Beneath the crimson sun of Athas, there is no mercy.

The wind does not whisper — it scours. The sand does not drift — it devours. Even the light burns like a brand upon the flesh. This is a world where oceans are memories, where forests are myths told to children who will never see green, and where survival is the only virtue that matters.

You were born into this world of dust and bone.

On Athas, steel is rare, water is priceless, and life is fragile. Sorcerer-kings rule from their city-states, drawing power from a dying world. Arcane magic is feared and hated — for good reason. The defilers steal life from the soil itself, leaving ash and barren earth behind. Even preservers, who strive to cast without destruction, are mistrusted. Magic has nearly killed this world once before.

But there is another power. It lives in the mind.

Psionics are as common on Athas as thirst. Every child learns to shield their thoughts before they learn to read. In the wastes, a keen mind is sharper than any blade. Where magic scars the land, psionic power flows clean — born of discipline, will, and inner strength. It cannot be stolen from the soil. It cannot wither a field. It is the one power that does not betray Athas simply by being used.

And so your have chosen this path.

You have been taken in or sought out masters to teach you the way of the mind. As disciples of wandering mystics. Each of you has completed you initial training beneath the watchful eye of a mentor. Leaving the lands you know, you follow you master who has set out for a mysterious destination.

Already the journey tests you. Water must be measured in mouthfuls. The sun punishes hesitation. Insects burrow beneath the skin. Silt storms rise without warning. At night, the heat vanishes and cold replaces it like a blade at your throat. You sleep lightly, if at all, sensing the minds of your companions as faint flickers in the dark.

The desert does not care about your potential.
Athas does not reward the hopeful.
And the Way does not grant power to the weak.

Ahead, jagged stone breaks the horizon — black against the burning sky.

The Trial awaits.
This game is intended to help with the design and play test of a revision of the Mystic class based on the D&D 5e (2014) Mystic v3 pdf : https://media.wizards.com/2017/dnd/downloads/UAMystic3.pdf.

Players are asked review content and provide feedback and suggestions on the proposed content. Actual game play will commence after a week of design feedback and adjustment. Characters will be created during this time and posting will be at just once or twice a week. After the design feedback stake is complete the game will commence and posting pace will increase.

I got into psionics way back when they were introduced in v2. And ever since I have never had a DM that liked letting them in the campaign. Even when they got fully fleshed out to a full and proper class in 3.5. So when I saw that 5e had attempted it again, labeling them Mystics, but it has yet to get past UA I convinced a DM to let me play one.

Now I am reworking it and plan to run a Mystic only campaign to test out the design. At this time I think getting some feedback on the design work would help streamline and balance it before we playtest. With or without help I estimate another month before I am ready to playtest.

PHASE 1 : DONE
I am looking for anyone willing to read stuff and give constructive feed back. I plan to do most of the work but welcome content addition and revisions. Primarily I am looking for people to read and comment, focusing on power balance as well as keeping to a class identity.

Mystic fist in dark sun 5e 2024 was one if the most fun times I had in the system

I gave the UA Mystic class a pretty thorough workout about two years back when I ran a Dark Sun campaign and wanted a 5e version of psionics. I can totally give my two cents worth on what worked and what didn't. I remember: you might want to redistribute the powers across the disciplines, some options are way more viable than others. Some sub-classes are also significantly more powerful than others. The class is front loaded, lots happening early. You can alpha strike a number of powers early as well, so damage could be swingy. And while it won't matter if you're running a Mystic only game, if you intend to play with other classes, the Mystic is generally ahead in the power curve at the early to mid levels. It's also very easy to make a jack-of-all-trades build with abilities that different classes have, that can be a good or bad thing depending.

DS would be a great setting for the play test but I will need to look into it as I have never had the chance to play that setting, I only had 1 friend that even knew what it was, and that was back in 3.5 days. It seemed interesting and I liked how it had the magic has consequences aspect.

I heard that WoC may try another rev of the Mystic for 2024 but other than another UA version have yet to see more actual content.

Some basic of the revision I am working to
+ Psionics are not magic but they are a known, if rare, factor so there should be defined interactions (anti-magic stops psionics due to interfering with all non-mundane powers, dispel magic requires ability check to maintain control over the energies involved, etc)
+ Keep PSI points but implement a system to prevent spamming 50+ 1st level abilities (Sorcerers can do something similar if they bother so the idea of a point pool is not breaking anything)
+ Try to ensure the Mystic is a distinct class and not one that mimics aspects of all the others
+ Pull from ideas from 2.0, 3.0/5 on how to structure the powers (Orders <= Sciences)

Consider the following:

Based on the 3.5e warlock
Robust, powerful, and self limiting

The most mechanically balanced class ever made

5e or new 2024 PHB rules?

Thanks for the suggestion. I will take a look at the suggestion. Looks to be a pathfinder telekinetic / wu-jen hybrid

I started a mystics-only campaign years ago, using v3 of the UA playtest. It didn't get very far, as games are sometimes wont to do, but it was enough to convince me that the class has enough flexibility and diversity to maintain a whole campaign on its own.

I have never been involved in a game with the use of psionics because I don't think the dm we had back in the day really grasped it. I would be interested in playing a mystic but don't know much about it. I have a 2e and a 3.5e handbook to read up on it.

You might already know that WotC released a new Mystic Unearthed Arcana, which provides a Psionic subclass to the Monk, Paladin, Rogue, and Warlock classes.

Treantmonk, a creator who is renowned for a sharp eye toward 5e mechanics, recently (Jan 19) reviewed the Mystic Monk class and thought it was fantastic. He is planning on reviewing the rest.

Maybe this new take on psionics might inspire ideas for your design.

A straight Mystic game does sound more promising than one mixed. Not sure how the balance between powers will show up. I like to give this a try and see. I have played some with Psionics and believe Psybermagi is right that most GM do avoid the psionic mix in games. I'm fairly sure that I'm guilty of that too. Even in previous editions as well.

I haven't fathomed a thought of a character since the setting, and such really haven't been mentioned nor races & level.

I have your download. "https://media.wizards.com/2017/dnd/downloads/UAMystic3.pdf"

I will send out invites at the end of this week (1/31) though I am not sure who in interested in helping out and/or playing vs just commenting and providing initial feedback. We'll see once I get things organized and the invites sent out. Please note that this is a 2 phase project
1 : Design review and update : this will be a weekly process and go through 2-4 cycles before play test begins. This phase will be open to any and all.
2 : Playtest will be of a group of psionic class characters to test them out for additional feedback

I will likely make phase 1 open to as many as are interested but phase 2 will have to be limited to 3-6 players, with priority given to this who posted here first, if they intend to play and stay involved in phase 1
A pool was added at the top of this thread for players to indicate interest in helping and/or playing. Even if you are not interested in the long term I appreciate any ideas or suggestions.

I can work with that. Of course if the other players take you out then you will have to resume play as the BBEG's boss for round 2. :)

Honestly I have only had players take on such actions for a single scene but am open to the possibility of a player acting as 'assistant dm' driving some NPC while I drive the story. Any previous experience with such situations would be appreciated.

Sending out invitations for phase 1, class design discussion/feedback, to those who indicated interest in the poll I added at the top of this thread. The game is still private this week as I am still getting things organized. If you are interested in participating then vote on the poll above or PM me.

I welcome any constructive feedback and will open up the game for public viewing next week. I am focusing on class this week, orders (sub-class) next week, and disciplines(powers) the two weeks after that. Actual game play will happen after that.

The actual game play will use milepost and level fast. It will start with level 1 for a short "session 0" using dark sun races (details will be given in game, or just search online). Then skip to level 3 for a adventure. After each story ark we would skip to higher tiers as I deem appropriate, to get a better overall sense of the revised class.

This game is now open for applications . I am looking for 2 to 4 individuals familiar with D&D 5e and willing to work with me as things progress. Class abilities may need to be adjusted if play proves powers to be OP, hard to fit into standard play, or under powered.
