Not Today, Death!

Hermann, despite a cool exterior, is almost too stunned to speak. The knife should have put him in two pieces, given what it had done to the gate.

He is brought back to the moment when asked if he finds the terms agreeable, and he drops the girl in an instant.

"Yes, yes! Quite agreeable!" he says, clearing his throat.

Perhaps the blade only worked on non-organic matter?…

The girl looks at the money suspiciously. Who would give such money to a street pickpocket like her? You can read the thought on her face. But surrounded as she is she doesn't have much choice and eventually sags.

"It lets me cut through hard things like they were soft, but not soft things things very well. I stole it from an old, dirty, ugly man. He was too busy talking to a small statue to pay much attention, so I stole the knife. It's his fault for not paying attention!"
Sep 8, 2025 3:32 pm
Salvia smiles and says, "Just as I thought! The man from whom you stole this is the one we seek. Where is he, my dear? Tell us and you can keep the coin and go. And..." She pulls a small stiff piece of paper from her pocket with writing upon it and hands it to her. She continues, saying, "...if you'd like to make more coin in the future running errands and acting as a courier for me -- easy work that pays well, if you're reliable -- come to that address."

The card reads:
The Lady Salvia, of the Evensong Elves
Arcanist, Occultist, and Adventurer Extraordinaire
Contact via Arne Arneson, at:
4 Feldspar Lane, in the stone tower at the edge of town

"Show us where you last saw this ugly man," Winter urges the girl.
Sep 9, 2025 8:19 pm
How quick the others were to believe the first story to fall out of the girl’s mouth. They had clearly never had to interrogate the real truth out of someone. All sorts of fanciful tales came before the final truth!

Kade shrugs and remains silent. He already scared the poor girl once, he'd rather not do it again, he could already feel his knee starting to pound from running once on the hard cobblestones.
Sep 10, 2025 12:45 pm
The girl seems uncomfortable for a moment. "I can, but it was a few hours ago. He might not still be there. But I will take you if that's what you want. Do I still get the money if he's not there?" With either answer, the girl has no choice and leads the party onwards. She takes you down cramped alleys and dirty streets, heading to the less affluent part of town. After about twenty minutes the girl takes you to an alley that looks like any other and stops. "He was here. He had some kind of stone statue he was talking to. I asked for some change and he didn't answer, so that's when I took the knife. I don't think he noticed so-"

A sudden sharp scream rings out. It sounds as if it came from no more than half a dozen streets away, maybe less. The scream is filled with raw fear and pain.

2.5 hours have now elapsed.
Sep 10, 2025 5:41 pm
Salvia nods at the girl's question and follows along. Once there, she listens and looks around, wondering if the man's home is nearby. When she hears the scream, however, she tosses the coin she had promised to the girl and looks to Arne, saying, "I suspect the man has been corrupted by the statue and will soon be a public menace. Let us investigate, yes?" She heads in the direction of the scream.
Sep 11, 2025 9:00 am
"We may have more questions," Kade says and takes out another coin. "And more coins if we do. Will we find you somewhere if we need to?"

He pockets the coin again, he don't trust her enough to pay for more before they have the time to question her.

Once he has an answer he'll head in the direction of the scream.
Sep 11, 2025 3:37 pm
"The knife…" Hermann says, hand outstretched towards the young girl. He can only tarry a moment, before he has to be off after the others and towards the scream.
Sep 14, 2025 1:56 am
The girl says, "Nobody ever wants to find me for a good reason. I don't want to be found." Her expression turns indignant when Kade pockets the coin that was nearly hers. When Hermann asks for the dagger, she clings tighter, then points her chin at Kade, clearly indicating she wants the coin in exchange for the dagger.

Two streets away, a bloodied woman comes stumbling out of another alley. Her dress is cut in several places and bloodstains are spreading through the fabric. Her eyes are wild, hair is tousled. She has defensive cuts on her hands as well. She spies Silvia and limps towards her. "Help! Please!" Behind her in the shadows of the alley you can see the outline of a man wielding a knife. He pauses, heaving with labored breathing.

Seeing the woman, Salvia shouts, "This way, dear! Arne, take care of her." She peers into the murky alley, her keen elven eyes cutting through the darkness. As a reaction to seeing the figure in the alley, her Wizard Sight activates as well. She speaks to the figure now in a teasing voice, saying, "I'll ask you to stay put, if you don't mind." She quickly gestures with one hand in a strange configuration while reaching down to touch the grimoire attached to her belt with the other. The book suddenly explodes in shadow, which travels up her arm and out of her other hand, forming three vile tentacles that slither through the alley, grabbing at the man before her. If they succeed in grabbing him, they squeeze him, injuring him and preventing him from fleeing.

Once the tentacles do their work, she reaches her hand up, grabs a swath of shadow from the dim light of the alley around her, and swings it in front of her body like covering herself in a blanket. The effect of wrapping herself in this dark mantle is to become entirely invisible for a short time.
OOC:
Elves have Keen Vision, which "reduces the degree of obscurement by one step, to a minimum of no obscurement." She is using Wizard Sight as well.

She also has the benefit of Combat Precognition.

Hermann slides some fingers into his own coin purse, when it is just he and the girl remaining. He fishes out what must surely be twenty silver, and lets it plop into a pile in front of the girl.

He gets down on his haunches, and holds out a hand for the dagger again! Time was of the essence, but the dagger was almost invaluable right now.

With your keen vision and wizard's sight, you can see the man matches the description the urchin girl gave. The man is also holding a statue that radiates a demonic aura. Unfortunately when your tentacles seize the man and begin squeezing him, he drops the statue. It smashes upon the ground. There's a flash of anti-light, like negative lightning that turns the world pitch black for a heartbeat before disappearing. When you can see again, there is a large barbed demon nearly twelve feet tall looming next to your tentacles. A shadowy aura surrounds the demon, seeming to absorb the light around it. It shrieks directly at you, its purple glowing eyes staring right at you through your invisibility. Yet it takes time to claw at two of your tentacles, first. With ease, it's sharp claws tear through the magical tentacles, splattering magical residue onto the cobbled streets.

OOC:
Ok, so this will be a tough fight maybe lol. Everyone who hasn't acted yet is up. Starting next turn, GM goes first, but players can declare if they want to use their reaction to go before me. Since this is Pbp and we have plenty of time, let me know before the next round starts if you are planning to use your reaction to go first so we don't have to wait.

The girl's eyes go wide at the coins. She hands over the dagger and quickly scoops up the coins. In the flash of a magician's trick, the coins disappear somewhere inside her rags and she's off down the street, bare feet slapping against the stone street.

Winter curses under her breath when the fiend appears. She quickly draws her bow and fires an arrow at it!
OOC:
Not sure if this counts as taking the initiative in the first round of combat or not. If so, I add +10 to the attack roll for a total of 23 thanks to my First Strike talent. It also might trigger my Outmaneuver talent.

To save time, I'll say the demon's defense is 15, imposes a bane against any magic attacks, and is immune to most conditions.

OOC:
Yes you can take the initiative this turn if you want. That will be a hit then. Sadly demons are immune to confused.

I assume Salvia's spell before was my action this round? Or is this a new round of combat?

I’m assuming that Hermann will enter in on round 2?

Still the same round. Hermann and Kade can get there in the same round. Otherwise it might be a bloodbath lol.
