Hermann had once seen a team of witch hunters dispatch a man of similar size and build. Gods help them if the man turned violent.

"It concerns the robbery, and thereafter acquiring by persons unknown, of some very powerful and expensive magical artifacts!" he says with an even tone.

Salvia nods and adds, "Oh, and do mention that I have some insight into the Philosopher's Stone that he might value."

Winter kneels down to examine the ground around the gate and back door for tracks.

Winter finds a set of small footprints that belong to a child leading into the shop. No return tracks are evident.

CRENUS CRUMBLE'S HOUSE

The man is silent for a moment. "Who has been robbed? The only person who had information regarding the Philosopher's Stone is Mr. Goverbandy."

The man implicated himself with his own ‘guess.’

"Suppose it was Goverbandy. Would you know the whereabouts of his possessions?" Hermann says, stepping forward to get a really good eye on the man.

Kade follows Winter at a short distance, not trusting that his stealth can match.

Winter silently sneaks into the building. The interior is dark, the shutters are all down and it appears the shop is closed for business this day. The shop is clearly a jewelers, with walls of wooden storage shelves, each for a different precious metal or stone. A girl somewhere between ten and fifteen years old is picking through small wooden chests, occasionally pilfering expensive rings, necklaces, earrings, and diadems. Not many it appears, not enough to be easily noticed by the owner. Winter doesn't have much time to study the scene before Kade enters and knocks over the coat rack just inside the back door. The noise is almost deafening in the silence of the closed shop. The young girl immediately stiffens in surprise, then whips out a dagger, running for the front of the shop.

CRENUS CRUMBLE'S HOUSE

The large man cocks his head. "Well...in his possession, of course. Wait one moment, I will inform Mr. Crumble about your reason for coming." The man walks back to the house and is absent for a few short minutes before returning. He opens the gate and waves you inside before closing it behind you.

"Mr. Crumble is making time for you. Keep in mind he is very busy and doesn't enjoy his time being wasted. Make your story short and to the point. No dancing around with words."

You enter and the servant takes you to a parlor just off the front entrance way. The house is sparse and neglected but well-appointed with select furnishings. Crenus Crumble enters a few moments later. He is a sight to behold. The man has ugly boils all over his face and scalp. Scaly patches of dead skin cover his hands and arms. His eyes have yellowish sclera, and his lips bleed. He wears expensive clothing, however, with rings on his fingers and a gold chain around his neck. He gives a hacking cough as he shuffles to a seat near a window and waves at you to sit.

"Now then," he croaks, "What is it you have come to tell me?"

Kade grimaces as his broad shoulders hits the coat rack. When he sees the girl he tries to move to the front of the shop, hoping to cut off her avenue of escape.

Hermann would like little more than to jump straight to the point with this servant. A man of his position didn’t take orders from a lowly butler.

It’s the sight of the ugly man that stops him in his tracks. A foul sight, and a fouler odor, Hermann supposed. He wasn’t close enough to know just yet.

"Your man has given you all of the pertinent details. You met with us because you know something."

To the point…

Salvia chuckles uncomfortably and adds, "Ah, what my companion here means to say is, Thank you for seeing us! We know you are very busy with your research. We were wondering if you might know the identity of a thief who broke into Mr. Goverbandy's estate recently, using both magic and alchemy, to steal several valuable magical artifacts. A friend suggested you might be a good person to speak to, since you are new in town and have expressed an interest in some of the materials that were stolen. Might you know anything about the robbery, the robber, or the whereabouts of the stolen items? If it's compensation you require, I am sure we could come to an arrangement..."

Salvia very carefully examines both the thug's and Crumble's. feet, trying to see if they might match the footprints she examined back in the estate.

"Wait! We're not here to hurt you!" Winter calls out to the girl. She springs into action, her hooves swiftly carrying her to the front of the shop ahead of the fleeing girl. She holds her hands up to try to forestall violence.
OOC:
Winter uses the run action combined with her Fleet-footed talent. That should give her plenty of speed advantage on the girl, but let me know if you'd like me to make a roll.

THE JEWELER'S SHOP

The girl is faster than Kade but can't match the faun's deer-like legs in speed or power. Winter skids to a halt, hooves scraping the wooden floor. The girl pulls out a knife. It has an 18-inch straight, double-edged blade with a black handle capped with an iron spike. It wavers in her grasp, clearly heavy for such a skinny child. She doesn't say anything, but her wild eyes dart around in panic. She edges sideways towards a wall while keeping the knife in front of her.

CRENUS CRUMBLE'S HOUSE

The man gives a throaty and phlegm-rattling chuckle. "On the contrary, I met with you because I think you know something. Mors, Crumble nods towards his burly manservant, "Has only said you mentioned Mr. Goverbandy and the Philosopher's Stone. If what you say is true and Goverbandy has been robbed, then this is tragic news indeed. I'm afraid I know nothing of the robbery. I did seek out Goverbandy in the past and offered to purchase a very important book from him, but he declined. I have no interest in whatever other trinkets Goverbandy possessed. If I knew where the stolen items were you had better believe I'd be trying to acquire that book instead of meeting with you. But since you mentioned compensation, maybe it is I who should offer. If you find Goverbandy's stolen items, I will pay you handsomely for the book. You may return any other stolen items to the man, I only desire the book. What do you say?"

Bad enough that the inquisitor was in one wealthy benefactors pocket for the night, now there was a second vying for his services.

"All of this is theoretical so long as we don’t know the location of the book, or the name of its thief." Hermann says, in what he thinks is a deft side step amongst present company.
Aug 26, 2025 1:32 am
Salvia nods in agreement with Hermann, though she adds, "Indeed, my companion is correct. But perhaps you might help to rectify that situation. I know you to be an expert on matters alchemical... perhaps you are familiar with the methods our thief used?" She describes I some detail the alchemical evidence she had examined so closely back at Goverbandy's, hoping this alchemist might be able to give them a clue on where to look next!

"I have read about such things. Far beyond my capabilities, unfortunately, but what I lack in skill I make up for in knowledge. The oil is known as 'steel bane', an oil that exponentially speeds up the oxidation of certain metals causing them to rust in a matter of moments. The powder is most likely 'chorian dust', an anesthetic used to put its victims to sleep and numbs all feeling until it wears off. Its made from an exotic species of coral and thus quite expensive. Not something an average thief would use, I wouldn't think. If it's a thief you are looking for, I would suggest Pyta Ypta who runs the Gilded Lily. That fiend knows everything about black deeds in this city I've heard."

"I have fought men thrice your size on the battlefield," Kade says sternly. "Though I had hoped to leave those days behind me. How about you put that blade down and we talk. I really don't want to hurt anyone. And by the way your carrying it your more likely to hurt yourself than anyone else!"

Salvia nods and looks at Hermann, with an expression that says, is there anything else, or are we finished here?

Meanwhile, Arne stands nearer to Salvia than usual, keeping eyes on the large butler/guard.

Hermann leans in close to speak into Salvia’s ear.

"That is where our two companions went searching…"

His tone is flat, though he wondered if the duo were face down in the dirt by now, facing off against such a talented foe.
