Atheology: Providence v. the Enemy or Shadow

Let's remember that we are in the world of the 1937 Hobbit. This is before Tolkien had worked the complex mythistory of the Silmarilion, the underwriting of Lord of the Rings. Significantly, it also is before Tolkien must confront the monstrous horrors of the Third Reich. We are not in a world of struggle between personified Good and Evil. Rather we are in a world of complex moral relationships. It is not utterly unthinkable that some goblins might sometimes trade or bicker with some elves or dwarfs.

Here then the Enemy or Shadow is not some great single being. Rather it is a collective name for people most of whom ignore their moral compass and a few of whom abide an antipodal compass.

Your good folk adhere to goodness and thank providence for their fortunes.
