1 - Kyle Murphy

Despite Kyle’s best efforts, or perhaps because of it, they were about to be late for school.

How did this happen? What will you do, if anything, to try to make it in time?
OOC:
Welcome to your first post, but read the main thread first!
Apart from the prompt, consider a brief mention of: How did you spend summer break? What were you most looking forward to at school this year? What are you dreading?
Jan 26, 2026 1:51 am
Kyle cursed again as he pumped harder on his bicycle pedals. First day of school and Dan pulled this stunt to motivate Kyle to finally get hi license. "If you had yo license I wouldn't have to drive you around. You're old enough and finished drivers ed last year. I see no reason that I should drive you"

So no he was running late. If he had known he could have taken the bus, which he might have to do anyhow once it starts snowing, or just left earlier to get there on time. He cursed again as he knew he was sweating and would totally sting for the first day of the new year. Its not that he didn't want to learn but right after he finished drivers ed at the end of junior year is when all the weird things started happening and he still wasn't confident that putting himself in a thousand pound machine that might glitch at his touch was a good idea.

As he pumped the pedals his thought wandered back over the summer. It had all started when the drone started acting up. He had tried to fix it and return it to school but any time someone tried to reprogram it their system got infected with some weird computer virus. In the end he had been forced to pay for the drone, as well as help to restore the crashed systems. That had resulted in him working at the local tech shack all summer.

Besides learning the joys of low end tech support and all the junk people tried to dump on them or claim they had ruined he had also been learning more about his new abilities. The drone, which he had taken to calling Glitch, turned out to be a help there. The drone had built in cameras and a microphone which seemed to allow it to "See" and "Hear" but thank goodness it didn't have a speaker and was forced to "Talk" via text messaged on it LCD or to it's remote. Some how Glitch seemed to know more about what was going on with Kyle than he did himself and the thing had been tutoring him on how to access and consciously control what he could do.

As he rounded the last corner on the schools long driveway and saw the gates ahead Kyle took a moment to slow down and unzip his jacket. It had been too cool in the morning but now he was hot. He had moved here midway through the previous school year and hadn't had a lot of luck finding new friends. The robotics club had been a great place and at first he was excited. Then Glitch came along and now he just hoped they weren't still mad. Thankfully most of the students affected had been last years seniors and moved on , still that was not a mess he was looking forwards to rehashing. All he wanted to do now was finish high school and if he was lucky get into a decent college. Glitch kept laughing any time he tried to make plans for the future up but wouldn't explain saying "You'll see"
OOC:
At this point Kyle is not bringing Glitch with him. Whether or not Glitch makes an appearance at school I will leave to you. As his mage abilities were still growing last year Kyle has not yet noticed the full effects of his Arcane Cloak. Since he was only in school for one semester last year others may or may not remember him. He has already had several issues getting his school schedule worked out as his records seem to keep getting lost some how. . .

Teenagers on the cusp of adulthood weren't typically given to superstition and other such easily-dismissed thoughts. But if there were a chance for hindsight years from now, the Awakened ones of the Class of '26 might be able look back to as early as their first day of school to realise that change was in the ether. Perhaps it was the greater weave of fate that pushed against their coming back, as if delaying them, keeping them away from the penumbral shores, from what was about to happen.

But they wouldn't have known that of course. To them, the situation was simply that they would be late. Kyle had to pump ever so much harder on his pedals to climb the gentle incline of the long driveway as buses and cars whizzed past him, but he was certainly going to be earlier than the remaining stragglers on foot. At least he wouldn't be as sweaty as the schoolmate on the skateboard! But would any of these last few be on time? If Glitch were with him it would have flashed him a snarky emoticon.
OOC:
Time to warm up your dice! You will be late for school unless you make a succesful Ability roll of your choice. Narratively justify in your next post whichever one you choose to roll. Alternatively you may use a relevant Sphere power, which for this particular situation will automatically succeed as coincidental magic, but magic was used nonetheless ;)

Kyle presses on, accelerating through the gates and off to one side e of campus. Riding straight up to the bike rack he hopped off and slipped the lock into place. Loosening his jacket to cool off as much as possible before school and grabs his phone to recheck his first class, though hes double checked several times already this morning, and runs for it. Weaving through the scattering of other last minute arrivals Kyle smiles at the absolute randomness of life.

STR 3 + Athletics 2 =>3,4,6,9,10 3 success, right?

The bicycle though was absolutely suited to navigating past the last bottleneck at the main gate, which was jammed with cars held back by two school buses which had for some reason pulled up side by side, effectively blocking anyone from reaching the drop-off. Kyle was certainly faster than those on foot, and reached the walkway of the student parking lot where the thoughtfully sheltered bicycle racks were, one of the nice touches the school admin had installed. No class in the first lesson despite the timetable, because it was superceded by morning assembly at the auditorium!
OOC:
Yep three successes!

Now head over to the main thread!

Rolls

Arete - (3d10)

OOC:
We need to talk about hacking before I resolve the results of your recent rolls. The general use of Computers is as a Knowledge ability, meaning Kyle is very well-studied in computers and AI. With reference to the previous time we used Wits + Computers, Kyle was able to understand the discrepancy in the timestamps between the auditorium clock and atomic time. He was also able to see which wifi networks were strangely stronger. Things like that make sense to him, but not to someone else who doesn't have any dots in Computers. So general rolls will continue to reveal these results at standard difficulty.

Finding data is Perception + Computers, literally you are logged into a computer, and roll this to find stuff on it. Intelligence + Computers is for hacking, and maybe you need a dot in the secondary skill Security. You need hacking software, which requires a roll and takes time to write. Hacking is also an extended (ie, could take hours) and resisted task, so it can't be done instanteously. Hacking a school network would be something like difficulty 8, needing 5-10 successes.

I'm generally using The Book of Secrets p116-127 as a guide to determine what can and cannot be done through hacking.

Another way to sort this all out is through magic use. Eg to steal some online information or data would need Correspondence 3 / Forces 2. Hacking into a secure system will require the same, but at a high difficulty and multiple successes. If you plug in directly to the school's security computer, you would only need Correspondence 2 / Matter 1 to extract the data directly off the hard drive. Mind 2 will let you steal someone's password if they are typing it. Forces 1 in relation to computers generally lets you directly read and understand data, ie digital information is just signals, packets, or code, but you can understand it. Difficulty ratings and number of successes required depend on what you want to achieve.

So at this point, Kyle is trying to do two things? One is to see if he can figure out what's going on through the network, and two, try to figure out what's Zane reacting to by hacking Zane's phone? If so, I can sort this out one by one.
Mar 6, 2026 1:50 am
OK so he is not really hacking at this point then but he is laying the ground work. Checking out networks, firewalls, and other accessible information. Getting access to the cameras and recordings is a long term project. For now he is looking and just hoping to get lucky on identifying any unsecured systems.

The magik will be directed to gaining access to Zach's phone.

I dont have a security skill on my sheet, must have missed that. Where should that be? I have Investigation 1, Research 2, and Technology 3

Got it! Kyle's still in the hall, so I posted narratively in that thread instead.

As for Security, I realise it's from Book of Secrets, which isn't in the character sheet. My bad, I didn't open up the use of skills and knowledges from the other books for chargen, so let's ignore that. We will stick to the main book abilities.

Kyle bikes home and spends the afternoon reviewing his captured logs as well as working on his new senses as well as some more active use of his abilities. If Zane could sense Kyles actions then he needs to work on being more subtle as well as being more aware of things around him. Maybe his new powers arn't as rare as he initially though? He tinkers a bit with Glitch and tries to, once again, figure out just how much the drone is capable of and how it does what it does, which is way beyond what his "simple" programs should let him do.
OOC:
+1 Arete up to 2 as he now is actively tying to control things. Bumped Forces, Matter, and Prime to 2 so all 6 initial Spheres are active now
+1 to Awareness as he is starting to clue in that there is more than the physical world to pay attention to
That he skims over the days events night with his Uncle Ryan, but avoid any odd details. First day back in his last year of school and things are getting interesting. He wishes he had someone he could talk to more about this but he really hasn't connected all that well with his uncle, though he can tell the guy cares and is trying.
OOC:
Just a reminder, I have the "Ward" at 3 so Uncle Ryan will likely get involved somehow and Bard's Tongue" flaw though I am now sure how that might manifest..

"Have a seat." Despite the serious formality of the title of Doctor, Veritas was generally regarded as a motherly figure amongst the staff, more youthful in appearance than one might guess her true age to be, though her chopped bob and bangs, slightly streaked in grey, gave her some kindly gravitas to match.

The counselling room was furnished with soft armchairs and a table for the counsellor, carpeted but enclosed with no natural light. A small shelf sat to one side with a tray of glasses and a water flask.

Today though the shelf was partially blocked by a third person in the room."Ms Nixon will join us today as well, as part of the school's efforts to improve our care programme." The woman looked as proper as she did yesterday, again in nearly the same shade of grey suit. In her hand was a tablet and stylus.

"How are you doing at the moment Kyle. I am concerned about what you may have experienced at yesterday's blackout. Can you tell me a bit about what's going on with you right now? I'm ready to listen if you're willing to share." So that’s what the school was calling it, a blackout.

Her tone was gentle, but nonetheless probing..
OOC:
As mentioned, this is your individual scene within the main thread, where you have to see the counsellor. The overall conversation in the waiting room was and is still ongoing, and when you leave this session the other six are still outside talking. (I’m running this simultaneously across all threads so we don’t hold up the main thread too much.)
[ooc]And noted on the character sheets. There's a Parents' Day somewhere, Uncle Ryan will be involved! :)

OOC:

Kyles attempt to scan people in the lobby was to see if he could distinguish any differences between those who seemed aware of the strange things going on "Awakened" vs others "sleepers"
Besides information he also wants to work on altering his aura to blend in with normal people as much as possible as he is a bit afraid of what mages seem capable of doing. Not sure if it is something he can even do at this point but it is something he will still try
Kyle signs and grumbles inwardly. Ever since his parents accident people keep trying to get him to talk about how he is doing or feeling. Kyle is pretty sure he doesn't work like everyone else. First of all he is not 100% convinced his parents are dead, as they have yet to recover any bodies, though he is pretty sure it is what happened. Still, so what? Most people seem so intent on focusing on the tragedy they ignore how Kyle is actually doing, which in his opinion is pretty well. Sure having to leave his siblings and moving in with his uncle was an adjustment but he would be out of school by the end of the year and he could go anywhere he wanted to then. Seems to him most kids fled home for college or a job as quick as they could. Now Kyle and his siblings actually tried to stay in touch.

Jerking his wandering thought back to the present as he realized he had been quiet too long, councilors liked to read waaaayyyyy to much into things like that. Kyle shrugs as he replies. "First day back and there were a few glitches. It's not like a blackout is all that rare. I'm not afraid of the dark or anything so it was not biggie. Just stand sill until the lights come back on." and he shrugs again. "It nice to have events like that. You know, it give memorable experiences so we have things to look back on once we graduate besides long hours in class. "

As he talks he examines "Ms Nixon" surreptitiously. From his point of view she doesn't really seem the type to gain a kids trust. Too stiff and formal. She may deserve respect he guesses but as far as Kyle is concerned Doc Veritas at least put forth the effort so had earned his respect.
Mar 19, 2026 1:14 am
The same disconcerting feeling Kyle had yesterday as his eyes darted to Nixon even as he recounted his version of the affair was amplified, for the guidance counsellor from the Board of Education revealed no expression throughout, save for the occasional scribing on her tablet. This was regardless of what Kyle said or how he said it, nothing seemed to garner a response.

Veritas was in contrast warmer and much more assuring in her manner. "Stress can sometimes make events feel distorted. I am glad you handled the situation so well Kyle, Ashford is proud to have a senior with your maturity. Did you talk to anyone else about it? I trust you were able to speak with them in the same way."

But there it was. All savvy teens were alike, able to give an account to an adult to get out of trouble. The question was whether Kyle had gone too far in trying in his version in saying how memorable it was, and whether Veritas believed him at all.

Kyle had the feeling though that the version of the story he chose to tell was somehow important to himself personally. That it would shape how he dealt with his newly experienced reality in some way.
OOC:
Time for a Manipulation+Subterfuge roll, at difficulty 7, and you'll need 3 successes, representing the wisdom of the adults in the room when dealing with teens and their tales. Graceless affects this roll with a 1 die penalty.

On a different note, regarding Kyle detecting the awakened vs sleepers, a successful Prime roll would've done that, but unfortunately he botched. Kyle can strengthen his Arcane if he wants to keep even more hidden, and I believe there are one or two Merits that aid that. At this stage, if you still like to move dots around for these to make him more undetectable, I'll allow it.
Mar 19, 2026 1:09 pm
OOC:
With a Manipulation of 1 and Subterfuge of 0 this is an impossible test. Which is why Kyle did not lie. I assume the test to see if the adults feel Kyle is being forthcoming. Kyle is not a social character so I will not adjust either of those stats.
Would Arcane apply here? The text states it applies to stealth but since this situation is to allow Kyle to hide things
The only thing I found that might fit with Kyle is the Mundane Identity merrit. I found a reference that it allows mages with high Arcane to still function with the Arcane reinforcing the mundane identity vs just erasing it. This might be worth it to have that as a facade to cover his progression into becoming a mage. Other sources merge Mundane identity with Alternate Identity background.

Rolls

MAN + Subterfuge - (1d10+0d10)

(6) + (0) = 6

Arcane - (4d10)

(86107) = 31

Mar 20, 2026 5:15 pm
OOC:
It's good to have some honest PCs! Bard's Tongue means Kyle can't lie (or you'll need to spend Willpower just to be able to do so). Unobtrusive merit can work, so can Poker Face, for specific circumstances. Arcane less so, I feel Arcane is more about helping the mage hide himself rather than helping to conceal verbal truth. So Veritas won't believe him when he says the blackout was a nice experience.
I must look up the wording of the Mundane Identity merit, (might be in an earlier edition) but iirc it lets the mage pretend to be a regular person. So it can help Kyle pretend to be not-a-mage. But is still doesn't help Kyle hide truth. A reliable method is to use the Prime sphere to conceal magical identity as much as it's also used to reveal magical identity.
I think one major key tension in MtA is about concealing the magic so as not to upset reality, hence the coincidental vs vulgar dichotomy, mages trying to pretend they aren't doing magic, etc. So there's always a chance of being found out I think.
I'll write up the result of your roll, but I'll hold if you want to adjust some chargen things.
Mar 20, 2026 7:37 pm
OOC:
That all makes sence.

As for the blackout I think Kyle would be more curious than alarmed, though he would be a bit concerned about the vanishing student. But the fact that Emily was in multiple concurrent encounters his current theory is time travel or parallel reality overlap. Take from that and my roll vs difficulty what you will.

As for Mundane Identity it seems to be a variant of Alternate Identity with a bonus to resist Quiet
I just want Kyles mundane life to continue with close relations. So basically the Arcane works as stated but close relations have not trouble remembering his mundane identity. That is How I would like it to be. No need for the quiet benefit. Would this work as a 1 point merit?

"I have the impression that there is something you would like to tell me, but you are unsure whether you ought to or not. Since talking about it might be difficult, tell me instead why you are hesitant. Is it hard for you to explain it in a way that you think it ought to be understood? Are you struggling with how it makes you feel right now? Or are you afraid of what might happen if you reveal it?" Veritas nudged Kyle along with her usual gentle affirmative tone, which would have felt entirely safe were it not for the fact that Kyle could not ignore the presence of Nixon still sitting in the periphery.
OOC:
With that roll, and also given Kyle's stats and abilities, let's agree that Kyle can't conceal from Vertias the fact that he's not telling everything he knows. So he'll need to find something to say that'll get him out of here.
Mar 30, 2026 9:43 am
OOC:
Back to chargen, sure, shall we say for our homebrew purposes that a Mundane Identity 1 point merit gives the benefit that people will tend to associate Kyle with being a mundane or a sleeper, even in situations where magic is being used (ie, they are more likely to look at other people or other sources first). It's not an illusion, and certainly not foolproof, because there's actual magic that can be used to conceal, it's more the vibe he gives off. If he chooses to reveal his own truth to others, then of course the merit is irrelevant. In addition, I shall consider this merit to allow Arcane to be used in some other relevant situations and not limited only to Stealth, such as Subterfuge when pretending to be a non-mage.
