Even with these dreams, Lyrel needed little time to rest, and whenever she was awake, her feet tapped and her fingers twitched until she started on the path to Orlane once more. So it was that, nearly a week later, Lyrel arrived in Hochoch in the morning of the day after Olpert sent the Dungeon Busters squad east to rescue Joseph and uncover/stop the evil in the village (Day 26 in our campaign reckoning). No sooner had the dusty, road-rank traveler set foot within the West Gate than she was approached by a friendly and very pretty young human woman, who introduced herself as Lienne. "Good morning, dear!" Lienne smiled, "You seem new to our town. Welcome to Hochoch! Is there anything I can help you find?"
Thank you, Lienne. I'm looking for Orlane's wizard.
Lyrel scans the horizon for a wizards tower, but seeing none from her current position she asks
Is there a tower, or is there an office where I can find this wizard?

Lienne

Lienne
Lienne frowns momentarily. "Orlane is down the Road a ways from here." She smoothly takes Lyrel's arm and walks with her, smiling broadly again. "Is this Wizard a relative of yours? A lover, perhaps? With such striking hair, I'm sure you have plenty of admirers! Now, now, don't frown so, it bunches up your face something awful. Oh, you poor thing, I see you really want your Wizard, I know how that goes. 'There is no heart that beats as fierce as a young one's!'

"Let's see...Orlane, Orlane...I understand they've been having many problems there recently. I don't know too much about it - only that food deliveries have stopped and the people there are getting replaced by changelings that look just like the originals - but you might be able to find out more from the Dungeon Busters. Some of them have just been to Orlane and come back this week, and most of them alive!"
Jul 19, 2025 5:39 am
Lyrel polightly reclaims the arm that Lienne took and walks side by side with the chatterbox

Madam...
Orlane is a colleague of mine, so put any other notion out of your mind.
I have heard about the Dungeon Busters, they do respectable work. And I appreciate the warning about the changelings.

She looks around for the inn.
I assume that they can be found in the inn at dinner time?

Lienne
Lienne seems a little disappointed at the personal space Lyrel is establishing. There are multiple inns in the town of Hochoch, but Lienne explains that "The Dungeon Busters have taken a particular liking to the Inn of Eternal Rest and usually stay there. They might not go back for dinner, but they very reliably return to the Inn for supper at sundown. It's morning now; would you like me to take you to the place where they're building their 'guild headquarters'?"

Not really waiting for a response, Lienne has already been walking in that direction. Soon enough, she has brought them back out of the old town through the south gate and into the more sprawling, haphazard streets of the new town. At the end of a long row of houses is a construction site where several carpenters and masons are hard at work. A grizzled veteran warrior stands there, watching them work, occasionally exchanging words with the empty air.
Jul 22, 2025 6:05 am
The grizzled warrior turns, and Lyrel can see that he was actually talking to a tiny gnome woman who is easy to overlook for the unnerving tendency she has to disappear when you are not looking directly at her. She seems to be surrounded by shifting shadows, despite it being a clear, sunny day. The grizzled warrior sighs on seeing Lienne, and then smiles broadly.

"Lienne! What a delight to see your shining face again! To what do I owe the pleasure this time?"

Lienne purrs like a cat at this attention, but her words are businesslike. "I've met this worthy adventurer, Lyrel Bladesinger, who is on a quest. She expressed some interest in Orlane, and I know you've just sent people there, so I suggested she could come here and ask you questions." The grizzled veteran nearly hides his surprise at this; Lyrel barely notices his left eye twitch. He sketches a courtly bow.

"Lyrel Bladesinger, was it? I am Olpert Razorsson, chief of the Hochoch branch of Dungeon Busters. This is my associate, Xana Beren." Olpert gestures to the gnome, who stares with alarming intensity. She may not have blinked this entire time. Then Xana breaks into a warm smile and does a pirouette. "Pleased to meetcha! Your hair is amazing!" She winks. "I sense there's money in your future!"

The four of you stand around awkwardly for a moment, then Olpert says into the silence: "Oh, Lienne! I've been meaning to ask you: what do you know about the courtly dances of the elvish nobility?" Lienne cocks an eyebrow and smiles with perfect teeth, but her words are arch. "Only what Durren has shown me the last seven times we've conversed."
"Ah."
There is a bit more silence, as the Dungeon Busters wait for Lienne to leave, and Lienne waits to overhear Lyrel's conversation. Olpert looks pointedly at Xana, who finally gets the hint. "Ohhhh!" Xana looks up at the human woman. "Lienne, what have you heard about Diana and that man Jonbon?" Lienne narrows her eyes. "I haven't heard anything..."
"Really?" Xana looks surprised. "I would've thought you would know all about it. I understand she's been asking Louis for permission to visit Jonbon for days now..." The implications are not lost on Lienne, she listens attentively as Xana continues talking, leading her away.

Olpert grins and shrugs apologetically. "So..." he addresses Lyrel. "You want to know about Orlane?"
Jul 22, 2025 8:53 am
Lyrel speaks gnomish: I'm pleased to meet you. Have you also been marked by the fay? Or do the shadows cling to you for a different reason?

Lyrel turns to Olpert. For starters I have been tasked to meet the wizard
Jul 22, 2025 2:50 pm
"Oh, it's not the Fey." Xana responded cryptically in Gnomish before leaving with Lienne.

"The wizard?" Olpert frowns, and calls out to one of the builders about how they're setting a wall. Then he returns his attention to Lyrel. "I know of two wizards here in Hochoch: Larissa, and our own Kragga Moonweaver. He should be back later today, if you'd like to meet with him." A group of people arrive, leading some oxen dragging a sledge loaded with lumber. Olpert gestures to them, indicating where they should leave the supplies. The people - one of whom is a massive blue-scaled reptile thing - begin unloading the lumber. Olpert turns back to Lyrel. "That's Thacogygax, one of us Dungeon Busters. He's very strong, but he also sticks out like a sore thumb, so I tend not to send him along with the others to do anything...covert." He sighs, running a hand over his bald pate. "Kragga is a bit unusual, too, but he manages to blend in a bit better. But you were talking about Orlane. If you're looking for a wizard there, I don't know what to tell you. All of my people who have been to Orlane are either dead, missing, or are on their way back there now. I've sent that group to find one of our own, who disappeared there: a halfling named Joseph. If you are called to Orlane, you would do well to go with allies. Even then, it's been pretty dangerous for my people. Have you ever thought about an adventuring career?"

OOC:
help me with direction here. Where do you see this conversation going?
Lyrel runs her fingers through her hair causing a few flames to fligger. I am not normal myself, and I would expect any wizard to be a bit unusual to. Ever since I escaped the fay wild, it have been clear to me that the adventuring path is the one before me. It can't really be anything else.
I have been pointed to the town of Orlane, to aid the greate wizard there. But I assumed that it was a citizen there. What is the problem with Orlane, since people are dying or go missing there?
Perhaps the returning group knows something?

She draws her blade partly from the sheath and shows off the silver runes on sword. I will join the next experdition you are planning. Do you know what or who is causing these problems?

OOC:
It can go as long or as short as you like. There's all kinds of stuff that she can discover and/or do, but I was envisioning that any or all of these three things might easily happen via role-play, or we can shortcut them:
1) Lyrel joins the Dungeon Busters
2) Lyrel gets information that sends her on to Orlane
3) Lyrel meets the person who will be her trainer if she ever gains a level

Jul 24, 2025 8:07 am
The fellow I spoke to at the crossroad camp, agreed that the Dungoen Busters would benefit from me joining.

You seem to be a leader or coordinator. What is going on in Orlane?
Jul 24, 2025 3:36 pm
Olpert is delighted to hear Lyrel's interest in joining the guild. He explains how Dungeon Busters works: they perform good deeds in the community to build name recognition, then the community starts to commission them to perform various tasks well-suited to adventurers. In Hochoch, they've already done the first part, in rescuing Keb's wife and business, and saving the Jarl family on top of that. The adventurers are encouraged to donate to the organization, but dues are not required, and the members are free to keep salvaged money and goods taken from villains as long as reasonable effort is taken to determine that the wealth wasn't stolen from innocent locals. Any such dividends that can't be returned are expected to be split evenly among the adventurers involved in the expedition that retrieved them. Meanwhile, Olpert's job is to set up a pipeline of cushier paid jobs that are less interesting, but less dangerous, too. People pay the Dungeon Busters to do these things, too, and the adventurers that do get a cut. It's not as exciting as vanquishing armies of undead, but it's designed to be a way to support adventurers as they age, are injured, or grow infirm so that they don't have to resort to the other forms of adventurer retirement: begging, dying in a bar fight, or getting executed for theft.

Olpert explains that the Dungeon Busters guild has a number of current missions: hunting down a man-killing owlbear, bringing Bandit Black to justice, and getting to the bottom of why Orlane has stopped sending its food shipments.

Since Lyrel is clearly interested most in the Orlane mission, Olpert goes into more detail:
"We don't know what's going on in Orlane, not exactly. But through a number of expeditions, we have learned some things that point to a larger situation: Orlane's population has largely been devoted to Merikka, goddess of growth. For generations, Merikka has blessed the village with bountiful harvests of the best, most vigorous crops. They supply food to most of southern Keoland and western Gran March...or they did until recently.

"The shipments have dwindled and, by the time we got here, stopped altogether. Trade through Orlane has all but stopped, and merchants who travel there were rebuffed or never came back to tell about their experiences. Some of our people stopped a madman, Jonbon, from kidnapping an entire family - the Jarls - with the intent of taking them back to Orlane.

"Some of our people went to Orlane: there they discovered that the people are distrustful, probably because a secret cult has taken hold of many. The cultists abduct people at night and take them to somebody identified as "her" to be indoctrinated. The cultists who are residents of Orlane are working with troglodytes, and the troglodytes have gone so far as to abduct at least one Hochoch resident so far. So the influence of the cult is spreading.

"As of yet, the cult is acting in secret, acting as if nothing has changed with them during the day, but at some point they may reach a critical mass that they can operate openly. The cultists are often identified by a spiral symbol, either in a worn object or in some kind of mutilation - tattoos or scars - on their bodies. Many of the cultists have fought to the death, rather than surrender or accept compromise.

"Our people have fought and defeated cultists three times, during which time one of our members, Joseph, disappeared, and another, Reptile, was killed. I've just sent a larger party back to find Joseph and put a stop to the cult. You're welcome to go after them; they were talking about secret tunnels under the Golden Grain Inn. They also have found a few people that have helped them: a human gardener/hermit called Ramne, a retired human adventurer named Alan, and a couple of elves who seem to be working with/for the Mayor. Any of the other residents could be cultists, but we're pretty sure that the Constable and his two cronies are members of the cult.

"If you go after them, go with my blessing. But know that our people have had run-ins with troglodytes, undead, bandits, and that damned owlbear in the forest between here and Orlane."
Jul 24, 2025 8:12 pm
Do we, the Dungeon Busters, have a code or a sign/counter sign so they know I'm a friend?
And do you have an example of the cult mark? Again, if I run into hostiles, I would be able to show the symbol.

With these two vital pieces of knowledge in place, she wrackes her brain if there is something else she would need to know before leaving.

I have been directed to the wizard of Orlane, but what other practitioners lives in the area? She smiles at Olpert, one of her first. Just want alternatives, you see.
Jul 24, 2025 11:45 pm
Olpert nods, noting that the others had talked about creating a sign or secret handshake or something...but they haven't done it yet. So what they've been doing in the meantime is to share details about the Dungeon Busters that only they would know, which Olpert sketches out for Lyrel (basically, this is a review of the list of people in Hochoch, particularly the Dungeon Busters).

Olpert shows the sample cult insignia that Aanbo provided him: a pendant of green material that a jeweler or smith twisted into a spiral. He is reluctant to give it to Lyrel, out of concern that she may be mis-identified as a cultist as a result, but will if she insists.

Olpert restates that the Dungeon Busters have a wizard, Kragga, and that Hochoch's resident magician is Larissa "the Shadowed."
OOC:
@runekyndig - if you want Lyrel to meet with Kragga and/or Larissa, I can summarize that or we can role-play it. Otherwise we can proceed to her journey through the Dim Forest toward Orlane. Just let me know which you prefer.
Jul 25, 2025 8:06 am
I would appreciate an introduktion to Larissa the Shadowed, but otherwise I think I should get to Orlane
Jul 25, 2025 4:42 pm
Olpert gestures Thacogygax over, and then sends the blue thraakon to find Kragga. Lyrel waits patiently while Olpert supervises the work beginning on the digging of the well. Thacogygax returns with a half-orc nearly as massive as he is: Kragga Moonweaver. "This one in the temple found I." the blue reptilian says. Then he goes back to work on the guild hall. Olpert comes over and introduces Kragga and explains to the shaggy wizard that Lyrel wants to meet his mentor, Larissa.

Kragga is delighted to meet another student of the mystical arts, and the two of them get quickly deep in thaumaturgical theory as Kragga leads the way to Larissa's home. They see the woman sitting out on a patio in the sunshine, reading a book and taking notes. But as they approach, the sun dims until it is as dark standing by Larissa as if they were in the shade of an umbrella. Larissa holds up a finger, directing them to wait until she finishes her thought in the notes she's writing. Lyrel notes with professional interest the high quality of the exotic ink that Larissa uses. Then the wizard puts the pen back in the inkwell and sprinkles some sand from a pouch onto her manuscript. "Kragga, dear!" Larissa says with a broad smile, her voice deep and warm, with a little rasp as if she's spent a lifetime smoking. She takes in the sight of Lyrel with her literally flaming hair. "Who is this enchanting creature?"

As Larissa causes three full place settings for a midday meal to appear and set themselves before her and her guests, Kragga introduces Lyrel as the newest Dungeon Buster (and a wizard), and Lyrel explains the vision that she'd had, and her need to support the wizard of Orlane. "Well, that's simple," Larissa chuckles. "You want to see Ramne. He's the most powerful wizard anywhere in the region...aside from myself, of course. I've known Ramne a long, long time. If you go, say hello to Whiskers for me (that's his familiar) and tell Ramne I'm waiting for him to continue our game." She thinks for a moment more. "Your vision may be divine, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was just him trying to get an apprentice to help him on his farm. HA!" She slaps her thigh. "Still, if you go and he doesn't offer to teach you, come back to me after you've confirmed your duty and I can...if you still want to learn more magic in that possible future, that is. I sense you've got potential, girl. I wouldn't want to see it go to waste with a bunch of meathead sword-wavers." Kragga snorts and then retorts: "Master, I've told you that they are good, honorable heroes!" "I don't see how anybody who doesn't read can be called a hero..." Larissa mutters under her breath. Soon enough you've all finished the meal and are sated. Larissa has provided directions to Ramne's grove in Orlane. Lyrel realizes that it is midday, and she should head out east if she's going to travel today at all.
Jul 25, 2025 6:06 pm
I will see you all soon enough, with the rest of the Dungeon Buster expedition.
Then she heads off towards Orlane
