OOC:
I misnamed the rule, but it does exist:

Death Timer. A dying character rolls 1d4 + their CON modifier (minimum 1 total) on their turn.
They die in that many rounds unless healed or stabilized. On each of the character's subsequent turns, that player rolls a d20. On a natural 20, the
character rises with 1 hit point. (p.89)

Here’s hoping Berith’s INT modifier is better than her WIS modifier.
OOC:
Well, hell. Thanks! I must have spent 15 minutes trying to understand that. Maybe I got confused as there isn’t a "self stabilise" on a lower role? Anyway, good one.

With quick action and sure hands Berith manage to extract the bolt and stem the floor of blood without causing the Goblin further damage. Though still unconscious she’s sure he should recover well rest and food.

OOC:
My Intelligence is not better than my Wisdom, but luckily for Borgo it worked out!
"I've got Borgo patched up for now." Berith yells up the stairs. "Anyone have any ideas? Should we try and make it across to the other doorway? We'll have to be careful of this crossbolt resetting and its partner on the other side."
OOC:
Has Berith noticed if there's enough room to crawl underneath the crossbolt path? Am I strong enough to carry Borgo or does Thak need to carry him?
Feb 3, 2026 7:40 am
Elspaeth glances about. "We do need to find a relatively safer place to recover..."

It's only been moments since Lattremond closed the door between yourselves and the creature whose wails still assault your phyches. His short sharp screams are still fresh in your mind. All you hear now is Berith working feverishly to stabilize Borgo on the stairwell.

Elspeath, the bottles still warm from Lattremond's hands, stands nearby watching Berith work. The filled with the muffled yowls, she offers a suggested plan of action. ...As her voice trails off, you finally notice the slow rythmic clicks from the reloading crossbow trap.

Given the mental assault you are under, you all understand that it might be dangerous to remain in such close proximity to this creature even though a stone door currently seperates you.

OOC:
I'm guessing the crossbows are too low to the ground to crawl underneath the flight path? Do we still hear the ticking sound of the crossbow resetting that got Borgo?
Feb 7, 2026 8:31 am
OOC:
No, you are sure you could crawl around without triggering the crossbows, out of they triggered, the bolts would surely pass over you.

Grabbing Borgo, Berith drags him up the stairs, trying to be careful of his bandaged wound. As she gets to the top of the stairs, she pauses a moment to make sure she still hears the clicking of the crossbow reloading. As she hears the clicking, she drags Borgo up the top of the stairs and onto the floor. 'I think it's time we leave this room.'

Using the light from Elspaeth's lantern, she judges the approximate area of the next crossbow facing them and leaves Borgo right before it. She shimmers her way on her stomach under the approximate path of the crossbow. As she makes it under, she turns around and drags Borgo to her. She stops in front of the open doorway to see if she sees anything down it.
OOC:
If I remember correctly, there is a hallway across the way so I'm going to start heading towards that. If either of you would rather attack the crossbow to at least provide a clear path if we need to come back this way I'm up for that instead of heading straight for the doorway. Here's hoping my wisdom save is high enough.

Pushing through the disorientation she's feeling, Berith quickly, but gently, picks up the prostrate Borgo and carries him back into the room. Stopping just at the far edge of the close doorway leading to the treasure room, she gently lays him down. She can see that the hall opposite is short, about 20" and ending in a set of stair leading up. She hesitates a moment before dropping down and crawling the next few feet. Unscathed, she turn and pulls Borgo to far side of the room.

Looking now she can see the stairs go up at least 15' but if shadow and darkness obscure what lay above.

OOC:
Take Elspeath's turn. I'll move Thak along after if dante_dark is busy at the moment.

Elspaeth follows Berith example, sliding under the crossbow trap, and bringing the lantern along behind with its bottom on the floor.

Elspeath plans to follow Berith, to carry the light… light… light… light…

Elspaeth shifts in place in apparent indecision, her eyes glassy and movements slow.

Seeing the others make their way safely past the trap, Thak emulates them and takes station on the other side of the hall entrance to Berith. "He going to make it?" Nodding quickly towards the stair at the end of the hall, "Do you know what lay this way? …Either way, we can not stay here. Elspaeth! Elspaeth! Gods!"

Under the multitudinous screeching and yowling, you hear soft thuds against the stone doors. You look back at the doors, but they don’t seem to shift or move.

And under it all, the slow clicking continues…
Feb 12, 2026 3:58 am
"Yes, he will Thak but we need to get him to someplace safe to rest." Looking worriedly at Elspaeth, she says to Thak, "Stay here with Borgo, be ready to leave immediately." Berith turns around and sliding back under the crossbow, she hurries to Elspaeth and grabs her arm hoping to lead her to safety. "Elspaeth, come on, we have to leave now!"
OOC:
Hoping my roll is good enough, I'd like to lead Elspaeth to the crossbow and help her slide under to get to the other side.

As Berith pulls on Elspaeth, she looks back dazedly and instinctively resists your pull. You notice a change in the creatures noise and the pressure against your mind eases ever so slightly. Elspaeth's eyes begin to focus as the myriad caterwaulings ebb and are swallowed by the surrounding stone.

You are left with a quickly fading ache in your skull and clear thoughts.

As the sound fades, the Thak sighs and sags slightly as if some weight has been lifted from him. Looking back towards you, he gently picks Borgo up and hoists him over his shoulders.

You surmise that the thing, being unable to open the door, has taken some other action. Has it retired to digest it's "meal". Has it gone to find another way around? Or perhaps it is simply silent, laying it wait for it's prey to open the door for it.
Feb 15, 2026 1:16 am
Nervous at the sudden quiet, Berith peers down the hallway now that Elspaeth and her lantern are here. Looking down the hallway she asks, 'I don't know, think there is a trap before we get to the stairs? I'd like to give Borgo time to rest, but I don't want to find out that creature is smart enough to open a door.' Drawing her sword again hoping that she can stab whatever lays ahead, she slowly begins walking down the hallway towards the stairs. Every few steps, she carefully places her foot to test the ground and make sure it is solid. She remembers the feeling of the floor just dropping out from under her and does not want a repeat performance.
OOC:
I'd like to take a little bit of time moving slowly, keeping an eye out for anything that looks like a trap. I'm checking the floor, walls, and even ceiling to see if anything looks amiss or seems wrong.
Feb 16, 2026 1:50 am
Elspaeth tries to clear her head of the invading noise, as she holds the lantern up for Berith to see better the area ahead. She doesn't move forward unless she has to.
Feb 16, 2026 4:28 am
With everyone safely across the room, Berith steps tentatively into the hall. Slowly and carefully making her way across, she doesn't seem to see anything she can identify as suspicious or dangerous and safely traverses the 20' to the base of the stairwell. Looking up, the full length of the stairs are illuminated with the top only dimly lit. You can make out with difficulty the walls and ceiling of the space above and believe this hallway continues above at least for a short way.

Thak, with Borgo across his shoulders, and Elspaeth, with lamp held high, await your signal from the crossbow room.
Feb 16, 2026 5:59 am
Berith nods at the group and motions that she is going to continue up the stairs. Berith will slowly walk up the first few steps, again searching for anything that looks suspicious. She will climb up far enough to see if she can peek over the top and into the hallway at the top of the stairs.
OOC:
If everything seems ok, I'm going to wave the group forward, but I want to see what I can first before Elspaeth moves forward with the lantern.
