IC Story Thread: Chapter 1, Gamorr - the Diplomats

Cevron tries his ploy of being a bit loud without seeming to intend to be disruptive and it largely works! While after the first few times, the Gamorreans do begin to become uncomfortable with it, they don't get upset or even aggressively silence him. They do make quieting gestures and start to cut him off when his words drag on - and he can sense he's on the edge of social acceptability, but... he gets away without notice for now.
OOC:
I will use the Threats to Strain you 2.
Meanwhile, Kolibri has sent his rawwk into the air to see what can be seen through the eyes of his bonded animal-friend... He quickly finds that the canopy is too thick from above for the scouting to be productive via that method, and so the flight must be made lower - within the branches that hold up the leafy ceiling overhead.
OOC:
Going to make a kind of "luck roll" to see what happens to be in the direction the rawwl first flies...

Depending on what that roll yields (i.e. if it's anything other than a net-failure), you'll need to put together some sort of skill check for the scouting.
...

Back closer to the Citadel, Lucien goes to watch the pod-races.

The Gamorreans have an entire complex devoted to the sport. It has stadium seating for many thousands of observers which line the starting point (which is also the finish line), it has service bays for the racers and their pods, and towering above it all is an indoor area with further observational seating, as well as holo-screens to broadcast the entire race, and an area for gambling.

As Lucien enters the complex grounds, he's of course rather quickly recognized as a Jedi and while many just stare in wonderment, a small group of 3 Gamorreans approach him, apparently eager to interact with the odd intergalactic traveler.

They grunt and squeal excited introductions, and - if his mission primer did him any service - he believes they offer him food and drink (although they have none on their persons).

OOC:
@crazybirdman no net Success initially here, so he finds no quizzer yet... but there is Advantage.

How would you like to spend it? There are the mechanical options (recover strain, add a Boost to next allied check), or you could get some sort of narrative boon (I have something in mind, tho you could propose your own as well).
Dec 2, 2025 10:08 pm
I guess I'm as worthy a sight as the racers, Lucien noted the attention. He searched within the Force trying to shelter himself from the eyes, and to make himself feel less observed among the other beings, but his mastery simply isn't there. At least he can feel a current of least resistance.

He's on reconnaissance as much as he's here to just take in the sights and the sounds among the crowds, and there is probably a strategy and method among the madness, but first he had to deal with the Gammoreans that had approached him and came with tidings of offering food and drink.

Well, I'm here to be a good sport, a diplomat, and learn. What's the saying? When in Coruscant...

He gestured to the Gammoreans in a gesture of acceptance.

"Food and drink? Yes, I'll come take a sample of what you may have," he said kindly to the excited trio, hoping to allay any overeagerness that might turn into a crowd rush.

Perhaps taking in some of the more casual fare offered at the track would steel his stomach for the more formal affairs later.

I'm thinking that the rawwk would have to use an coordination check to safely fly through the canopy, and the advantage means the little guy sees a path that looks clear (granting it a boost die)
Dec 3, 2025 9:10 am
Cevron realizes he's getting on their new companions bad side, so tries to back down a little for now. He'll stay in the back, letting the locals lead the way.

OOC:
So, you don't get to pick what check the Boost applies to if you're using it for the mechanical Boost - or rather, it requires 2 net Advantage to get to choose who it goes to. With 1, it just goes to the next allied check.

That said, seems like understanding the Quizzers is probably of utmost importance to both of your future involvement/actions, so let's see if we can resolve that issue...

Please put together a narrative and a pool to try to find some Quizzers. It can use the Rawwk's stats, if physical, or your stats, if mental. And if mental, you can use whomever's relevant skill is highest between the two of you.

Athletics/Coordination (really just digging in and getting deep into the foliage)? Survival? X enology? Perception? Something else?

Also, since the Gamorreans have taken you to a place where they know/expect to find some, add a Boost to the check - in addition to the one from the luck roll.
Individual Gamorreans begin breaking off from your main group, to set and monitor traps, to start using "calls" (the metallic jingling cans), while others continue on to stalk and look for roosts.

...

At the pod races, the Gamorreans take Lucien up into the structure which towers over the pod race starting/finish line, which also towers above all the surrounding landscape and structures, with the exception of the Citadel (whose central keep is the taller).
OOC:
@PlebeianG I don't know if you read the IC thread to catch this, but you do not have your Lightsaber at this time. One of the other Jedi used their Lightsaber to kill a Gamorrean during the Dissident attack, and an opposed Gamprrean faction used that to demand that you all be disarmed as a consequence.

Also, you can choose to have some Clone Troopers accompanying you, if you would like. In fact there are definitely some that come along with you, unless you specifically command them to not come with you...
The three chatter at you in their grunts and squeals - largely too fast and informal for you to fully pick up on the meaning of - but they also make gestures, mimicking lightsaber swings and Force thrusts and things as you all walk.

Perhaps they're asking you to demonstrate? Our perhaps they're just enacting the legends they've heard?

Eventually you arrive at the observation deck which over-looks the horizon, and has holo-screens everywhere you look to broadcast the race (there is one that has already begun), as well as bookees for gambling (mostly droids), and several cantina bars serving food and drink.

There are Gamorrean people - most clearly citizens, some either guards or military or otherwise of their warrior-class - everywhere.

The gamorreans head to one of the cantina bars and start ordering.
OOC:
You can make a Xenology check - PPK (P = purple, K = a black die) to try to pick up on what they're saying and ordering, or add another P to try to understand it all.

In addition to whatever else you might want to say or do ofc
Dec 5, 2025 2:29 am
OOC:
Oh yeah, will pass a boost die to the next check then.
Kolibri ask his the rawwk to return. He breaks his bond to talk to Cevron; Couldn't get close enough to see anything. Through the rawwks eyes, I mean. We are getting exceedingly close, and still have no idea what we are dealing with. What's our next move?"
Dec 7, 2025 5:20 pm
Lucien opened his robes and patted at his belt spreading his hands apologetically at the presumably excited Gammoreans, but for show, he somewhat mimicked their pantomime, but put more thought into it, getting into a Niman state of mind and showing off stance and some of the general maneuvers he knew even if his hands were empty, so at the least he could put on a little show of his training to leave the onlookers a little bit sated, before he moved on.

For a people suspicious of Jedi, so far these ones are sold by the mystique of the action. I suppose if they thought I was penetrating their minds with the Force, they would think differently.

Lucien settled down near a holo-screen, and space with a good vantage point over the race so he could observe, and kept an eye on the Gammoreans going over to the cantina bar to order, trying to take it all in, and figure out what he might have coming his way.

Cevron shrugs. "Play it by ear," Cevron says, he plays it off, but he's got a sinking feeling in his stomach. "Not much we can do until we have more information, and worrying for nothing wastes energy."

...

@PlebeianG let's take a moment to review the mechanics here.

Every roll and skill check has a "positive"/active side of a pool - this is your Characteristic combined with your Skill, as described in the book and will consist of Greens or Yellows or both, as well as possibly Blues.

And every check also has a "negative"/the difficulty side of the pool. These are determined by me or creature stats. And will consist of People's or Reds or both, as well as blacKs.

So what I directed you on (PPK) was "my half" the difficulty side of the pool.

You need to look at your character sheet and assemble your side/the active side of the pool, based on your Characteristic and Skill, as described in the book.

So please go ahead and add that portion of the pool to your post.

OOC:
I didn't miss it, i wanted to narratively loop Cevron in in case they had any ideas. I'd still like the rawwk to try and fly under the canopy on it's return. guessing on the difficulty of the check, as always GM can add or remove dice if needed
Kolibri nods as he responds to Cevron. "I'll have the rawwk take a closer look as it returns. Be right with you." and he reconnects the bond with his pet. He decides the risk of entering the canopy is worth the information that might be gained. The rawwk dives, and deftly enters into foliage awning

Okay, I apologize if I discouraged you from making a check/rolling. I think I got a little overzealous trying to keep us all on the same page RE: the "procedure"/rules for narrative symbols/read into your post too much.
A couple Gamorreans nearby are at first confused but also fascinated by Kolibri's use of his animal companion.

Having a hunting-beast? They get.

But as he uses the Force to see through the eyes of the rawwk, it becomes obvious that he goes "somewhere else" for a time. Cevron can see the Gamorreans jostle each other and gesture at the Bothan, muttering in slurring grunts to each other as they parse what they think is going on, as their new comrade is mentally displaced, and his eyes flicker, seeing things they cannot see.

To Kolibri, he is navigating the canopy of the fungi-laden jungle. The rawwk deftly scrambling, leaping, and gliding through open spaces in the leafy branches. After some time he catches sight of something through the branches, and due to the rawwks animalian appearance, he is able to get close enough to see some Quizzers.

They are strange looking creatures...
https://i.imgur.com/gh3duOq.png
Reptilian in appearance, at first, he soon realizes though that they are mammalian. You observe them being very social - nesting and congregating nearby each other, grooming each other, chasing each other in apparent play or perhaps very localized territoriality, mature specimen sharing food with young. They communicate through various chirps, barks, and howls, and are intelligent enough at least to use the branches they sit on to smash open fruits or nuts and craft large nests for themselves our of twigs and leaves and things.

And you also know they're apparently attracted to shiny things, based on the gamorrean hunting tactic.

Then... after some time of sitting and observing the quizzers, the rawwk narrowly avoids a strike from a snake-like creature in the tree! Sending it fleeing in panic through the canopy!

The scuffle draws the attention of the quizzers who begin hooting raucously and pelting the reptile with sticks and partially eaten fruits, causing it to leave the area.

The rawwk takes some minor bumps and bruises in it's hurried retreat, but is ultimately able to return to you safely.
OOC:
Using the Threat to Strain the rawwk. However as a Minion-level creature it doesn't have a Strain Threshold and takes this as Wounds.

I have a 3 in Intellect but a 0 in Xenology, so I have no idea what I'm supposed to roll. 3 green? I'm not sure how the bottom part works out.

Kolibri snaps out of his trance in time to coddle the rawwk when it returns. To the gawking Gammoreans he absent-mindedly points in the direction the quizzers he 'saw' were. He tells Cevron all the rawwk experienced. "I can't say for certain if they are sentient, but I also can't say if they deserved to be slaughtered. Let's not do anything to upset the mission just yet." He says with a furrowed brow.
Dec 11, 2025 9:21 pm
OOC:
It's hard to communicate through in-world analogues, cuz there just aren't too many common frames of reference, but I think Kolibri would understand them to be equivalent to the level of intelligence that IRL is something like a lesser primate or a monkey.

Capable of experiencing pain, fear, and other emotions, and smart enough to use simple tools, but probably short of being capable of recognizing itself in a mirror as itself (and not separate creature).

In the Star Wars universe, I think it's mentioned that quizzer are related to lizard-monkeys (i.e. Salacious Crumb). Though I get the impression that SeƱior Crumb is a bit more intelligent than these things are generally represented as, so... if there are other distinctions that would help you make a decision, let me know what those are, and I can determine if you would have been able to diagnose that.

Hopefully that helps, and...

Do with that info what you will.
Dec 11, 2025 10:10 pm
OOC:
lol, I was about to (in character) compare them to monkeys, then I remembered there's no monkeys in star wars. Maybe gundarks? I was, poorly, trying to get across that they aren't sentient, but don't see why the gamorreans wants them wiped out.
Dec 12, 2025 5:50 pm
Cevron nods. He's a little at ease that they're not sentient. "Yes. Let's just stick to the background and let them do their thing," Cevron says. "Play it off as giving them the honor. Would think with such a reputation as warriors, they would choose a more... dangerous prey. But maybe looks can be deceiving."

The gamorreans are delighted as Lucien mimes the stance and motions of the Niman form for a moment. A coulple of them quickly drop low into a wide athletic stance, and mime the footwork of their ponderous and powerful vibroaxe-style, in response. And for a moment it's as if they're in an imaginary contactless sparring match.

As the Jedi rises out of it they hoot and grunt and squeal at the little moment of comradery, gripping his shoulders and shaking him and clapping him on the back.

When he sits, even near a window, Lucien can only see a small fraction of the race course - the mile-or-two stretch that is both the start and finish line. Pod racers move very fast, and the courses are famously long and riddled with obstacles, turns, and obstructions to keep things interesting, and so most of the watching of the race must be done through holo-screen.

There is a Gamorrean color-commentator announcing every jockeying-collision, turn, over-taking, and crash in a boisterous voice that, to his human ear, sounds something very much like livestock being slaughtered, it is delivered so urgent and emotionally.

When they return, they're bearing 4 flagons of some drink, and a tray with several small bowls or plates of finger food.

They're talking amongst each other and the jumble of gamorrean tongue makes it impossible to catch everything, but he picks our enough to gather that they're talking about a couple of the pod racing pilots.

They plop a flagon down before him and the tray at the center of you all, they gesture at the spread before Lucien and say something including, "Eat" and "Jedi".
