Chapter 3: Thistletop

Barghests are canine beasts that take great joy in the hunt, often lurking near humanoid settlements to find prey that can provide a suitable challenge. Even in the deepest wilderness, barghests choose the most clever or difficult prey, searching endlessly for challenges like giants, nymphs, and unicorns. More than victory or even the possibility of a meal at the end, barghests enjoy the thrill of the chase and the fear they create within their prey. Particularly terrified targets of a hunting barghest might even be allowed to escape, spreading the terror and enticing hunters who can become the barghest's next victims. A handful of barghests resort to learning magical methods of causing fear directly, though they find such fear hollow and unsatisfying.

Brodert is wonders how old this creature could be, as the ruins themselves are thousands of years old, and if it has been locked in for all this time, what could this have done to the creature's mind.
Nov 1, 2025 4:24 pm
"Sounds like something we don't want hanging around in Sandpoint, whether it's locked away or not. Also sounds like something we may not be equipped to handle right now."

Brodert Quink
"I can tell from Nualia's notes that she had trouble releasing it from its prison beneath the ruins," Brodert muses. "And it has been stuck for thousand of years according to her notes so I am sure a couple of days for research will be fine."

"In fact it would probably be there for aeons more as long as nothing changes."

Sheriff Belor Hemlock
"Until some new lunatic gets the same idea Nualia had," Sheriff Belor shakes his head. "Better safe than sorry. It is too far away from town for us to keep a constant guard on it."

Brodert Quink
"There is another thing to keep in mind," Brodert adds. "If this creature has been there since the days of Thassilon it would be the only first hand source. The answers it could give if it'd been made cooperative."
Nov 4, 2025 3:21 pm
Looking at Khel, "You're the Thassilonian expert here. Want to go chat it up?"

Then looking at the others, "Or do we hold off on that for now and look into this cult some more?"
Nov 5, 2025 6:09 am
Khel nodded at Grimwulf, "I wouldn't consider myself a Thassilonian expert, but I would love to study these ruins and the creature."

Brodent says:
"If this creature has been there since the days of Thassilon it would be the only first hand source. The answers it could give if it'd been made cooperative."
"You think this . . . beast, is capable of talking? And you want to engage in conversation with it?? If we track this thing down, and I'm not saying we are, surely just putting down is the best bet to keep the town safe?"

Shalelu Andosana
"I can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with the dwarf," Shalelu says. "Could you even trust anything it says. From what you told us about the barghest it was an evil and cunning creature. Wouldn't it just say whatever you want to hear to bide time until it could get the upper hand."

Brodert Quink
"I suppose," Brodert sighs. "It's just so few sources of reliable information about Thassilon."

You keep reading the notes and her plans to invade Sandpoint with her army of goblins. She wanted to burn it down as an offer to Lamashtu in hopes of being made a half-fiend, but also to fuel the runewell in the catacombs below.

The notes go on to detail how to cause sinspawn to manifest from the runewell, and claim that if someone were to overextend the
runewell’s stores, it would be deactivated. Nualia isn’t sure how to reactivate it, and several times stresses that the runewell shouldn’t be used much until after Sandpoint is razed and the deaths of hundreds of angry citizens and goblins have refilled the well.

The runewell she writes is a Runewell of Wrath. It feeds on the anger of those above as well as influence them, making the citizen of Sandpoint angrier than they would have otherwise been.
OOC:
There was some more information to be gained from her notes, but in classic AP fashion I forgot it as the information is in two different places (so they don't have to repeat the Adventure Background info).
Nov 6, 2025 1:36 pm
At mention of depleting the runewell and what it does, "Now that sounds like a more manageable task. There's nothing wrong with a little anger every now and then," patting his maul, "but it doesn't seem right here. How do we tap it out?".

A small part of him wonders if the well effected his decisions regarding Lyria and Orik, but he quickly brushes that away.

OOC:
You can recall it stopped glowing while you fought the Quasit down below, so you are fairly certain that it already is deactivated.

Luckily I might add, for a few posts later Wess ran through it and if he did he might have become your biggest problem in that fight, overcome with anger towards everyone in the room.
Nov 7, 2025 3:21 pm
Khel continued to listen and read the notes, "A sinspawn? A runewell of wrath? All this seems like something dangerous. Runewell of wrath that can cause anger will be problematic. We fought there; it seems we have deactivated it...for now, at least."
Nov 7, 2025 9:20 pm
Looking at everyone gathered around, "So if we're not touching the barghest, and are satisfied with the runewell being turned off, is that it? Seems like the goblins shouldn't be a threat anymore, we've removed all the major players, and this cult is far off. Do we call it a day, have a few drinks to celebrate, and go our separate ways?"
Nov 7, 2025 9:59 pm
Sheriff Belor Hemlock
The sheriff shrugs. "I would feel safer if the barghest is dealt with," he says. "But unless you can succeed where Nualia failed it's not sure you can gain access to it."

Shalelu Andosana
"Maybe that's for the best, freeing it to kill it could cause it to escape," Shalelu says. "I spend most of my time in the forest. I'll keep an eye on the Thistletop ruins whenever I'm returning to town."

Sheriff Belor Hemlock
The sheriff nods. "That's a start," then he turns to the rest of you. "I would prefer for you to stay in town until the guards from Magnimar arrives. They will want to take your statement. And I'm afraid my men won't be able to deal with a wizard should she try to escape."
Nov 8, 2025 2:29 pm
"I have no issue of letting the Barghest lie. As far as we know, the knowledge of its existence died with Nualia and her subordinates. And even if some do know, they aren't likely to be powerful or motivated enough to risk their lives freeing it. I believe it is best left undisturbed. Sandpoint should be safe for the foreseeable future. And we can finally relax for a bit," he adds with a smile.

OOC:
This will be a good point to close the book on the first adventure. Will get started on the first post for book 2 next week. Feel free to post a short description of what your character gets up to the next couple of weeks.

Wess spent his time in Sandpoint getting to know the locals, and generally trying to learn more about the people he was protecting. He spent a lot of time in the Hagfish, even though he had trouble looking their mascot in the eye without gagging a little.
Nov 12, 2025 4:00 am
Grim stops by Wheen's Wagons and the General Store to catch up with their respective owners and families, exchanging pleasantries with Shayliss but no longer smitten with her.

He spends the next few weeks exploring more of Sandpoint: sampling meads from various pubs, getting medical care at Hannah's, catching a play at the Sandpoint Theater. And he still finds time for gambling, and even participates in a few 'yarning' sessions at The Hagfish, interspersing his Sandpoint heroics into the tall tales.
OOC:
congrats y'all! We finished book one in a little over one year and six months! At this rate only 7.5 more years to go!

On a serious note, it's been a blast and thanks to everyone one who's stuck around for this crazy (long) lil pbp game.

Khel spent his time at Sandpoint poring over all the notes that was recovered from Nualia's stronghold. Most of his time was spent with Brodert Quink, discussing and debating about Thassilon magic, runespawn and runewell of wraith. He sometimes requested Shalelu to take him to the Thassilon ruins when she returned to the town from her excursions.
OOC:
Once again, a big thanks to @Furmyr for running Rise of the Runelords! I started running this adventure for a few friends back in PF1e days and only went to Kaijutsu glassworks before the group fell apart. Now, I have experienced book one with you all, and I can't wait to see what's next!

Chigaru helps around the town, doing odd jobs and grunt work with his loyal dog at his side. He does take a week to travel to Magnimar (with Chakra of course) which had been his original plan after the Swallowtail festival until the goblin attack had made a mess of things. After years of study and ascetic living as a monk, Chigaru welcomes the new experiences on offer at such a large city as Magnimar.

Saldrina stays in the city, spending much of her time honing her skills and entertaining children and patrons at the local taverns. The returns aren't that lucrative, but she isn't in it for the money. She just enjoys interacting with people.
