Spritelings Chapter 01

The birds look southwards. Thistle takes a step towards 'Lily' and the mighty beetle. "Ah, Triangle Island, the place of the ancient great fire. I am familiar with it from whispers exchanged between elders when I was young. Are the embers reigniting? Or was some other calamity foreseen there by your 'leader'?"

Mara's been quiet while "Lily" does the introductions, the translations are helpful but it's still hard to listen to so much Beak.

Apparently Lily's worried about sharing the location of the Elder Mushroom ring now? Who knows why, most of it's probably too deep underground for these Kiwis to get at even with their spears. Not that it seems like they'd try anyway, isn't the vulture-calamity their enemy too?

There must be at least some game higher up in the mountains if the vultures and shrikes can hunt, but it would be still be a good idea for the party to get their hands on some bags in order to stock up on the plentiful food by the river. And a spear would be nice. Another word pops into Mara's head too - salt!

"Just tell them we'll kill that vulture in exchange for a few day's supplies. Isn't that our job anyway?"

Lily interrupts their discussion to give a nod of acknowledgement at Mara and then looks at Nemma and Bigs wondering about their take
"On the contrary, we're lead by a sage of that land, so no need for our group to move to another land permanently"

"Huh, someone still lives there. That's odd. Then again, one of your companions seems to be a talking if not fluent mammal, so that's very odd too. Would be curious how that happened."

The birds seem to have grown distracted from the initial line of questioning.

"So you want to learn about the surroundings. Follow me to the map tent," says Winter Sun, and goes towards one of the tents on the southern edge of the campsite.
OOC:
Up to you whether to follow or not, of course, but some of the things below will not be harder to witness if you don't.
Those who come closer to the campsite can spot that not all birds came to watch the strangers. A couple seem more interested in tailoring something out of a hide and moulding an earthenware bowl respectively. Also, between all the tents, in the very middle of the campsite, you spot an extinguished campfire surrounded by stones.

Winter Sun approaches one of the tents and pulls off the entrance curtain. The entryway itself is decorated by small animal bones hanging tied to strings, as well as by freshly gathered snowdrop flowers plugged into straps of hide.

The interior of the tent seems lower than the surrounding ground, and the floor at the entrance is sloped downward, thus making the room look larger than the tent size would indicate.

Near the middle of the room, there are two areas warded off by rows of stones, and filled with what seems to be clay or mud. One of the two such clay boards has a drawing of what looks like a depiction of relative positioning of the river, woods, Triangle Island, and so on. The other is a clean slate. There are also some tools lying nearby - an earthenware jug, a medium-sized bone that you suspect might be a goat scapula, a few small sticks and bones and stones with sharpened ends, a narrow strip of hide with notches.

"Let us discuss what news there are of our surroundings and territories, exchanging tales of what we explored."

"Unfortunately we visited you first, so we doubt we have any tales that would be new to you."

"Aww, I was hoping to learn more of the current situation around Triangle Island.

Still, I will tell you of these places. Up north, in the rocky mountains, there used to large areas for harvest and hunt. Mountain goats would graze there, but plants were still plentiful. Nowadays not so much, now this line marks the places where we are less confident in our territory, and this further north where shrikes roam. In there, closer to the river, the hunting vulture was spotted more often back when we used to go there, but we are unsure of its whereabouts nowadays.

We are unsure what is on the northeastern side of the river - exploring there was not worth the effort. The line in the west-southwest direction marks where the swamps of the toads begin. We don't go there. Legend has it that long ago during or before the great ancient fire, the toads would not claim all of the swamplands, but rather go further southwest from the valley around the triangle island, which is why the toad line does not approach the island closely. Not sure if it's still like that. None of the elders specified at the time, but later some thought maybe it's because of where the fire happened.

On the eastern side of the river, in the north shrikes have began pushing south from the mountains into the plains, but plains are not as rich as the hills so this was a lesser concern. Far on the eastern side of the river, the forest marks the beginning of bug lands. They don't claim the parts of the forest hit by the fire, I think.

But surely you, emissaries, know at least something of the ancient fire's lands, having come from there?"

Bigs knows. Bigs knows the elder mushrooms, the dying island, the big tree. Why isn't Snakey telling them? Should Bigs tell them? Would Snakey get mad?

"Um..."

Bigs hesitates. Maybe this is a bad idea. But the birds are looking increasingly frustrated. Bigs doesn't want them to get angry, especially at Snakey.

"It's, um, not good. The trees are still dead-looking. There's mushrooms, I guess. But it doesn't look good."

Lily relays that and then nods encouragingly
"The most useful observation we could make is that the river around here"
They point with their wing
"is likely to be altered by beaver activity. Our mammal companion is impressed by your spears, is there any chance of us getting equipped if we do go after the vulture?"

Winter Sun furrows its feathers, while Singing Wind and Thistle glance at each other, before the latter responding:

"We can probably spare a few for now, even though early spring is not the best time for such a request - coming back in a few days would be better, but you probably do not want to linger. One would also worry whether we should worry about your return if you mean to face the hunting vulture. But yeah, we can provide a few."

"How many days? If we can avoid imposing during the spear hunting season we may be able to find things to occupy ourselves."
Mar 14, 2026 9:09 pm
Thistle responds, "It's not so much that it's peak spear hunting season, just that after winter everyone will focus on restocking everything, getting baths, and scouting the surroundings for a few days. People wouldn't find it awkward after, say, three or days from now. Maybe six if something unfortunate happens."

Winter Sun adds, "Definitely no later than start of summer, unless we decide to move the campsite south this year."

Singing Wind wonders, "If you plan to wait for those days, maybe we can just share work and fire and food? I think we saw the net with fish on the big one, right?"

"I'm inclined to get a look at the shrikes to the north first, but perhaps some of my fellows would stick around."

"Um...Snakey. Snakey. Do we have time to wait? For the, um, spears and stuff. Or will the mushrooms be mad at us? Because we're not doing the, um, calamities? I don't want the mushrooms to be mad..."

In Stag
"Hmm... you're right, we're not sure much time we have to work with"
In Beak
"Sorry, my companions are raring to go, so if you could spare those spears after all then we'll be on our way."
In Stag
"It looks like the easiest way to get to that high mountain is to follow the river back and then north, or do you want to try to get through the mountains?"
Mar 18, 2026 5:47 pm
Nemmie bristles with pride at the mention of the net. "My net," she says quietly, unable to fully prevent herself from taking credit.

Spears are good. Weapons are very good. Maybe just strap them to Bigs, let them porcupine-roll into enemies. However, a long wait with these unknowns....

Nemmie checks in with herself, digging deep. Trap? Ambush? Danger??

Yes. Much danger. The journey will be long and perilous. Less danger here. Hard to tell if the danger will grow with waiting. Also, the spider wants to see Bigs covered in spears.

""Spears good! Give to us, we kill stupid large bird." Nemmie's flippancy hides her fear, like a tissue hides an elephant. Vultures are not supposed to be dangerous. Big bald-heads make scary shadows, but only eat the dead. Vultures should not be attacking. Vultures very big, with cruel hooked beaks: not good enemy

The birds seem taken aback by the response of the bloodthirsty spider.

"Bugs are so bloodthirsty and overconfident . . ."

"Just like that?"

"We are not getting those spears back, I'm sure . . ."

But then Cinder, who kept a low profile until then, steps forward.

"Actually, these bugs are tough. The smaller one ambushed and overpowered me yesterday when I observed their camp, but was careful not to hurt me seriously. So I think worst case they will be able to cull a few of the shrikes along the way, which is still good for us. I'll go talk to the toolmakers."

Cinder departs towards the centre of the campsite, and Smaugalir tags along. In a few minutes, Cinder returns with four spears in a bundle tied together with what seems to be slings (made more obvious by the presence of small hide cradles for placing the projectile). Much like the one you've seen Cinder use, these spears are made of wooden sticks and stone spearheads tied and glued into them.

"Toolmakers said we'll be fine. Plus, Smaugalir, the medium bug, apparently is interested in staying behind, exchanging songs, and helping make some flutes and drums for the kids, so it's not like we're being made into fools by this gift."

With everyone getting a bit of rest and faring each other well, the Spritelings depart. The recent opportunity to look at the birds' map came in handy, as it marked some convenient fording spots, making it easy for Bigs to carry the passengers over the river in the shallowest, safest crossing to the eastern shore (which is optimal for the rest of the journey along the rivers).

By sunset, the Spritelings reach the fork in the river, and get to benefit from its abundant amounts of fish. The night is little different from the previous one, other than in lacking encounters with any new acquaintances.

The next morning - the dawn of the third day of spring - is noticeably warmer. By now, there is no snow remaining anywhere, leaves are returning to all the shrubs, and more flowers have sprouted here and there. With sunrise, you move out further north. It's a relatively pleasant walk along the river, with the warm sun and the cool wind balancing each other.

The terrain changes slightly as you pass the line marked as infested the Shrikes. Though perhaps the real cause more to do with this also being the approximate boundary where the grassy meadows and hills give way to cliffy mountains. That is to say, the ground here looks more arid and less overgrown, and there are fewer shrubs here.
Things do look a bit different as you go further north along the river. Around noon, you walk between the river and some rocks extending from a cliffside to the shore, and from behind them a different scene unfolds.

On the eastern side, where the shore and cliffs meet, there are some acacias growing amid a patch of grass. And on the acacias' thorns and branches, there are some rodent and bird carcasses.

OOC:
Time is 12:30 on day 3 of spring. Bigs gets to claim the Walk Like a Mammoth Drama Charge gains for the new day (for the food requirements), at a Trivial multiplier. Nemma also reduced wounds % from 8% to 6% over the course of the two nights of sleep.
