Even with these dreams, Lyrel needed little time to rest, and whenever she was awake, her feet tapped and her fingers twitched until she started on the path to Orlane once more. So it was that, nearly a week later, Lyrel arrived in Hochoch in the morning of the day after Olpert sent the Dungeon Busters squad east to rescue Joseph and uncover/stop the evil in the village (Day 26 in our campaign reckoning). No sooner had the dusty, road-rank traveler set foot within the West Gate than she was approached by a friendly and very pretty young human woman, who introduced herself as Lienne. "Good morning, dear!" Lienne smiled, "You seem new to our town. Welcome to Hochoch! Is there anything I can help you find?"
Thank you, Lienne. I'm looking for Orlane's wizard.
Lyrel scans the horizon for a wizards tower, but seeing none from her current position she asks
Is there a tower, or is there an office where I can find this wizard?

Lienne
Lienne frowns momentarily. "Orlane is down the Road a ways from here." She smoothly takes Lyrel's arm and walks with her, smiling broadly again. "Is this Wizard a relative of yours? A lover, perhaps? With such striking hair, I'm sure you have plenty of admirers! Now, now, don't frown so, it bunches up your face something awful. Oh, you poor thing, I see you really want your Wizard, I know how that goes. 'There is no heart that beats as fierce as a young one's!'

"Let's see...Orlane, Orlane...I understand they've been having many problems there recently. I don't know too much about it - only that food deliveries have stopped and the people there are getting replaced by changelings that look just like the originals - but you might be able to find out more from the Dungeon Busters. Some of them have just been to Orlane and come back this week, and most of them alive!"
Jul 19, 2025 5:39 am
Lyrel polightly reclaims the arm that Lienne took and walks side by side with the chatterbox

Madam...
Orlane is a colleague of mine, so put any other notion out of your mind.
I have heard about the Dungeon Busters, they do respectable work. And I appreciate the warning about the changelings.

She looks around for the inn.
I assume that they can be found in the inn at dinner time?

Lienne
Lienne seems a little disappointed at the personal space Lyrel is establishing. There are multiple inns in the town of Hochoch, but Lienne explains that "The Dungeon Busters have taken a particular liking to the Inn of Eternal Rest and usually stay there. They might not go back for dinner, but they very reliably return to the Inn for supper at sundown. It's morning now; would you like me to take you to the place where they're building their 'guild headquarters'?"

Not really waiting for a response, Lienne has already been walking in that direction. Soon enough, she has brought them back out of the old town through the south gate and into the more sprawling, haphazard streets of the new town. At the end of a long row of houses is a construction site where several carpenters and masons are hard at work. A grizzled veteran warrior stands there, watching them work, occasionally exchanging words with the empty air.
Jul 22, 2025 6:05 am
The grizzled warrior turns, and Lyrel can see that he was actually talking to a tiny gnome woman who is easy to overlook for the unnerving tendency she has to disappear when you are not looking directly at her. She seems to be surrounded by shifting shadows, despite it being a clear, sunny day. The grizzled warrior sighs on seeing Lienne, and then smiles broadly.

"Lienne! What a delight to see your shining face again! To what do I owe the pleasure this time?"

Lienne purrs like a cat at this attention, but her words are businesslike. "I've met this worthy adventurer, Lyrel Bladesinger, who is on a quest. She expressed some interest in Orlane, and I know you've just sent people there, so I suggested she could come here and ask you questions." The grizzled veteran nearly hides his surprise at this; Lyrel barely notices his left eye twitch. He sketches a courtly bow.

"Lyrel Bladesinger, was it? I am Olpert Razorsson, chief of the Hochoch branch of Dungeon Busters. This is my associate, Xana Beren." Olpert gestures to the gnome, who stares with alarming intensity. She may not have blinked this entire time. Then Xana breaks into a warm smile and does a pirouette. "Pleased to meetcha! Your hair is amazing!" She winks. "I sense there's money in your future!"

The four of you stand around awkwardly for a moment, then Olpert says into the silence: "Oh, Lienne! I've been meaning to ask you: what do you know about the courtly dances of the elvish nobility?" Lienne cocks an eyebrow and smiles with perfect teeth, but her words are arch. "Only what Durren has shown me the last seven times we've conversed."
"Ah."
There is a bit more silence, as the Dungeon Busters wait for Lienne to leave, and Lienne waits to overhear Lyrel's conversation. Olpert looks pointedly at Xana, who finally gets the hint. "Ohhhh!" Xana looks up at the human woman. "Lienne, what have you heard about Diana and that man Jonbon?" Lienne narrows her eyes. "I haven't heard anything..."
"Really?" Xana looks surprised. "I would've thought you would know all about it. I understand she's been asking Louis for permission to visit Jonbon for days now..." The implications are not lost on Lienne, she listens attentively as Xana continues talking, leading her away.

Olpert grins and shrugs apologetically. "So..." he addresses Lyrel. "You want to know about Orlane?"
Jul 22, 2025 8:53 am
Lyrel speaks gnomish: I'm pleased to meet you. Have you also been marked by the fay? Or do the shadows cling to you for a different reason?

Lyrel turns to Olpert. For starters I have been tasked to meet the wizard
Jul 22, 2025 2:50 pm
"Oh, it's not the Fey." Xana responded cryptically in Gnomish before leaving with Lienne.

"The wizard?" Olpert frowns, and calls out to one of the builders about how they're setting a wall. Then he returns his attention to Lyrel. "I know of two wizards here in Hochoch: Larissa, and our own Kragga Moonweaver. He should be back later today, if you'd like to meet with him." A group of people arrive, leading some oxen dragging a sledge loaded with lumber. Olpert gestures to them, indicating where they should leave the supplies. The people - one of whom is a massive blue-scaled reptile thing - begin unloading the lumber. Olpert turns back to Lyrel. "That's Thacogygax, one of us Dungeon Busters. He's very strong, but he also sticks out like a sore thumb, so I tend not to send him along with the others to do anything...covert." He sighs, running a hand over his bald pate. "Kragga is a bit unusual, too, but he manages to blend in a bit better. But you were talking about Orlane. If you're looking for a wizard there, I don't know what to tell you. All of my people who have been to Orlane are either dead, missing, or are on their way back there now. I've sent that group to find one of our own, who disappeared there: a halfling named Joseph. If you are called to Orlane, you would do well to go with allies. Even then, it's been pretty dangerous for my people. Have you ever thought about an adventuring career?"
Jul 22, 2025 3:51 pm
OOC:
help me with direction here. Where do you see this conversation going?
Lyrel runs her fingers through her hair causing a few flames to fligger. I am not normal myself, and I would expect any wizard to be a bit unusual to. Ever since I escaped the fay wild, it have been clear to me that the adventuring path is the one before me. It can't really be anything else.
I have been pointed to the town of Orlane, to aid the greate wizard there. But I assumed that it was a citizen there. What is the problem with Orlane, since people are dying or go missing there?
Perhaps the returning group knows something?

She draws her blade partly from the sheath and shows off the silver runes on sword. I will join the next experdition you are planning. Do you know what or who is causing these problems?

runekyndig says:
help me with direction here. Where do you see this conversation going?
OOC:
It can go as long or as short as you like. There's all kinds of stuff that she can discover and/or do, but I was envisioning that any or all of these three things might easily happen via role-play, or we can shortcut them:
1) Lyrel joins the Dungeon Busters
2) Lyrel gets information that sends her on to Orlane
3) Lyrel meets the person who will be her trainer if she ever gains a level

Jul 24, 2025 8:07 am
The fellow I spoke to at the crossroad camp, agreed that the Dungoen Busters would benefit from me joining.

You seem to be a leader or coordinator. What is going on in Orlane?
Jul 24, 2025 3:36 pm
Olpert is delighted to hear Lyrel's interest in joining the guild. He explains how Dungeon Busters works: they perform good deeds in the community to build name recognition, then the community starts to commission them to perform various tasks well-suited to adventurers. In Hochoch, they've already done the first part, in rescuing Keb's wife and business, and saving the Jarl family on top of that. The adventurers are encouraged to donate to the organization, but dues are not required, and the members are free to keep salvaged money and goods taken from villains as long as reasonable effort is taken to determine that the wealth wasn't stolen from innocent locals. Any such dividends that can't be returned are expected to be split evenly among the adventurers involved in the expedition that retrieved them. Meanwhile, Olpert's job is to set up a pipeline of cushier paid jobs that are less interesting, but less dangerous, too. People pay the Dungeon Busters to do these things, too, and the adventurers that do get a cut. It's not as exciting as vanquishing armies of undead, but it's designed to be a way to support adventurers as they age, are injured, or grow infirm so that they don't have to resort to the other forms of adventurer retirement: begging, dying in a bar fight, or getting executed for theft.

Olpert explains that the Dungeon Busters guild has a number of current missions: hunting down a man-killing owlbear, bringing Bandit Black to justice, and getting to the bottom of why Orlane has stopped sending its food shipments.

Since Lyrel is clearly interested most in the Orlane mission, Olpert goes into more detail:
"We don't know what's going on in Orlane, not exactly. But through a number of expeditions, we have learned some things that point to a larger situation: Orlane's population has largely been devoted to Merikka, goddess of growth. For generations, Merikka has blessed the village with bountiful harvests of the best, most vigorous crops. They supply food to most of southern Keoland and western Gran March...or they did until recently.

"The shipments have dwindled and, by the time we got here, stopped altogether. Trade through Orlane has all but stopped, and merchants who travel there were rebuffed or never came back to tell about their experiences. Some of our people stopped a madman, Jonbon, from kidnapping an entire family - the Jarls - with the intent of taking them back to Orlane.

"Some of our people went to Orlane: there they discovered that the people are distrustful, probably because a secret cult has taken hold of many. The cultists abduct people at night and take them to somebody identified as "her" to be indoctrinated. The cultists who are residents of Orlane are working with troglodytes, and the troglodytes have gone so far as to abduct at least one Hochoch resident so far. So the influence of the cult is spreading.

"As of yet, the cult is acting in secret, acting as if nothing has changed with them during the day, but at some point they may reach a critical mass that they can operate openly. The cultists are often identified by a spiral symbol, either in a worn object or in some kind of mutilation - tattoos or scars - on their bodies. Many of the cultists have fought to the death, rather than surrender or accept compromise.

"Our people have fought and defeated cultists three times, during which time one of our members, Joseph, disappeared, and another, Reptile, was killed. I've just sent a larger party back to find Joseph and put a stop to the cult. You're welcome to go after them; they were talking about secret tunnels under the Golden Grain Inn. They also have found a few people that have helped them: a human gardener/hermit called Ramne, a retired human adventurer named Alan, and a couple of elves who seem to be working with/for the Mayor. Any of the other residents could be cultists, but we're pretty sure that the Constable and his two cronies are members of the cult.

"If you go after them, go with my blessing. But know that our people have had run-ins with troglodytes, undead, bandits, and that damned owlbear in the forest between here and Orlane."
Jul 24, 2025 8:12 pm
Do we, the Dungeon Busters, have a code or a sign/counter sign so they know I'm a friend?
And do you have an example of the cult mark? Again, if I run into hostiles, I would be able to show the symbol.

With these two vital pieces of knowledge in place, she wrackes her brain if there is something else she would need to know before leaving.

I have been directed to the wizard of Orlane, but what other practitioners lives in the area? She smiles at Olpert, one of her first. Just want alternatives, you see.
Jul 24, 2025 11:45 pm
Olpert nods, noting that the others had talked about creating a sign or secret handshake or something...but they haven't done it yet. So what they've been doing in the meantime is to share details about the Dungeon Busters that only they would know, which Olpert sketches out for Lyrel (basically, this is a review of the list of people in Hochoch, particularly the Dungeon Busters).

Olpert shows the sample cult insignia that Aanbo provided him: a pendant of green material that a jeweler or smith twisted into a spiral. He is reluctant to give it to Lyrel, out of concern that she may be mis-identified as a cultist as a result, but will if she insists.

Olpert restates that the Dungeon Busters have a wizard, Kragga, and that Hochoch's resident magician is Larissa "the Shadowed."
OOC:
@runekyndig - if you want Lyrel to meet with Kragga and/or Larissa, I can summarize that or we can role-play it. Otherwise we can proceed to her journey through the Dim Forest toward Orlane. Just let me know which you prefer.
Jul 25, 2025 8:06 am
I would appreciate an introduktion to Larissa the Shadowed, but otherwise I think I should get to Orlane
Jul 25, 2025 4:42 pm
Olpert gestures Thacogygax over, and then sends the blue thraakon to find Kragga. Lyrel waits patiently while Olpert supervises the work beginning on the digging of the well. Thacogygax returns with a half-orc nearly as massive as he is: Kragga Moonweaver. "This one in the temple found I." the blue reptilian says. Then he goes back to work on the guild hall. Olpert comes over and introduces Kragga and explains to the shaggy wizard that Lyrel wants to meet his mentor, Larissa.

Kragga is delighted to meet another student of the mystical arts, and the two of them get quickly deep in thaumaturgical theory as Kragga leads the way to Larissa's home. They see the woman sitting out on a patio in the sunshine, reading a book and taking notes. But as they approach, the sun dims until it is as dark standing by Larissa as if they were in the shade of an umbrella. Larissa holds up a finger, directing them to wait until she finishes her thought in the notes she's writing. Lyrel notes with professional interest the high quality of the exotic ink that Larissa uses. Then the wizard puts the pen back in the inkwell and sprinkles some sand from a pouch onto her manuscript. "Kragga, dear!" Larissa says with a broad smile, her voice deep and warm, with a little rasp as if she's spent a lifetime smoking. She takes in the sight of Lyrel with her literally flaming hair. "Who is this enchanting creature?"

As Larissa causes three full place settings for a midday meal to appear and set themselves before her and her guests, Kragga introduces Lyrel as the newest Dungeon Buster (and a wizard), and Lyrel explains the vision that she'd had, and her need to support the wizard of Orlane. "Well, that's simple," Larissa chuckles. "You want to see Ramne. He's the most powerful wizard anywhere in the region...aside from myself, of course. I've known Ramne a long, long time. If you go, say hello to Whiskers for me (that's his familiar) and tell Ramne I'm waiting for him to continue our game." She thinks for a moment more. "Your vision may be divine, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was just him trying to get an apprentice to help him on his farm. HA!" She slaps her thigh. "Still, if you go and he doesn't offer to teach you, come back to me after you've confirmed your duty and I can...if you still want to learn more magic in that possible future, that is. I sense you've got potential, girl. I wouldn't want to see it go to waste with a bunch of meathead sword-wavers." Kragga snorts and then retorts: "Master, I've told you that they are good, honorable heroes!" "I don't see how anybody who doesn't read can be called a hero..." Larissa mutters under her breath. Soon enough you've all finished the meal and are sated. Larissa has provided directions to Ramne's grove in Orlane. Lyrel realizes that it is midday, and she should head out east if she's going to travel today at all.
Jul 25, 2025 6:06 pm
I will see you all soon enough, with the rest of the Dungeon Buster expedition.
Then she heads off towards Orlane
Mar 27, 2026 9:24 am
Kazzak, accustomed to maneuvering carts through mountainous passages, enjoys the relative ease of the road through the forest. From his driver’s seat, he asks the group, "What’s our first stop? The Golden Grain Inn? The church? The town hall? Or do we stop at the first farm we see?"
Mar 27, 2026 9:54 am
"I say we go see the mayor or Alan. They sounded like allies. Maybe we should check on Alan and see if he and his family are alright."
Mar 27, 2026 1:11 pm
Antonius walked alongside the wagon in thoughtful silence for a time before speaking, his gaze drifting between the tree line of the Dim Forest and the road ahead. "This Alan… his home lies near the forest’s edge?" he asked evenly, though there was a quiet weight behind the question. "If so, it may serve us well to begin there." His hand rested lightly on the haft of his warhammer as he continued, voice measured. "The dead have been stirring in these woods. That is seldom without cause—and rarely without proximity." He paused, eyes narrowing slightly as the distant thoughts of Orlane laying somewhere ahead. "As for entering the village openly… I would advise caution. If the accounts are true, then what waits within may wear the faces of the living while serving something… else." His tone remained calm, but firm. "Better we approach with knowledge than announce ourselves and walk blind into whatever has taken root there."
Mar 27, 2026 1:49 pm
"Mr. Talky is right. We don't want to stumble in there without getting the lay of the land."
Mar 27, 2026 4:25 pm
"Speaking to the Mayor is a fine choice, as is finding Alan or even the elves," says Amnestria, "but what is our reason for coming to Orlane? We should get that squared away before we arrive."
Mar 27, 2026 8:46 pm
"We could say we are seeking grain to buy? Or something like that."
Mar 27, 2026 9:24 pm
Antonius slowed half a step at Sora’s remark, turning his head just enough to fix her with a distinctly incredulous look—one brow lifting ever so slightly beneath the shadow of his hood. For a fleeting moment, the stern cleric of Wee Jas looked almost… human. He exhaled quietly through his nose and muttered under his breath, just audible enough for those nearest, "Mr. Talky… I’ve been called worse, I suppose." The corner of his mouth twitched—whether in amusement or resignation was hard to tell—before his composure snapped cleanly back into place.

Straightening, he cast a measured glance ahead toward Orlane. "If we are to meet the mayor," he said calmly, "then we are merchants’ guards and roadwardens out of Hochoch—come to inquire about disrupted trade and offer assistance restoring safe passage. It is simple, plausible… and gives us reason to ask questions without inviting too many in return."

"I like that story, Antonius. It carries truth. We are worried about the road’s safety, and Olpert is a merchant of a sort."

"Before we talk to the mayor, though, I would like to find out whose side he is is on. If we find this Alan, we can ask him about Joseph and the townspeople. I think we must assume everyone is compromised unless proven otherwise."

He pauses, then adds, "And we should stay together and must always have an escape plan’."

Amnestria hums in thought. "We were told the Mayor was an ally. Do you think he may have been kidnapped since then? Truthfully, we don't even know his name so it may be hard to determine if the person in that position is truly a friend."
Mar 28, 2026 12:24 pm
Nodding"Yes, the mayor, elves, Alan, and Ramne are stated allies and that comes from Chase so it is truth but caution is always prudent."
Mar 29, 2026 1:44 am
"This is an unfamiliar situation for me. Back home I always knew friend from foe."
Mar 29, 2026 5:05 am
"It was always a puzzle in the Watch, whether someone was going to stab you or ask for money."
Mar 31, 2026 5:54 pm
"Acting as mercenaries in the employ of merchants might indeed provide a good enough reason to be there," the uncharacteristically taciturn knight spoke, breaking a long moment of reverie. He left unsaid what he thought internally: that perhaps it was unbefitting, perhaps risible, for a knight to use a ruse such as this. He need not announce his presence and titles to all he met, but a ruse was akin to lying, an act uncomfortable -- and unfamiliar -- to the young man.

"Though I believe that our first task would be to find out about the more experienced team. They will be able to tell us where we might be most useful in finding Joseph, or in looking for evidence of this cult, or doing whatever is needful" the young nobleman continued. Of course, it might be that the advance team might be hidden, or busy in some tunnels. They'd probably need more than one story to tell, depending on the situation they found in Orlane.

"What if we posed as ordinary travelers? These cultists might then try to capture us and, in repelling them, we would reveal who they are, perhaps gain useful knowledge from any captives!" A more frontal plan, something involving valour and honesty, he thought.
Apr 1, 2026 2:44 am
Antonius inclined his head slightly toward Berthold, his expression measured but approving. "A prudent approach," he said evenly. "One truth rarely survives first contact unchanged—best we carry more than one." His thoughts drifted briefly toward Orlane ahead. "We present ourselves as merchants’ guards where it serves, and as simple travelers where it invites less scrutiny. Flexibility will keep us alive—and perhaps reveal more than a single story ever could."
Apr 1, 2026 3:02 am
Amnestria nods. "Yes, it's certainly easier to pretend that we're ordinary travelers, but wouldn't the... hm, diverse nature of our group arouse suspicion? I think it might be easier to say we are retainers or staff under the flag of Sir Berthold, if that's the case. There's enough 'truth' to our actual arrangement as Dungeon Busters that it should pass further scrutiny. For example, Antonius could pose a spiritual advisor, while I could pass myself off as Sir Berthold's scribe or accountant... unless that job is already taken by one of your actual retinue."
Apr 1, 2026 7:46 pm
"I can act like a typical driver until other action is required. That would work in a variety of situations."
Apr 2, 2026 12:13 am
Reynald is not sure that he likes the idea of posing as someone ordinary, much less his master doing so. So it is with some dismay that he listens to this plan developing, but he chokes down his umbrage and finds that he is willing to downplay his own status if the exalted Baronet is willing to debase himself for the cause. Far be it from him to object to an indignity that his master - who, with his much higher station, has much more reason to be offended at being mistaken for someone common - accepts.
Apr 2, 2026 4:36 pm
"It will be interesting to see their faces in Orlane when they see me. We need to watch very closely because if they have done anything with or to Chase they will be very surprised to see me. We are identical twins in every way except talents."
Apr 2, 2026 4:54 pm
"Worry not Reynald, Mistress Amnestria’s solution is certainly the wisest and the most cunning: if we are to disguise our motives as we enter this nest of serpents, we need not necessarily disguise our station," he said with a wink to his squire. "Of course I would not presume to press all of you into the service of House Dunsdale, even as a ruse. Those unwilling to play that specific role are, of course, free to claim another motive. Perhaps they found it wise to traverse the Dim under the guardianship of a Knight, his retinue and their baggage train".

The young Noble was obviously trying to thread the needle. There was no manner in which he could accept the notion that he was in the service of the DungeonBusters, nor could he pretend simply to be an ordinary traveller. A travelling knight, however, was a not so uncommon feature in these lands. By natural law, a virtuous and valiant man would attract a good number of followers and hangers-by. It was but the nature of contemporary society. Yes, that would work well enough when they entered Orlane. If they entered openly, that is.

"Something I just thought of ... if we are associated with nobility, others may think twice about making us 'disappear.' At the beginning, at least."
Apr 2, 2026 6:55 pm
"I am good with that plan. Most people this far south won't know a boundary warden by sight. Just let me know what role you would like me to play." Then he will go on But like I said they will believe I am Chase so I don't know what impact that will have."
Apr 2, 2026 7:09 pm
"Excuse me. Time for someone to wake up."

Kazzak turns his attention to the circular object next to him on the driver's bench, an object covered by a thick, dark brown cloth. He lifts the cover -- once a tunic, based on the material and the position of the meticulously sewn holes -- revealing a midnight blue canary within a circular cage.

"Everyone, this is 'Admiral.' His family has been an invaluable help in the mines back home and my family insisted I take him on my journey." Kazzak pulls a small pouch from his belt and pours a mixture of seeds and vegetable bits into the cage. The canary chirps in delight and attacks his meal.
Apr 3, 2026 2:30 am
Antonius listened to the exchange in silence, the steady red glow of his amulet of Wee Jas reflecting faintly across his features as he considered each angle. At length, he gave a small, decisive nod. "It is sound," he said evenly. "A knight and his retinue invites less suspicion than a band of strangers with no shared purpose." His gaze shifted briefly between Berthold and Amnestria. "I will take the role of spiritual advisor without issue—it requires no deception beyond what I already am." He paused, then added with quiet pragmatism, "And should scrutiny deepen, truth will support the story well enough."

As Kazzak tended to the small midnight-blue canary, Antonius’s eyes lingered on the bird for a moment. "Keep it close," he remarked quietly. "Creatures like that have a way of sensing what men overlook—disturbance, decay… things out of place."

@mathias0077

After several hours of labor, the conversation between the two men comes slowly, born more from shared effort than any need to fill the silence. Antonius pauses to drive the shovel into the loose earth beside the latest grave, straightening his back with a weary groan before taking a drink from his waterskin. The fading light catches the sweat and dirt smeared across his face, making him look less like a priest and more like the watchman he once was.

He glances over at Dell, who is busy working the mattock through another stubborn root.

"My thanks again for the help," Antonius says, his tone sincere. "Most would have found an excuse to be elsewhere by now." He gives a faint smile before looking out toward the darkening forest, he falls quiet for a few moments, returning to his digging before speaking again.

"You mentioned the Boundary Wardens of Agaden Reach before." Antonius drives the shovel into the earth and levers out another heavy clump of dirt. "I've known city watches, temple guards, and soldiers, but not many Wardens." He plants the shovel and rests both hands on the handle. "How does a man end up riding the borders and wild places instead of settling behind walls? Were you born to it, or did the Reach find you the way the Watch found me?"

Dell will pause for a minute and listen to Antonious's question"My twin brother Chase was recruited by the Wardens because of his skill in the wilds. Our father taught us from the time we could talk about the wilderness and hunting and tracking."Dell stops for a minute to take a couple more swings at a stubborn root. "Chase took it very naturally. I am okay at it but when the Wardens recruited Chase I went along also and found I had a different skill set. Stealth and infiltration is my thing. I joined the Shadows which is the covert arm of the Wardens. I figured out the plot that Chase exposed and then had to flee. He stare off thinking of Chase"That is why I am here. To find Chase and tell him the Wardens are all dead except us and Agaden Reach has fallen through the treachery he exposed."

He will then ask Antonious"How did you go from watch to cleric? Or was it the other way around?" He will then continue to dig as he listens.

Antonius listens in silence as Dell speaks, continuing to work the shovel into the earth while the rogue recounts the story of Chase, the Wardens, and the fall of Agaden Reach. He says nothing at first when Dell mentions being the last survivors, only nodding slowly as though he understands the weight of carrying such news. When Dell finishes and repeats the question, Antonius rests both hands atop the shovel handle and looks out into the darkening trees for a moment before answering.

"The Watch came first," he says at last, a faint smile tugging at one corner of his mouth. "Much to the disappointment of several priests, if memory serves."

He levers another shovelful of dirt from the grave before continuing.

"I was born in Hochoch. My father worked the docks hauling cargo and unloading river barges. Hard work, long days, and little patience for excuses. He taught me that if a job was worth doing, it was worth doing properly." Antonius glances at the neat graves they have spent hours preparing. "I suspect he'd approve of this, miserable as it is."

The cleric pauses to catch his breath before continuing.

"When I was old enough, I joined the city watch. It was honest work, and Hochoch always needed men willing to stand between ordinary folk and those who would prey upon them. I found I had a talent for it. Not the fighting—though that helped—but for seeing people as they were. Liars, thieves, murderers, victims. You learn quickly that most people are neither wholly good nor wholly bad."
The shovel strikes stone with a dull clack.
"What surprised me was how much of the job involved the dead. More than criminals, more than patrols. Recovering bodies from alleys, riverbanks, burning homes. Delivering news to families. Standing watch while priests performed their rites."

His voice softens slightly.

"Most watchmen dreaded those duties. I never did."

Antonius crouches to clear loose soil from the grave before continuing.

"One winter a fever swept through the poorer districts near the docks. The temples were overwhelmed and every pair of hands was needed. The Watch helped where it could. For weeks I worked alongside the priests of Wee Jas, burying the dead, recording names, helping families identify loved ones. It was grim work... but necessary."
A thoughtful look crosses his face.

"One of the senior clergy told me that I approached death the same way I approached law—with respect, order, and duty. She said I was already serving Wee Jas whether I realized it or not."

He chuckles quietly.
"I thought she was trying to recruit me. Turns out she was."

The grave is nearly complete now. Antonius steps down into it briefly to level the bottom before climbing back out.

"So for years I served both. Watchman by day, temple acolyte when duty allowed. Eventually I became a sergeant. Eventually I became a cleric. Then one day I realized the temple was asking more of me than the Watch ever could."

He plants the shovel firmly into the earth.

"The funny thing is, I never really stopped being a watchman. I still investigate deaths. I still hunt criminals. I still keep the peace where I can." His eyes drift toward the graves of the bandits. "My badge simply changed shape."

After a moment, Antonius looks back toward Dell and gives a small nod.
"And for what it's worth, I understand why you're here. If one of my brothers had vanished carrying the truth of a conspiracy that destroyed everything we'd sworn to protect, I'd cross every cursed forest in the Flanaess to find him too. Tell me about Chase it may give us clues on the path he maybe on?"

Dell listens to Atonious's background as he continues to work and is very impressed and even reminded of Chase a bit.

At he question of Chase he smiles and thinks where to begin." My brother was always gifted it when came to tracking and hunting which made him a perfect candidate for the Border Wardens." He stops for a second to take a draw of his waterskin and offer it to Antonious."Being born two minuets before me always made him feel like my protector. We grew up running the woods around our house and prcticing the skills bestowed apon us by our father. Chase was always better at tracking but I was superior in the stealth department which kinda created a stalemate in our hide and seek games. We also share a special bond I guess because we were born so close we can kind of sense each other the closer we get." Dell stares off trying concentrate a bit to see if he can get any sense of Chase but to no avail. He come back to the story"After we joined up I informed Chase that I had discovered the our enemy Mad King George had hired a large force of orcs to raid and burn and pillage around our village and a few others. Chase took a small band of towns men and defeated the orcs that had three times their number. I was able to give him the route so he could choose the best ground to defend. After that he was promoted to head warden and our boarders were never safer."

Dell will retrieve his water skin"All was well for a bit fight off raiders here and there but then I uncovered a plot against the Reach. I was on mission and discovered the our head councilor Joseph was in league with our enemy King George. I informed Chase and gave him the proof but asked that he take some time to get a few things secured before going to the council. He would have none of that. He went to councilman he thought he could trust and handed over the evidence and asked that he call a special session. But before that could happen Joseph framed Chase for the murder of said councilman. I was able to get him out before they came for him. But with Chase gone that was the beginning of the end for us. Within a few months all the wardens were gathered up and executed for treason. I was able to slip away before being caught. I like to think a few others did as well but I knew I had to come find him and let him know what has happened." Dell will bow his head abit and he says a silent prayer for the wardens." I am afraid once I tell him he will want to charge off to find whatever wardens he can and try to save our people."

Antonius accepts the waterskin with a grateful nod and takes a measured drink before returning it. He listens without interruption as Dell recounts the story, the rise and fall of Agaden Reach, and the burden he has carried ever since. The cleric's expression remains thoughtful throughout, his shovel resting across his shoulders as the last light filters through the trees.

When Dell finally falls silent, Antonius takes a long moment before answering.
"Your brother sounds like the sort of man people are willing to follow into danger," he says quietly. "Not because he ordered them to, but because they believed he would be standing in the front rank when the fighting started."

A faint smile touches his face.
"And from what you've told me, he sounds stubborn enough to ignore good advice from his younger brother when he should have listened."

The smile fades, replaced by a more solemn look.
"Do not underestimate what your actions meant to him, Dell. You speak of Chase's victories, his promotions, and his reputation, but every story you tell has your hand upon it somewhere. You found the routes. You uncovered the conspiracies. You brought him the truth even when it put you in danger." Antonius taps the handle of his shovel against the earth. "Men like Chase often stand in the sunlight. They become the heroes people remember. But heroes do not stand alone. I suspect your brother knows exactly what he owes you, whether he says it aloud or not."

He glances toward the growing row of graves.
"As for telling him what happened..." Antonius sighs heavily. "That is a harder duty."

The cleric studies Dell for a moment before continuing.
"If Chase is the man you've described, then he will blame himself. He'll think that if he had stayed, fought harder, trusted different people, or acted sooner, things might have ended differently. Men who carry responsibility often do."

He bends to lift another shovelful of dirt.
"My advice? if you wish to take it. Tell him the truth, but not all at once. Let him see that you survived first. Let him know he still has a brother before you tell him what he has lost. A man can endure terrible news if he knows he does not have to bear it alone."

Antonius pauses and looks directly at Dell.
"And when the time comes, remind him of something else. The Reach did not fall because Chase failed. It fell because traitors betrayed it. There is a difference."

The cleric returns to his work for a few moments before speaking again, his tone softer than before.
"You fear he'll want to charge off and save whoever remains. Perhaps he will. From what you've told me, I would be disappointed if he didn't."

A small chuckle escapes him.
"But first he will need to grieve. Then he will need a purpose. The best thing you can do is make sure he has both a brother and a path forward when that day comes."

With that, Antonius drives the shovel into the earth once more and adds, almost as an afterthought:
"Besides, if Chase truly is as protective as you say, his first concern will likely be why his younger brother wandered halfway across the Flanaess without him."

Dell listens to Antonious as he continues to work. He thinks to himself I am glad I came to help. Not did I help with the bodies but I was also helped by his words. "Well spoken Antonious. I may need your help convincing him once we find him." Dell chuckles"Well this looks complete. How about we get washed up a bit and grab some grub?"

The Priest gives a nod of agreement, "Thank you for the company, it made this more bearable." Antonius then gathers up the tools.
