaze drifts to the scattered weapons, expression hardening. "And their arms—take what we can carry, break what we cannot. Let no other hand make use of blades that have already tasted innocent blood."
Apr 17, 2026 4:54 am
It is less than half an hour since the party left their campsite. Sora follows Dell as he leads the way back to the trail leading north to the homestead, Grallaria the owl riding on his shoulder.
Making a pile of the weapons next to the bodies, the others consider how to dispose of the bodies and how to break swords. "We do have the wagon," Reynald points out after making a few failed attempts to bend and snap a blade. "We don't have to leave any of this stuff."

"Indeed, we could take the blades and the crossbows. As to the corpses, that would be Master Block’s decision to make," he responded. After the chaos of battle had receded and the busy work of securing the bodies had been taken care of, Berthold once more approached his fallen servant.
"It is time to wake, Olyena," he whispered softly, with obvious tenderness in his voice. He moved his hand towards his servant’s wound, his hand giving a faint glow. As it touched the gnome’s body ever so gently, a spasm went through Olyena, as she awoke from her slumber, obviously in pain. "You are safe, Olyena, our attackers have been dealt with. You are still grievously wounded, son want you to stay on this wagon, with Guilbert, until I can call upon holy blessing to mend your wounds, understood? This should not have happened, I am sorry you were hurt."
He will lay on hand to 1hp, so Olyena is conscious moving forward. He will now order Reynal to protect Guilbert and Olyena, and to safeguard the wagon. He will follow with the main group on foot as they complete their approach of the farmstead.

Dell will move off with Sora and Grallaria. Dell will ask Grallarai to fly ahead and give a double hoot if anything is seen. He hopes the owl understands that. As they get closer Dell will Sora about 25yds from the homestead and continue on his own. On their way there they went over the signal for help. It was something he and Chase came up with as they were growing up. A simple double whistle the kinda resembles a bird call but has its own sound. He had Sora practice on the way. Dell will move to the barn first to see if there are any horses or mules there as the first judge of there being anyone there.

Antonius moves with quiet purpose, first assisting in bundling the salvaged scimitars and serviceable crossbows, lashing them securely to the wagon so none are left for chance hands to claim. Only when the work is done does he return to the fallen, drawing a measured circle in the earth with the head of his Warhammer and placing each body within it, straightened and faced toward the same solemn direction. From a small pouch he produces bone-white dust and a shard of polished obsidian, symbols of Wee Jas’s dominion over death and law, sprinkling the dust across their brows before pressing the shard briefly to each sternum. His voice carries in a low, deliberate cadence as he intones the rites— "By the Ruby Lady’s will, your debt is ended; your flesh to stillness, your spirit to judgment" —before continuing in quieter, binding phrases, calling on his Lady to claim what is hers and forbid any restless return. When the last words fade, he slams the head of his Warhammer into the soil, sealing the ritual, and only then does he rise, satisfied the dead will remain so. Without further ceremony, he rejoins the others, following after Dell and Sora at a controlled distance, keeping the group held back from the homestead until a signal calls them forward.

As Antonius is busy starting the Jasidin rites (it's complicated by the fact that he has to clear a space in the forest large enough to draw the circle), the two Dungeon Busters finish covering the 120 paces to the edge of the farm. Grallaria flaps off of Dell's shoulder and flies silently around the Jarl farm. She sees no other people (and disappointingly no rodents, either). Sora stops at the edge of the farm, still within the shadow of the trees, listening intently. She hears nothing and sees no movement. Dell sneaks ahead into the farm like a ghost. There is a barn - the doors are open - a farmhouse with closed door, a garden on the other side, and fields beyond that. A great fire pit stands in between the barn and the house, with the blackened remains of a pig on a spit, mostly bones.
Having finished giving orders to his servants, Berthold marches after the two heroes who are exploring the farm. It takes a bit of searching, but soon enough he finds the path and clatters along toward the farm, his heavy armor jingling with every step. Sora and Dell can hear the unmistakable sound of the Baronet's approach; they know Berthold is coming, and that they've got perhaps a minute before he catches up to them.
