A hero can perform each reaction no
more than 1/round, @runekyndig, so you used Lay on Hands.

DM, question. I'm not sure how to interpret "Sneak Attack". A plain reading of the rules implies every time a cheat crits is sneak attack. Compare with "Vicious Opportunist" which requires a distracted target. But that's not really sneaky, is it? Unless it's because the cheat knows enough anatomy to really twist the knife as it were? Doesn't matter here, 1) since I missed it last round and 2) G5 is already dead, but for future reference, please.

OOC:
Good question, and you’re reading the rules correctly 👍

In Nimble RPG, Sneak Attack is not about stealth, hiding, or catching someone unaware in the narrative sense. It’s a mechanical expression of the Cheat doing what they do best: fighting dirty, exploiting openings, and twisting the knife when luck breaks their way.

Once per turn, when a Cheat scores a critical hit, they automatically deal extra damage. At Alex’s current level, that’s +1d6 damage. No additional conditions required.

That’s also why Vicious Opportunist exists separately: that ability represents deliberately exploiting a distracted or pressured foe, whereas Sneak Attack represents pure, unfair efficiency when fortune smiles.

And... you absolutely can combine the two! Vicious Opportunist can force a critical hit when its condition is met (a distracted / vulnerable target). Which means it triggers Sneak Attack as well (still limited to once per turn).

OOC:
As even the "fastest" way for Alex to recover HP, catching his breath, would take ten turns, Alex isn't going to do much self-healing unless he survives this encounter. However, even from behind the wagon, I am within 12 squares of the two remaining goblins, and since I am hidden, I have advantage. I cannot take advantage of Vicious Opportunist since this will be a ranged attack. I will assess the situation to create an opening and then attack. Given the circumstances, I think the appropriate skill is Perception, which I will roll below. DM, of course, please feel free to override, roll yourself, and edit my post as needed.

Also, @kwll, thank you for the Heart's Fire. That extra action may literally have saved Alex's life. Well, at least for the moment!
Alexander Simonnet Natalis de Bertier du Puy, pride of family Bertier, scion of the du Puys, realized he has had better days in his young life. Lying against the wagon, gasping in pain, was not how he envisioned this little walk to Phandalin. Well, as grandpappy Bertier used to say, if regrets were pixies, dust of disappearance would be a copper a pound. For the moment, though, he seems to have faded from the interest of the vicious, green humanoids. Keeping what little pressure he could on the bleeding wound, Alex rolled to his left and tried to see just how desperate was Nelly's predicament. She was engaged in melee with a goblin flashing multiple daggers, dancing back and forth trying to evade the slashes. The other goblin was watching for an opportunity to skewer Nelly with arrows, just as Alex was himself. She cannot hold out on her own much longer, and Igrem may be out of magic-juice. I have to do something!

Praying to Tymora that his luck continues to hold, Alex watches for a moment where the bow-wielding goblin's head was just ever so slightly more exposed [Action 1: Create an Opening]. Unfortunately, between the angle of the hill, the intervening combatants Nelly and goblin, and Alex's grievous wounds, that second goblin didn't come into clear enough focus to provide any advantage. Whispering a prayer, Alex ascends to his knees and whips a shot off against the goblin (G2) [Action 2: Attack G2].
OOC:
Critical hit, Sneak Attack AND the sling's innate vicious property, YES!
The Mistress of Good Fortune clearly heard her devoted servant as Alex watched the sling stone impact directly on the goblin's fleshy eyeball. Sighing in contentment and with a whispered prayer of thanks, Alex crouches behind the wagon once again, getting out of sight [Action 3: Hide in Combat - Full cover - no roll].

There is a wet crack as Alex’s stone punches straight through the goblin’s eye, snapping its head back violently. The creature screams — a lot.

Meanwhile, Nelly kills the other goblin with her glowing mace.

@kwll, I will defer to our GM, but if I am reading the rules correctly (pp. 13–14 Core Rulebook), a reaction comes out of the action pool of your next turn. Saving an action on your turn simply wastes it.

The remaining goblins take one look at the fallen bodies—the scorched corpse on the embankment, the broken form at the trail’s edge—and their nerve shatters. G2 snarls once in fury and fear, then turns and flees. The last injured goblin in the northern embankment (G6) follows suit, clutching its wounds as it scrambles into the brush, disappearing into the trees with panicked cries.

Within seconds, its over.

Hearing the sweet, sweet sounds of fleeing goblins, Alex peeks out from behind the wagon. In a strained and pained voice, he calls out to Igrem, the person closest to him, "Blessed be Tyche's Fair-Tressed Daughter, they seem to have fled. Where's Nelly? I need to take a breather. Did those monsters have anything worthwhile on them at least?"

At that, Alex collapses, half-conscious to the ground. We aren't making camp HERE, he thinks morosely, so spends the next ten minutes focusing on bandaging his wounds and keeping his innards where they belong [Catch Breath] hoping that Nelly and Igrem do the same if needed, loot the goblins if not, and get a basic idea of where they are headed.

Nelly, once you’re certain that no goblins are circling back and no arrows are waiting to fly, you allow yourself a moment to breathe before turning your attention to the scene around you.

It doesn’t take long to realize the goblins have been using this place to stage ambushes for some time.

The ground is scarred with old scuffs and trampled brush, and faint drag marks cut across the dirt—too deliberate to be coincidence. On the north side of the road, partly concealed behind dense thickets, you spot a narrow trail leading northwest. Although you're not a Hunter, the signs are clear even to you: at least a dozen goblins have passed back and forth along it repeatedly. More unsettling still are the marks of two human-sized bodies dragged away from the dead horses at some earlier time.

You can also identify the horses as belonging to Gundren Rockseeker and Sildar Hallwinter. The horses have been dead for about a day, and the saddlebags have been looted.

Searching the fallen goblins turns up exactly what you’d expect—and probably nothing you would want:
- 2 wicked daggers (1d4+DEX, Melee, Piercing, Light, Thrown 4, sells for 1 gp each)
- 3 shortbows, with quivers and plenty of black arrows (1d6+DEX, Ranged, Piercing, 2-handed, Range 12, sells for 12 gp each)
- Moldy bread (technically food; it may disagree and fight back. Can't be sold).
- Broken human and dwarven teeth, forcibly removed. (Assorted and unsettling dental trophies. Can't be sold)
- Slug Farm (Jar of slimy, wriggling slugs. Can't be sold)
- An empty leather map case (sells for 1 gp)
- Small, cheap, and smelly hides (They smell of rot. Can be sold for 2 gp if cleaned and you succeed on an Influence check after arriving in Phandalin. Inconvenient until then).

Alex, Nelly, Igrem, what do you do?
Jan 28, 2026 8:16 pm
OOC:
Actuary in real life, so statistical nerdfest interjection here. Mathematically, the shortbow is still better than the sling, even with the Vicious property. Exploding criticals in the sling become a geometric series with r = 1/4. The expected value of 1d4 is 2.5. So for the sling we get in the limit 2.5 * 4 /3 and now add in the 0.25 * 2.5 from the Vicious property and the overall expected value is 95 / 24 or 3.9583333... The shortbow with exploding criticals is a geometric series with r = 1/6. The expected value of a d6 is 3.5, so the long-term expected value of the shortbow is 6 / 5 * 3.5 or 4.2. So Alex, genius mathematical savant that he is, would like a shortbow.

Alex, the cheat-wannabe-jongleur is probably interested in the daggers, though.

Alex's player is gonna have to think on this one :):):)

I think you forgot to add the expected value of your Sneak Attack (3.5) to your first critical hit with each weapon. I can't figure out how to do that calculation, though. =)

OOC:
You are correct! That would be a 25% chance of 1d6 for sling but only a 16 2/3% chance of a d6 for the Shortbow. The sling crits 50% more often than the bow. So sling goes to 95 / 24 + 0.25 * 3.5 = 95 / 24 + 21 / 24 = 116 / 24 = 4.83333. Shortbow now goes to 4.2 + 3.5 / 6 = 4.783333. The math has changed! Thank you, boss!!!

@runekyndig,@kwll for that matter, we never decided on a loot apportioning method. Do we want to split by value, by item and have an honor system if it is lopsided, RP everything?
