Spritelings Chapter 01

The beetle gets to work. They size up a nearby tree (carefully avoiding the important-looking biggest tree), then give it a slight push, testing the tree's stability and weight.

"Um... I'm gonna push a tree down now! It might be loud!"

The beetle waits a respectable moment for their fellow spritelings to brace. Then they back up from the tree, take a breath, and charge. The beetle impacts against the tree...
OOC:
Shall I roll? If so, how many die, and what's the opposition?

A tree tall enough that it would reach across the river if thrown across can indeed be found. You imagine it'd weigh almost a tonne, which you probably can handle moving to the shore if not in a hurry. The bigger problem is that a tree big enough to safely serve as a bridge - about a foot in diameter - it's not entirely unstable, having roots that have neither fully burned nor rotted. You'd need to either chew through it near the ground and eventually fell it, or dig it up with the roots (either completely, or chew off the roots).

Once that is done, you'd need to get rid of the branches that get in the way of transportation and movement, and drag it to the destination.

With that in mind, do you do it?
OOC:
No need to roll, though you can activate Gentle Giant to speed up the process if you want (Trivial show off). The more straightforward approach of gnawing and felling it would probably take you around 5-6 minutes, and about twice as much for getting rid of extraneous branches and roots, and then about as much to get the tree to the shore and position it correctly across the river. So . . . about 20, at most 30 minutes for everything.

Edit: Upon some discussion, it became clear that it would be reasonable for Walk Like a Mammoth to warrant a stronger bridge - either three trees instead of one, or two trees and some reinforcement with webbing, or significantly more webwork.

The snake returns during this "That one looks long enough for the river. If you and..." turning to Mara "Did you refer to yourself as Mara?" back to Bull "Could knock a few of these down do you think it would be wide enough for you?"

She will turn to Smaugalir "I'm not familiar with construction and like me you look to be of less sturdy construction, but perhaps we can help trim the fallen trees while others uproot them or handle the binding together?"
Dec 9, 2025 9:04 pm
Looking at their fore-arms thoughtfully, Smaugalir nods.

"They are made for delicate work, but I think the thinner branches at the the top should be doable with them. As for the thicker branches, I'm not sure."

The beetle will! They gnaw the roots free, no matter how long it takes. Hopefully, by the time everyone's done cutting away the branches, the tree will be fully loose and ready to position. Then the beetle moves into the next tree, and if required, the tree after that.
OOC:
I'll avoid spending drama charge for now.
Dec 12, 2025 3:05 pm
"Yep! I'm Mara," says the marten to the snake, "what should I call you?"

Mara finishes tying off the webs of the spider's tapestry just in time for the beetle to start uprooting a tree. They could start trimming the branches now, but they've already fallen out of one tree today. Mara's efforts are probably best spent moving the first log toward the river while the beetle works on the next one.

"I don't seem to recall a name, so I'll leave that up to you"
Dec 12, 2025 4:26 pm
Being asked to name a spriteling is probably a great honor, and a responsibility that should be treated with seriousness and respect. So it's a shame Mara has all the cultural background and social graces of a rock.

"Huh, weird. Well I hope it comes back to you. Until then I'm gonna call you... Snakey"
Dec 12, 2025 8:48 pm
Names. Useful.

Nemma stores these new names away. Big stupid is Mara. Lots of talk is Snakey. Big shaky shadow has not said name. Smarter than they look? Hiding? Singing one also no name. Danger???

However, Nemma's danger sense picks up nothing from the others, other than an aura of recklessnes from the Mara. Not active danger, but big ones can afford to be careless. Fast and strong enough not to notice what gets crushed.

She continues her webwork, although now a strange new pattern has emerged. If a human were to pass by, perhaps with a magnifying glass, they might be able to read "Snakeymaranemmasnakeymaranemmasnakeymaranemma" over and over again, woven into the fabric of the web.

As the tree lies tere calmly, the insectoid spiritling mount it and begins to chop the thinner branches away, neatly, almost flat to the trunk. While working, there is a rhythmic sound emanating in concert with the movements, but it's difficult to discern if the sounds emanates because of their work or the work follows the rhythm of the sound. Either way, the cutting work progresses quickly and methodically.
OOC:
Perhaps one of the usage for the 'Heroic tune'? Here a shanty-like version? ;-)
Dec 12, 2025 11:03 pm
About an hour* of joint effort later, the bridge - made of two logs reinforced by webs - looks sturdy enough even for Bull to cross without worrying about its structural integrity.

The water running below is quick, judging by the sound, and by the shards of ice passing under the bridge.

The opposite shore is slightly steeper, especially further inland, and there is a sign that unlike on the triangular island, snowdrop flowers are more eager to bloom, showing some patches of green where snow has receded.
OOC:
* An hour of effort assumes Bull and Nemma as main contributors. It's possible to reduce this further by either assistance (though compared to those two, total crafting or brawn ratings of less than 7 will be very modest), or by enhancing those two's ratings supernaturally.

Do clarify which of the shores you're going to - presumably either northwest or southwest, as good crossing points towards those are close by to the starting location?

"I hope this doesn't attract too much attention to the Elder Mushroom Ring Island, but I imagine that we'll want to be able to get back"
OOC:
I vote for northwest
Dec 13, 2025 5:43 pm
The beetle likes the pretty snow flowers. Flowers are colorful plants. And colorful plants means nearby food! Usually. Maybe.

"Maybe attention is good? We can meet new friends! If there are friends out there? Maybe..." The beetle shudders, thinking of all the bad things that could be out there "U-um, maybe not..."

The beetle hesitates, looking around at their fellows for someone else to take the lead.
OOC:
Northwest shore vote as well.
Dec 13, 2025 7:13 pm
"I certainly hope so, we just also have to keep in mind those 'calamities'. Should we split up to look for supplies and meet back up here later or does someone have advice first?"
Dec 13, 2025 8:22 pm
"We are very different, probably the reason the Elder Ring summoned us. So, we shouldn't split up as we don't know which calamities do us await and how fast they are.

So, if you like to go one direction, we all should do it, granting our strengths to the others and helping with their weaknesses, too."
OOC:
northwest is fine with me, too

Mara doesn't need any convincing to head towards the mountains.

"I think we should get moving. Don't worry, Snakey, I bet there's plenty of forage along the way."
OOC:
Northwest is fine. Also, what are the dietary requirements of a spriteling anyway?
Dec 13, 2025 10:30 pm
The way towards the mountains continues gently uphill, with the smaller hills preceding the steep mountains.

The biome seems to be such that it could provide opportunities to gather roots and mushrooms. Water shouldn't be an issue at this moment in time, with enough snow left form melting, and the occasional spring or puddle even away from the river.
OOC:

Assume a spriteling is omnivorous unless you want life to be more complicated (in which case you'd be getting Drama Charge from the extra hassle). In terms of amount, a typical spriteling eats three meals a day comparable to how much a humanoid would. Except for Bull, who will often need 2.5 times as much, but gain Drama Charge when that causes problems.

On average, an hour of effort of foraging or hunting in the wilderness provides one standard meal, with Survival improving yield as per the decibel scale. This doesn't mean it always takes one hour per hunt, but there's not much point in diving into fine details (beyond the initial narration) and randomising yields from time to time. Note that this food is not particularly well-preserved, and much of it will be unsuitable for hoarding for more than a couple of days.

Travel speed through 'normal' wilderness for a spriteling is about four thousand yards per hour, adjusted by Travel as per the dB scale. So, for example, Bull can comfortably accelerate to a cruising speed of ten thousand yards per hour over normal terrain (or even 25 by Activating Group Steed); this may be reduced for bad terrain though.

It would probably be best to decide on a more specific course/direction/destination - either by azimuth, or by using an image. (Note the site supports automated/integrated pasting of images to imgur, but given the latest mess with imgur, using that function may silently fail depending on your IP address' region.)
With the introduction scene over, everyone gains 15 Drama Charge as previously discussed. It's probably more than the scene impact would indicate, but I said it will be around 15 so I'm handing out 15. Of course further dialogues and other RP are welcome as always.

The beetle's stomach grumbles. Instinct tells them to dig up something tasty, though they're not sure where would be good to dig. They settle for occasionally stopping to dig wherever there's trees, hoping to find tasty roots.

"Well, I am eager to see what we find out there. We could go north in the direction of that tall mountain, but I suggest that instead we follow the banks of this river and then the stream that connects to it that leads into the hills. Unfortunately some of us cross terrain faster than others, so we may be limited to the speed of our slowest member"

OOC:
Lol no points in travel
Nemma waves at big shaky shadow. Ride? Seems to like food. Trade? Trade for bug-catch meal? She pounces on a mealworm, stunning it before offering to the big shadow. Mealworms are good crunch, very nutritious, some of the best food.
