Chapter 4: Trip the Light Fantastic

Jul 9, 2025 12:24 pm
You have been traveling through the borderlands, in search of more adventure to be had, more good deeds to be done. But suddenly, therer's a ripple in the air, and everything changes. The normal trees of the forest have been replaced by enormous redwoods growing all around. They have birch bark, and here and there, faces appear, looking sternly at you before vanishing once again. Glowing motes drift in the air, shedding dim light. Sounds of birds, squirrels, distant muted conversation, and breeze-stirred leaves fill the air.

Looking behind you, you see no sign of the path on which you had been treading. Tzal is the first to realize what has happened. You've stumbled through a thin place in the world and have stepped into the faerie realm! And getting back out again will likely be much more complicated...
Jul 9, 2025 11:42 pm
"Contrary to popular belief, the Weird Wizard did not create faeries. And if he did, they are acting precisely in accordance with their purpose. Which is to be annoying little -Expletive in plural format-." R3N-L3 quite literally said "Expletive in Plural Format" as he took a quick look around before shrugging, and with the tactical modicum of movement he usually acted upon, he retrieved a parcel of raspberry chocolate cookies out of his pack.

One really had to wonder where he'd learned baking, and why he was spending so much time on it. He walked over to one of the trees, offering some to a nearby squirrel. "Trade proposition. I provide these cookies. You bury our remains after we have been eaten alive by the faeries."

The ripple through the air was followed by Lauretta abruptly stopping the tale she was telling from her mercenary days. Annoyingly, Sergeant Heath's duel with a giant crab would have to wait to be finished another day. As she caught sight of the shifting faces in the trees, the Preceptor had almost forgotten she was telling the tale entirely. "Never ran into anything like this in all my years." Her axe was brandished in no time at all.

Watching R3N-L3 with eyebrows that questioned his sanity, Lauretta stepped closer to Wolfram. In a land such as this, it brought her some comfort to stand next to who she perceived to be the most normal of her companions. "I don't think faeries can eat the steel you're made of, Renly. We'll want to stick together if we're to make it out of this damned place. Whatever you do, don't trust anything."
Jul 17, 2025 8:47 pm
"Ha, would you look at that. Seems like we have stepped through a portal of some kind. Wished we could have waited for Lauretta to finish that tale. Fascinating, it was so far."

Wolfram noticed Lauretta's new proximity and felt a little taller. Whether it was that she found him a comfort as they entered into battle yet again, or something else, he wasn't sure, but it was nice all the same.

"Let's see if our cookie baker can convince these faeries to leave us be and tell us where we are before we get too hasty with weapons."

That didn't stop Wolfram from placing a hand on his enchanted dagger.
Jul 17, 2025 11:26 pm
"Understood, friend Lauretta, I shall not trust anything, including you." R3N-L3 intoned.
Jul 18, 2025 8:08 am
You proceed along the path for several minutes. Eventually, you see a large rock set on the side of the path. A short humanoid faerie sits on the rock, weaving a shirt from spider silk. The faerie has long clumps of bright hair that stick out from the sides of his head, a large bulbous nose, and no chin to speak of. He wears a red robe trimmed in yellow.

"Ah! Greetings, mortals and automaton. It seems you've stumbled into our little realm here," he says cheerily. "My name's Myxlix, and this here is the Sky Pillars, named for the tall trees that hold up the heavens."
Jul 18, 2025 2:07 pm
"Greetings. I will not trust you as I was instructed to by someone I do not trust." R3N-L3 said, descending into slightly awkward silence before proffering another cookie.

"Pastries do not require trust or a lack thereof, however."
Jul 19, 2025 3:10 pm
Wolfram chuckles at Renly's comment about trust. It made the forester re-evaluate his feelings about the clockwork, at least in as much as it deserved to be addressed as Renly.

Wolfram was of course delighted to be among these odd trees and this strange looking faeire with the tufts of bright hair piqued his interest.

"Greetings, Myxlix. It seems as though we have entered your world unexpectedly. What is this place whose trees have faces that come and go? Don't mind Renly here. He knows no better, being an automaton as you seem to know already."
Jul 21, 2025 8:02 am
"How delightful!" Myxlix says as he takes the cookie R3N-L3 offers. He munches on it happily.

"This here is the edge of our great faerie kingdom," the little man says to Wolfram. "A great and wondrous forest, it is. But not for mortals or constructs such as yourselves. You may not find everybody here as accommodating as me. They'll seek to trick and pester you for sport. Some may out-and-out try to kill you! So be on your guard!"
Jul 21, 2025 11:04 am
"Understood. Raising guard now." Something seemed to whirr briefly in R3N-L3's carapace, but nothing actually appeared to be happening. A second later, the warform tilted his head in the man's direction. "If they attempt to kill us, would it not be justified for us to exterminate them?"
Jul 21, 2025 11:38 pm
Lauretta's finger raised as if to counter the clockwork's directive to not trust her, but then it slowly dropped. Actually, that's probably for the best. Changelings or illusions could always be afoot. She simply followed alongside Wolfram as they continued on. "Remind me and I'll finish the tale later. Though, I'm not sure if any of my tales will ever live up to Renly, the cookie-baking war machine."
The Preceptor's guard did not break throughout their jaunt, and it certainly did not do so when they bumped into Myxlix. She considered arguing that pastries do require a degree of trust, but she thought the better of it. "I'd rather not have to spill blood if it can be avoided, but that won't stop me from defending myself. If these other denizens you speak of can be so hostile, would you be willing to show us the way out? My automaton friend can be rather goal-oriented if something gets in the way of his objectives. It wouldn't end well for anyone."
Jul 21, 2025 11:45 pm
"I am on a mission to dismantle malfunctioning Wizard creations." R3N-L3 chipped in helpfully.
Jul 22, 2025 7:53 am
"Ah, yes, the way out," Myxlix says. He chews the cookie thoughtfully as he considers Lauretta's request. "Getting into the Sky Pillars is easy, but getting out is a bit trickier, innit? I'll help you get back to your world, but first you must complete some tasks for me. First, bring me the Golden Bird, caged by the Great Mean Man. Second, fetch the mirror from the bottom of Starry Pond. Third, free Old Man Time from the wicked witch. Fourth, Pluck a pink flower from the swimming hill. And fifth, find Ompha, who wanders the woods, and bring a favor from him.

"Do these five things, and I shall reveal the way home for you."
Jul 22, 2025 2:02 pm
Wolfram, whose delight was cut short by the faerie's threat, chuckled at Lauretta's cookie comment.

"Oh, I doubt that, Lauretta. I'm sure your tales have and will raise many eyebrows. I look forward to more." As to leaving this place, it appeared that would not be easy.

"That's a little much, don't you think?" Wolfram asked Myxlyx, realizing that they probably had entered into a negotiation. "What if none of us can swim or dive to the bottom of a body of water?"

"I can submerge myself into many toxic liquids and remain unharmed." R3N-L3 supplied helpfully.
Jul 22, 2025 11:30 pm
So much for negotiating... Wolfram thinks as he stifles a chuckle at the lack of social programming in the clockwork.
Jul 23, 2025 6:50 am
"I'm sure you'll figure something out! You look like the resourceful sort of mortals!" Myxlix says with a grin.
Jul 23, 2025 7:23 am
Tzal had been worried and silent ever since they stumbled upon the fairy place. Ordinary laws of nature don't work in these places, and they are as fickle as the denizens of these places, the fairies themselves. He silently cursed himself for not spending time with Wizard Mordaine, who specialized in fairies and their realms. But whoever knew that they would ever fall into one? Generally, there are signs showing that a fairy door is in the vicinity. Perhaps he was too surprised to see the Preceptor open up to her friends that he missed the signs completely and fell to this place with others? It was too late to ponder the consequences.

He watched the fairy Myxlix and his otherworldy demands about random things. Who is even the Great Mean Man? Or the Old Man Time? It all sounded like elaborate pranks and tricks. He silently bowed to the fairy and then walked out of earshot distance with his friends and spoke, "This all seems jumbled and smells of pranks. Maybe we should find another fairy and talk about their version of the story. Or we could just proceed and ask around about these things and probably find someone more understanding and manageable in their request."
OOC:
Has Tzal heard or read anything about Sky Pillars in any tome?
Jul 23, 2025 3:52 pm
The nonsensical prattle of the faerie left Lauretta with only frustrated curses in her mind. She stepped away with Tzal to prevent herself from getting overly hostile with the creature. The last thing the group needed was to make an enemy of every tricky nuisance in a land they were completely lost in.

"It's all absolute nonsense. Can't trust any fey to give a straight answer, but we're stuck here without a clue otherwise. Other than blindly asking questions and pressing on, the only thing I can think to do is to quietly wrangle one of them and force it to speak plainly. That'd just be a matter of picking our target carefully."
OOC:
Lauretta has her Preceptor of the High One profession, which says the following:

You know all about the Church’s ordinary and magical enemies. You can recall information about cults, heresies, demons, faeries, fiends, spirits, and undead. You also know how to question prisoners to get them to reveal secrets.

Would she be able to tell what kind of faery Myxlix is? Or if any of the things he spoke of sounds familiar?

Jul 23, 2025 5:11 pm
"Yes. I say we find another that might be more willing to give us the information we seek." He was as frustrated as the others in dealing with the whims of an untrustworthy faerie.
Jul 24, 2025 9:26 am
Lauretta recognizes Myxlix as a korrigan. When the faeries fought a war against extinction by the trolls, not one korrigan took up arms. When mortals spread out to claim the lands lost by the faeries, the korrigans living there simply withdrew. Even when threatened by cold steel, korrigans would rather die than take up arms. To be a korrigan is to embrace nonviolence. They cannot even contemplate the alternative. The Faerie Queen cursed the korrigans for their inaction in fighting against the trolls, naming them cowards and fainthearts. If ever they draw blood, even in self-defense, they would become monsters.

As far as faeries go, korrigans are among the most benign you could hope to encounter.
OOC:
Tzal is unfamiliar with the Sky Pillars, and nothing else Myxlix said sounds familiar to Lauretta.
Jul 25, 2025 1:27 am
R3N-L3 simply watched the organics muddle about with trust and emotions and decisions. He had memorized the fae's requests, and had quarantined them under suspicion of deception protocols. That was all one really needed to do, the machine thought to himself.
Jul 25, 2025 6:56 am
Tzal nodded to Wolfram and Lauretta, "Yes, I agree. I can't make any sense of what these things are. Let's proceed to find another one and ask about it."
Jul 25, 2025 7:07 am
Leaving Myxlix, you wander off into the strange enchanted woods. You walk through the forest for an hour or so before you come to a boulder standing in the middle of a clearing. Moss and lichen compete with each other to cover its surface. A door is set into the side of the boulder, sized for a dwarf or a halfling, perhaps.
Jul 25, 2025 1:25 pm
Examining the door keenly, R3N-L3 eased his sword a few inches out of his scabbard...Before knocking politely on the door, with three measured beats.
Jul 25, 2025 1:35 pm
"Hello," Wolfram says as he cocks his head sideways at the rock. "What do we have here? Should I knock on the door?"
Jul 25, 2025 1:50 pm
Tzal looked at the door questioningly. He was not sure if passing through another door would be the right idea again. Looking around, he searched for whether any other fairies were hiding in the vicinity, watching what they were doing. Closing his eyes, he started chanting, and as he opened them, his pupils were completely white and glowed with a bluish hue.
OOC:
Activating Wizard sight; are there any faeries hiding here? Tzal can see auras of magical beings and objects.
Jul 28, 2025 4:29 pm
Recognizing Myxlix as a korrigan relaxed Lauretta's guard at least somewhat. Whatever tricks it may have had in store weren't going to involve an active effort to kill the group. Of course, she relayed this information to her allies as they traveled through the strange land. Coming across the boulder, the Preceptor stood guard as the group interacted with it, wary of any threats. "Perhaps mention one of the people we were told to find or tasks we were to complete? The thing living inside might be more likely to talk back if we say something that interests it."
Jul 29, 2025 8:03 am
Tzal can sense the auras of four faeries inside the boulder. A few moments after R3N-L3 knocks on the door, it opens to reveal a quartet of wizened faces peering out at you. The four faeries look like little old bearded men, all gnarled, bent, and crooked. Their eyes glitter beneath beetling brows, their small mouths crowded with yellow teeth. They each wear tattered clothing, heavy iron boots, and dark red hats.

"Eh? What's this? A metal man?" asks one of them

"And mortals beyond him!" another says with a little grin.

"Oh, my! It's been an age since we've had mortals visit us, hasn't it, me brothers?" the third faerie says.

"You must be hungry! Won't you all come in and have a nosh?" the fourth one says, eyes gleaming.

Lauretta recognizes these faeries as powries. Sometimes called redcaps, these faeries must keep their hats drenched in mortal blood or be destroyed by a curse that afflicts their kind.
Jul 29, 2025 11:30 am
"I am not hungry." R3N-L3 replied in a monotone, before silently offering them a cookie each. Just a neighborhood friendly warform, with one hand on his sword hilt and another hand with cookies.....Who exactly was the redcap in this situation?
Jul 29, 2025 9:46 pm
Lauretta steps up to the creatures, standing alongside R3N-L3. A scornful sneer was barely contained by her desire to escape this dangerous fairy tale of a land. Looking to Wolfram and Tzal, she held up a hand to give them pause and indicate she would handle this.

"We are on a mission of great importance, and the only way we can stop to eat is if our mission is advanced. If you give us information on the Golden Bird, the Great Mean Man, the Starry Pond, Old Man Time, the swimming hill, or Ompha, then we may come in and dine with you, but that will depend on how much information you can give us here. I hope you understand." The monotone of her voice was approaching that of her clockwork companion's, but it was better than immediately slamming her axe into the nearest tricky bastard.

Her offer was all a lie, of course. The Preceptor's eyes stabbed down at the nearest of the creatures, looking to spot any falsehoods it spoke for what they were. Once she got the information she was looking for, she'd unleash judgment upon them.
OOC:
Lauretta is using her Dire Attention talent on one of the redcaps. Once it seems like they've said all they have to say, she will immediately blindside them with her Castigation talent.

The redcaps scowl at the offered cookies. When Lauretta focuses her dire attention on one of them, he hisses and snarls instead of answering her questions. "Bah! Why waste time bandying words with a keen lass like you? We just be needin' your blood to keep our caps moist!"

The four faeries reach to the long, wickedly sharp razors tucked into their belts, their faces twisted into eager sneers!
OOC:
Anybody who wishes to take the initiative may do so and act now!
Jul 30, 2025 1:50 pm
"I regret to inform you that I have no blood. Why are cookies not a suitable alternative?" R3N-L3 asked in a faintly curious tone, not appearing put off by the drawing of blades.
OOC:
Not taking init since R3N-L3 is a hunk of metal meant to blunt blades.
Jul 30, 2025 1:53 pm
"As I was well aware, powrie scum! Face the wrath of the High One!"

Now clutched in Lauretta's fist, the silver skull of flames that rested on a chain on her neck began to glow. As orange light emanated from the amulet, it began to emit smoke between the gaps of her fingers. It did not burn her, but the air around the redcaps grew hot. Flames erupted around them, trying to cling to the devilish faeries.
OOC:
Taking the initiative and using her action to use Castigation. As faeries, they all have a bane, though one has 2 banes since he is already Cursed by Dire Attention. That one is also Vulnerable. Edit: Wow. These redcaps are very lucky lmao. One of them is cursed and weakened (luck ends both).

Lauretta only manages to weaken one of the powries with her castigation. Tzal blasts another one with acid before Wolfram moves in with and slices it with his dagger, setting it ablaze!

The burning faerie shrieks in anger and attacks Wolfram with his razor, scoring a horrid cut! As blood pours from the deep wound it soaks the powrie's cap, healing him. A second redcap moves in and delivers another horrible wound that takes the rogue down! The other two faeries rush up to attack Lauretta. One scores a devastating slice, but the last one fails to get past her armor.
OOC:
Horrid Cut: The powrie makes a Razor attack and rolls an additional d20, using the highest result. On a success, the target takes an extra 2d6 damage. Once the powrie uses this talent, it loses access to it (luck ends).

Drench the Cap: If a flesh-and-blood target takes 10 damage or more, the powrie heals 1d6 damage.

Barring any reactions from R3N-L3, Wolfram takes a total of 41 damage which makes him incapacitated. Lauretta takes 21 damage.

@Lcythas R3N-L3 may act now before the round ends.

As the Redcaps lunged forward, so did R3N-L3, dropping the culinary gift he had been offering in favor of unsheathing his sword in a glittering arc, which was coated in a strange grey flame. Two of the Redcaps attacking Wolfram found their daggers grating with a screech of steel against the warform, before R3N-L3 spun around with a scream of gears to slam his shield against the third redcap's blade, narrowly deflecting it from Lauretta.

"Operational parameters exceeded." R3N-L3 grated out, an errant spark and burst of steam emanating from his helmet. Something inside him ground to a shuddering stop, as the sapphire light faded from his helm's eye sockets.
OOC:
Using his Reactions to shield all three attacks, which means he does no actions. However, since his sword imposes 1 Bane to attacks, that actually means that none of the attacks get through his beefy 21 defense! He does suffer the penalty for Grind the Gears, though, so R3N-L3 is now a very large statue until someone spends an action to reboot him

Aug 4, 2025 6:52 pm
It was easy to visualize the threat that the wretched faeries and their deadly cutters posed after seeing scrapes they left on R3N-L3's metal form. She was certain Wolfram would have been laying in a pool of his own blood. Lauretta gritted her teeth, angry and focusing her glare at one of the redcaps that had escaped the flames from earlier. Her great axe swung with supernatural force as the Preceptor tried to cleave the creature in twain.

Lauretta's axe flashes as she smites the most wounded of the powries, slicing the gnarled old man in half! Wolfram slices another one with his flaming dagger, setting it on fire! Tzal moves quickly to turn R3N-L3's key and reactivate the clockwork.

Recognizing Lauretta as the biggest threat, the three remaining redcaps circle her and lash out with their razors.
OOC:
Barring reactions, Lauretta will take 9, 29, and 24 damage from 3 separate attacks. @Lcythas may act.

Smashing his blade down, R3N-L3 batted away the redcap blade he judged would deal Lauretta the most damage, before slamming himself bodily into the fray against the nearest redcap.

"You believe that friend Lauretta is the greatest threat. That is erroneous. You cannot kill me. Therefore, I am the greatest threat." He lectured the redcaps calmly as he struck out with a flickering blow at the one whose blade he'd parried.
OOC:
17 damage if not a crit, 22 if it is! R3N-L3's blocking the 29 damage blow

Just as she looked up from the bisected faerie, Lauretta stared down the other three wretches coming for vengeance. Their number, diminutive size, surprising quickness left her guard completely ineffective. The razors found gaps in her armor, cutting through the vestments and flesh in search of bone. One of them was stopped by R3N-L3, but her blood still poured from the deep gashes she received. It was enough to wonder how the Preceptor was still managing to stand. In truth? Just barely. Her great axe swung through the air alongside her roar at one of her two attackers. The business with the third and the clockwork had completely escaped her notice.

OOC:
R3N-L3 can't take the initiative, ofc, so I think we're just waiting on Wolfram?

Sorry, I think I am getting lost sometimes with the GP notification issues.
Using Flame Kiss again.
Wolfram's enchanted dagger had worked well for him so far. He attacks one of the two remaining Fairies, the flame tip a fiery threat, as he tries not to let his rage get the better of him. He was worried about Lauretta's blood loss and wanted to put a quick end to this battle.

Tzal blasts one of the remaining redcaps with acid, then Lauretta and Wolfram team up to cut it down! Only one foe remains, shrieking in rage as he slashes at Lauretta.

Moving forward in a surprisingly nimble blur, R3N-L3's armor whined as he blocked the blow meant for Lauretta, sending sparks flying from his frame. The keen blade slid into R3N-Le's inner workings...And got stuck there.

The large, imposing warform took a long moment to inspect the wound he had suffered, oil trickling down his side, before shrugging philosophically and raising his blade for an executioner's strike.

"You did not accept my advice. Please die." He said calmly.
OOC:
Sadly, even with bane, that got through R3N-L3's 21 defense! Luckily, he's hardly bothered by 11 damage, and he'll swing back with 15 damage if he hits normally, 24 if crit.
