Saldrina checks the bodies of the hounds to be certain they are dead. Having satisfied herself of such, she helps to gather the cash for the party kitty.

You make your way outside, and you can see the dusk has fallen while you have been down below. You get out of the thistles before darkness sets in and while it is harder to navigate in the dark you are able to return to Sandpoint without any more problems.

You see a couple of weary guards on duty, guarding the gate. They look relieved when you get close enough for them to recognize you.
OOC:
So where will you go now. It is late in the evening, probably near midnight by the time you get back.
Oct 25, 2025 6:28 pm
Wess will check in with the guards, making sure everything is ok, and thanking them for keeping watch. Then he says to the group; "I think we all deserve a rest. We can deal with the books and such in the morning."
Oct 25, 2025 10:26 pm
"Aye, a good night's rest sounds great. Let's meet in the late morning at The Rusty Dragon? Maybe see how Amieko is doing?"

Grim will check up on Jargie Quinn in The Hagfish and the Wheen family in the morning, before meeting up with the rest of the group later.

"The best idea I've heard today. I feel I will ache for several days to come," he says with a toothy wry smile. "But I think a hot bath is in order first. I don't want to think how dirty the bed will get if I simply collapse onto it."
Oct 26, 2025 1:50 pm
With an appointment for the morning you go your own ways. Some of you live locally, but for those that stays at the Rusty Dragon gets a warm welcome when you step in the door. What few patrons remain this late want to know the full story and try to pry it out of you with a drink.

Ameiko shoos them out the door however, saying the story will be told eventually. She sends one of her staff with a message for Brodert, the mayor and the sheriff so the next morning when you come downstairs they are all waiting for you to hear the amazing story.

"Without Nualia's leadership I'd wager the goblins are going to fracture and their little alliance will fall to infighting," you can hear Shalelu explaining to the mayor.
Oct 28, 2025 3:39 pm
Khel came down and wished the mayor, "Good morning, Mayor Deverin. I think we have dealt with the issue of the goblin raid threatening Sandpoint."

Mayor Kendra Deverin
The mayor nods at you. "Shalelu has filled us in," she says. "You still don't know why she targeted the town?"

"I can remember her as a sweet girl, I can't imagine how she could have turned so wicked."
Oct 29, 2025 12:40 pm
Chigaru strokes his jaw thoughtfully. "One of her arms was transformed. Demonic by the looks of it. And I believe she was assumed dead. Perhaps she was angry at the town for abandoning her or not searching hard enough? Do you know more about the circumstances of her original disappearance?"
Oct 29, 2025 2:03 pm
Mayor Kendra Deverin
"A fire," the mayor replies. "The fire that burned down the original cathedral. They bodies were burned beyond recognition. We just assumed..."

Sheriff Belor Hemlock
"It was a natural assumtion," Sheriff Hemlock interjects putting a reassuring hand on the mayor's shoulder. "She and Father Tobyn were the only ones who lived there. He had adopted her a couple of years prior."

Ameiko Kaijitsu
"Begs the question whose bones were buried," Ameiko wonders aloud. "Can't recall anyone going missing around then."

Shalelu Andosana
"Maybe Nualia's journals have the answers?" Shalelu suggests. "Have you had the chance to read them yet?"
Oct 29, 2025 2:51 pm
Khel nodded, "There were lots of journals and notes in her room. We have to go through it to properly understand what she was planning."
Oct 29, 2025 2:52 pm
"There were so many books there. Are we to spend the day readin'?" Wess says. "Surely that would be a task Brodert would like to tackle?"
OOC:
edit: ugh, looks like I'll have a wound for a while.

Looking at how he and Wess are still beat up. "Why doesn't Khel work with Brodert, Saldrina too if you want. Wess, Chigaru, and I can sort through all the equipment and make some coin selling what we don't need. We meet back later at the Hagfish for a pint, a game of cards, and go over what was found."

Looking at essentially the quadrant of Sandpoint elders "And do any of you know where I can find a damned wand of healing?"

Mayor Kendra Deverin
"We are a small town, any such item would have to be ordered from Magnimar," the mayor replies to Grim. "I have some contacts. Could have them bring one when they come to collect Lyrie."

As you start pouring over the notes and journals you realize they go far back. Back to when Nualia was a young woman. She writes about resenting all the attention she got due to her Aasimar heritage. One such situation that she complains about was a Varisian man asking for locks of her hair, believing it would increase fertility.

Eventually she was courted by another Varisian called Delek. Knowing her father wouldn’t approve of their relationship (he wanted her to remain pure so she could join a prestigious convent - another fact she seemed to resent), they kept the affair secret. They met many times in hidden places, and she tells of discovering smugglers tunnels under the town in the process of doing so.

A few months later a depressing entry says she's pregnant. She told Delek, who fled Sandpoint.

When her father discovered her condition he forbade her from leaving the church. He lectured her nightly, and made her pray to Desna for forgiveness. Her entries become more and more resentful after this. She start writing about angry dreams where Lamashtu revealed herself to her.

She came to see her angelic heritage as a curse, and the nightmares showed her how to expunge this taint from her body and soul, replacing it with chaos and cruelty.

Seven months pregnant, she miscarried her child later that night, a child whose deformed shape was no doubt Lamashtu's work. Her father was horrified, and in the ensuing argument she killed him. She found a visitor around her size on the way out of town and brought them to the church in the cover of night where she killed her and set fire to the church.

She fled to Magnimar where she fell in with something calling itself the Skinsaw Cult. They helped her track down Delek and she killed him.

Nualia returned to Sandpoint and found herself drawn to the smuggler’s tunnels where she and Delek had conceived her child. Nualia bashed down a suspicious brick wall, and in so doing discovered the Catacombs of Wrath and the quasit Erylium.

For many months, Nualia studied under Erylium’s tutelage. During this time, she received another vision from Lamashtu—a vision of a barghest named Malfeshnekor imprisoned in an underground room. If she could free him, he would not only help her achieve her vengeance against the town of Sandpoint, he would be the key in cleansing her body of her "celestial taint."

She returned to Magnimar to recruit helpers. She found Tsuto first. Then Lyrie and finally a mercenary she was able to seduce into helping, Orik Vancaskerkin.

Aided by the visions of Lamashtu, she was able to unite the goblin tribes and the first step of her plan was to steal Father Tobyn's bones for use in a ritual that could hopefully free Malfeshnekor. Either the ritual failed or she didn't have time to perform it, as you saw no signs of Malfeshnekor in your time in the ruins.
OOC:
Sorry this ended a bit longer than I intended, but the only way to get an info dump out.

Grim nods at the mayor, "Appreciated."

He's saddened to hear of the tragic downfall of Nualia and her father, but that's quickly replaced by anger at Lamashtu, and the Gods in general "Meddlesome, cruel, selfish. All of them, even the "good" ones. I can't deny their existence, but they should just leave us all alone. The world's a hard enough place, don't need their machinations on top of it."

He calms after a moment and focuses on the other tidbits, "I'm confused, the barghest, whatever that is, is or isn't a problem? And do we need to worry about this cult?"
OOC:
no worries, all good

"From the tone of the entries, I would think that we very much have to worry if Malfeshnekor ever manifests in our world. And if this cult is obsessed with summoning him, then we need to break them up."
Oct 30, 2025 7:28 pm
Khel's eyebrows furrowed as he learned the life story of Nualia. "This is a very sad tale of expectation and its horrible burden that can drive someone to even question and hate their ancestry. I feel sorry for the way she has been manipulated and used by every member she has ever come to know, especially someone like Delek. I can now understand her extreme hatred towards Sandpoint as she thinks everything wrong that has happened to her started from here. However, what's done is done. But Grim and Saldrina bring out important points of interest. What is this cult that she allied with, and who is Malfeshnekor? We have seen that Father Tobyn's bones were indeed stolen, but still we do not know if there are other means to summon Malfeshnekor. I think we should study more about this creature and try to understand how we can stop it if it ever arrives."

OOC:
If you want to, you may give me a Occult roll to figure out what you know about Barghests.

Chigaru looks at the halfling and says, "I have taken a vow of poverty and do not involve myself with matters of trade or finance. While my body may be a weapon, I like to keep my mind just as dangerous and don't shirk reading bound-pages. I would be happy to help research about the nature of a barghest."
Oct 31, 2025 3:09 pm
Khel tried to remember if he had heard or read about Barghest before.
