Not Today, Death!

Arne grunts in Salvia’s direction, who turns and hears this last bit. She smiles once more at the woman and turns to the man, saying, "You will show us. Now."

"You know what they say about curiosity," Kade says. "Talking statues should generally be dealt with by smashing."
Sep 23, 2025 8:15 pm
Hermann couldn’t help but agree with Kade, however indelicate the practice.

"Pray this body is still there!" Hermann says, his voice full of menace and his hand resting on the hilt of his blade.
Sep 24, 2025 12:23 pm
"Uh, y-yeah, s-sure. Of c-course! Th-this way." The unkempt and wild-eyed man leads you down narrower and dirtier streets into a worse section of town. Eventually he stops in front of one that is larger but in no less better condition than its neighbors. The obvious flophouse was once a fine manor, now fallen on hard times. Rotting, mildew-stained plaster has crumbled away to show cracked bricks. The damp roof
sags, and several windows have been boarded up. An old woman sits on a metal chair out front, drinking something foul from a tin cup and chewing on a cheroot.

"H-he was in a room h-here," he says in a low voice, trying not to be overheard by the woman.

Overheard or not, the woman stares at you with suspicion and spits a gob of something onto the warped wooden porch. "Wot're youse all starin' at den?" she challenges.
Sep 24, 2025 2:33 pm
"What we are staring at is none of your concern." Hermann says coolly.

"If we have need, you shall be called upon." he follows on, hoping to dissuade this rubber-necker from intervening all that much.

They had with them the man who had laid eyes on the body, after all!
Sep 24, 2025 4:16 pm
Salvia looks to Hermann and nods her head forward, indicating they should go forward and leave the old woman behind. She looks to the old woman and says, "Be a dear, won’t you, and cease your prattling on. Arne? Be nice." salvia then proceeds to ignore the woman and walk in.

Arne allows himself the smallest of eye rolls and pulls a silver coin from his pocket and tosses it at the woman. He then strides after his Lady.
Sep 25, 2025 11:58 am
The lady bars the way with a walking cane. "This here be ma property. That makes it ma business. If ya don' be respectin' edlers, ya best be respectin' property rights! Now then, what be ya business?" The woman spits out another disgusting wad of something slimy onto the porch between Salvia and Arne's feet.
Sep 25, 2025 4:02 pm
Salvia stops, looks down at the woman, and takes a deep breath. Arne looks at Salvia with an expression of deep concern—not for Salvia’s well-being, but for the old woman’s. Arne seems ready to jump in to calm or redirect her if she loses her temper.

Fortunately, Salvia keeps her cool this time. She adopts a phony, condescending smile and says, "Well, madam, there is a dead body rotting away in one of your rooms. Now, the owners of a property usually must pay for the removal of such problems. Of course, the local constabulary can also be notified and they will come around with many, many questions. Alternatively, we can go in and remove it for you, free of charge. Indeed, we may be willing to pay you a modest sum for your trouble. Very well?"
Sep 25, 2025 6:50 pm
Hermann keeps a cool gaze on the old woman, waiting for any trickery.

It was clear that the Inquisitor was a good influence on Salvia. Perhaps she could be of service to the Inquisition before long, if her temper kept up!

Kade sighs at the old crone butting in, but remain silent in the background. His words hasn't really made any situation better today, so he knows his place is to stand and look scary.
Sep 27, 2025 1:19 am
The woman is quiet for a moment. "Dead body, says you. I ain't seen no dead body. And how'd you'se know about it anyway? Mighty large nose ya have, pokin' around in people's bizness. How'se about I go take a peek with the little bossy missy? If ya speak true, we can talk more about how much fer disposal and suchnot."
Sep 27, 2025 6:43 am
Salvia looks at her companions to see if there are any protests. If there are not, she nods in assent and replies to the woman, saying, "Very well, madam. Let us proceed."
Sep 27, 2025 12:46 pm
Perhaps not, after all… Hermann laments then, given Salvia’s willingness to be led into a trap.

"We will be waiting. Take too long and see what awaits you!" he says.
Sep 27, 2025 1:36 pm
The unkempt man says, "The r-room in the b-back on the f-first f-floor, uh, l-left side."

The elderly woman on the porch looks at him suspiciously and then spits a final gob on the unknown substance before standing up with an annoyed sigh. "Alright, let's git." She unlocks the front door with a large iron key on an equally large iron key ring and leads the way inside. The interior is dark from shuttered windows and the air is stale. The house was large and once nice but fallen into disrepair. The front entrance leads into a hallway with a kitchen at the far end, and six doors--three on each side--which seem to be the rented rooms. The woman stomps with her cane to the last door on the left and unlocks it. The door creaks open.

The boarded up window in this room has been broken inward, pieces of it all over the floor. Something destroyed the furnishings—the remains of a bed, a cheap dresser, and broken gear lie scattered throughout, much of it bloodstained. The body of a man lies among the smashed bed. He seems oddly crushed, many of his limbs twisted in odd ways, the bones crushed. Splotches of dried mud cover the body and parts of the room.

The crotchety woman surveys the room. "Well he wasn't gettin' his deposit back anyway. Now about tha' payment..."
Sep 27, 2025 9:27 pm
Salvia ignores the woman, assuming one of the others will deal with her, and enters the room. She relies on her elven Keen Sight, coupled with her Wizard Sight, to look for clues, both magical and mundane.
Sep 29, 2025 12:10 pm
Salvia sees a faint glow coming from somewhere under the floor near the destroyed bed. No other magic is present. The most striking mundane clues are the strange patches and splotches of mud everywhere, the amount of destruction for such a small room, and the injuries to the body. It seems like something large and with superhuman strength is behind this.

The old woman returns back to the porch and nods at the others. "Yeah, well, the sassy lass was right. Git on in and take a peek, quick-like. And I'm gonna need that payment promised. The room is hellfire wrecked!"
Sep 29, 2025 1:12 pm
Salvia enters carefully, stepping over the mud daintily. She surveys the mud splotches: footprints? Or was it thrown? She looks at the body: smashed by large fists? Finally she moves to the area of floor and gestures to Arne, who nods and begins to pull up floorboards.

Hermann smuggles away the knife he took from the girl. He had pulled it free and held it hidden, in case he had cause to rush through the house upon Salvia’s screaming.

He ignores the issue of money, having parted with a good deal of coin to secure the knife. He was no stranger to greasing a palm, however unhappily but this woman had rubbed him up the wrong way.

"Patience." is all he remarks as he strides into the house.
OOC:
I think I’ve got one more Nat 20 for this adventure. Might be a good place to blow it!

Kade pulls out a silver coin with a sigh he hands it to the old woman.
Oct 2, 2025 10:23 am
The woman harrumphs but accepts the coin.

Inside Arne pulls up a loose floorboard that reveals a cavity that contains a leather pouch of various gemstones, a short sword that glows with magic to Salvia's eyes, two vials of the same pink-grey dust found on the guards at Groverbandy's estate, a potion, and a scrap of paper with the name Crenus Crumble written in charcoal.
