Introductions, Questions, and Maybe Answers go Here!

Please use this 'thread' to give brief introductions (for starters!) and to post any questions you'd like answered. Also any chit-chat and out-of-character general talk can go here for now.

My Introduction: I'm an old rp-gamer who started play back in ancient times. White Box D&D starting in 1975, and Traveller as soon as it came out in 1977. I have played and GMed a whole lot of different games but Classic Traveller is one I keep going back to. Relatively rules lite and pretty intuitive; very flexible and can be used for a lot of different styles of game. Can you tell I like it?

I live in Northern California. I have a few health issues which could possibly restrict my ability to run the game every once in a while. So my games are a little erratic. I'm pretty easy going and try to work with players to make sure they're enjoying the game; but I expect players to treat each other with respect and restraint.

I play Senior Softball and am an Amateur Photographer. I'm running a face-to-face Dragonbane game twice a month.

That's it for now. --DAVID

Hello!

You can call me Tamm.

I started playing RPGs with the Dungeons & Dragons boxed set, and I still play in a D&D game today. Does anyone remember Star Frontiers? Car Wars? Those were my second boxed sets. From there, I moved on to Traveller and Twilight: 2000, while also dabbling in quite a few other game systems over the years.

I'm pretty easygoing, and I have a lot of patience with GMs and other players. I can be a bit of a bulldog when I have a character idea in mind, but nothing is ever set in stone unless the GM rules otherwise.

I live in the southeastern U.S. with my wonderful wife and our three cats.

Hi!

I am 'Muns' which is short hand for my last name.

I am an old grey haired gamer like Tamm and David. I started with wargames watching the guys around the other table with the white and later the brown box sets of D&D. It was a bit over whelming to me at first but I learned the system. In 1977 when the first black box set with the three little black books (LBB), I bought a set just in time for my Dad reassignment back to Japan. My Dad was in the Navy and that had a bit to do with my interest at a young age with military things. I joined the Army in 1980 and in the eighties in the Army there were face-to-face game groups. I learned a lot from those, but one things we did like was Traveller, which allowed us to imagine another world in a far Galaxy. My life became serious and the games fell to the way side. Then when i was stationed in Korea in 1996 the internet and hotmail was the rage and I discovered Yahoo games and the play-by-email games. That is where I met some of the other grey beards in the game.

I am retired-retired (after the Army I worked for the Army as a civilian writing those boring requirement documents) and thus I have some time on my hands. I do dabble in some face-to-face games, but I still haven't found the right group.

I am active in our local Veterans groups, I try to get to the woods and hunt, but it is mostly animal watching, as I am a lousy hunter. I live in KC, MO just north of the airport. I live with my wife and our Dog.

My name is Thomas. I, like all the previous people, and an old guy who likes RPGs.

I've been playing RPGS for many a year starting with Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (though I owned Powers and Perils for a decade before even that.) Currently I am in two remote Pathfinder 2e games and usually join my FLGS weekly Pathfinder Society games.

Honestly I prefer sci-fi tRPGs, but no one in my area plays those. I also read and collect tRPGs as a hobby.

I am unfortunately a pretty anxious person, which can sometimes make me be very quite.

Howdy Thomas, welcome aboard! We will get you going on this pretty quickly. If you've used Gamers Plane a bit you'll get a character up and running easily. I'll need to hear from you what sort of character you'll want to play. But you might want to skim through the material already posted here to get some ideas. And go ahead and pester us with questions. You can PM me directly if you want, or put your questions in the relevant threads. I'm looking forward to your participation!

Hello, everyone. Yet another old gamer here. As opposed to the probable characters, it seems the players are already familiar with ancient tech, such as VCRs. :-)

The name "rpgventurer" comes from a gaming blog I wanted to start but never made the time.

I played Avalon Hill, SPI, and miniatures wargames with my younger brother and friends in high school. In the first weekend of my college freshman year (fall 1976), I joined the school's wargames club and was introduced to the D&D White Box and other RPGs. We played games regularly through college and a couple of years after, then more important matters (jobs, marriage, family) gradually got in our way.

My interest in RPGs re-ignited a little over 10 years ago when my two young teenagers expressed a desire to play D&D. It wasn't for them, but I was hooked again. Since then, I've managed to play several games in person or via Zoom, but the vast majority of my role-playing has been on Gamers Plane. I learned a lot about 5e and other new games on this site.

I live in the suburbs of Chicago.

Thanks for inviting me. After hearing about Traveller for decades, I'm glad to finally participate in an adventure.

Hi. I'm another old time gamer as well. Started playing around 1977 with AD&D 1st Edition. I remember going to the local gaming store and being one of the first people in town to have the Dungeon Master's Guide. I believe I had pre-ordered it. Played AD&D for a number of years but started getting into tons of other RPGs with Traveller being one of my favourites. I then got married had a few kids and stopped having time to game. It is only in the last few years that I got back into gaming. In fact one of the first PBP games was a Traveller game that David ran, at least originally, on a different platform.

So long time gamer with a huge gap in gaming. I live in Calgary, Canada with my wife, cat and soon to be empty house as my youngest daughter is marrying next year and moving out. Unfortunately, unlike some of you I'm still working, as a software developer, and may be a few years before retiring (unless I'm given a package to leave or other circumstances causes me to leave).

Howdy Dave and rpgventure. Glad to have you with us. I think this crew is going to work out fine!

I did a lot of wargames before D&D emerged. All through High School and a little in college, too. I also played a lot of "En Garde" back then; anybody here ever play that? Talk about characters dying off in droves!

Never played "En Garde," but I heard others play it at the college wargame club.

Strangely enough, @dabaggins, I am also still working full-time as a software developer. My employer has no mandatory retirement age and I still enjoy the job.

I think I'm not going to be able to shake the energy loose to really give this game proper attention.
Sep 21, 2026 7:45 pm
That's too bad but I understand. Maybe you can jump in at a later time when you have more energy.

I had no idea how much info exists for Traveller. I’m taking it in little bits at a time. The map and wiki are really helpful.

I am very sorry to hear that you are going to leave the game. David is a really good GM and can accommodate players that play in the game.

I hope it is not what I have written that lead you to this conclusion to leave.

Yes those two wesites are!

It is also why I added links in my posts to help you and other new players to where the information is instead of having this immense library that you have to shift through. Although the search capability for the Traveller wiki is very good.

Also the other websites that David has posted are also very good (Traveller in Two pages is the tops!)

Not at all, not at all. I seem to only have time to check posts one or two times a day, and from early posts it almost seems like that isn't often enough to keep up.
Sep 22, 2026 9:01 pm
As the game gets going the posts will slow down. Checking on the posts once or twice a day is sufficient to keep up.

@LloganTamm is correct.

IIRC @dabaggins only checks the game once a day, in the evening. At least that is his pattern in other games. The point is, do not let the pace of the quick posting early in this game be an indication of the tempo of posting in the actual game.

Every game I’ve been in slows down once the actual adventure starts.

Game Pace is concieved of as 3 posts per week. A bit more during action sequences & combat. A bit slower when I'm gone for a few days, like this past week. You really should not have to check the page every day.
