Who let the frogs out? (RP)

Persephone wanders after them, confused about this talk of frogs. Seeing Emma's interest in them, she shrugs, and says, "Children, I am a Batrachologist--a frog scientist. And we really should examine them before dropping them back in the water. We need to make sure that they are native to that habitant. Sometimes people dump their frogs, lizards, and snakes in the park, and the creatures are seen trying to LEAVE because they belong in a different ecosystem. Who knows? Maybe you'll have to take them home and put them in a tank so they can get the right water temperature and food! Would you like that? Well let us take a look, ok?"

Persephone glances at Emma and whispers, "I did take one class in herpetology as an undergrad. It was an elective....And the teacher was hella cute." She shrugs and smiles, but the smile is a bit sad, as she is suddenly aware of the distance between them since their fight.

Max rolls her eyes at Benji. "Right, you didn't know. And I suppose your cellphone ran out of juice right when you were about to call me." She can't really stay too angry at Benji, though. Vampires forgetting that they had cell phones was practically a supernatural stereotype.

Max blinks at Persephone and realizes she's slipped. Having a territory and guarding it is just starting to seem so natural to her that it's getting harder and harder to care about who knows it. "Err... yeah," she says in response. "I control the drug trade and chase the pimps away so the dolls can work at night without having to give their earnings to some asshole who doesn't deserve it. I make sure this neighborhood's a nice place to live, y'know? And part of that's making sure there aren't hellhounds wandering around it killing people."

She gives Persephone a confident smirk. "If you're going after that hellhound, let's work together Persephone. I can take you to a place it frequents if you want, and I've already picked up some samples. Between you and me, you'll have your revenge."
Oct 13, 2025 5:42 am
Persephone arches an eye brow and replies, "You are a drug dealer... who keeps the neighborhood safe? Like a vigilante hero who also sells drugs? Oooookay..." She obviously thinks Max's story is either very odd or a lie, but she isn't too concerned just yet about which it is--not unless Max and Circe become involved, of course! Then she will be a total P.I.T.A. nosy and over-protective older sister.

When Max talks of revenge, however, Persephone's eyes light up and she smiles wickedly and says, "Yes! I have plans for Choudry, oh so many plans..."

"Bactrianology is the study of camels." The precocious child corrects you, the 'duh!' clear in their voice. "We did them in school. And you can't put a frog in a fishtank. It will drown. My sister told me." The know-it-all does not stop you from looking, but also does not slow their progress towards the water's edge either, they are intent on depositing the creature into the environment, no matter how much damage it might do.

If you happen to recall the needed details from a distracted elective from years ago, you might suspect that this not a local frog, you don't recognise the breed.

You are being harassed by blonde women from all sides, but maybe Persephone's question about 'native habitats' and 'belonging to ecosystem' combines with Yasmine's babbling about frogs yesterday to cause concern?

Maybe spreading the contamination from St James Park to Hyde Park as well should be avoided? Do you care, though?

Were these really Fae? Maybe Benji was wrong, and the children were just trying to help frogs dodge traffic on a busy road and guide them home, or something...

She exhales, and brushes a strand of damp hair off her cheek. The whole thing suddenly felt very silly. She didn't think they should be harassing children. She was content to follow them with her eyes. Maybe once the frogs were back in the pond, she could approach and take a closer look, but for now, she was satisfied staying under her umbrella, holding on to Benji a little bit less tightly.

Benji remembers how difficult it was to catch that other frog in Jacob’s shop and so he is fairly certain that, if these children release the frogs in the Serpentine, they’ll be virtually impossible to catch again. And they will have to catch them—environmental concerns aside, how else will they figure out what these frogs have to do with the fae?

"My, you certainly are clever!" he says to the know-it-all child. "But I wouldn't release those frogs in the lake, if I were you. There are pelicans and other predators there that might eat them. You should let them go in one of the fountains instead. They will be safer there and they’ll have plenty of bugs to eat too."
OOC:
May I try Persuade an NPC? I guess the threat is that their frogs will be eaten by pelicans if they put them in the lake

"That's a good idea." The kids agree, changing course as if they had planned that all along. "Are you doing Shakespeare in the Park, or something?" One asks, looking at your clothing.

The fountain was closer, and they were growing bored with the rescue mission, anyway, so they plop the frogs in the shallow water of the overflowing fountain with a statue of a child wrestling a fish.

"Thanks for that." The statue says sarcastically, 'looking' down at the creatures that he is sure is going to poop in his pond.

Only those aligned with the statues ever seem to notice them 'speaking', so the kids are completely ignorant of the interaction and watch the frogs hops happily into the water.

Max steps up to the statue and stares up at it curiously, scratching her chin. "Well I'll fuckin' be," she murmurs.

"Sorry about that," Benji says, approaching the fountain after the children have gone. "We’ll have them out in a jiffy."

Shaking off Emma’s grip on his arm and passing her his umbrella to hold, Benji rolls up his sleeves and casually hops up to perch on the lip of the fountain, to better catch the frogs. Before he does, he looks up at the statue and then back over his shoulder at the road, just barely visible through the trees and says, "Actually, come to think of it, you didn’t happen to see a car vanish into thin air as it was driving down Piccadilly a couple weeks ago, did you?"

Persephone stands back, stymied by the precocious kid and then Benji speaking to... a fountain. She scratches her heard, looks at Emma, and says, "OK, I'm lost. Fae, frogs, and fountains? Oh my?"

"What!? Car!? What do I care for car!?" The statue, who you believe calls himself 'Greville' —though no one else does— exclaims. "Can't you see I am busy here? I'm trying to drown this damnable fish named Dolphin! And now I am surrounded by a veritable incursion of frogs! Get rid of them! Off with their legs!"

Greville's ire seems (in)directed at more than just the two frogs you have have before you, but they are always a little rambling and hard to understand.

"I have no idea what’s happening anymore" she was half bewildered, half laughing. She was completely clueless, but mysteries and wonders always delighted her and talking frogs (or fountains?) were unlike anything she has ever seen. Or maybe it was all part of Benji's imagination... they haven't really seen any evidence of anything supernatural yet

After gently setting Benji's umbrella down on the ground, she stepped closer while still holding her own over her head, and leaned toward the fountain to get a better look at the frogs Benji was trying to scoop up.

"Dolphin, did you see a car?" Benji asks the stone fish. He doesn’t really expect a response, but his recent interaction with the horse statue, Still Water, has made him curious about the other non-human statues around London.

To Greville, he says, "An incursion of frogs? Do you just mean these two or have there been others?"
OOC:
Do I need to make a roll to capture the frogs or can I just narrate Benji scooping them up?

How is a dolphin-fish like a horse? Neither give you more than feelings. Is what comes to mind when you interrogate the poor, beleaguered, animal portion of the statue.

"In the Hyde, no. But they approach." Greville answers you cryptically, he shoots a meaningful look towards the huntress statue on guard nearby, as though she may be partially responsible for for the delay. You know she does not speak.

Between five fully grown people you can manage to capture two frogs in a small, shallow basin... if the others help.

Persephone hears Emma and laughs along with her, adding, "Ok good, because I thought I was the only one! So, what, Benji talks to inanimate objects now? Is this a vampire thing or a, you know, a mental health issue?" she walks up next to Benji and puts a hand on his arm. She asks, "Are you ok, dear? You’re talking to a statue. Do you want us to get the frogs? Benji?"
Oct 14, 2025 8:47 pm
Max crosses her arms and addresses the statue. "The hellhound," she demands. "You've seen it, uh huh? Where did it come from? Which way did it go? What was it doing? Was anyone with it?"
Oct 15, 2025 1:45 am
"Hm? Oh, yes, I’m fine. Greville was just saying that the huntress has been defending the park against an incursion of frogs," Benji says, waving a hand in the direction of the Huntress Fountain. "Clearly the fae are up to something, but what? Anyway, we probably ought to catch these two before they hop away, don’t you think?" Perched on the edge of the fountain, he spots one of the frogs resting just below the surface of the water and makes a sudden lunge for it.
Oct 15, 2025 5:45 am
"Wait… you can hear them too?"
Emma blinks when Max starts talking to the statue as well. The thought that both Max and Benji have the exact same delusion seemed absurd. So either they were playing some sort of an elaborate prank on her, or they might actually be capable of talking with inanimate objects!

"Okay… so I guess that’s actually happening"

When Benji lunges for one of the frogs, she finally moves and protests "Hey, wait! don’t grab them!""If they really ARE fae, maybe they’re here because they want to be. We shouldn’t just decide that for them."

She crouches by the water’s edge, extending an open hand, palm up, toward the nearest frog and softens her voice "It’s alright… you can come over if you want. Benji’s nice. He’ll take care of you."
