"Is there anything you want for dessert?" Shelly starts stacking the plates, clearing your table as she talks. "Chocolate fudge? A slice of cheesecake?"

You’ve just finished lunch at the Lemp Mansion. The dining room is a little old and a little formal: high ceiling, dark wood, long curtains over the windows. The four of you came here to talk shop, about your newly formed superhero team, and how best to do some good in this city.

Shelly picks up another plate.

That is when the first siren goes. Police, by the sound of it: a loud wail that passes the mansion and keeps going. Then a second. Then a third, from a different direction, the three sirens blare into each other in one ugly noisy cacophony. A kid by the windows pushes the curtain aside, looks out, shrugs, and goes back to his chicken strips.

Then you hear it. A single loud 'bang' from somewhere south. Could be a blown tire. Could be a gun.

You don't have to keep guessing for long. A burst of gunfire follows, five or six shots in irregular intervals. It can’t be coming from too far away. More gunshots follow, as if entire magazines are being emptied into something.

All four of your phones light up at once. It’s NotifySTL, the city alert app you all installed to keep track of anything unusual. The banner at the top is bright red.
[ +- ] NOTIFYSTL CITY ALERT
"Think about it, I’ll be right back" Shelly says, and walks away, carrying your plates with her.
What do you do?

Dr Annette Brody's eyes narrow as she reads the NotifySTL message on her phone. She was mildly annoyed. She'd been hoping to bask in the afterglow of the vegan Mediterranean penne she'd just finished.

Annette looks to her fellow superheroes at the table. "Fudge, cheesecake, or violent disturbance, Power Posse?"

Shawn rocks back on his seat as he skims through the alert as if ordering from a menu.

"Think I'll have the violent retribution."

He plops forward to stand, stuffing his phone and pulling free his wallet as he turns to call after the waitress.

"Just the bill, Shelly. Matter of fact. I'll pay for the table."

He looks back to the newly formed group with a wink.

"Showtime folks. Get whatever you need ready while I square this away and join back up."

Noticing her phone light up, Carolina glances at hers for a moment, but quickly tries to bury her face in the menu she's holding as if that'll make it go away.

"If y'all are looking for recommendations, word on the street is this place has some real good- wait what? Violent disturbance?"

Upon hearing Annette and seeing the others on their phones, Carolina pauses, reluctantly checks hers, and lets out an exasperated sigh while visibly pouting.

"Dammiiiiiiit, the cheesecake was like the main reason I'd wanted to eat here. Ugh, whatever, but y'all gotta try it sometime."

As Carolina stands up, she gives Shawn an appreciative pat on the shoulder after he offers to pay, then puts on her hat that had been leaning against her chair.

"So, did we all come prepared?"
Sep 15, 2026 3:50 pm
OOC:
If you want, you can assume you are wearing your costume under your civilian clothes. Or, since the team's base is right under Lemp Mansion, you can change there before you leave.

The NotifySTL alert is one mile from here. How would you get to Chippewa and Broadway? Showstopper can teleport. Inkredible can swing, and is probably strong enough to carry one other person if you want to do that. Walking is an option, but it will take longer, and the situation on the ground may get worse while you are on the way.

What do you do?
Sep 15, 2026 3:54 pm
Adrian glanced at his phone and shook his head. "Just like waitresses, trouble always comes when trying to relax and eat. At least this time, I didn’t have a mouthful of that cheesecake."

He smiled at Carolina’s comment. "It just gives us a reason to come back and relax after. Shawn can buy us a round of dessert then too." After her comment about coming prepared, Adrian patted his backpack. "One thing I learned while sitting at home for the last decade is how to be like a Boy Scout, always prepared." He smiled, patting his backpack as he slung it over his shoulder.
Sep 15, 2026 10:03 pm
Annette stands. Her superhero costume was under her civilian clothes.

"Thanks for paying, Shawn. And can I just say, whoever's idea it was to put our base right under this restaurant, in my professional opinion, you're an absolute genius."

She uses her Power of Mimicry to copy Carolina's Power of Teleportation. "See you at the Chippewa and Broadway intersection, Power Posse."

Annette teleports.

"See, now that sounds like a good idea if I've ever heard one, Adrian. Alright, I'll see y'all at the show."

Carolina then walks away from the table, giving the remaining heroes behind her a small wave as she scans the room for the nearest unoccupied restroom or closet. She glances around to see if anyone's watching before stepping inside, out of view. About a minute later, some space by the restaurant's exit briefly appears to fold in on itself before a now fully costumed Showstopper appears, startling a few guests. Mumbling a half-hearted apology, she pushes past them, outside the building, then looks in the direction of the gunshots before vanishing, leaving only an extremely brief "ripple" occupying the space she once stood in.

Man-tis

https://i.imgur.com/QPxM2GY.png A few short moments later you all find yourself in the intersection. Three SLMPD cruisers are parked behind the edge of the building. The doors are open, the roof lights on, as officers crouch down behind the engines and fire their pistols in useless bursts. The bullets simply bounce off their target’s chitin armor, ricocheting dangerously in all directions.

The monster. The monster the police are firing at is easily eleven feet tall – probably taller if it could straighten up. The body looks like a giant mantis, but part of the gaunt torso also looks human, with ribs under the insect’s shell. The head is almost like a man’s; it has wispy black hair, a couple of antennas, and a mouth, rather than insect’s mandibles.

Between the cruisers and that thing, is an officer on his back.

He is closer to the Man-tis. His right leg, below the knee, is missing. He has both of his hands holding the stump, but he is quickly losing blood. The officers behind the cars can see him, but they can’t reach him. Every time one of them starts to move, the creature turns its head toward them, and they get back down.

Cluck-cluck-cluck

The Man-tis raises his barbed arms. It is standing right above a school bus. You can’t tell from here if there is anyone still inside, though judging by the panic of the police officers, and their attempt to distract the creature – there must be still children trapped inside.

Cluck-cluck-cluck

For half a second, the antennas straighten, and the Man-tis head turns to look at the newcomers far away. Then his attention turns back to the school bus, and the appetizing meal awaiting it.

What do you do?

All Heroes go first, as the Man-tis is currently not focused on you.

I included a map, which is basically just a google street map overview of the area, with a grid slapped on it. Not perfect, but it gives a...tolerable division into zones. Annette's eyes widen at the giant monstrosity that is Man-tis!

The giant creature was still a distance away, but she could make out the fallen police officer and the school bus.

Annette grits her teeth with focus, then teleports with a ripple in the air, as close as she can get to Mantis.

"Hey, you!" she screams out loud at the monster only a short distance away now.

She focuses again, using her Power of Duplication to create copies of herself that step out from her body.

The eyes of every Annette in the growing crowd beside her are focused on Man-tis.

"LEAVE THEM ALONE!" they all scream together!

The creature turns its head at the sight of the appetizing multiplying meat morsels. Those have the benefit of not being encased in metal, and therefore that much more attractive. It turns its body toward the Anne(s), a decision she might live to regret. IF she lives.
Sep 17, 2026 2:11 am
Once Showstopper arrived at the scene, she froze for a moment upon seeing the nightmarish creature in the distance and the havoc it had caused. Shaking off her fear, Showstopper narrows her eyes, focusing on a distant location. After concentrating, she vanishes once again, but for a second longer than usual. Pushing her connection to the Shadowverse to its limit, she remains in that domain as long as she can to cover more distance than usual before finding herself on a rooftop next to the crime scene. Taking a few deep breaths, clearly winded from straining her ability, she reaches both hands towards her holsters to draw her signature weapons.

What she produces are 2 revolvers, (cheaply) painted in the same bright red and blue as her costume, with a single word painted in gold lettering on one side of each: "Shock" on one, "Awe" on the other. Almost immediately after grabbing them, thin tendrils of black mist begin rising from the chambers of both weapons as she takes aim, channeling the Shadowverse's energy into them. Once Anne-Tibody gets Man-tis' attention, Showstopper simultaneously fires a round from both, streams of the same mist trailing the bullets as they fly out of the barrels.

Black tendrils snap out to the various trees and rooftops, surging along each surface before contracting to whip Inkredible towards the growing sounds of screams and gunfire. Another pull, and he finds his footing atop the apartments overlooking the grotesque man..tis? The massive bastard would take more than a boot to squash out. That much was certain. He quickly made his way to the edge and called out to it.

"Hey Ugly! Shouldn't you be off finding some freak lady-mantis to bite your head off?"

He leaps from the roof, casting the tendrils into the treeline to bring him to the grounds behind the monstrosity.

"The hell happened with you anyway? Some experiment gone wrong? Like, way wrong."

The shot goes wide above it’s almost human head. More bullets ricochet off its Armor. The Man-tis takes no notice. His attention is focused on the Annet(s). Then it hears something from behind, and turns its head to look at Inkredible.

There is something human in its eyes. Some faint recognition. Its mouth opens to make sounds, but all that comes out of it is spit. Then the flicker of humanity dies. The words from Inkredible are but muffled sounds that are incomprehensible to its insect part.

It turns back toward the crowd of fleshy women standing not too fat away from it. It’s a reflex now. The creature is hungry, and there is meat right in front of it. It covers the short distance in a single leap, the barbed bladed arm swinging like a giant scythe at the women...
OOC:
The shot from Showstopper missed. I highly recommend to start pushing your rolls...

Annette, slashed and bleeding, is on the ground, looking up at the monstrous Man-tis above her as it cuts through her other selves with its giant arm-scythes.

The Anne-Tibodies are screaming around her, limbs falling, torsos de-torsoed, blood spraying everywhere, the red spraying across her face again.

Annette grits her teeth. At least the fallen police officer and the school bus were going to be able to get away. She had to keep this thing focused on her so her teammates could kill it.

The last Anne-Tibody looks at Annette and screams, "Go!" then turns to face Man-tis.

Annette pushes herself up, painfully, to her feet as Man-tis decapitates the Anne-Tibody, and Annette hobbles away as fast as she can.

She could've teleported through Showstopper's Shadowverse to get away, far away in an instant from that giant monster, but that sudden movement might've lost Man-tis' current attention on her.

"Missed one!" she screams over her shoulder at it.

The Man-tis makes a sound like half a wail and half a clicking ‘cluck-cluck-cluck’ when the round(s) from showstopper gun slam into its body. It’s in pain, terrible pain. It’s human like face wishes it could scream, but it doesn’t remember how. It staggers on all four of its legs as it tries to get its bearing.

And then Inkredible slams into it. His fist actually cracks his chitine plate – the one that was impervious to small arms shots from the police. Green-brown ichor spills out. The entire eleven-foot creature folds from the punch and is pushed a few giant steps backward from the momentum.
Man-tis

The insect now takes the wheel. It no longer looks for a Annette, or the bus, or the cops, or even whomever shot at it from the rooftop. Every one of its limbs slash at his new assailant – the one right in front of it. For the first time, it is fighting to stay live, hacking at Inkredible with everything it has.

Amidst the chaos, Showstopper would find herself joined on the roof by the clunking of metal boots emitting from an armored figure. The armor is predominantly silver like aluminum and orange with the iconography of Brawndo, the energy drink supposedly favored by the most x-treme of athletes but more commonly by your average layabout and nerd. Its helmet bears a tinted visor, and on its back is a rack of ammunition, a belt feeding into an arm cannon mounted alongside the right arm of the suit. A booming, modulated voice speaks, deeply suggestive of the ego of its wearer.

"Having a little trouble there, kid?" Brawndo Man laughs. "I gotta tell you, unlike some of our competitors and their fetid, run-down distilleries, you'll never find a bug like that when you crack open a cold, shocking can of Brawndo."

Cupping their hand, the armored figure yells to Inkredible. "Go for the jaw, drippy! That's what I'd do!"

"HOLY SH- oh wait, phew, some backup."

She leans forward, hands on her knees, catching her breath as her eyes wander between Man-tis and the injured officer. With newly arrived help and Man-tis’ attention diverted, she feels like there’s an opportunity here that someone needs to act fast on.

"I don’t know if that fella down there’s got much time, I’m going for the rescue. Thanks for the support and uhhh, advertisement…?"

She looks back to Brawndo Man mid-sentence and trails off, brow furrowed in a little confusion, as she registers his comments and recognizes the logo and color scheme on his suit. With a lot of questions and no time to ask them, she puts those thoughts on hold and slides down a nearby downspout to get to ground level. Running over to the injured officer, she immediately tries to get them out of harms way (relatively speaking).

The impacts came fast despite the thing's size, each massive limb connecting, knocking Inkredible on his ass followed by another drawing equal parts blood and bile that spew across his chest. His vision blurs, another hit and he'd be the bug getting squashed. The ink shifts, sensing an opportunity, perhaps the last to survive. It spikes off the ground, forcing Inkredible to his feet before extending itself further, covering more, controlling more. His vision and senses recover in time to hear the bravado from on high. The jaw, yes. That would work. Ink contracts, muscles pulling in tandem, and in a burst Inkredible launches at the Man-tis, arm cocked to drive as much spite as he could into the damn things jaw.

The Man-tis raises his arm to protect its head, putting it between Inkredible’s fist and it’s human-like jaw. It’s not enough. The fist hits its arm first. The limb just folds backward in an ugly angle. The head follows. The side of its face caves in. The creature wails in a human-like cry, before staggering, and toppling down.

"Central, subject is down. Repeat, subject is down. Send EMS, now. We’ve got an officer down and civilians in the bus."

She looks at the mass of dead Anne-Tibodies, severed in different ways from Man-tis' arm-scythes.

Her face cracks with emotion. They saved her life. All of them.

Annette takes another breath, then heads to the officer on the radio to Central.

"Officer," she says, then gestures at the Anne-Tibodies, "If you could please have a biohazard team handle... my bodies. They need to be incinerated immediately. It's a... public health issue."

She didn't want the Institute to somehow get their hands on a tissue sample to study. Especially with this much tissue on hand with which to attempt to reverse engineer what she had. What was inside her.

What they'd made her create.

An observer of any sort would not miss the fact that Brawndo Man's contribution to the battle was relatively brief, if especially decisive in the moment. However, the boisterous persona had to perform for the cameras no matter what, and so they hopped down to the ground, striding over to the remains of the Man-tis and putting their foot firmly on its head, flashing a jaunty pose and thumbs up to a small drone that descended to capture the footage of the group's "victory" for promotional material.

"And THAT is how you deal with pests, Brawnies! Next time a creepy crawly tears up the neighborhood, don't run away! Pop open a can of Brawndo, take a big gulp, and terrorize it right back!" Punctuating that statement, a chilled can pops out of their arm cannon with a FOOMP and they catch it, handing it to a nearby police officer. "Give it a try, officer. You'll be as brawny as me in no time! First one's free!"

Flux sat down on the curb, looking the aftermath of the battle over. He had been so sure he would have been able to handle it he had overlooked everything short of basic tactics. All the options he could have done ran through his head as he rested his head on his knees and mentally ran each moment of the battle through his head. He felt so useless...
Sep 21, 2026 2:44 am
Inkredible joined Flux on the curb, hand clutching his ribs as he eased himself down to lay back. The ink had receded after the desperate uppercut, now resting as a mundane tattoo along his arm.

"That sucked."

The words huffed out like a tired joke. He turns after a silent few moments to look him over, noting the hunched signs of disappointment.

"Hey, not everyday you fight a big fuck off bug person. Turned out better than had we not shown up. That's the point, yeah?"
Sep 21, 2026 6:21 am
As the Man-tis was taken down, Showstopper had been trying, to no avail, to get the injured officer away from the battlefield. She turned to see Man-tis’ death throes, before turning back around to see medical personnel and police officers rushing towards the scene. Realizing they were better equipped for this than her, Showstopper moved away from the downed officer but lingered close by as help arrived.

"I uh- I tried to help but um… i-is he gonna be ok?"

She says this to nobody in particular and watches on, concern apparent in her eyes, fearful that she had needed to get him out of harms way sooner.
Sep 21, 2026 6:57 am
Two of the officers break away from the half circle around the Man-tis corpse and run for the school bus. They reach the door, and push it open. A moment passes, then the first kid comes out – a girl with a backpack on her shoulders, her face wet with tears. Then behind her the rest of them, almost fifty kids from Meramec Elementary, second grade to fifth judging by their heights.

Some of them are crying, but a few are downright exhilarated; it’s not every day that you see real superheros up so close, bringing down a terrible monster. The ones who didn’t understand how much danger they were actually in, stare at heroes, their mouth hanging open with awe.

None of the children are hurt. The bus is a little dented, and there is a hole in it were one of the barbed arm went through the metal, but luckily, you all arrived before the Man-tis opened the bus like a tin can.

The parents are already coming more and more cars stopped a block away from the intersection. Fathers, mothers, grabbing and hugging the little children, with a ‘thank you, thank you, thank you’, (and more then a few who thank god rather than you).

Ambulances are here as well. So many of them. Most of them are not actually needed, except perhaps scoop up the remains of Anne-Tibody(s) from the floor. And then not even that, because once the doctor told them the bodies are a bio-hazard, the police put a yellow line to restrict access to the area as they wait for the bio-hazard team to arrive in their hazmat suits.

The only one who does end up being evacuated is officer Darcy. He is missing one of his legs, and his face is as white as a sheet of paper. He is unresponsive as they lift him off the ground, and the ambulance quickly carries him to the ER. Nobody there could tell showstopper if he will be alright or not.

Above you two news chopper already hover. A van from Channel 5 hits the curb hard as it comes to a stop. Door opens, reports rush into the scene, followed by the camera crews. All of them want to be the first to bring live pictures from the scene – and hopefully, be the first (if not only) to get a statement out of the superheros.

But the news reporters are not the first. Every window on the block had a phone pointed at the action. The entire fight is already on the internet; Anne distracting the creature, Showstoper putting shots into the creature from the rooftop, Flux charging in, Inkredible’s fist going through its jaw – and the Brawndo man posing over the corpse. Pictures of the little children disembarking the bus, all safe. You were unknown yesterday. Today you are all going to be on the national news.

Do you stay to talk with the reporters, or disappear where you come from?

And more important questions, perhaps: what was that creature? where did it came from? and...are there any more?

One of the officers slowly approaches the Brawndo Man, who stands on the corpse with a foot over its head. He looks at the massive arm cannon, and very visibly decides NOT to ask him if he has a license for that. He looks at the can of Brawndo and shakes his head once.

"Appreciate it, but I can’t drink on the job" he looks around. The other officers are already scurrying around. The camera crews have to be told not to approach, then forced back away from the scene. He looks back at the man (he assumes it’s a man) in the powered armor, then at the others

"Who are you guys?"

Annette sticks around to help the Biohazard Team collect the dead Anne-Tibodies, then travels with them to ensure they are incinerated completely.

She also takes a sample of tissue from Man-tis for research.

Once she's confirmed the Biohazard Team has destroyed the Anne-Tibodies, Annette returns to the Power Posse's base to investigate that tissue from Man-tis.

"What, you think I'm putting on a mask to announce that to the first person that asks? We go by The Power Posse if you want something to tell folks. Just your friendly neighborhood helpers when things get out of hand."

He takes the drink from Brawndo and downs a few gulps before hooking a thumb at the man-corpse.

"Speaking of which, any idea where that thing scuttled out from? Not an easy thing to miss given it makes a bus look small."

Showstopper watches Officer Darcy be escorted away and stares down at the ground for a few moments before taking a deep breath.

"You did your best partner, don’t beat yourself up over a victory."

She mumbles this to herself and tries to regain her composure, looking up from the ground and scanning the crowd for her team. Upon spotting them, she warps close by to avoid wading through any crowds, just in time to hear Inkredible’s question about the Man-tis.

"And while we’re talking about that monster, I’m curious if y’all have seen anything like it before."

Having reappeared a few feet to Miller’s left, she says this to him as she takes a seat with Inkredible and Flux. She starts looking around at the surrounding media members kind of nervously as she awaits Miller’s response.

Anne is allowed to board the Hazardous Material Recovery Unit. The interior is refrigerated lined up with polymer bags, containing the remains of her copies. All of them were tagged, closed, and stacked at the back. Where she rides as well, together with two men in sealed white suits sitting on the bench across from her.

They don’t talk, or give her their names, nor do they ask for hers. They treat her, unsurprisingly, as one of the ‘public health issues’. After all....the samples they collected all looked exactly like her. A few minutes later, the call finally comes in. One of them takes out his phone, gives it a quick look, nod at the other man, then hands the phone to Anne.

It’s a video call, and on the screen is a woman in her mid forties.

"Hello. I’m Agent White. Global Defense Agency" she waits for a bit, then continues "I’ve been told you requested incineration. That you used the words public health issue. I need you to tell me, in your own words, what you know about this biohazard. Starting with why those remains cannot go to a city morgue."

"Power Posse" officer Miller repeats the name, committing it to memory. He then looks at Inkredible "do you have your own call name...?" it would be easier to know how to call each of them. When Showstopper appeared out of thin air, he takes a step back in surprise, before gathering his composure

"Umm. Hello ma'am. Thank you. For saving the day"

He then goes back to Inkredible's question.

"No. We’ve never seen anything like that. Omni-Man took out a kaiju outside San Francisco a few months back, but that creature was huge; dwarfing this creature over here. And Kaiju don't have faces, or hair, or look anything human" he shakes his head "Can't tell where it came from either. It didn’t walk up Chippewa, I can tell you that. Maybe it flew in. Leapt in. Or even got dropped by someone. Didn't talk with any witnesses yet, or checked the street cameras" he glances at the vans, and the kids behind them

"I don't know if that is something you can help us with too; finding where it came from. Even if we do find out, I think it might be beyond the capabilities of the police force to handle"

Annette frowns at Agent White.

"Sure, White. Two reasons. One," she gestures at the dead Anne-Tibodies off-camera, "I'd argue the last thing you'd want is remains from a superhuman who can duplicate herself to get into the wrong hands. Fighting Man-tis was hard enough, could you imagine a swarm of Man... -tii? Whatever the plural of Man-tis is. And two, how secure do you think the city morgue is? I know a person who can teleport through dimensions."

She shakes her head, "No, my bodies need to be incinerated. Immediately. And I recommend having this protocol in place whenever the Power Posse have to battle a superhuman. In fact... what are you going to do with Man-tis' remains?"

Annette doesn't tell her about the tissue sample of Man-tis she has in her lab coat.

Agent White
"We can’t keep following you around forever, bagging every drop of blood you leave on a street." Agent White says, with no subtle hint of annoyance in her voice. She doesn't answer Anne's question about the Man-tis remains

"I'm going to need to advise with director Stedman on this" she says after she had some time to consider this "In the meantime, enjoy the ride. We'll talk in person once you're at the GDA facility" the screen then goes dark. One of the men in the Hazmat suits reaches with his hand, silently requesting for his phone back.
Sep 22, 2026 5:42 am
Annette hands the Hazmat Man's phone back.

They're bringing her to the GDA Facility? She stares at the two silent Hazmat Men sitting across from her who were staring back at her.

She wasn't sure how to feel about their destination.

After a moment of thought, Annette shrugs. She didn't have Showstopper's teleportation power anymore even if she wanted to leave. Her power to copy powers only lasted a few minutes and she was too far away from Showstopper to copy it again.

The GDA protected Earth from all kinds of crises. Maybe she'd tell them about the Institute and the Anti-Superhuman virus in her that she'd naively helped create.

If the GDA didn't already know.

Annette takes out her own phone and sends a message to the Power Posse's Group Chat:

With GDA, heading to GDA Facility to incinerate my bodies. Might be a while.

"-ooooor that works too." The armored figure feigns both a state of disappointment, as well as the act of playing it off, drooping their head and quickly snapping back to attention.

"There's nothing more we can ask of you than your continued vigilance, officer. Except perhaps, a case or two of Brawndo to help the boys in blue stay awake behind the desk. But worry not! We of the Power Posse will be doing our part to squash bugs like this before they can show up to menace good folk like the passengers of that bus again! Or at least, make sure the next one is nowhere near as huge! Or human."

Inkredible looked at his arm as if to confer with it over permissions to unveil classified intelligence. More so he was debating if the name he thought up on a whim was cool enough to begin spreading it around.

"Call me..uh..Ink..redible. Yeah, that works. Inkredible."

He nodded as if to seal the decision further. Yep, confidence truly befitting a hero. But besides all that, seemed the officer didn't have the info on what went on. Big bugs dont make themselves spontaneously. There had to be a source. If the officer hadn't seen anything. Maybe someone else had.

"Think you could get me a few questions with the bus driver? Maybe they saw the drop off. If there's someone shipping in problems. Might be something we can check in on."

Inkredible, Showstopper, Brawndo Man

"Appreciate it" Officer Millers tells Brawndo Man. He is sure there is some department policy about accepting gifts from...civilians. But department policies also didn’t just save sixty+ kids from becoming a giant bug's lunch. He didn’t argue with the man with an arm cannon. They will find out later what to do with these couple of cases of energy drink

He then nods to Inkredible "Yes. That’s a good idea. Lets go talk with the driver"

He walks you across the lot. The kids are mostly gone now. The bus sits with the door still open, a torn hold in its roof. Th driver is standing by the curb, already talking with the police. Cameras taking photos from a distance. All of them make a little space for you when you arrive, and allow you to interview Mr. Kowalski.

He repeats what he told the other officers; that the giant Man-tis just came down from the skies. It landed right in front of the bus, and his eyes...weren’t hungry at first. They were glassy, like in a trance... Only a moment later it suddenly snapped, looked around, and attacked the school bus, while before he completely ignored it

The van stops. The back doors open, and Anne finds herself inside a compound with high concerete walls surrounding her and a second fence inside the first. Armed GDA troops on the outer permietere, clad in body armor and helmets with visors down. The two men in the sealed Hazmat suit stands up, and start offloading the crates and samples of the dead tissue.

Agent White, in person, is standing right there, watching her.

"Welcome. I spoke with Director Stedman on the way, and he decided to approve your request. The remains will be incinerated in the primary furnace" she pointed behind her "No samples will be retained from your tissue" it didn’t look like she agreed with the decision, but she had her orders.

Behind White, more techs in darker suits were rolling the carts toward the bay. White watches them, then turns back to look at Annete
"Director Stedman did have a request to make of you, however" she stops, then adds "we have samples from the Man-tis recovered from the scene. Would you like to assist examining them" she then pauses, before adding "Dr. Tibody?

Annette watches the Techs transport her bodies to the primary furnaces. The GDA seemed very professional and efficient.

She turns back to Agent White and gives a small relieved smile. She didn't feel the need to follow the Techs.

"I'd be glad to help in any way I can with the examination of the creature's remains. And 'Dr Tibody' is fine, thank you for that."

"Listen-" The bombastic demeanor of Brawndo Man falls away for a moment, though the mask stays as inscrutable as ever. "-you said it was inert, like in a trance, was it?" They tilt their head towards the bus driver. "If there's anything or anyone you might have noticed that might have been holding the reins so to speak...don't hesitate to let us know. But you've already done a lot to help us."

With that said, they puff up their chest again, volume increasing once more. "Ahh, a mastermind was behind this attack, no doubt!" They nod to Showstopper. "Listen here, cowpoke! If you don't mind letting the smokin' Dr. Tibody know (because I've yet to be patched into your comms), tell her to keep an extra sharp eye out for any electronic devices or narcotic substances in the remains of the Man-tis! That might give us a lead to whoever's been controlling it! See, that's what happens when you try to get your fix with anything other than the healthiest beverage on the market!"

As this conversation with the bus driver was happening, Showstopper had heard bits and pieces, but spent her time orbiting the bus and looking at her surroundings.

"Yeah, yeah, I’ve gotcha covered partner, I’ll relay the important stuff."

She says this nonchalantly, as she takes out her phone to text Annette. She sends the first text lightning quick, but sends the next more slowly as her focus largely returns to her investigation.

just heard Brawndo Man call you "smokin’", followed by an obnoxiously long string of winking and eyes emojis.

About 3 minutes later

oh bt dubs, let us know if you find any weird shit in those Man-tis remains, like electronics or something. We think it might’ve been controlled, punctuated with a few thinking emojis.

With Brawndo Man’s message relayed, she puts her phone back into her pocket, puts her hands on her hips, and starts thinking aloud and mumbling to herself.

"Landed right in front of the bus… hmm I wonder if there’s any chance of some kinda clue dropping with it. Or maybe, if it was controlled, the controller was nearby and left some kinda evidence? Or what if…"

She continues investigating the area around the bus, mumbling semi-coherent theories to herself as she continues to think aloud.

Showstopper

Showstopper looks around the bus. Then, by hunch, she looks at the garbage bins not too far away. One of them has its lid off, garbage overflowing. Easy to overlook, and the police haven’t (and wouldn’t) ever considered looking inside. The sanitation crew would take the whole thing tomorrow morning, and would have missed what’s inside.

And there was something inside!

Under the dirty diaper and rotting vegetables, she fishes out a plastic box. It is the exact cheep shape of a cockroach bait station (and in a sense, it is), and that, too, would have gone out with the rest of the trash. But it is missing a logo. The seams are too clean. When she turns it, something inside ticks. And the smell is stronger off the thing when it is was inside the bin.

Pheromones?

Pheromones!!

Pheromones designed in a lab. A scent that attracted the flying Man-tis like a beacon.

It wouldn’t be a leap of logic to assume that whoever dropped this scent-box into the nearby garbage bin intended to draw the Man-tis here, and since that pheromones-scent was purposely designed to do so, he (or she) must have been involved in the monster’s creation.

What do you do now?
Sep 23, 2026 3:19 pm
Anne-Tibody

Dr. Tibody is shown to the bio lab, and handed a white suit, complete with a hood and gloves. Everyone inside are wearing the same, with only name tags to tell one from the other on their chests. She goes through the airlocks, and a sealed door, and shown to her station.
The crew are already examining the remains from the Man-tis under microscopes, talking with each other through comms installed inside their suits.

You look under the microscope at your sample. You zoom in. The cells look like human, at first glance, a closer look shows how wrong they are. Then she finds it. The retrovirus. An infectious replicator going from cell to cell, rewriting its DNA, inserting insect genetic material through the human genome.

Anne feels a chill creep down her back.

This retrovirus is sophisticated, and has very familiar ‘fingerprints’ on it. It was designed a lab. A lab like the one she used to work at, before she escaped...

What do you do?
OOC:
this information is relatively easy to gleam and lets say it took a couple of hours. You can continue studying the retrovirus, but it could take additional days and weeks of time
Sep 23, 2026 9:41 pm
Annette sits back from the microscope, her eyes wide with horror in realisation.

The Institute...

She quickly leaves her station, going through the decontamination process, before finally exiting the airlocks.

She messages the Power Posse's Group Chat:

I've examined Man-tis' remains. The Institute created Man-tis, transforming a man using insect DNA, with a virus. I'll be here at the GDA for a few more days or weeks.

Then she finds Agent White to tell her what she'd already told the Power Posse about the origin of her superpowers when they'd first become a superhero team.

"Agent White, my real identity is Dr Annette Brody. Six months ago, I was hired to assist an organisation called The Institute to create a powerful virus that would be a universal cure for all diseases. Unfortunately, I discovered too late that the virus could also be used to kill anyone with superpowers. I injected the only copy of the incompleted virus into myself, then fled, so I could personally research a cure to this virus, because I knew it would only delay the Institute's own continued research to recreate this virus, not stop them."

Annette gestures at her station where that sample of Man-tis was still under her microscope.

"Man-tis has a retrovirus that is rewriting DNA, inserting insect genetic material into its... his human genome. He was a man before he became... that monster. This retrovirus bears the same signature markers as the virus I developed for the Institute. Different, but related."

She takes a breath.

"Agent White, my powers come from the interaction of my immune system and antibodies to the virus I'm still infected with. That's why my dead Anne-Tibodies must always be incinerated. I must stay here and continue researching this related virus to find out everything I can about this new virus, every little detail is important, however long it takes. It could help me with the cure."

She looks pleadingly at Agent White. "The GDA must find and stop The Institute."

Running back over to the present members of the Posse, Showstopper regales them with information on the clue she found and her theory that someone used it to lure the Man-its here.

"Still not really sure who the culprit may be, I don’t see any identifiers on this thing, but it’s a start! By the way, any of y’all carry around sanitizer or alcohol wipes? The place I found the clue was kind of- oh? Hold on a minute…"

It’s at this time that she received Annette’s message. She hesitates for a moment, clearly not eager to touch her phone right after digging through trash, but quickly grabs the phone anyways with a sigh.

"Woah… y’all get this? Sounds like Anne-Tibody’s made a huge discovery too! Here, I’ll send her our findings while I’m at it."

Showstopper then takes a few moments to send a new message to the group chat, detailing the bait station, pheromones, and its clear purpose in bringing Man-tis here. After putting her phone away, she claps her hands with a plan in mind.

"Alright buckaroos, how ‘bout this? I’m mighty curious about what sidewinder planted this thing, or if it were originally somewhere else and someone threw it out? We got a lead on who made it, but I wanna see who exactly placed it. I reckon we oughta see if there’s security cam footage we could review. After that, rendezvousing with Anne-Tibody and her peers could be nice to go over all our findings. How do y’all feel about that? Suggestions? Objections? And Officer uhh… Miller, right? Any chance you could help us with the security footage, if there is any?"

"An excellent plan, gunslinger! I was just about to suggest that myself! Ha!" Hand on their hip nonchalantly, Brawndo Man lets out an exaggerated laugh. "Why, just hook us up to the computer and-" They take a moment to look around conspicuously. "-anyone bring a computer? We aren't supposed to work on something like that with our phones, are we? Wait, hold on..."

Raising the index finger of their left hand dramatically, an interface port pops out of the tip with a shnk. "Of course! How could I forget! "Wait. You’re telling me that the virus in your blood can kill any superpowered being? Any?? No matter how they got their powers? Sorcerers? Genetic experiments? Accidents? Aliens from another planet???" she finds it too incredulous to believe.

She glances back through the glass at her lab, and at the piece of the Man-tis on the table

"Nevermind that for now. Our first priority should be finding a cure for the retrovirus. God forbid this hits the city’s water supply, or goes airborne. The GDA facilities are at your disposal. We’ll give you a room as well if you need, for as long as it takes"

Brawndo Man, Inkredible, Showstopper

Showstopper scans the area, and she quickly manages to locate a camera pointing at the service alley that led to the open dumpster. It belongs to a local connivence store. Officer Miller whistles something about her ‘good eyes’ with awe, as he leads the officers towards the shop to retrieve the footage.
OOC:
Giving Showstopper the credit for finding the camera because she had an exceptional success on her previous intuition roll. However – scanning the footage from the last couple of days to find the exact minute someone tossed something that looks like the Man-tis beacon into the trash, and narrowing down the list of suspects could take days. Unless – one of you wants to roll a Reason check to speed things up and immediately find the suspect in the footage. @Nellancholy , you can use Brawndo Man’s technology focus for that roll if you want (that roll can be pushed as well, as normal). If any of you do score a success, feel free to describe how the person on the footage looked like.

"Ah! A member of the Brawndo Squad! Fuel your brawn!" Brawndo Man nods approvingly at the cans of Brawndo included in the coolers of the convenience store, striking a thumbs-up pose and uttering the catchphrase that matches a poster on the wall. Unbeknownst to anyone, the armor looks identical, but the person within it is very different...

"I'm always hyped to keep members of the Squad safe so we can all get cranked up in peace! All the people of this city are under my protection, but especially the Squaddies. Now, let's see if we can't find any traces of our little litterbug..."

Holding their palm down, they jab their index finger into the interface port of the computer that holds the footage...

"..." They flip their hand palm up, inserting the plug in properly this time.

"Curses! This little tin can is a little more sneaky than I thought! Even my intensive analytical algorithm is having trouble keeping track of them! I assure you, this time I'll get it..." Clearly, getting an ID on the suspect in a timely manner is a lost cause, but Brawndo Man isn't quite persuaded of that.

Annette nods to Agent White, thinking back.

"I was approached by a woman calling herself Ms Masters. She said she represented a group called The Institute who were researching a universal cure for any disease. I accepted. Maybe I was naive, but... I thought I was going to be part of something that would change the world. For the better."

She focuses again on what Agent White wants to know.

"I lived in their underground lab. I didn't know it was underground, until I escaped. They brought me in sedated so I wouldn't know where it was. I worked with their head scientist, a Dr Appelquist. When I escaped, I discovered I was somewhere in the Ozarks. That's all I can give you, Agent White. Ms Masters, Dr Appelquist, and the Ozarks."

She shakes her head. What a fool she was, well-meaning or not.

"The virus I developed was what they were calling Stage 2. It was incomplete when I took it, but no less potent. I have to take regular doses of an Anti-Viral Booster I developed to temporarily help my immune system combat it, but the virus is still inside me. I do not know what Stage 1 was, or how many other Stages the Institute had planned. Man-tis could be a part of this design or a parallel project."

Annette's eyes light up. "Perhaps check for other missing scientists? Any who've disappeared or who've told their families they're on extended work projects off the grid!"

"That's enough. You already did plenty. We wouldn't have the beacon, or this camera footage, if it wasn't for you. Live it for us now. We will send the footage to our labs, have people watch every second of it. We will find out suspect, sooner or later"

Agent White types some notes on her phone as Anne talks. "You want to tell me you spent six months underground, after they brought you down there fully sedated, and you haven't thought they might be up to no good?" she sighs softly to herself "alright. I'm going to need some physical description of this Appelquist, and anyone else working in that lab. Age, voice, accent. How they entered the room How often you saw them. Anything you can think of"

She then started with a long string of other questions. How did Anne escape? What was the nearest settlement she reached? The conversation becomes a debriefing before long, with more and more questions, and every answer just begets more of them.

When there was nothing left more to say, White turns off her phone and slips it into her pocket "I'll see what HQ can make of this. Maybe track some other missing scientists. An operation like the one you're describing has to leave some footprints. Medical shipments. Supplies. We'll track them down. That's what we do"

She nods to Anne "Let me know if you need anything from me, or if anything else comes back; a face, the road, even the serial numbers on a lab equipment. anything can help. Until then; I'll leave you to your work"

Annette smiles at Agent White. The relief of working with an organisation like the GDA to stop the Institute filled her with hope.

"Thank you," she tells her.

Annette heads back to the airlock doors, duplicating herself to the exact number needed to fill the available stations inside, to continue studying the Man-tis retrovirus together for however many days and weeks it takes.

Either to help her cure the incomplete Stage 2 anti-superhuman virus in her to cure future Institute viruses or to help the GDA find the Institute.

The Anne-Tibodies turn back to Agent White.

"Don't worry," one of Anne-Tibodies says.

"It's only the dead Annettes we can't reabsorb back," another Anne-Tibody says.

Then the Anne-Tibodies file into the airlock one by one.

Inkredible eyes Brawndo Man and the business card. He hadn't really thought of a good way to have direct contact with anyone really. He did have a personal phone, but that would be traceable to a real identity, and there was no doubt the cops would have that access if they felt nosy. If this sponsored super was going to play into their group. They might as well play it back where it suited.

"Figure if one of the group is informed, that will work well enough. The liaison can be the point of contact. At least for now. We'll leave you to it. Sooner this gets sorted the safer for everyone. Oh, and Brawndo."

He places a hand on the draft punk's armored shoulder.

"Got somethin' work related to discuss. Come on."

He leads them away from the scene and into a nearby alleyway between buildings before turning to address the topic at hand.

"Appreciate the help. So take this in a good way when I ask who the hell are you? And don't give me that sponsored bullshit."

Brawndo Man looked like quite the sight, being led along like a kid while clomping along in a suit of armor. As the inky figure turns to question them, they slump dramatically.

"And here I didn't take you for the type to ask questions after shooting. Especially considering what a good first impression I made! Well, I wouldn't want to leave a promising new partnership in doubt..."

Touching their left index finger to the "ear" of their helmet and turning it like a key, a distinctive gashunk rings out. The tinted visor fades slightly, just enough to reveal a pair of wide, dark brown eyes. The speaker's modulating effect turns off, though the speaking voice is still somewhat muffled.

"Call me...Kenny. Haven't been talked to like a regular person since my last tour of duty. Came back four years ago, minus some fairly essential parts and a Purple Heart to my name. Got a little worried about how I was gonna send my girl to college..."

They fold their arms, leaning against the wall. "Lucky for us, Brawndo was looking for a brand new PR initiative because the old stunts were getting stale, and they wanted someone with expertise, experience, and strength of character." Lifting their arm, they nonchalantly point their thumb at themselves. "When they called me, I didn't need to think too hard about it. We needed the money, and it wasn't some grinding desk job. I just want to fight the good fight, like I'm sure you do. So them giving me a way to do so despite my injuries? Of course I'd say yes."

"Look, my service history in the Army and as Brawndo Man should bear me out. I've been on every screen in the country for the last three- last four years. You know I'm good for it. Come on, let's bring it in." Standing up straight, they take two steps towards Inkredible, opening their arms for a hug.

Another pause. "Uh, this'll probably be better. So, team?" They hold out their metal arm for a handshake.

Showstopper stood by, watching Brawndo Man work while feeling unsure where they should even begin with the footage. She silently tried to think of ideas, but ultimately felt it was best to leave this with Officer Miller when he volunteered to have his team look through it. The police did have people trained for this sort of thing, after all.

Feeling like all they could do now was wait, she took out her phone and sent a message to an old friend of hers, Roman Barnett.

yoo u wouldn’t believe the day I’ve had, r u busy rn? gonna try that coffee shop on jefferson avenue in like an hour, swing by if u have the time

Having sent the invitation, she glances back up at the security monitor and then over at Inkredible as he’s leading Brawndo Man out of the building. Yeah, things’ll be fine here, I think we could all use a break, she thinks to herself before also walking towards the door. Although… I probably oughta clue the rest of the team in…

hey gang, gonna take a lil bit to unwind after everything that went down earlier. when y’all want to link up or if somethin comes up in the meantime, drop a time and location and I’ll be there

The image of the grinning bearded skull on Sump's Coffee storefront is probably why your former associates liked meeting up here; whenever they did had an itch for caffeine rather than stronger stuff. It's pretty quite inside, other then the baristas, there are only a couple of other people in line, one of them is staring at his phone which shows a newsreel of a monstrous creature over a school bus.

Roman texted you that he would be happy to meet you and shoot the breeze. He walks in a short minute after ou, a tall black man with braids and shades still on, even though it is late in the afternoon. He spots you, and a smile forms at the corner of his mouth.

"How's it going, girl?" he tips his shades a bit, as he closes the distance "You're looking fine. It's been a minute"

GDA Facility

Inside the containment lab, the Anne-Tibodies study the tissue samples of Man-tis.

One of the Anne-Tibodies sits back. She's exhausted. She looks to another Anne-Tibody, who's also exhausted.

"Break?" she asks.

The other Anne-Tibody nods. "Coffee."

"And a donut!" another Anne-Tibody in the lab calls out.

"We're on a diet!"

All the Anne-Tibodies reabsorb until only one Anne-Tibody is left. This one is now Annette. She goes through decontamination and exits the airlocks.

She gets a coffee, eyes the donuts, but walks away to check her messages and sees Showstopper's. She was right, today was crazy. Battling a giant half-human half-mantis creature. Annette was still hurt from the battle. And so, so tired.

She downs the rest of her coffee quickly, zips herself back into her hazmat suit, duplicates, and the Anne-Tibodies head back into the containment lab.

The Insitute weren't going to take a break from their evil plan that Annette had, in part, contributed to.

So the Anne-Tibodies wouldn't stop until they stopped the Institute.

Agent White
Annete

"Doctor"

Agent White stepped out of the side hall and put herself between the Annette and the path to the airlock.

"You’ve been working ever since you've arrived at this facility. It's late, you have not slept, or eaten anything. You haven't even checked the quarters we set for you. There is a bed in them, you know. A shower "

Agent White keeps her voice measured: "Go rest. You can resume you work in the morning' she motions with her head towards the opposite corridor, and something in her tone of voice indicates this isn't a suggestion.

The Anne-Tibodies look at Agent White, then at the empty lab stations inside the containment lab, then back at the GDA Agent again.

They reabsorb into a single Annette. She frowns at Agent White hard.

"And who's going to continue studying the Man-tis samples while I'm eating? Or in the shower? Or sleeping? No matter how many scientists you have, the only edge you have against the Institute is me. You lose that if I'm not working for any reason, Agent White."

She gestures at the containment lab, "In fact, you need more labs. The more of me you have working, the better our odds are of finding something that will help us stop the Institute!"

Inkredible removes his mask and takes up the offered hand.

"Kenny huh? Since when does a beverage corp have the funds or knowhow to make a suit like that?"

Whether Brawndo could feel it within the suit or not, he squeezes the hand hard, vice hard.

"I'm Shawn. Don't usually see military sorts wanting to hug it out either."

After a moment of searching the partially veiled eyes within the helm, he releases his grip and affixes his mask once more.

"Whatever, for what it's worth I get it. Gotta do what you can to survive. Hell, we can do more than that now. If you're serious about being part of the Posse. We usually meet up for a meal at Lemp Mansion. Next time we gather I can get ahold of that liaison of yours. Got another of those cards?"
