"So much for another tunnel. I guess going back the way we came is the only way."

"Aanbo’s right. Let’s leave this stuff behind, as it is. We have to strike while they are unaware of our presence," Myrtha chimed in. "Joseph’s been taken. Recovering him should be our priority."

Aanbo considers one of the rooms. "There is the cave with the statue," he says. "However, the fact that skeletons were all around it makes me think it's another chamber of death. I doubt that will lead to anything beneficial, but maybe there's something I'm missing?"
Looking to the flame-haired fey, Aanbo asks, "Lyrel, you went to check for magic, right? Did you find anything?"

Nothing by the statue or in the room where we fought the first snake. Other than your gear.

Aanbo nods. "Thank you."
Turning to the others, he asks, "Should we head back upstairs? It might be easier to discuss our next steps in a more-comfortable environment."

Theran shakes his head, making it clear something is bothering him. "I just can't accept that there's nothing down here. We have to be missing something. What about the room with the lights?"
Sep 2, 2025 10:20 pm
I agree Theran, there has to be something. They wouldn't have went to all this trouble I don't believe. We need to look for covered entrances."
Sep 2, 2025 10:38 pm
Aanbo nods. "Then if we're ready, let's check everything again. This time, we'll also keep any eye out for potential snake-related ambushes."

The party carries the chests back into the smaller cave, two adventurers working together and lifting each side of the full chest, and then Morton carefully replaces the frame with the canvas "wall" as Ember smoothes out the furrows that the chests dug in the earth. In the end, the group is satisfied that it will pass casual inspection.
OOC:
Will you all remain in a large group, or will you split up to cover ground more quickly?Sep 3, 2025 11:51 am
Myrtha nods in agreement.
OOC:
I thought we'd explored the rom with the statue thoroughly. What is the room with lights?Sep 3, 2025 3:58 pm
"Consider," Ember says, "That of all the cultists you have killed and subsequently searched, how many have had money on them? While I would not expect these people to be wealthy, I would expect to find some disposable income. However, from what I understand, there was none. So where is it? I suspect that this is just a staging area and the money is collected and taken elsewhere regularly."
Sep 3, 2025 4:11 pm
"That's the suspicion, but we had discovered that one individual kept things for himself," says Aanbo. "Whether he was a part of the cult or just worked alongside is unknown."
OOC:
We will stick together.Sep 4, 2025 1:49 am
The party takes about an hour to thoroughly examine and test the walls every few paces, but they find no concealed doors or false walls aside from the one that hid the loot stash. The party has ended up in the statue room, examining the magnificent-but-grotesque work of carved ivory once more. It remains incredible craftsmanship, but a horrible subject: surely something that exists only in the nightmares of the artist. Right?
"What does this mean?" Arya Arkon grumps, a dirt smudge on her nose accenting her otherwise clear skin. She gestures all around them, making it clear she's not just talking about the statue. "What's the point of having walking dead roam this place if they aren't guarding a path to a base?" Frustrated, she blows a hank of hair out of her face, the once-luscious locks now lank with sweat.
Just then, everyone hears a loud THUD! in the distance. Looking at each other, the heroes realize that it is the sound of the exit door being slammed shut.

"I guess they know we're here, now. It'll be noisy getting out."
Confident in her capacity to carve an opening through the door with her handaxes, if need be, the warrior was mostly concerned about the noise that would make, and the fact that there might be half the village on the other side when they broke through the door.
"We could stay put and wait for them to come to us, and then break out. They can't be sure we're the ones down here."

Does the sound suggest the door closing or the door closing and the bar sliding in?Last edited September 5, 2025 7:14 am

There has to be something with this snake statue. If there is no magical trigger there must be a physical one.

Consulting with Myrtha, Aanbo adds, "If their intent is to trap us here, perhaps this is more evidence that these tunnels go nowhere. Or, maybe they were just doing a casual inspection and thought they left the door open?"
