Kyle looks down at the ground for a bit and shrugs "It's not bid deal. It's just that I, uh, got a bit bored and kind of took over a group of freshmen. I mean I really didnt take a group, just that I notices some groups got too bit to handle as the freshmen moved around, not all of them stayed in their assigned groups, and so I decided to help out some other seniors who were swamped so I toke some of the better behaved ones to tour and then we joined up with some other groups just before the blackout and well" though all of this Kyle kept speeding up and he blurted the truth of the situation, or at least a truth. "Anyhow after the blackout I realized I didn't really have a roster so am not entirely sure no one wandered off. I am pretty sure I still had all of the kids I took from the other groups but there were some who decided to tag along with us, or the other groups going the same way? Anyhow after the light came on some people seemed to be looking for some missing freshmen. All I know is that the ones I was guiding were still there. The rest was a mess. Total chaos. Then the teachers took over so I just split once the freshmen we in hand by an adult." Kyle focuses on the anxiety of the temporary authority he had taken upon himself then the relief when it was all over. The rest of the things were just a jumble and Kyle was not quite sure what pieces belonged to which narrative so he stuck to the common knowledge of the other students and fact.

"Mm-hmm," Veritas nodded and interjected at the appropriate moments as Kyle recounted what he considered was as accurate an account of how he involved himself in yesterday's proceedings. He was discovering through, that he felt compelled to tell Veritas about the other strange occurrences he had observed, even though he knew it wasn't the wisest thing to do and could potentially not just get himself, but some of the others in trouble as well. Unless he searched within to find the inner strength to hold his tongue.
OOC:
While Kyle did indeed account accurately what happened to him, the Bard's Tongue flaw, plus the fact that he failed the roll, means he is compelled to tell Veritas about his observations and what he was trying to do yesterday in terms of his abilities, his misgivings about Emily and also Zane. (it's a supernatural flaw, like a curse). You may spend 1 Willpower to keep Kyle from revealing it. Otherwise Kyle has to confess it.
Apr 1, 2026 5:11 pm
Kyle sticks to the public story and theorizes about rumors from others but will avoid revealing anything out of the ordinary that he personally experienced unless the general student body was discussing it and definitely reveals nothing of his own abilities
OOC:

About the Bards Tongue. The flawseems you state that he speaks in a more prophetic manner than speaking personal truths. I will think over things and come up with a couple things he might say

"Honestly, the weirdest thing was how some of the adults reacted. Overreacted if you ask me. I mean, it was just a black out, right? The more adults react to 'calm and comfort' kids the more they tend to get worked up. Kids watch adults and when you react to something it make us more anxious. The more you reassure some people the more they get worked up. It was the first day of school. Anyone who expected it to all go according to plan to just has unrealistic expectations. It not like anyone actually got hurt or lost, right?"

Slumping back in his chair he rolls his eyes in exasperation to cover a flinch as that last bit was a slip of the tongue.
Apr 4, 2026 6:26 am
"That is a very mature view Kyle." Veritas nodded approvingly. "I trust you if you do see others who are anxious, you will also help to assure them that everything is well. Will you do that Kyle?" The question was rhetorical as Veritas brought the session to a close. And still, Nixon said nothing throughout.
OOC:
Spending that 1 Willpower is sufficient for Kyle's cover up and also fixes the failed roll from earlier. Time to retreat out of here!

Kyle is shifting to an artificer theme along the lines of Son's if Ether. His foci will suck to physical tools and a blend of creative imagination and algorithms possibly channeled through diagrams and equations

Are one shot or limited use items, like potions out talisman that can be created without costing character points, a thing in Mage?

Coming back to this, not too late. Yes crafting or creating Wonders is a thing in this game. Most of them are pretty high level though, check out p508's table on Crafting Wonders, except for Trinkets, which can be made with Prime 2 (which infuses the magic) + relevant Sphere (which specifies the effect). Trinkets are one-shot items.

Another way of possessing magic items is to have the Wonder background, this costs points. But the item is permanent, and yours.

OOC:
I am thinking Kyle will approach magic from the path of a artificer and have more prepared magic tools than spontaneous powers. Whether this is through Trinkets, Wonders, or a variety of Foci will be something that moves with the story.
Kyle's main focus now is to blend in with the crowd and stay off the radar of whatever is "watching" and "feeding" off of thing as well as any authoritarian people who look to be area of the issues but pushing the mass concurrences or seems too interested in Kyle of the other kids. It is not that he thinks people are after them but it is clear to him there is an "official story" and things are being kept hidden that Kyle wants to understand before making any decisions.

OOC:
Kyle is curious about the school and apparent density of "Awoken"(?) individuals/entities. However the thing feeding off the area is freaking him out. He has a couple of priorities and top on them is to not be fed on or get the attention of the feeder or anything else with more power than himself. It seems that though it is clear other awoken have some power they are not omniscient so Kyle want to stay below their radar and is thinking of ways to practice and use his new powers without drawing direct attention to himself.

Would Kyle need points in Correspondence to be able to trigger remote magic via drones or other gadgets acting as foci or trinkets?
I am thinking of something like small cheap kits, mounted to drones or placed in fixed points, used to create his own wireless network, hidden in the jumble of nets already on campus, that he can then use as a conduit to remote monitor or trigger effect near one of his tools.

Kyle will begin tinkering in an attempt to better understand his abilities as well as how well he can sense technology and/or information manipulation with code vs with magick. Using scraps in his shop he starts working on something to help deliver the upload as quietly and stealthily as possible if he has time. (either a trinket of just a prepared magic effect to be triggered later)

He makes sure to get home before uncle Ryan with enough time to each and then meet up with the others at Myra's

OOC:
Before I reply to Kyle's tinkering in his Sanctum, please see the main thread. There's one more thing Kyle might discover, since he's been on the alert all this while and wary of who's watching them. Go ahead and reply there first, only when we're done there will we come back here for the solo.
May 27, 2026 1:10 pm
Kyle gets as much work done as he can, attempting a few experiments mixing magic with technology to bypass computer or phone restrictions to upload the images as he promised. he doesn't want to stay to lake and would love to go to meet up with the others but will have to head home before that to check in with his uncle. He has no idea how long the others plan to meet so will just get as much done as possible and give them a call after getting dinner at home.

Kyle prepared whatever he could. Doing so in his hideaway did ensure the privacy of what he was attempting; if he had worked in school, or plugged into the wifi network at home, he would have to work so much harder to scrub anything that could be traced back to me. His preparations on what Jonathan gave him were reasonably complete. All that was needed was to turn up in school tomorrow and deploy his upload to the few more vulnerable social media accounts he found and tweak the algorithms so that their social feeds rose to the top of the searches amongst friends. That'll be sure to incite the buzz that Jonathan was thinking of.
Night was beginning to fall, and thanks to his newfound awareness he did feel as if the woods were not as innocent as he used to think they were, before his awakening. Dinner was waiting for him at home, uncle Ryan was as responsible and as caring a surrogate parent as Kyle could ask for, and Kyle had never given him cause to worry about anything. Kyle had discovered a number of things today: how the counselling centre disrupted his own phone scans of the place, how there were others in school which abilities, such as Zane, not just the immediate group he spoke with, and how the inexplicable 'darkness' of the some part of the school network was still a mystery to be solved. Most immediately, he discovered how someone had come close enough to detect his sanctum, someone whom Kyle could trace as 'magical', who had either entered school or left school, passing by his hideout.
These last thoughts remained in his mind as he cycled home. He wondered if he could, in his tinkering about with robotics, whether he could invent things to help him detect other such phenomena. Amusingly, even as he thought this, Glitch seemed to signal to him its approval, as if it were encouraging Kyle to make more stuff just like how Glitch was invented.
OOC:
Just confirming Kyle in his Sanctum, finishing up on all the successes you rolled earlier. No Santcum breach by the unknown passerby, but Kyle feels that the passerby knows it's a Sanctum. Am also remembering your mentioning how to do crafting. I've seeded some possibilties for Kyle, but there can be other things to investigate, depending on which other directions the group takes.
May 30, 2026 10:05 pm
OOC:
To be clear, Kyle believes someone came this way and spotted his Sanctum before he arrived after school?
Well, I guess that's the price of convenience, increased traffic and chances of exposure. Now how to fix that? . . . .
You mentioned that his sanctum had limited space. Perhaps the cavern below the outbuilding is the sanctum and the upper rooms are just a facade. He can do robotics work there but any real magical shielding/cloaking is focuses around the basement which would hide any magical tinkering
The idea of recording, and possibly identifying and tacking, a persons aura seems like something Kyle really need to get into. Of course he also need to find a way to either increase his security and/or secrecy for the out building. That will take some thinking.

Not wanting to get into trouble with his uncle, Kyle cleans up and locks up. Racing home on his bike, with Glitch latched onto the top of his pack, Kyle wondered if ti was too late to join the others. It was getting dark and he doubted that uncle Ryan would want to take him someplace. But if it was to socialize it might be possible. Ryan was always trying to get him to do more stuff with other teens.

As he bikes he ponders the equipment me might need for the aura recorder/detector/tracker. He starts rambling ideas out loud and listening to Glitch's responses. He got in this habit over the summer and though Glitch does not speak (other than the occasional sound byte played back at the most inopportune or hilarious times), Kyle swears the drone is communicating and somehow he understands most of what it 'says'

Myra's invitation to her place was still open. All Kyle needed to do was to let his uncle know where he was going and what time he might be back. Uncle Ryan certainly did think that Kyle should 'get out more often', and not spend all day glued to his computer or his engineering tinkering. This was why Kyle kept most of his science experiments away from home; it wouldn't do to start filling up the garage which all the bits and bobs and his equipment. Which was why his little hideaway was perfect for the times where he didn't want to be constrained by the school labs or the tech workshop. He was proud of the little stash he had put together here, and it puzzled him how come someone finally managed to notice it, for it had remained largely ignored for all the time he had been using it. But whomever did didn't seem to be curious enough to intrude further; they didn't trepass or vandalise or break in.
OOC:
Yes that's correct. Kyle detected someone's traffic that took them near enough to the Sanctum, but they didn't do anything to it. I'l also hint that this is not a regular occurrence, but a one-off. There's no path or anything that is being used by people coming and going. You Have Sanctum 2, which means it has an Arcane rating of 2 which hides the magic. Ratings can go up to 5. I guess I'm hinting at the fact that the person who spotted it managed to see past a -2 modifier that's all.
Rules-wise, a Sanctum is the size of a room, max 500 sqft but typically smaller. (Examples include a yoga loft, sacred grove, basement den, photograhy studio, classroom lab, tiny shrine, small bookstore, etc) You can have a tiny cavern if you prefer rather than a tiny building, same small size, like a hole leading to a small cave (home to raccoons? bats?). In terms of eco-system I'm thinking it's unlikely that there's a small house in the woods so near school and that the house hides a cavern complex underneath it for all these years.
Did you want to follow up with a visit to Myra's? If you want, drop a post in the Myra thread, maybe a message, then followed by Kyle actually reaching there?
Jun 2, 2026 3:49 am
OOC:
I imagine the building is more of a shed than a house. Perhaps it was originally used to store tools or a vehicle. Maybe part of the school historically and used by woodsmen or groundskeepers but since then fallen to disuse. Or part of another structure, like a home deep in the woods that fell to fire or the like so access to the shed faded in the decades since resulting in the current 'trail'. Since it is so small the building would not be part of the sanctuary. Not a big deal just an idea.
Before it gets even darker Kyle quickly heads home, working up another sweat. He definitely needed a shower. While waiting at a light close to home he sends a quick message to Myra to see if the invite is still good.

Getting a response from Myra Kyle sends a quick text to Ryan
Heading home
Invited to a friends house
Can I get a lift?

Upon reaching home, Kyle called out to his uncle he was home, dashed into his room, grabbed a new set of cloths, and bolted into the bathroom for a quick shower. Not bothering to let the water get warm the cold shower helped cool Kyle off and in a minute he was toweling off then getting dressed.

Uncle Ryan's voice through the door startled Kyle. "Hey, what's with the last minute heads up? I don't mind giving you a lift but an earlier heads up would have been nice."

Kyle Called back as he pulled on his pants before unlocking the door, not bothering to open it, leaving that to Ryan. "Sorry. I got held up working on a project and didn't realize how late it is. So can we go? " Finishing pulling on his clothes he opened the door to look at his uncle.

That's what I imagined the building to be as well. Your rationale is perfect! It's an old campus, the core structure, Founder's Hall is over a hundred years old. Campus premises would've run into the woods, with groundskeepers, outbuildings such as sheds and even quarters, now cleared or disused. The school fence is surely a more modern addition. So it's a lucky find for Kyle, to have discovered a hideaway to do his thing. Great idea!

FYI : Reading up on mage lore I came across the Syndicate. I had known about them in some sense, mostly their enforcers the hollow men, but there are some points of the syndicate ideology that seem interesting to Kyle. Namely "Primal Utility" and their view on the un-awoken masses. However, rather than investing/manipulating the masses Kyle likes the idea of self investment and accumulating power through preparation and effort. Many of the concepts might cross apply and any Syndicate agent might be able to work on Kyles sympathies to the masses and/or the ideology of investment.

While I still feel Kyle will likely end up along the path of Sons of Ethos, or similar, I would like to also incorporate aspects of Primal Utility in his magical manipulation/preparation. Would this be ok?

OOC:
Plot-wise, our young mage Kyle could possibly lean towards the Syndicate or Sons of Ether, as the opportunities arise. I merely directed everyone to the traditional Traditions first, because that's probably what happens first, but if Kyle learns other things along the way, such as if he learns more about the powers of the Technocracy, you could choose for him to head that way.
Primal Utility is the Technocracy's reality of the Prime Sphere. It deals with hypereconomics, ie the essence of magic is about who controls the resources controls the power. Perhaps Kyle could start by learning about maths or economics in his courses. At this point, I'd say that Kyle has zero understanding of Primal Utility. (Rules-wise, that's a different Sphere, you'll need to get xp to learn that Sphere etc)
