Despite Kyle’s best efforts, or perhaps because of it, they were about to be late for school.
How did this happen? What will you do, if anything, to try to make it in time?
Apart from the prompt, consider a brief mention of: How did you spend summer break? What were you most looking forward to at school this year? What are you dreading?

Kyle cursed again as he pumped harder on his bicycle pedals. First day of school and Dan pulled this stunt to motivate Kyle to finally get hi license. "If you had yo license I wouldn't have to drive you around. You're old enough and finished drivers ed last year. I see no reason that I should drive you"
So no he was running late. If he had known he could have taken the bus, which he might have to do anyhow once it starts snowing, or just left earlier to get there on time. He cursed again as he knew he was sweating and would totally sting for the first day of the new year. Its not that he didn't want to learn but right after he finished drivers ed at the end of junior year is when all the weird things started happening and he still wasn't confident that putting himself in a thousand pound machine that might glitch at his touch was a good idea.
As he pumped the pedals his thought wandered back over the summer. It had all started when the drone started acting up. He had tried to fix it and return it to school but any time someone tried to reprogram it their system got infected with some weird computer virus. In the end he had been forced to pay for the drone, as well as help to restore the crashed systems. That had resulted in him working at the local tech shack all summer.
Besides learning the joys of low end tech support and all the junk people tried to dump on them or claim they had ruined he had also been learning more about his new abilities. The drone, which he had taken to calling Glitch, turned out to be a help there. The drone had built in cameras and a microphone which seemed to allow it to "See" and "Hear" but thank goodness it didn't have a speaker and was forced to "Talk" via text messaged on it LCD or to it's remote. Some how Glitch seemed to know more about what was going on with Kyle than he did himself and the thing had been tutoring him on how to access and consciously control what he could do.
As he rounded the last corner on the schools long driveway and saw the gates ahead Kyle took a moment to slow down and unzip his jacket. It had been too cool in the morning but now he was hot. He had moved here midway through the previous school year and hadn't had a lot of luck finding new friends. The robotics club had been a great place and at first he was excited. Then Glitch came along and now he just hoped they weren't still mad. Thankfully most of the students affected had been last years seniors and moved on , still that was not a mess he was looking forwards to rehashing. All he wanted to do now was finish high school and if he was lucky get into a decent college. Glitch kept laughing any time he tried to make plans for the future up but wouldn't explain saying "You'll see"

At this point Kyle is not bringing Glitch with him. Whether or not Glitch makes an appearance at school I will leave to you. As his mage abilities were still growing last year Kyle has not yet noticed the full effects of his Arcane Cloak. Since he was only in school for one semester last year others may or may not remember him. He has already had several issues getting his school schedule worked out as his records seem to keep getting lost some how. . . Last edited January 26, 2026 1:55 am

Teenagers on the cusp of adulthood weren't typically given to superstition and other such easily-dismissed thoughts. But if there were a chance for hindsight years from now, the Awakened ones of the Class of '26 might be able look back to as early as their first day of school to realise that change was in the ether. Perhaps it was the greater weave of fate that pushed against their coming back, as if delaying them, keeping them away from the penumbral shores, from what was about to happen.
But they wouldn't have known that of course. To them, the situation was simply that they would be late. Kyle had to pump ever so much harder on his pedals to climb the gentle incline of the long driveway as buses and cars whizzed past him, but he was certainly going to be earlier than the remaining stragglers on foot. At least he wouldn't be as sweaty as the schoolmate on the skateboard! But would any of these last few be on time? If Glitch were with him it would have flashed him a snarky emoticon.

Time to warm up your dice! You will be late for school unless you make a succesful Ability roll of your choice. Narratively justify in your next post whichever one you choose to roll. Alternatively you may use a relevant Sphere power, which for this particular situation will automatically succeed as coincidental magic, but magic was used nonetheless ;) Jan 29, 2026 1:14 am
Kyle presses on, accelerating through the gates and off to one side e of campus. Riding straight up to the bike rack he hopped off and slipped the lock into place. Loosening his jacket to cool off as much as possible before school and grabs his phone to recheck his first class, though hes double checked several times already this morning, and runs for it. Weaving through the scattering of other last minute arrivals Kyle smiles at the absolute randomness of life.

The bicycle though was absolutely suited to navigating past the last bottleneck at the main gate, which was jammed with cars held back by two school buses which had for some reason pulled up side by side, effectively blocking anyone from reaching the drop-off. Kyle was certainly faster than those on foot, and reached the walkway of the student parking lot where the thoughtfully sheltered bicycle racks were, one of the nice touches the school admin had installed. No class in the first lesson despite the timetable, because it was superceded by morning assembly at the auditorium!
Now head over to the main thread!

We need to talk about hacking before I resolve the results of your recent rolls. The general use of Computers is as a Knowledge ability, meaning Kyle is very well-studied in computers and AI. With reference to the previous time we used Wits + Computers, Kyle was able to understand the discrepancy in the timestamps between the auditorium clock and atomic time. He was also able to see which wifi networks were strangely stronger. Things like that make sense to him, but not to someone else who doesn't have any dots in Computers. So general rolls will continue to reveal these results at standard difficulty.Finding data is Perception + Computers, literally you are logged into a computer, and roll this to find stuff on it. Intelligence + Computers is for hacking, and maybe you need a dot in the secondary skill Security. You need hacking software, which requires a roll and takes time to write. Hacking is also an extended (ie, could take hours) and resisted task, so it can't be done instanteously. Hacking a school network would be something like difficulty 8, needing 5-10 successes.
I'm generally using The Book of Secrets p116-127 as a guide to determine what can and cannot be done through hacking.
Another way to sort this all out is through magic use. Eg to steal some online information or data would need Correspondence 3 / Forces 2. Hacking into a secure system will require the same, but at a high difficulty and multiple successes. If you plug in directly to the school's security computer, you would only need Correspondence 2 / Matter 1 to extract the data directly off the hard drive. Mind 2 will let you steal someone's password if they are typing it. Forces 1 in relation to computers generally lets you directly read and understand data, ie digital information is just signals, packets, or code, but you can understand it. Difficulty ratings and number of successes required depend on what you want to achieve.
So at this point, Kyle is trying to do two things? One is to see if he can figure out what's going on through the network, and two, try to figure out what's Zane reacting to by hacking Zane's phone? If so, I can sort this out one by one.
Mar 6, 2026 1:50 am
OK so he is not really hacking at this point then but he is laying the ground work. Checking out networks, firewalls, and other accessible information. Getting access to the cameras and recordings is a long term project. For now he is looking and just hoping to get lucky on identifying any unsecured systems.
The magik will be directed to gaining access to Zach's phone.
I dont have a security skill on my sheet, must have missed that. Where should that be? I have Investigation 1, Research 2, and Technology 3

Got it! Kyle's still in the hall, so I posted narratively in that thread instead. As for Security, I realise it's from Book of Secrets, which isn't in the character sheet. My bad, I didn't open up the use of skills and knowledges from the other books for chargen, so let's ignore that. We will stick to the main book abilities.

+1 Arete up to 2 as he now is actively tying to control things. Bumped Forces, Matter, and Prime to 2 so all 6 initial Spheres are active now+1 to Awareness as he is starting to clue in that there is more than the physical world to pay attention to

"Have a seat." Despite the serious formality of the title of Doctor, Veritas was generally regarded as a motherly figure amongst the staff, more youthful in appearance than one might guess her true age to be, though her chopped bob and bangs, slightly streaked in grey, gave her some kindly gravitas to match.
The counselling room was furnished with soft armchairs and a table for the counsellor, carpeted but enclosed with no natural light. A small shelf sat to one side with a tray of glasses and a water flask.
Today though the shelf was partially blocked by a third person in the room."Ms Nixon will join us today as well, as part of the school's efforts to improve our care programme." The woman looked as proper as she did yesterday, again in nearly the same shade of grey suit. In her hand was a tablet and stylus.
"How are you doing at the moment Kyle. I am concerned about what you may have experienced at yesterday's blackout. Can you tell me a bit about what's going on with you right now? I'm ready to listen if you're willing to share." So that’s what the school was calling it, a blackout.
Her tone was gentle, but nonetheless probing..
[ooc]And noted on the character sheets. There's a Parents' Day somewhere, Uncle Ryan will be involved! :)

Kyles attempt to scan people in the lobby was to see if he could distinguish any differences between those who seemed aware of the strange things going on "Awakened" vs others "sleepers"
Besides information he also wants to work on altering his aura to blend in with normal people as much as possible as he is a bit afraid of what mages seem capable of doing. Not sure if it is something he can even do at this point but it is something he will still try
Jerking his wandering thought back to the present as he realized he had been quiet too long, councilors liked to read waaaayyyyy to much into things like that. Kyle shrugs as he replies. "First day back and there were a few glitches. It's not like a blackout is all that rare. I'm not afraid of the dark or anything so it was not biggie. Just stand sill until the lights come back on." and he shrugs again. "It nice to have events like that. You know, it give memorable experiences so we have things to look back on once we graduate besides long hours in class. "
As he talks he examines "Ms Nixon" surreptitiously. From his point of view she doesn't really seem the type to gain a kids trust. Too stiff and formal. She may deserve respect he guesses but as far as Kyle is concerned Doc Veritas at least put forth the effort so had earned his respect.
Mar 19, 2026 1:14 am
The same disconcerting feeling Kyle had yesterday as his eyes darted to Nixon even as he recounted his version of the affair was amplified, for the guidance counsellor from the Board of Education revealed no expression throughout, save for the occasional scribing on her tablet. This was regardless of what Kyle said or how he said it, nothing seemed to garner a response.
Veritas was in contrast warmer and much more assuring in her manner. "Stress can sometimes make events feel distorted. I am glad you handled the situation so well Kyle, Ashford is proud to have a senior with your maturity. Did you talk to anyone else about it? I trust you were able to speak with them in the same way."
But there it was. All savvy teens were alike, able to give an account to an adult to get out of trouble. The question was whether Kyle had gone too far in trying in his version in saying how memorable it was, and whether Veritas believed him at all.
Kyle had the feeling though that the version of the story he chose to tell was somehow important to himself personally. That it would shape how he dealt with his newly experienced reality in some way.
On a different note, regarding Kyle detecting the awakened vs sleepers, a successful Prime roll would've done that, but unfortunately he botched. Kyle can strengthen his Arcane if he wants to keep even more hidden, and I believe there are one or two Merits that aid that. At this stage, if you still like to move dots around for these to make him more undetectable, I'll allow it.

Time for a Manipulation+Subterfuge roll, at difficulty 7, and you'll need 3 successes, representing the wisdom of the adults in the room when dealing with teens and their tales. Graceless affects this roll with a 1 die penalty. On a different note, regarding Kyle detecting the awakened vs sleepers, a successful Prime roll would've done that, but unfortunately he botched. OOC:
With a Manipulation of 1 and Subterfuge of 0 this is an impossible test. Which is why Kyle did not lie. I assume the test to see if the adults feel Kyle is being forthcoming. Kyle is not a social character so I will not adjust either of those stats.Would Arcane apply here? The text states it applies to stealth but since this situation is to allow Kyle to hide things
The only thing I found that might fit with Kyle is the Mundane Identity merrit. I found a reference that it allows mages with high Arcane to still function with the Arcane reinforcing the mundane identity vs just erasing it. This might be worth it to have that as a facade to cover his progression into becoming a mage. Other sources merge Mundane identity with Alternate Identity background.
Rolls
MAN + Subterfuge - (1d10+0d10)
(6) + (0) = 6
Arcane - (4d10)
(86107) = 31
Mar 20, 2026 5:15 pm
OOC:
It's good to have some honest PCs! Bard's Tongue means Kyle can't lie (or you'll need to spend Willpower just to be able to do so). Unobtrusive merit can work, so can Poker Face, for specific circumstances. Arcane less so, I feel Arcane is more about helping the mage hide himself rather than helping to conceal verbal truth. So Veritas won't believe him when he says the blackout was a nice experience. I must look up the wording of the Mundane Identity merit, (might be in an earlier edition) but iirc it lets the mage pretend to be a regular person. So it can help Kyle pretend to be not-a-mage. But is still doesn't help Kyle hide truth. A reliable method is to use the Prime sphere to conceal magical identity as much as it's also used to reveal magical identity.
I think one major key tension in MtA is about concealing the magic so as not to upset reality, hence the coincidental vs vulgar dichotomy, mages trying to pretend they aren't doing magic, etc. So there's always a chance of being found out I think.
I'll write up the result of your roll, but I'll hold if you want to adjust some chargen things.
Mar 20, 2026 7:37 pm
OOC:
That all makes sence. As for the blackout I think Kyle would be more curious than alarmed, though he would be a bit concerned about the vanishing student. But the fact that Emily was in multiple concurrent encounters his current theory is time travel or parallel reality overlap. Take from that and my roll vs difficulty what you will.
As for Mundane Identity it seems to be a variant of Alternate Identity with a bonus to resist Quiet
I just want Kyles mundane life to continue with close relations. So basically the Arcane works as stated but close relations have not trouble remembering his mundane identity. That is How I would like it to be. No need for the quiet benefit. Would this work as a 1 point merit?

"I have the impression that there is something you would like to tell me, but you are unsure whether you ought to or not. Since talking about it might be difficult, tell me instead why you are hesitant. Is it hard for you to explain it in a way that you think it ought to be understood? Are you struggling with how it makes you feel right now? Or are you afraid of what might happen if you reveal it?" Veritas nudged Kyle along with her usual gentle affirmative tone, which would have felt entirely safe were it not for the fact that Kyle could not ignore the presence of Nixon still sitting in the periphery.
OOC:
With that roll, and also given Kyle's stats and abilities, let's agree that Kyle can't conceal from Vertias the fact that he's not telling everything he knows. So he'll need to find something to say that'll get him out of here.Mar 30, 2026 9:43 am
OOC:
Back to chargen, sure, shall we say for our homebrew purposes that a Mundane Identity 1 point merit gives the benefit that people will tend to associate Kyle with being a mundane or a sleeper, even in situations where magic is being used (ie, they are more likely to look at other people or other sources first). It's not an illusion, and certainly not foolproof, because there's actual magic that can be used to conceal, it's more the vibe he gives off. If he chooses to reveal his own truth to others, then of course the merit is irrelevant. In addition, I shall consider this merit to allow Arcane to be used in some other relevant situations and not limited only to Stealth, such as Subterfuge when pretending to be a non-mage. Mar 31, 2026 12:35 am
Kyle looks down at the ground for a bit and shrugs "It's not bid deal. It's just that I, uh, got a bit bored and kind of took over a group of freshmen. I mean I really didnt take a group, just that I notices some groups got too bit to handle as the freshmen moved around, not all of them stayed in their assigned groups, and so I decided to help out some other seniors who were swamped so I toke some of the better behaved ones to tour and then we joined up with some other groups just before the blackout and well" though all of this Kyle kept speeding up and he blurted the truth of the situation, or at least a truth. "Anyhow after the blackout I realized I didn't really have a roster so am not entirely sure no one wandered off. I am pretty sure I still had all of the kids I took from the other groups but there were some who decided to tag along with us, or the other groups going the same way? Anyhow after the light came on some people seemed to be looking for some missing freshmen. All I know is that the ones I was guiding were still there. The rest was a mess. Total chaos. Then the teachers took over so I just split once the freshmen we in hand by an adult." Kyle focuses on the anxiety of the temporary authority he had taken upon himself then the relief when it was all over. The rest of the things were just a jumble and Kyle was not quite sure what pieces belonged to which narrative so he stuck to the common knowledge of the other students and fact.

"Mm-hmm," Veritas nodded and interjected at the appropriate moments as Kyle recounted what he considered was as accurate an account of how he involved himself in yesterday's proceedings. He was discovering through, that he felt compelled to tell Veritas about the other strange occurrences he had observed, even though he knew it wasn't the wisest thing to do and could potentially not just get himself, but some of the others in trouble as well. Unless he searched within to find the inner strength to hold his tongue.
OOC:
While Kyle did indeed account accurately what happened to him, the Bard's Tongue flaw, plus the fact that he failed the roll, means he is compelled to tell Veritas about his observations and what he was trying to do yesterday in terms of his abilities, his misgivings about Emily and also Zane. (it's a supernatural flaw, like a curse). You may spend 1 Willpower to keep Kyle from revealing it. Otherwise Kyle has to confess it.Apr 1, 2026 5:11 pm
Kyle sticks to the public story and theorizes about rumors from others but will avoid revealing anything out of the ordinary that he personally experienced unless the general student body was discussing it and definitely reveals nothing of his own abilities
About the Bards Tongue. The flawseems you state that he speaks in a more prophetic manner than speaking personal truths. I will think over things and come up with a couple things he might say

Kyle seems to have a knack for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, and then it happens. Every time this happens Kyle groans and inevitably it makes those around him think of him as unlucky and flinch anytime he mentions one of the possibility he inevitably thinks of. He can't help it. It just happens.

"Honestly, the weirdest thing was how some of the adults reacted. Overreacted if you ask me. I mean, it was just a black out, right? The more adults react to 'calm and comfort' kids the more they tend to get worked up. Kids watch adults and when you react to something it make us more anxious. The more you reassure some people the more they get worked up. It was the first day of school. Anyone who expected it to all go according to plan to just has unrealistic expectations. It not like anyone actually got hurt or lost, right?"
Slumping back in his chair he rolls his eyes in exasperation to cover a flinch as that last bit was a slip of the tongue.

"That is a very mature view Kyle." Veritas nodded approvingly. "I trust you if you do see others who are anxious, you will also help to assure them that everything is well. Will you do that Kyle?" The question was rhetorical as Veritas brought the session to a close. And still, Nixon said nothing throughout.

Spending that 1 Willpower is sufficient for Kyle's cover up and also fixes the failed roll from earlier. Time to retreat out of here!Apr 7, 2026 1:56 pm
Kyle is shifting to an artificer theme along the lines of Son's if Ether. His foci will suck to physical tools and a blend of creative imagination and algorithms possibly channeled through diagrams and equations

Most of them are pretty high level though, check out p508's table on Crafting Wonders, except for Trinkets, which can be made with Prime 2 (which infuses the magic) + relevant Sphere (which specifies the effect). Trinkets are one-shot items.Another way of possessing magic items is to have the Wonder background, this costs points. But the item is permanent, and yours.

I am thinking Kyle will approach magic from the path of a artificer and have more prepared magic tools than spontaneous powers. Whether this is through Trinkets, Wonders, or a variety of Foci will be something that moves with the story.Kyle's main focus now is to blend in with the crowd and stay off the radar of whatever is "watching" and "feeding" off of thing as well as any authoritarian people who look to be area of the issues but pushing the mass concurrences or seems too interested in Kyle of the other kids. It is not that he thinks people are after them but it is clear to him there is an "official story" and things are being kept hidden that Kyle wants to understand before making any decisions.

Kyle is curious about the school and apparent density of "Awoken"(?) individuals/entities. However the thing feeding off the area is freaking him out. He has a couple of priorities and top on them is to not be fed on or get the attention of the feeder or anything else with more power than himself. It seems that though it is clear other awoken have some power they are not omniscient so Kyle want to stay below their radar and is thinking of ways to practice and use his new powers without drawing direct attention to himself.Would Kyle need points in Correspondence to be able to trigger remote magic via drones or other gadgets acting as foci or trinkets?
I am thinking of something like small cheap kits, mounted to drones or placed in fixed points, used to create his own wireless network, hidden in the jumble of nets already on campus, that he can then use as a conduit to remote monitor or trigger effect near one of his tools.

Kyle will begin tinkering in an attempt to better understand his abilities as well as how well he can sense technology and/or information manipulation with code vs with magick. Using scraps in his shop he starts working on something to help deliver the upload as quietly and stealthily as possible if he has time. (either a trinket of just a prepared magic effect to be triggered later)
He makes sure to get home before uncle Ryan with enough time to each and then meet up with the others at Myra's

Before I reply to Kyle's tinkering in his Sanctum, please see the main thread. There's one more thing Kyle might discover, since he's been on the alert all this while and wary of who's watching them. Go ahead and reply there first, only when we're done there will we come back here for the solo.May 27, 2026 1:10 pm
Kyle gets as much work done as he can, attempting a few experiments mixing magic with technology to bypass computer or phone restrictions to upload the images as he promised. he doesn't want to stay to lake and would love to go to meet up with the others but will have to head home before that to check in with his uncle. He has no idea how long the others plan to meet so will just get as much done as possible and give them a call after getting dinner at home.

Kyle prepared whatever he could. Doing so in his hideaway did ensure the privacy of what he was attempting; if he had worked in school, or plugged into the wifi network at home, he would have to work so much harder to scrub anything that could be traced back to me. His preparations on what Jonathan gave him were reasonably complete. All that was needed was to turn up in school tomorrow and deploy his upload to the few more vulnerable social media accounts he found and tweak the algorithms so that their social feeds rose to the top of the searches amongst friends. That'll be sure to incite the buzz that Jonathan was thinking of.
Night was beginning to fall, and thanks to his newfound awareness he did feel as if the woods were not as innocent as he used to think they were, before his awakening. Dinner was waiting for him at home, uncle Ryan was as responsible and as caring a surrogate parent as Kyle could ask for, and Kyle had never given him cause to worry about anything. Kyle had discovered a number of things today: how the counselling centre disrupted his own phone scans of the place, how there were others in school which abilities, such as Zane, not just the immediate group he spoke with, and how the inexplicable 'darkness' of the some part of the school network was still a mystery to be solved. Most immediately, he discovered how someone had come close enough to detect his sanctum, someone whom Kyle could trace as 'magical', who had either entered school or left school, passing by his hideout.
These last thoughts remained in his mind as he cycled home. He wondered if he could, in his tinkering about with robotics, whether he could invent things to help him detect other such phenomena. Amusingly, even as he thought this, Glitch seemed to signal to him its approval, as if it were encouraging Kyle to make more stuff just like how Glitch was invented.

Just confirming Kyle in his Sanctum, finishing up on all the successes you rolled earlier. No Santcum breach by the unknown passerby, but Kyle feels that the passerby knows it's a Sanctum. Am also remembering your mentioning how to do crafting. I've seeded some possibilties for Kyle, but there can be other things to investigate, depending on which other directions the group takes. OOC:
To be clear, Kyle believes someone came this way and spotted his Sanctum before he arrived after school?Well, I guess that's the price of convenience, increased traffic and chances of exposure. Now how to fix that? . . . .
You mentioned that his sanctum had limited space. Perhaps the cavern below the outbuilding is the sanctum and the upper rooms are just a facade. He can do robotics work there but any real magical shielding/cloaking is focuses around the basement which would hide any magical tinkering
Not wanting to get into trouble with his uncle, Kyle cleans up and locks up. Racing home on his bike, with Glitch latched onto the top of his pack, Kyle wondered if ti was too late to join the others. It was getting dark and he doubted that uncle Ryan would want to take him someplace. But if it was to socialize it might be possible. Ryan was always trying to get him to do more stuff with other teens.
As he bikes he ponders the equipment me might need for the aura recorder/detector/tracker. He starts rambling ideas out loud and listening to Glitch's responses. He got in this habit over the summer and though Glitch does not speak (other than the occasional sound byte played back at the most inopportune or hilarious times), Kyle swears the drone is communicating and somehow he understands most of what it 'says'

Myra's invitation to her place was still open. All Kyle needed to do was to let his uncle know where he was going and what time he might be back. Uncle Ryan certainly did think that Kyle should 'get out more often', and not spend all day glued to his computer or his engineering tinkering. This was why Kyle kept most of his science experiments away from home; it wouldn't do to start filling up the garage which all the bits and bobs and his equipment. Which was why his little hideaway was perfect for the times where he didn't want to be constrained by the school labs or the tech workshop. He was proud of the little stash he had put together here, and it puzzled him how come someone finally managed to notice it, for it had remained largely ignored for all the time he had been using it. But whomever did didn't seem to be curious enough to intrude further; they didn't trepass or vandalise or break in.
Rules-wise, a Sanctum is the size of a room, max 500 sqft but typically smaller. (Examples include a yoga loft, sacred grove, basement den, photograhy studio, classroom lab, tiny shrine, small bookstore, etc) You can have a tiny cavern if you prefer rather than a tiny building, same small size, like a hole leading to a small cave (home to raccoons? bats?). In terms of eco-system I'm thinking it's unlikely that there's a small house in the woods so near school and that the house hides a cavern complex underneath it for all these years.

OOC:
Yes that's correct. Kyle detected someone's traffic that took them near enough to the Sanctum, but they didn't do anything to it. I'l also hint that this is not a regular occurrence, but a one-off. There's no path or anything that is being used by people coming and going. You Have Sanctum 2, which means it has an Arcane rating of 2 which hides the magic. Ratings can go up to 5. I guess I'm hinting at the fact that the person who spotted it managed to see past a -2 modifier that's all.Rules-wise, a Sanctum is the size of a room, max 500 sqft but typically smaller. I imagine the building is more of a shed than a house. Perhaps it was originally used to store tools or a vehicle. Maybe part of the school historically and used by woodsmen or groundskeepers but since then fallen to disuse. Or part of another structure, like a home deep in the woods that fell to fire or the like so access to the shed faded in the decades since resulting in the current 'trail'. Since it is so small the building would not be part of the sanctuary. Not a big deal just an idea. Last edited June 2, 2026 2:12 pm

Getting a response from Myra Kyle sends a quick text to Ryan
Heading home
Invited to a friends house
Can I get a lift?
Upon reaching home, Kyle called out to his uncle he was home, dashed into his room, grabbed a new set of cloths, and bolted into the bathroom for a quick shower. Not bothering to let the water get warm the cold shower helped cool Kyle off and in a minute he was toweling off then getting dressed.
Uncle Ryan's voice through the door startled Kyle. "Hey, what's with the last minute heads up? I don't mind giving you a lift but an earlier heads up would have been nice."
Kyle Called back as he pulled on his pants before unlocking the door, not bothering to open it, leaving that to Ryan. "Sorry. I got held up working on a project and didn't realize how late it is. So can we go? " Finishing pulling on his clothes he opened the door to look at his uncle.

That's what I imagined the building to be as well. Your rationale is perfect! It's an old campus, the core structure, Founder's Hall is over a hundred years old. Campus premises would've run into the woods, with groundskeepers, outbuildings such as sheds and even quarters, now cleared or disused. The school fence is surely a more modern addition. So it's a lucky find for Kyle, to have discovered a hideaway to do his thing. Great idea! Jun 26, 2026 2:52 am

FYI : Reading up on mage lore I came across the Syndicate. I had known about them in some sense, mostly their enforcers the hollow men, but there are some points of the syndicate ideology that seem interesting to Kyle. Namely "Primal Utility" and their view on the un-awoken masses. However, rather than investing/manipulating the masses Kyle likes the idea of self investment and accumulating power through preparation and effort. Many of the concepts might cross apply and any Syndicate agent might be able to work on Kyles sympathies to the masses and/or the ideology of investment. While I still feel Kyle will likely end up along the path of Sons of Ethos, or similar, I would like to also incorporate aspects of Primal Utility in his magical manipulation/preparation. Would this be ok?

OOC:
Plot-wise, our young mage Kyle could possibly lean towards the Syndicate or Sons of Ether, as the opportunities arise. I merely directed everyone to the traditional Traditions first, because that's probably what happens first, but if Kyle learns other things along the way, such as if he learns more about the powers of the Technocracy, you could choose for him to head that way. Primal Utility is the Technocracy's reality of the Prime Sphere. It deals with hypereconomics, ie the essence of magic is about who controls the resources controls the power. Perhaps Kyle could start by learning about maths or economics in his courses. At this point, I'd say that Kyle has zero understanding of Primal Utility. (Rules-wise, that's a different Sphere, you'll need to get xp to learn that Sphere etc)
Jun 29, 2026 3:36 am
OOC:
All good. Would Primal Utility require a full XP purchase or could it be blended? Anyhow I dont think I am strictly speaking interested in the economics aspect but more in the general idea / theme. More like resource management. "Invest" into object / rituals / team / etc such that he has created a basis of magic not dependent on vulgarity but on preparation. But this is something we can work out along the way. Just wanted to put the seed of the idea out there so you understand where Kyle is heading/stealing ideas from
