Freki squints at Cutwell like he's trying to figure out how the barber-surgeon's mind works ... probably always picks scissors, he thinks as a smirk forms on his face.

He's about to accept the man's challenge, but Cutwell accepts defeat before he can speak ...

Sucking through his teeth, Cutwell admits his defeat.

"Right! Be ready to jump in!" he warns, before creeping up to take a peek!

Hefting her spear and shield in the sopping wet and gusting wind, Sow just gives Cutwell a look — letting him know she’ll probably back him up if things go sideways…

Freki nods with encouragement, "We've got your back."
Feb 27, 2024 12:40 am
Cutwell advances on the position, creeping up the stairs to toward the fire. Peeking in, he sees a single stone chamber, about 15' square. The center is dominated by a wide, brass brazier, which fills the room with light. The fire dances and reflects off of brass suns that are inlaid on the walls, floors, and ceilings, bringing them to life

Seated at the back of the room are two men, who look to be in bad shape. They are bandaged, and spots of red seeping through the bandages. They don't appear to be awake. A third man stands, and is examining the suns, his back turned from the entrance. They wear garb that befits hunters, including scabbarded short swords, but they display no sign of allegiance to a gang.

Cutwell beckons the others up excitedly. His own group also carried no colors, and this lot looked in rough shape.

He steps into the doorway, and clears his throat.

"Bad day for it, ain’t it?" he says to the man with his back turned to Cutwell.

Freki joins Cutwell, walking up the steps and into the entrance. He pulls down the hood of his jungle cloak to reveal a friendly smile, "Good morning fellas."

"Feel like a bit of friendly company? You might even get a fine haircut if you fancy such a thing," Flint says following the men into the building and slapping Cutwell on his shoulder. He's ready to draw his sword at a moment's notice though.

"We could use a drying out and a break from this damnable weather."

The man whips around, his hand reflexively falling to his hilt, to see (at least) three poncho-garbed, sopping wet men stepping into the light. He is a Union man by the look of it, with a thin face under a white mustache and spectacles that reflect light like mirrors. He has a wild look to him, agitated and unhinged.

"Confound it! You can see this wretched relic from the outside, I take it? Bah!"

He slams the flat of his hand against one of the suns, to no visible effect.

"Do you hear it? That song, strangers? ANSWER!"

Thunder crashes, shaking the small structure.
Feb 27, 2024 6:50 pm
Behind the three men confronting the stranger with the spectacles, a shadow lurks, a shade that gets briefly illuminated by lightning. It carries a spear on its shoulder, and the tip glints as electricity forks across the sky.

Peeking around the edge of Flint’s bulk, Sow tries to make out the rest of the cave, to make sure there are not others rushing to its defense, other armed men not visible from the outside…

Flint much relieved by what looked to be an old man along with a few wounded others nearby, relaxed his hand that had snaked around to the hilt of his sword. He then sees the other one staring at the suns, and his hand drops back down back to the hilt.

"Barely," Flint replies to the wildman. His eyebrows arch in surprise when he suddenly smacks one of the suns. Flint throws a quick glance at his friends, his expression suggesting that the man is a bit looney.

"What troubles you so about the song, if I may ask?"

The ensuing crash of thunder startled Flint but he hid it well. He wasn't going to say he didn't hear a song as he felt that would enrage the man further, but the truth was, he did not hear a song.

"And what’s it that troubles them?" Cutwell asks, motioning to his wounded companions, somehow sleeping through all the racket.

"Dead to the world, ain’t they?" he continues, his eyebrow raised. "You get caught by them hornblowers last night, was it?"

Freki shares a puzzled look with Flint and asks, "What do you mean, relic? This stone ruin? Why wouldn't we be able to see it?"

He flinches at the crashing thunder as he ponders the old man's second comment about the music, but then nods his head at Cutwell's interpretation and waits for the man's response.

Now that you are in the warmth of the fire, you get a better look. The stone structure is dry, except for the water you're dripping on it. The brass suns each feel alive in the reflection of the firelight, and seem individually crafted, unique.

The injured men huddled in the back are slumped over, tossing and moaning weakly. Their faces are gaunt and pained, as if they are sleeping in a nightmare. They have blankets draped over them, but you can tell something is very wrong with one of their arms. It is in a sling, but the bloody bandage is wrapped thick around the wrist as if it were twice as thick as a normal man's arm.

Regarding the music, the stranger replies in cryptic words. "Pray you never hear it. The day you hear the music, you must leave Khazuul forever. It calls you to your doom."

When KCC mentions the injured men, the stranger snaps at him. "Don't TOUCH them! Cursed, they are. But I have already paid the price. I will tend to them."

When Freki asks about the relic, he becomes relaxed again. "Sometimes Khazuul's relics hide in plain sight! I discovered this one under everyone's noses. They thought it was a toy! Discarded it! But I knew better." His mood starts getting darker "They always thought they knew better than me. But I showed them, didn't it? I showed them..."

But then serenity washes over his face.

"So many questions. Rightfully so - Khazuul is a puzzle, a mystery. But every question is answered with two more, like a hydra's severed head."

"I won't argue about Khazuul being a mystery. The terrible weather never stops!" The injured men did indeed look odd and perhaps they were truly cursed. Perhaps remaining in this strange place was not ideal, but the idea of going back out there in the incessant rain didn't sit well with him.

Songs unheard, curses, relics. What kind of a place was this?

"What curse has touched those men, may I ask?"

As the menfolk converse with the lunatic, Sow makes eye contact with Saffron, wordlessly expressing the wonder the former fieldwarden feels upon entering the stone chamber, and upon finally laying eyes on some of the actual treasures Khazuul is rumored to contain. The stonework, the inlaid brass suns -- Sow finds them breathtakingly beautiful, moreso even than the firefly spectacle they all enjoyed before.

Inspecting the chamber, the little drowned rat paces around, trying to sense some pattern of things, trying to see if there are connections, if there is some message from the ancient past on display. And she listens as she searches, trying to hear this song as she too touches the shining metal with tentative fingertips...

Flint sees Sow about to touch one of the suns and calls out as softly as she will hear, "Sow, no!"

Who was to say the suns weren't as cursed as the men, if indeed there were curses in this place at all, but why take a chance?

The stranger's mirrored glasses flash as his head darts toward Flint to answer. "The weather, exactly! Storms are just the tip of the mystery. Is it not strange that there is so much rain here? Khazuul is inside a fucking desert! Where does the water come from?"

When Flint switches topics to the injured men, the stranger gets cagey. "I am working on several hypotheses, but in the meantime I am managing to keep the curse at bay. You might think my methods extreme, but do what must be done."

"These questions are not the right ones! They are distractions, meant to lead you off track."

Meanwhile, Sow examines the stars and their layout. All the stars have six points, each touching the edge of a circular ridge of stone they are set within. When she reaches out to touch the star, the act of obscuring it with her hand has a noticeable effect on the star. Unilluminated, the star has a tarnished and dead appearance. Shortly after, there is a creak and groan from the structure, which draws the stranger's attention

"Girl! Touching nothing!"

Cutwell gets down on his haunches, and passes a cocked eye over the injured. He keeps his hands to himself, and keeps a bit of distance between them, incase one of them takes a fit of coughing or something more unpleasant.

"Leprosy, is it? Tuberculosis? Something like that, you mean?"

He tries to examine them, and ascertain exactly what the man meant by doing what had to be done!

"It's what I've been saying and my compatriots are probably tired of hearing me complain about it. Soon we will sprout gills and swim away!" Flint says to the man when he so eloquently agrees about the weather.

As Flint watches Sow when the old man yells at her, Flint raises his hands as if to say, Told you.
