Tzal was half asleep, but as others started to talk, he stirred from his position, stifling a yawn. "Indeed, we are probably new here. May I know your name, mister?"
Oct 17, 2025 2:39 pm
The bear settles down on his haunches. "Oh, yes. All of the animals here talk. Do they not where you're from?"

He turns to Tzal. "I am Ompha. I was just roaming around the woods, as is my wont, looking for something scrumptious to eat." He chuckles. "Don't worry, I don't eat people! Just fish, honey, and roots, mostly. You wouldn't happen to have any tasty treats, would you?"
Oct 17, 2025 2:52 pm
R3N-L3, still holding out the slice of cheesecake, seemed oddly offended at the implication that his offering didn't qualify as a tasty treat.

OOC:
Sorry, I missed that in your post!
Ompha sniffs the cake, then happily scarfs it down. "Mmm! This is delicious!" he says, licking his chops.

Seeing an opportunity in the creature's placation by way of pastry, Lauretta begins intensely examining Ompha's appearance and mannerisms. Could it really be as simple as just a bear that can speak? She had her doubts. The great axe still sat close to her, unable to let her guard down despite Ompha's cuteness. "No, animals do not speak where we are from. They also generally do not approach camps out of fear of people and fire. What brings you here?"

"Indeed, what makes you so bold as to trust our natures. We can be unpredictable."

Wolfram threw that in there to suggest that the bear might not be entirely safe in their company if it decided to become something malevolent. He was curious how Ompha would answer the priest.

"Nobody trusts humans based on nature. They trust humans based on relative force. Historically only humans judge humans on their nature." R3N-L3 rumbled. Whoever nobody was, it seemed to exclude humans but include a talking bear and Clockworks.

Tzal listened to the bear with great interest, "Hmm, talking animals. Quite fascinating. Do you perhaps have a town where all the bears live as a community?"
Oct 20, 2025 2:30 pm
"Well, you did not attack me, and you gave me something tasty to eat, so you seem like nice enough folks," Ompha says. "I came out of curiosity, but now I shall stay out of friendship!"

The bear looks at Tzal quizzically. "A town of bears? That's a silly notion! I live on my own my in my little den. Eventually, I might find a mate and settle down, raise some cubs, but that day's still a long way off!"

He scratches at his ear with his back paw. "Anyway, you did something nice for me, so I'll do something nice for you! Is there something I can help you with?"

"Why is it that most of the creatures here seem inordinately inhospitable to basic humans? As you can see, my travelling companions are sacks of organic matter, and must retain their form to stay alive. But this land seems unusually hard to survive for them. Where are all the sensible fae?"
Oct 21, 2025 2:27 pm
OOC:
Assuming Ompha is not disguised or speaking any lies. Also, I forgot we were looking for Ompha, haha.
Lauretta continues staring somewhat bewildered at the bear, but her hand has slipped away from the great axe. "Sensible fae aren't a thing, Renly. There are some that might manage to make sense for a time, but ultimately they will return to their incomprehensible nature. As for you, Ompha, we seek a way out of faerie land and back to the land of mortals. Another creature by the name of Myxlix offered to show us the way out for completing several nonsensical tasks, but we're still to locate Old Man time and a wicked witch. A swimming hill as well, whatever that means. I believe there was another task, but I cannot recall." Her back pressed up against the log, relaxing as she explained to the oddly friendly bear.

"I don't know about an old man, but there's a evil hag who lives in a cave nearby," Ompha says. "She used to be a nymph before grief and wickedness twisted her heart and body. Now she plots against all the good and true creatures of the forest. I'd recommend you stay far away from her, but if you need to find her to get home, I can at least show you the way to her lair.

"I've heard of the swimming hill, too. There's a sinkhole deeper in the forest where dead things float in the muck. Some hills poke up from the dirty water, and there's one that moves around sometimes. But it's not always there. I don't know where it goes when it's not there."
Oct 21, 2025 4:28 pm
Tzal was taken aback by the answer but he expected something like this from an animal afterall. "So, there is a moving hill and a hag. I will suggest investigating the moving hill before approaching the twisted nymph."
Oct 22, 2025 12:35 am
"Why? I am more capable of slaying a nymph than a hill by twenty-three percent, averaged and rounded to the nearest integer." R3N-L3 intoned in his usual monotone, never quite enough to produce a sound of curiosity that no doubt must be lurking behind the words.
Oct 22, 2025 1:11 am
"I have to agree with Tzal. The hill should be investigated first. Maybe it's a rumor, this hill that moves, but we should see for ourselves.

Wolfram's eyes narrow at the clockwork and his calculated probabilities.

Ompha stays nearby and watches over you as you sleep, ensuring nothing troubles your rest. The next morning, the bear leads you through the woods After a couple of hours, you arrive at an irregularly shaped depression in the ground. It is 100 yards at its widest, but is generally 40 yards across. Hillocks push up from the algae-choked waters and beneath the scum skin. In the waters float dead things, the skeletal remains of hunters, charcoal burners, and other woods folk.

You scan the region for a few minutes, then R3N-L3 notices one of the hillocks move a few feet before coming to rest again. You glimpse a few pink flowers growing on the hillock.
OOC:
The hillock is 10 yards from the shore.
Oct 23, 2025 4:02 pm
Examining the remarkably ominous remains at the bottom of the hillocks, R3N-L3 pointed towards the hillock he'd spotted shuffle. "When that hill begins to eat me, do as you think best." R3N-L3 told the party, before beginning to trudge towards the flowering hillock.
Oct 23, 2025 6:20 pm
Tzal raised his hands to call R3N-L3 back, "Wait, my friend. We can do this in a different way without you facing the moving hillock. Can you gather me some sturdy dead corpses that are floating on the water? Then we can move closer to the hill and watch what it does. I have a plan."
OOC:
Since this is happening next day, does that mean we have completed a rest? I mean so everything is replenished?
Oct 23, 2025 7:55 pm
It took a few seconds of cogitation where the Clockwork stood in silence, before he unslung the spear from his pack and knelt at the water's edge, trying to hook corpses and drag them back ashore so they could be used as bait.
Oct 24, 2025 6:15 am
Tzal walked towards R3N-L3 and looked at the largest one the clockwork had brought ashore. He then looked at the hillock and pointed towards it. "Let's move closer to the hillock." Once they were 10 yards from the hillock, Tzal pointed to the ground to drop the corpse. He took out a purplish-black ink-colored vial and dropped its content over it. The corpse shook and rose up animated, trying to stand on all fours. Tzal pointed at the hillock and sent it closer to investigate.
OOC:
I am using minor animation to raise up the corpse and send it towards the hillock. It would remain animated for a minute, so it has to move quickly. I just want to see if the hillock is a large creature or how it behaves with a target moving closer to it.
