Ember hears the faint scuff of something scrambling fast toward her in the deep darkness, and so is not surprised when a humanoid form appears to lunge at her.

Everyone, please roll initiative.

OOC:
Since Ember was not surprised (exactly matching the thing's stealth check), I have not rolled the creature's attack yet. Ember has detected something approaching fast from the left (tunnel heading south), but it's not in a place that anyone could see it yet.

Woot. Morton is fast with a 16. (Can easily run for his life! But needs to kick someone slower first.)

Myrtha observes the stiffening of Ember’s posture and understands, before she can actually hear or see anything, that the feral resident has returned.

"You don't know the streets here, and it would attract attention if I changed my routine to show you around myself. Your best chance of safety is to join the other Dungeon Busters, but they left a few hours ago. My familiar has been scouting the village for me; I can have her alert us when she finds them again. I know that their plan was to come back to the Golden Grain Inn (where they were nearly captured more than a week ago) at night to explore some secret tunnels under the Inn."
It sounds like I need to learn this "Find familar" spell - and go the the Golden Grain Inn, and look under the floors
Lyrel have Ramne look at her sword before she goes.
This blades power is doment, and I hope to awaken it some how.

When her blade is returned she cast the Mager Armor spell and then heads towards the Inn

"Do you need to go to the Inn now, during the day? I might be able to find you a guide. Or do you want to wait for tonight, when the Dungeon Busters said they would return? It's been a long time since another wizard had time to compare notes with me."
OOC:
@runekyndig - Remember, in Lyrel's timeline we're about 10 hours ahead of/earlier than when the rest of the group is in the tunnels (when they've waited out the whole day in the woods). Ramne's offering Lyrel two choices: she can explore the village in the daylight (Lyrel would play solo a bit more as she explored Orlane: running the risk of discovery, but possibly finding out useful information), or study with Ramne until the Dungeon Busters return to town (which means, among other things, that we could insert you into the encounter today or tomorrow IRL).

Lyrel lets herself be convinced to stay and keep Ramne company during the daylight hours. He has her stay in his hut as they discuss theories of magic. He asks her a lot of questions about her research and experiments: what gestures have been more effective than others, what balance between comfort and efficacy has she struck in intonations? He expresses polite interest in her sword whenever she brings up the subject, but it is clear he is much more interested in magic spells. Periodically he leaves her to go outside and tend his garden, check for spies, and put on a show of being a daffy old coot for a few minutes. Then he comes back when the coast is clear and he has communicated with Whiskers. The weasel spends the day roaming around the village, observing, and then circles back to the outskirts of the grove, close enough that Ramne can receive its thoughts.

Ramne the wizard notes Lyrel's interest in Whiskers, and, reassured by their conversation that she is an apt practitioner, he provides the materials and discusses with her the finer points of summoning a familiar. This takes the whole day: Lyrel listening, discussing, and understanding, Ramne explaining, then leaving to check on things outside while Lyrel continues the process of scribing.

At the end of it, night has fallen, Ramne has lit candles, Lyrel has added "Find Familiar" to her spellbook, and Ramne returns with a report that the Dungeon Busters have just entered the Golden Grain Inn, so she should leave now.

Lyrel works the bords over the cellar door and with the help of her dagger, she manage to pry them loose enough to get through. After that is a simple task to follow the noice.

The hunger of the dark, round one
(this is followed by round two)

A shift of air, a whiff of decay, or some sixth sense alerts Ember to the fact that there are things coming toward her in the dark: silent, scurrying, fast. She has moments to act before they are upon her.
https://i.imgur.com/23R9mi7.png
OOC:
@WhtKnt - Ember cannot see the creatures, but she can still attack with DISADV (or use a spell that affects an area). Of course, she doesn't have to stay there; she could fall back to join the others in the room (the things are not adjacent to her yet).
@matmaisan - Myrtha is also going to act before the things reveal their presence, and she too can't see them in the dark.
It is time for Ember and Myrtha to take their turns.
Everyone else can post their turns now, or wait to see what the "Hungry" do first.
Ember falls back as Myrtha cries "Ember! Get behind me!" and rushes forward, shoving past Arya in the narrow tunnel just as a corpse springs around the corner. While this is clearly a dead humanoid, it is unlike any undead that Myrtha or any of the others have seen previously. Unlike the priests of the New Dawn that Aanbo and Theran had encountered in the Forest Temple, this thing was clearly not magically preserved from aging, but at the same time it is not desiccated or decayed like the undead of the Dim Forest. This thing seems paradoxically vital, and exhibits a crude cunning as it lunges for the doughty human warrior.

Myrtha's spear plunges at the creature as soon as it appears: the point pierces the leathery desiccated flesh and the thing bares its teeth, the remains of a face contorting into a silent grimace of pain.
The monster takes 9 piercing damage!

Then the undead attacks her in turn, grasping and slashing with clawed hands. Myrtha is taken aback by its ferocity as it pulls itself forward on the spear to get at her, and the claws reach over her shield to gouge her face.
Myrtha takes 9 slashing damage and must roll a DC10 CON saving throw!

Aanbo moves up to Myrtha as Arya moves back, fervently gripping her hammer. "Fall back a bit," the monk advises, "Let them get stuck in single-file while we flank the entrance!"

Seeing the thing clawing at Myrtha's face, Morton opens himself to his demonic patron, and the power of fiendish hellfire flows through the conduit he creates, erupting from the elf's outstretched hand in a wave of projected force. The blast ruffles Aanbo's hair and blows past Myrtha's ear to catch the monster in the cheek.
The ravenous undead takes 2 force damage!

Nearby, Lyrel stands at a solid wood door that had been barred with a beam. The beam has been removed, and it is a simple matter to open the door and proceed into the packed earth tunnel beyond. Stepping in, Lyrel can hear muffled, agitated conversation coming from the southeast tunnel, but the packed earth deadens the sound and she can't make out the meaning of the words.
https://i.imgur.com/Gkct4Mj.png

Theran moves up behind Arya until he can lay eyes on the thing attacking Myrtha. Drawing both upon the nightmares of his past and his connection with the fungal engine of decay in the packed earth all around them, the haunted druid forms a ghostly hand in the air in front of him, which then flies corkscrewing through the air, weaving in and out of the spaces between his companions until it latches onto the monster's ghastly arm. The hand sends ghostly mycelium tendrils into the monster's flesh, draining more of its abominable health from its body.
The hungry creature takes 5 necrotic damage!

"Ember take the torch." Chase hands the flickering torch to Ember, then strings his bow as he steps up behind Theran. Through the flames of Arya's torch, he can just see Myrtha struggling with something there, and calls out to their defender: "Myrtha - keep falling back so I can get some shots off."

For her part, Mother Arkon prepares to soothe Myrtha's wounds, but can't get through the press of people to reach her.

"Ember! Get behind me!" the warrior cried out as she crossed the cavern and put herself just in front of Arya, with shield held before her, and an enchanted spearhead seeking something to pierce.
OOC:
Assuming each square is 10’ to a side, Myrtha should have just enough movement to go through Arya’s square. If she doesn’t have to use a dash action to get beyond the priestess, she will then ready an attack action against the first foe to come into the light.
Myrtha will be happy to serve as a cork in the natural bottleneck, giving time for the party to reorganize and counter-attack. This all assumes that Ember doesn’t stay to attack the incoming foes.
If the proposed actions are allowed, I can edit this post to add the attack rolls once they are necessary.

EDIT: Attack roll added

Ember does as she is bidden, moving behind the priestess and into the room proper.

Round one, continued...
OOC:
I know it may not seem like it (because I've made the tokens smaller than the squares so that their labels are easier to read), but the squares here are all 5' squares. For that matter, all dungeon maps in this adventure are 5' squares unless explicitly stated otherwise.

@matmaisan - You should roll Myrtha's Readied attack now.
@WhtKnt - If I didn't move Ember to the square you wanted, let me know and I'll adjust it. She could be in the square behind Morton, for instance, and that would give her line of sight on the creature. In addition, if you care to, I will accept that you have had Ember prepare an action (since all she did on her turn was Move), so long as the prepared move is not something informed by what you've seen after her turn (ie, saying that 'she Readied a ranged attack that triggers when the first party member is attacked' is fine, but saying that 'she Readied a casting of Turn Undead as soon as the first enemy appeared' wouldn't be).

23 - Ember
17 - Myrtha
17 - The Hungry
16 - Aanbo

GM: Does Morton have a possible view of the hungry undead for purposes of Eldritch Blast?
Jul 30, 2025 12:55 pm
Arya step back from one square, and ready her hammer. For now there is not much she can do with the bottleneck in the corridor.
