Act I: Arrival
The trip across the Atlantic had been bad enough before the ley lines went wild.

One moment, the Avenger Armaments convoy had been making reasonable time toward Europe. The next, the horizon lit up with sheets of blue-white energy as a ley line storm rolled across the convoy. Communications dissolved into static. Navigation systems went haywire. Ships vanished behind walls of unnatural light, and for a while it was impossible to tell whether anyone outside your own vessel was still alive.

By the time the storm finally passed, the convoy was scattered.

There was no way to know what had happened to the other team. If they survived, they had their own objectives and would have to continue without you. For now, there was no going back to look for them.

The New Navy carried you the rest of the way.

Hours later, the low silhouette of the European coastline appeared through the mist, and the Navy crew brought their vessel as close to shore as they were willing to risk. A small landing craft took you the rest of the way, its engines whining as it pushed through the cold gray water toward what, at first glance, looked like a broad white beach.

It wasn't sand.

The ramp drops with a metallic crash.

Beyond it stretch miles of pale, glittering dunes made from countless fragments of crystal. Some pieces are little more than coarse grains underfoot. Others rise from the ground in jagged clusters large enough to catch the overcast light and throw it back in muted flashes of blue, violet, and silver. The wind moving across them produces a faint, irregular chiming sound.

Behind you, the Atlantic rolls against the crystalline shore.

Ahead lies Europe.

The New Navy sailors waste little time unloading your equipment. Their orders don't include establishing a beachhead, and nobody aboard seems particularly interested in remaining this close to an unfamiliar coastline any longer than necessary. Crates hit the ground. Weapons and packs are passed down. Final checks are made.

Then the landing craft pulls away.

Within a few minutes, you are alone on the beach.

According to the intelligence supplied by Erin Tarn, the nearest significant settlement is **Vitré**, some distance inland. Tarn's information describes it as an influential community by local standards, home to a mixture of humans and D-Bees, and, perhaps most importantly, one of the places in this part of Europe known to be friendly toward outsiders.

At least, it was when the information was gathered.

Between you and Vitré lie unfamiliar territory, crystalline dunes, and whatever Europe has become since the coming of the Rifts.

For the moment, though, the coast is quiet.

The wind moves through the crystals.

Somewhere far inland, something gives a long, distant cry.

Welcome to Europe.

"Ohh, look at the pretty flashes." the small (for a) dragon rumble as she helps fly supplies well above the waterline. "Such a pretty beach after that nasty storm."

She lands on a sturdy looking purple crystal that contrasts with her orange-red scales.

"Which way are we going?"
Sep 13, 2026 3:11 pm
Ever cautious, Stiener was taking stock of the offloaded supplies into his field computer. "Judging by what we have here, Vitré would be my vote. Do a soft probe and handshake, figure out what sort of fresh hell we have washed in on."

He continues checking through crate labels as he answers, swearing occasionally as he evidently looks for something specific.

Aliouna carries little, her gear consists of a few weapons and a backpack, and she leaves behind what she doesn't need. Her body is covered with tattoos, every patch of skin adorned with these artistic symbols, and she leaves her skin bare enough to show them all.

As the boat nears the coast, she gently touches the tattoo of an owl on her thigh, and draws her lifeforce out through it. The tattoo fares to nothing and upon her forearm an owl purchases. She seems it aloft into the sky to scout the trees and possibly signs leading to the inland village, in a direction other than where the dragon flies.

"This land is different than where I came before. I do not recognize the crystalline beach. I will help search for the way forward." She's a proud warrior of few words, yet companionable enough. Her eyes follow the dragon, admiration for the magnificent creature plain on her face.

When they're on the beach, she helps lift what needs carrying when the boat departs she waves at her New Navy friends, aware she may never see them again. She's spent time with the navy even before finding the Tomorrow Legion, and knows their ways better than she does these strange heroes she's accompanying.

Jax waits impatiently as the others of unit alight on the beach and start poking around. He waits more impatiently for the initial gear to be moved, and then for the squids to unsecure Mandy. He'd already double checked her systems and loadout before they'd loaded her onto the landing craft. He'd double checked the bindings keeping her in place, even though he'd watched them secure her. There was nothing wrong with them; he'd just been nervous about the mission. Europa. So very far from home and what was familiar.

As soon as they had things clear and the bindings released Jax got to work getting ready. The boat was almost fully unloaded by the time he'd gotten Mandy out of transport mode, climbed inside and finished his systems checks. After giving the audible warning advising those nearby to clear the immediate area, Jax blasts out of his loudspeaker, "Thanks for the lift squids! Enjoy the rest of your cruise!" After ensuring noone remains close, Jax takes two ponderous steps towards the front of the lander away from the remaining kit, and engages is jumpjets.

Leaving the lander rocking, Jax sailed out over the surf zone and lands a good way up the beach in a shower of crystaline sand and shards. He'd planned his jump so as not to be a danger, but the light pelting of smaller debris which peppered the Dragon was definitely on purpose. It made for a beautiful tableau with the sparkles against Una's scales, the gray and white waves breaking on the crystal shore... After saving the clip to his album, he squaked with faux chagrin, "Oh! Excuse me, Una!" and miming thumbing his nose at the Dragon, Jax trudged a few more steps up the beach and set to work.

He began the standard scans using his STS, starting with the beach area ahead and then extending along either side out to maximum distance. He gave a cursory inspection of the sea and shore; he hoped the squids would be good for at least that before they go. They had said they didn't detect any thing significant; whatever that meant. Visual first, then another pass with thermals while he engaged his radar for a few 360 degree sweeps. He assumed anyone who could see him would have already been aware of carrier and landing craft anyway. If they could tell what he was, maybe that would make them more "friendly" in any case.

"Fascinating." Sid'Charon exclaimed in wonder, at seeing the crystalline beach. This was the first word he had uttered since going onboard the boat, his focus entirely taken up by the 1,058 page tome in front of him, "A Brief History of Europa".

Once arrived, he carefully stowed the tome away, then helped carry the heaviest cargo onshore. As the others talked he worked on acquiring a few samples of the crystal into test vials for study later, his gigantic hands delicately gathering various sizes and colors.

Finished, his attention steered back to his companions. They all seemed well chosen, but he was particularly excited by the dragon. He had consulted for and worked with an elder dragon, but never a babe. To be so close to it's imprinting stage felt like an honor, and he was certainly curious how the elements of nature vs. nurture would handle themselves during this journey.

"The Captain is correct, Vitre is the obvious choice." the Vronwar chimes in. Hearing his agitation, "Do you need assistance finding something?"
Sep 14, 2026 6:48 am
The dragon turns to look as the Glitter Boy hits the crystal 'sand' and sprays her with fragments. "Still pretty, and tickles a little." She says, with a low rumbling sound that might be a laugh.

She spreads her wings and flies up a little, "I'm going to have a smell around and see if there's anything hiding nearby."

Staying reasonably low, just high enough to see over the surrounding dunes, she flies in an expanding spiral for a few moments before landing again.

Is there some kind of omen in the first roll of a campaign being a critical failure?

The first sign of Vitré comes before the town itself.

Aliouna’s owl spots the smoke from above, a dark streak rising beyond the trees. Una catches the smell soon after. Burned wood, scorched earth, and something sharper underneath it.

The way inland proves easier to follow than expected. Between the old road, the expedition maps, and what the group can see from above, it does not take long before Vitré comes into view.

Something happened here recently.

Part of the outer wall has been blown inward, leaving a ragged breach wide enough for a vehicle to pass through. Smoke still curls from a handful of buildings inside, and people move through the streets carrying buckets, pulling debris aside, and searching through damaged homes.

A few townsfolk notice the group and stop what they are doing. Some stare at Una. Others look longer at Mandy. A couple of hands drift toward weapons before someone spots the Tomorrow Legion markings and calls out to the others.

That seems to ease things, at least a little.

https://i.imgur.com/7aVSAu7l.jpeg
There are wounded everywhere. Some are already being treated, others are sitting in the street waiting for help. Near the breach, several people are trying to shift a heavy roof beam off a collapsed doorway. Farther in, a bucket line is struggling to keep another fire from spreading.

Whatever happened here, the fighting is over for the moment.

Vitré still needs help.
OOC:
Everyone can take an action to help around town before things settle down enough to get a clear account of what happened. First aid, rescue work, firefighting, organizing people, searching damaged buildings, checking tracks, scanning the area, or anything else that makes sense is fair game. Use whatever skill fits what your character is doing.

Seeing the damage, the dragon speaks, keeping her voice low. "Maybe I should be human before they see..." seeing the eyes of the village on her, "me? Ah, well, for next time. At least their hands have moved away from their weapons, most people freak out the first time they see my kind. Maybe they've seen a dragon before."

Seeing the fires in the village, she takes to the air and flies towards them. Being a fireproof giant of a creature, she lands gently and helps search to make sure no one is trapped or endangered by the fires and does what she can while she is there. During her transit in the air, she will take another look around with her magical senses (because that worked so well the first time.)
OOC:
A better roll (though still giving the die roller a side-eye). Should be able to see magic if it's around.

Stiener seeing the chaos snaps into his military training and begins attempting to organize the civilians as they fight the literal and metaphorical fires. "Put down those bricks! You can’t repair a wall while it is one fire! You, that man needs help over there! You lot.." He starts attempting to direct the civilians like a platoon, barking orders and offering hands on demonstrations. He focuses on attempting to better form the scrambling civilians into task force squads to ensure efforts are applied to critical issues and infrastructure. "Come on people! Let’s get some hustle going!

Aliouna is more warrior than anything else, a survivor of terrible forces. She's also a revolutionary, raised in a society oppressed by cosmic evil, and protecting the weak is a way of life.

"Gather the wounded away from the fires. We'll help as we can." She's strong, but can be stronger, strong enough to lift the heaviest beams and free trapped persons. She raises a knee and swipes at a tattoo of a broken chain on the bare skin of her right thigh. Her strength swirls, magic bolstering her thews.

She grabs anyone not engaged in critical rescue efforts. "Lead me to the worst, the most collapsed of it and tell us who attacked your village."

With everyone rushing about, Sid'Charron takes a moment to center himself around all the chaos. A quote from Thích Nhất Hanh comes to mind, "Smile, breathe, and go slowly."

Seeing the decimated town, Jax slows as the others move forward to aid those in town. It looks like things ended a while ago, but he engages his sensors to do a full sweep of the area in any case.

As he approaches the breach, he stops to look to see if he can gauge how it was achieved. Explosives, tracks from an armored vehicle or Brute?

He's distracted by the small fry stuggling with a beam nearby, so he clomps over to help them. Setting the volume to be heard over the din, "Stand aside, people." Looking to ensure he's not going to topple the remaining structure, he grabs the beam with both hands, and shifts it so as to unblock the doorway. "Something sure tore this place up good. What the hell happened?"
OOC:
Jax is looking to see if there is any trace of the assailants (approx direction and distance). At the breach he's looking for how it was done and if there are any tracks indicating what kind of attackers they were. Notice for the scan and survival for poking about near the breach?

Una:A few people definitely tense up when Una comes down near the fires, but that doesn’t last long once it becomes obvious what she’s doing.

Being able to ignore the heat helps. She can get right up to places the villagers are having trouble reaching, moving debris and checking around the damaged buildings without having to worry about the flames the way everyone else does.

At one point she catches movement under part of a collapsed roof and finds a man pinned beneath a beam. He’s hurt and half-conscious, but alive. With Una holding the wreckage up, a couple of villagers are able to drag him clear.

After that, people stop watching her quite so nervously. A few even start pointing her toward places they haven’t been able to check yet.

Her magical senses are a little less dramatic.

There’s magic around, but not anything that seems tied directly to the attack. Vitré has the usual little things here and there, charms, enchanted gear, and the general feel of a place where magic is part of life, but the fires and the broken wall don’t give her any obvious magical residue.

From the air she does get a better look at the damage, though. Most of it seems concentrated around the breach and the streets leading away from it. There are tracks outside the wall as well, leading off toward the woods.

Whoever hit the town didn’t stay long.

Captain Steiner: Steiner’s voice carries well enough, and for a minute people actually do start moving where he points them.

It just doesn’t hold together.

These aren’t troops waiting for somebody to take charge. They’re people trying to put out fires, find family, and figure out who’s still missing. One man Steiner sends toward the wounded turns around when somebody calls his name from a damaged house. A couple of others start on the bucket line, then peel away when they hear someone shouting about a child.

The more Steiner tries to sort people into groups, the more the town keeps pulling them back apart.

What does help is when he stops trying to organize the whole place at once and starts dealing with whatever is right in front of him. Moving a cart out of the way. Getting two people focused on one injured villager. Showing somebody how to brace a damaged doorway instead of just yelling over the noise.

An older man covered in soot eventually gives him a tired look.

"Captain, they’ll listen. Just not all at once."

He glances toward the street, where somebody has started calling out names of the missing.

"Too much happened too fast."

Steiner can see what he means. People are trying to help, but half the town is still waiting to find out who made it through the attack.

Aliouna:The change is immediate enough that the nearest villagers notice, even if they don’t understand exactly what Aliouna just did.

Once they see what she can lift, though, nobody worries much about the details.

A man near one of the worst collapses points her toward a house where part of the upper floor has come down into the street.

"There. Two inside, maybe three. We couldn’t shift it."

With the extra strength behind her, Aliouna can.

She gets enough of the weight off the wreckage for the others to pull one person free, then another. By the time they’re working on the third, a few more townsfolk have started following her lead without being asked twice.

Her question about the attackers gets answers almost as soon as people realize she isn’t going to stop helping while they talk.

"Soldiers. Looked NGR."

Another voice cuts in from behind her.

"Or wanted us to think they were."

A woman helping with the wounded shakes her head.

"There was an explosion first. Then they came through the breach. Fast. Took people when they left."

Somebody nearby adds, quieter,

"Children too."

That changes the mood around the group more than anything else. People stop talking about the damage for a moment and start naming the missing instead.

Sid:Sid takes his time and lets the noise around him sort itself out.

Shouting. Fire. Falling timber. People moving through the streets.

Under all of that, his senses pick up something else.

A heartbeat.

Faint, but steady.

It’s coming from beneath what used to be the front of a house, most of it buried under roof timbers and broken stone. Nobody is working there. From the looks of it, they must have already assumed anyone inside was dead.

Sid points toward the rubble.

"There’s someone alive under there."

One of the villagers looks at him, then at the wreckage.

"You’re sure?"

Another breath. Another heartbeat.

"Yes."

That gets people moving.

As they start clearing debris, Sid catches a second sign of life nearby. Much weaker this time, someone buried farther back under the same collapse. He’s able to guide the rescuers toward both of them instead of having them tear the whole pile apart blindly.

It takes a while, but they eventually pull out a badly injured woman and a boy who can’t be more than ten or eleven. Both are alive.

Once they’re clear, Sid checks the area again. There are plenty of people moving around nearby, but nothing else beneath the rubble that his senses can pick out.

One of the men who helped with the rescue gives him a long look.

"We’d given up on that house."

He glances toward the two survivors.

"Good thing you didn’t."

Jax:Jax’s sensors don’t pick up anything that looks like an immediate threat. Whatever happened here, the attackers are gone.

At the breach, though, there’s plenty left to look at.

The wall didn’t come down from simple impact. The stone is blown outward and inward in places, with blackening and shattered masonry around the center of the break. Whatever made the hole looks a lot more like explosives than something simply smashing its way through.

There’s no clear sign of an armored vehicle coming through it either. No deep tread marks, no gouging from tracks or wheels.

There are footprints, though. A lot of them.

Most are booted, and some are heavy enough that even Jax notices the difference. There are smaller prints mixed in as well, along with the mess left by people moving in a hurry. The trail leads away from Vitré and toward the woods beyond town.

It’s not old.

By the time Jax reaches the collapsed doorway, the people there are still trying to figure out how they’re going to move the beam without bringing more of the structure down.

Mandy makes that part easier.

"Stand aside, people."

They do.

Once Jax has a grip on it, the beam shifts with considerably less drama than the villagers were expecting. A few of them hurry in as soon as there’s room to get through.

His question gets an answer from one of the men nearby.

"Explosion first. Then soldiers came through."

Another villager, still breathing hard from the work, adds,

"Looked NGR."

He glances toward the breach.

"They didn’t stay. Took people when they left."

Someone farther back says,

"Some of the children too."

Once the rescue operations are winding down, the dragon flies down into the town square and begins to shimmer. After a moment, the giant scaly form is gone and in it's place a young woman. She looks about sixteen, her hair the same coppery red as the dragon's scales. She wears a shapeless long coat and a pair of worn combat boots laced so tight it's obvious they're not the right size. She jogs over to where the others are starting to gather.

"I saw some tracks going out of town to the woods. I heard people talking about prisoners. We need to go get them back." She says the last with a kind of certainty that is very reminiscent of a dragon.
Sep 25, 2026 2:12 am
"Does the NGR normally kidnap children?"

The heat blazes on her skin. She's resistant to most kind of, well, anything. I could get another tattoo, one that protects me from flames. Dragonfire, maybe? She doesn't have a tattoo problem, she could quit anytime.

The beams lift in her hands easily, powered as much by her growing rage as her magical might. She almost didn't hear the man speak a response to the NGR insight, but after she tossed a broken cornerstone off of a pile of smoking debris, she turns to him, "What makes you think it was only pretend NGR?"
Sep 25, 2026 6:32 am
Jax follows up the villagers answers with more questions, "NGR? The New German Republic? What would they have against this... place? And why take captives? And children at that?

And why do you say they 'looked NGR'. Do you think they might not be?
"

Truning to look out the breach in the wall, "Well, they can't be too far along with kids in tow. Assuming they keep going in the driection they left here in, what are we going to find out there when we go after them?"

"Bad people. Maybe bad things that aren't people. Bad things that we shouldn't let have kids." The young lady says, staring hard in the direction of the breach in the wall.
Sep 26, 2026 4:32 am
Picking up the others' questions and concerns on his comm devices, his interest is piqued by the mention of a possible ruse with the NGR. The giant levels himself down in front of the villager he assisted, "My understanding is that the NGR are a bastion of hope for humanity in these parts. Tell me, good sir, does this town's destruction and child endangerment seem standard practice for them? Are there any factions nearby opposed to them?"
OOC:
would we have a general understanding of NGR and the other factions here? Or should I roll CK, etc?
