The party continues their delve of the abandoned temple. The adventurers carrying their wound ed and incapacitated comrade. Will they find what they came for?

Berith makes her way slowly and carefully up the stairs. Her careful examinations don’t seem to identify anything particularly untoward and nothing ill befalls her.

As she makes her way up, she stops part way to motion Elspaeth forwards with the lamp as the light is blocked by the ceiling of the hall leading to the stairs.

With Elspaeth standing near the base the stairs Berith can see the full length of the stairs and makes it high enough up the stairwell to see above the level of the landing.

It is another hallway, 10’ across, but it turns immediately to the right. You can only see about 10’ down that way.

Thak, still carrying the unconscious Goblin, follows behind Elspaeth so that both are near the base of the stairs.

Took the liberty of moving you two up just to facilitate the provision of light to see by.

Berith continues down the hallway, carefully stepping with her feet to test the ground. She's feeling more confident about the floor, but doesn't want to get too lazy. Still holding her sword, she slowly walks and looks at the walls and ceiling to see if there are any extremely clean-looking spots or discolorations. Hopefully the hallway is just a hallway.

Berith stops right before the turn to the right, waving the group forward. Once they are close, she's going to crouch down and peek around the corner.

OOC:
The stairway opens onto the end of the hall but on the side. I'll post an image later. But you step into the hall and have to immediately turn right to proceed down it.
Berith continues up and into the hall. Elspaeth's light from below fills this portion of the hall but doesn't travel far along it's length and casts a harsh shadow diagonally across the floor and up the wall about 10-15 feet along it's length. Berith will need to light her own torch or call the others up after her. The dull sound of her boots on the stone make her think that the way ahead can't stretch too far into the darkness.

Berith motions the rest of the group forward, miming that she can't see any further without light. Once the group is close, she'll slowly start moving forward again.
Mar 2, 2026 6:58 pm
Elspaeth cautiously advances with lantern, her crossbow in the cradle of the other arm.
Mar 4, 2026 8:39 am
The light pushes away the darkness revealing a short passage which dead ends after about 25'.

Berith stands in the hall just in front of the stairs. Elspeath stands at the top of the stair on the left so her light can spread down the length of the passage.

Berith studies the passageway, wondering why the passageway extends past the stairs. She'll take a few minutes to explore the passageway to see if she can find any evidence of trap doors in the floor or secret panels in the walls. She'll run her hands down the walls and gingerly step her way down the passageway.
OOC:
Berith knows we need to find a safe place for Borgo to rest so she will take only a few minutes searching. She is going medium speed, not blazing through it, but also not being as careful as she probably should after taking a trip down a chute and almost becoming a monster's dinner.
OOC:
Assuming she doesn't find anything, Berith will walk back to the stairs and start going down them.
"Down we go," Berith mutters as she slowly starts down the stairs. Elspaeth's lantern casting some light to guide her way.

As Berith gets about halfway down the hall, something tugs at her attention. Kneeling down she can see a fine and straight crack or seam extending across the width of the hall from wall to wall. She can't quite tell if it extends farther down the sides of the hall as well, but she can't rule it out. There doesn't seem to be a significant difference to the floor on either side of the seam, but you haven't noticed anything like it elsewhere.

Elspeath strains to see what is going on ahead with Berith. She is very nervous with this entire place proving so far to be a series of death traps.
Mar 8, 2026 4:44 am
"Something is on the ground. It looks like it might be another trap of some kind. I can't tell. Possibly another drop." Backing up a step she drops to her haunches. Berith uses her sword to push gently on the ground, past where the seam is in the floor to see if anything happens.
OOC:
She's keeping her weight back to make sure she doesn't tumble forward if the ground gives way.

The floor doesn't give to her pressing, but she does notice a slight an odd quality to the sound her sword makes as she probes the floor. They don't sound as flat as she might expect.

If the this is a trap door of some kind, it isn't set to give way at the slightest touch. She's going to have to apply quite a bit of force or weight.
Mar 9, 2026 3:39 am
"It feels like a trapdoor. What do you think, should we try the trapdoor or go down the stairs?" Berith stands back up and turns to look questioningly at her fellow adventurers.

Borgo snoozed as the adventurers continued their perilous exploration. His soft snoring could be distinctly heard as soon as the hallways drew silent.
OOC:
Good gracious, this whole dungeon is a death trap!
Mar 10, 2026 1:23 pm
Listening to his soft snores, Berith wished Borgo was awake for this. He was a lot better at stealth and sneaking than she was.

Gently touching the floor again with her sword, Berith is leaning towards trying the trap door.

Would an actual trap be hard to open?
OOC:
it sure is a death trap, we probably should have gone back to one of the older rooms so Borgo could rest.

OOC:
Is Bertith's intention to simply place more and more weight to see if something triggers? Or the floor she's putting her weight on drops away?
Mar 11, 2026 4:31 pm
"Maybe it is not a trapdoor." Elspaeth suggests. "Perhaps its the point of a counterweight to deposit us into the lair of that thing..."
OOC:
Someone has copies of Grimtooth's Trap series...

haha It was more childlike behavior in hoping something would change the 2nd time while waiting for the others to chime in
With Elspaeth's words echoing in her head, Berith drops back down on her haunches, running her hands on the floor to see if she can see any latch or slight indication in the floor. Standing again, she'll pull out her crowbar and see if she can get any leverage in trying to pry open the trapdoor, if that is indeed what it is.
Mar 13, 2026 6:09 am
The floor appears devoid of anything manipulable along the seam of the floor or on the walls near it and there are no visible hinging further along the floor.

Berith finds that while she can get the edge of her crowbar into the narrow gap, she cannot get enough in gain any real purchase. The crowbar simply comes loose and mars the seam where she made the attempt, making more plainly visible. Even if it had grabbed she's not entirely sure she could prize up a door, stone or not, which seems more likely designed to drop down. Her iron spikes do have a finer chisel point, but are too short to use as a lever.

The seam goes across the entire 10' of the passage and you aren't sure how far down the passage it goes, but given things your've heard of you can assume about 10'. Dwarves are capable of very cleverly hiding such hinges and such, but given you've encountered one magical pit drop it's not unlikely you'll encounter the more mundane variety as well. Though Berith and Eslpeath may hope for a
