OOC:
The room behind the man is dimly lit. Behind his shoulder you see a counter on the left wall behind the door. There is a sign for reception and some candy bars and brochures - all of them seem withered and old.
The boy tosses the dead bird toward Esko, seems to be licking his fingers and then runs back to the woods laughing.

The man on the door mutters:

Boys will be boys..... cough Ermmm... yes we might have cabin.... Let me see..

He then turns back inside and slides a part of the counter open and goes to the other side. He leaves the door on the porch open.

Dalvin holds his breath and follows the man inside.
If he gives us a cabin, it will be worth enduring the stench. Hang in there, old man.

"The cabins are... in good condition, yes?" he asks, looking around at the faded brochures.

Greta follows Dalvin in wrinkling her nose, and breathing thru her mouth as she catches the after-whiff of the owner.

Greta tugs on Dalvin's sleeve and asks, "Mr Arnarson, ask for like two cabins as it is not be appropriate for me to share with the men. You and I can like get one of the cabins."

She looks around the interior, fearing for the worst on the likely state of the cabins, "and like, uhm, maybe we should use our own camping gear to sleep in ya know."

Esko stares at the boy running off and glances at the bird with distaste before rejoining the others on the porch.

"Well that's not much in the way of a welcome," He says to Mikko, "I wonder how long its been since anyone has actually stayed here." before following the others into the office.

Mikko ponders Esko’s question. The last time Mikko saw cabins like these was when he and his brother were kids, sent out for a week of summer camp. That must have been at least twenty years ago. It reminds him, that he should call his brother when he gets back home, treat him to dinner, and see how being a new father is treating him.

The dead bird catches his attention as the others filter into the cabin.

He watches as the feathers catch in the winds. Its lifeless eyes gaze out.
Did I really see that kid lick his fingers? He asks himself.

He looks up into the gloom to see if the kid is still around, but the entire situation just feels wrong.
OOC:
[ +- ] When You See Something Disturbing
I think this dead bird mixed with the memory of his brother and much better times camping is enough to make Mikko roll his insanity die.
In an outburst of energy, Mikko grabs one of those sticks and begins to dig a grave of this bird. Its just seems wrong to leave it out like that to decay.

OOC:
Okay, rolling your insanity die is suiting if the situation triggers a memory. Your Insanity is now at 2.
You are pretty sure he did lick his fingers. And you are also pretty sure that there was some blood from the bird on them. Maybe you begin to think about salmonella?

The boy is nowhere to be seen. A wind from the forest make some trees sway. The smell of the air is damp and sour.

The reception room's floor creaks as you enter the room. The room is empty except for an old sofa and a coffee table at the opposite wall. On the wall behind the sofa there is an old and discoloured map of Finland. A dim light flickers above the reception on - off - on. No other lights are functioning. You see dust and dirt gathering on the corners and on the floor. On the other wall there is a window out. You see bushes and trees in shadows.

There is one door next to the reception counter that leads to a toilet ("WC") and next to it there is a door that reads "Staff". There are dried footsteps of mud leading to the Staff entrance.

The man mutters something inaudible and shuffles trough a locker and then hands out a key to the counter. The key has a fob shaped like a fish.

Ermm... well.... Cabin 3 seems to be free.

Dalvin looks around the reception for a tariff board.
"What's your price for the night?" he asks, seeing none.

He takes the key from the counter. Turning to Greta he says, "one cabin will do. It's just the one night, and there might be separate rooms."
OOC:
If the reeking man mentions a regular price, he will ask directions to cabin 3 and will start heading there.
Dec 19, 2023 3:51 pm
Greta starts feeling itchy, but puts it down to the unsanitary place, trying hard to convince herself it is not fleas.

"If you say so Mr Arnarson," she stands a bit closer to him and whispers. "This place is a bit creepy if you ask me."
Dec 20, 2023 2:30 am
Mikko gazes down upon the impromptu bird grave. His hand fiddles with his lighter. He quietly awaits news from the others.
Dec 20, 2023 4:15 am
The reeking man takes a breather to think and then concludes:

"The price is 60 euros a night, cash."
OOC:
This is actually pretty low because it's per a cabin not for person.

Then he suddenly yells:

"Eva, Eva! Escort the guests to cabin three!

And from the staff door a girl appears. A very pale and thin young blonde haired girl about the same age as the boy you saw earlier. She is wearing mud stained jogging pants and an oversized gray hoodie with a crumbling logo that reads "Iilves Camping".
Dec 20, 2023 5:25 am
The last thing Greta expected to see was another youngster, so she is briefly taken aback by the appearance of Eva.

"Uh, well, erm, hello Eva," she greets the girl, then gives Dalvin a nudge and whispers. "It's getting worse Mr Arnarson. Do we have to stay here?"
OOC:
Can Greta spot any family resemblance between the owner and Eva, or with the boy outside, although admittedly her view of him was brief?

OOC:
They might be father and daughter. I.e. there is a resemblance, some facial features - the girl doesn't reek though so that doesn't run in the family

As for the boy, it's hard to say. You saw him only briefly and it was dark.
When you speak to the girl she just nods briefly but doesn't say anything. She walks past you to the door and out (if you don't stop her).

The reeking man says.

Follow her, yes.... to the cabin.
Dec 21, 2023 4:30 am
Greta will rush to leave the office to get away from the stale smell of the man and the stench of decay in the office. Once outside she again asks Dalvin, "Can we not go elsewhere Mr Arnarson?"
Dec 21, 2023 7:41 am
"Hmm? Not likely. We're lucky that the car broke down near this place. Best to have a bad cabin for shelter, than no shelter at all," he replies to Greta.

Then, as they follow the girl, he addresses her, to get a sense of she's just as odd as the other two they met so far. "Your family lives here all year round? Through the winter? Must be tough..."
Dec 21, 2023 8:03 am
Esko shares Greta's distaste for the smell in the cabin and breaths in a lungful of fresh air as they exit. He's been around some industrial plants and labs and has encountered his share of foul odors, but the stench from the office was something else. "As much as I wish he wasn't, I think Dalvin is right Greta. This seems to be our only option. Lets hope Cabin 3 smells better than the office."

Esko follows the group along to Cabin 3, and after Dalvin gets an answer from the girl, Esko asks "How many other cabins are here? Do you have other campers?"

Mikko falls in line after the others.
OOC:
I see on the map that Hut 3 runs next to the road to the forest. What is the quality of that road? Any recent tire tracks?

OOC:
Yes, it's next to the way to the forest. But the way is more like a dirt path than a road. No car could drive it very far because it gets more cramped as it enters the forest. You see a couple of footprints - probably the boy as he turned quite fast and headed to the forest.
Dec 23, 2023 8:07 am
The girl doesn't seem to address anybody directly but she answers:

We're always here, our family. Mother, father, me and my brother...... cabins 4 and 5 are occupied.

As you walk through the yard you see that the cabins numbered 1 and 2 are in bad shape. The first has a caved in roof and the second doesn't have a door and you see that the floor might be collapsed. All the other cabins look old and withered, it seems it's been a long time since any renovations have been done.

Cabin 4 has a light on and there are wind chimes hanging on the porch. They make an eerie ring in the night air.

Cabin 5 hasn't got any lights on but it seems to be in better condition.

You walk past the dead bird and reach cabin 3. The girl points at the door and tells you:

Cabin 3 is here.

As she looks at you she forms a heartless smile showing her teeth. That lasts only a second or two. Then her face melts back to being blank and motionless. She quickly starts to walk back to the reception.
Dec 23, 2023 4:44 pm
"Wait Eva!" Greta calls to the girl and quickly catches up with her. "Listen, there's no like signal here which is so messed up. So, dya like wanna hang? Give up the tea on who lives in the other cabins and all? Huh?"

Greta gives the girl a friendly smile, trying to encourage her to say yes.
