Chapter 4.2: The Dim Journey to Orlane

Mar 27, 2026 11:06 pm
The sun is nearly at its zenith when the party rides Rufus' wagon into the forest. At first the trees are sparse, with lots of bushes and shrubs in between, and the the sun is warm on your faces and arms with only intermittent shade. But before the hour is out, the trees have closed in on either side of the road and the sunlight is reduced to a greenish glow through the thick canopy that has formed above the Road. The world of brightness and light is behind you; a cool, dark tunnel stretches ahead into the distance.

The Dim Forest is aptly named.

Though the party has heard about the Jarl family, you have no idea where the crofters' homestead is, other than "nearly a day within the Dim." There is no one else on the Road now, and the undergrowth has crept its way in on either side, so that the Road is definitely narrower than it once was. Deep ruts show where past carts trundled on through winter rains; hardy plants have sprouted in the deeper tracks, and leaves have drifted onto the road in such numbers that you can hardly tell that a Road was even here. Other signs of life abound: creatures scurry and scamper through the bracken on either side, making an ongoing rhythm of small rustling, crashing noises. Leaves and small twigs fall from birds and squirrels moving through the treetops. It is as if the Road had been forgotten, people have vanished, and Nature has come to reclaim its land.

Forgotten? No. Thinking of the mystery of the cult and how traffic to and from the farming community of Orlane has dwindled to almost nothing, you realize that "abandoned" is the better word. People have vanished, and many of them involuntarily.

Eager to make progress, for the first few hours the heroes do not stop except for short breaks to relieve themselves or to rest the oxen. Not long after they enter the forest, they dine on the wagon, taking turns driving the oxen while others eat. Time rolls by as they continue through the deep shade of the trees.
OOC:
Is there anything in particular that you'd like to do or look for in the Forest before it's time to make camp for the night?

OOC:
Dell suggested looking for Chase's campgrounds. If any of you want your PCs to rove ahead to find one of the previous campsites (there are a few) during this first day's travel, roll a WIS (Survival) check.

Dell is not the woodsman that Chase is but he feels like he might be able to find previous camp sights but he know Chase would find well sheltered or masked areas for protection. Luckily he knows at least what to look for.

"I’ll stay and guard the wagon." Kazzak doesn’t want to wander into unfamiliar territory.

Everyone else is content to let Dell go off by himself as the only one looking for a campsite; they've only known him briefly, but they already explicitly trust him. Surely he'll be fine on his own.

Dell finds the path that leads off to a little homestead with a large house and generous barn. He doesn't get too close, out of respect for not disturbing the occupants. Coming back, he also finds a campsite that his brother had used, a bit closer to Hochoch and into the trees to the south.

Dell will head back and get the others "I found one of Chase's previous camp sights. It is this way."

Amnestria is relieved that existing campsites are available. She is starting to get used to travel, but there is so much to do and manage it's a wonder anybody stays awake for night watch.

Speaking of which... "We will help with the first watch," she says, hoping to get the laborious work out of the way so she can spend the rest of the time in meditation and relaxation. She includes her owl familiar in the task, hoping the near-silent patrol around the area will prove effective.

As the shadows of the trees surround them, Amnestria uses her Mage Hand to pluck a small stone from the ground. She casts Light upon the stone and puts it into her lamp, replenishing the spell as the hours pass.

"Dell, is the campsite suitable for a group our size, a wain, and oxen?"
Mar 31, 2026 7:40 am
Antonius watched Dell slip into the trees with a faint tightening of his jaw, clearly intending to speak before the moment passed him by. The words never came. He exhaled slowly, eyes lingering on the forest edge of the Dim Forest, as if measuring the distance between prudence and risk.

When Dell returned, Antonius addressed him calmly but firmly. "Warden Bandstone—if you intend to scout, say so before you vanish. These woods do not forgive solitary habits." There was no edge of anger, only quiet authority. As the group turned to discuss watch rotations, Antonius gave a small, dismissive motion of his hand. "Assign me where needed. I do not stand on comfort where duty is concerned." His gaze drifted once more to the darkening treeline. "Especially not here."
OOC:
Sorry for the slow reply, busy couple of days with work, otherwise Antonius would have gone with Dell.

Dell Nods to Antonius "Sorry, just use to working alone and I usually can move quicker and quieter on my own. I don't think we have to worry about the undead until it is dark but I will take someone next time." Looking at Kazzak "It will be tight but it will work. We can make a lean-to from the side of the wagon."

Berthold nodded silently at Antonius' remarks. The man's common sense and drive were remarkable qualities, as was his natural authority. It seemed almost out of place in a man of ordinary birth. Then again, Berthold knew that the highborn were not always bestowed the qualities required by their station. In any case, the Niole Dra guard must be a haven of excellent individuals, the young man thought. All of it certainly improved by the discipline required to become a follower of Wee Jas. A bit austere, as were some of his preceptors in the faith of Heironeous. It must be something about constantly trafficking with the divine. He knew not much of the many faiths of the people's of the flanaess, and in particular the Suel pantheon, but he'd heard enough to know that Wee Jas and Heironeous had in common their commitment to order; that must suffice.

"We can also take part in the vigil, as required," the young man commented as the talk of taking turns guarding begun.
OOC:
The "We" here is doing most of the work. If Berthold's retinue has come with him, he'll propose that Guilbert, his page, or Reynald, his 'squire' take part in guard duty. He will have Olyenna the gnomish servant hel prepare a proper meal in camp. He will assist in all those tasks, as needed. As soon as we are all settled and fed, he'll probably set out his chess board, and propose to game with anyone interested. If no one volunteers, he'll play against one of his retinue, who have litte say in the matter and endure his insistence in the act of gaming at every opportunity with polite indifference.

Antonius returned Berthold’s nod with quiet respect before lifting his amulet of Wee Jas from beneath his cloak. The small medallion—worked in the shape of a stylized skull set with a deep crimson gem in its brow—caught the last of the fading light as he murmured a measured incantation. A soft radiance bloomed from the ruby, spilling outward in a steady, unwavering glow that cast sharp, clean shadows rather than flickering warmth. With the darkness of the Dim Forest held at bay, Antonius examines the road toward the hidden campsite, his eyes briefly tracing the subtle signs along the ground. "Your tracking is precise," he said evenly to Dell. "If Chase surpasses you, then he is a man worth finding." He then glanced toward Amnestria Elyphara, the red-tinged light reflecting faintly in his gaze. "And your control is equally commendable, Mistress Elyphara. Tell me—what college refined such discipline in your craft?"

"I'll take a midshift. Let our casters get their beauty rest."

The campsite that Dell has found is nestled in among a stand of oaks south of the Road (*). Dell can tell by the ashes of the fire that only a couple of days have passed since it was last used; everyone takes that as an encouraging sign: this may be the place that the Dungeon Busters who came before them used.

Dell is able to confirm this within a few minutes, while Guilbert is helping settle the oxen and the adventurers are unloading their gear from the wagon: apparently from long years' habit, Chase had carved a Boundary Warden blaze on the trunks of two of the oaks. Reynald gathers wood for a fire as Olyena begins preparing Berthold's customary evening meal. She looks uncertainly at the motley crew gathering round her master, and whispers to the baronet: "While we are traveling with them, should I be preparing food for your companions too, my lord?"

* - For your edification, note that this is the campsite that the previous party set on Day 25.

As she tries to do her part in setting up the camp (under the direction of Dell), Amnestria considers Antonius's question. "No college, at least in terms of any large school" she answers. "My mother taught me the basics, and I studied under a couple of tutors, but I think the best courses lie in the field. Practical applications and earned experiences."
Apr 1, 2026 10:00 am
Looking to Antonius "I cannot hold a candle to my brother when it comes to tracking. He is the best of the best." Dell takes a moment as he sees the blaze of the Wardens. "I hope all is well with you brother." While setting up camp Dell says "I will also take a mid shift at watch."

The evening passes pleasantly enough and soon it is full dark. As everyone shares their observations of the trip so far and discusses preparations for their arrival at Orlane, each of you can roll a WIS (insight) check.

To while away the time, Amnestria takes up Berthold's offer of dragonchess, though she has never played and must be taught.
