A fine, persistent drizzle dampens your clothes and slicks the muddy ground as you leave Wytchway behind. The sky above is a heavy, leaden gray, and the damp cold nips at your skin. Yet, despite the dreary weather, morale remains incredibly high. Your hearts are light with anticipation, and the air is thick with great expectations for the journey ahead. Your footsteps and muffled chatter echo through a harsh, unforgiving landscape carved with rugged hills and deep, mist-shrouded chasms.
After hours of navigating this steep, mountainous terrain, you finally reach the landmark known as the Hand and Horn. According to your directions, this is where you must turn south.
[ +- ] Map with your movement
However, as you look in that direction, you face your first real challenge. The beaten road continues stubbornly forward, but to the south, there is no visible path at all.

Peering closer through the gray mist at the jagged cliffs, the truth becomes clear. The environment here is unstable, and it appears that a massive landslide in recent decades has completely reshaped the landscape. Tons of fallen rock, earth, and overgrown debris have buried the old trail entirely, leaving you stranded at a dead end with nothing but steep gorges and wild terrain ahead.
OOC:
Dear players I would like you to do two things with your first post in this game thread:
1. Are you cracking jokes to keep morale up, grumbling about the wet boots, or focused and serious on the path ahead? Describe your character's general demeanor right now.
2. Instead of picking a skill, tell me what you actually do. Are you scrambling up the side of the unstable slope to scout from above? Are you probing the base of the rubble with a crowbar or staff to listen for hollow echoes beneath? Are you searching for displaced tree roots that might show where the path used to lead, or trying something completely outside the box?
Add a skill roll you think best represent what could go wrong with your action and please do roll twice - as mentioned in Session 0 I may apply advantage or disadvantage to the roll

Impatient and curious enough to walk at the head of the party, Atticus Harrow is a broad-shouldered tiefling, dressed in a long, dark coat with the collar turned up against the rain. His muted, tan skin is partly obscured by the coat and the neatly kept beard framing his face. Two uneven black horns curl back from his brow, disappearing into thick, dark, wavy hair streaked with silver at the temples. His dark eyes move constantly over the surrounding terrain, and a pipe smoulders between his teeth, smoke mixing with the mist. His worn but well-kept coat billows open in the wind, and rain splashes across the waistcoat underneath. He doesn't seem particularly bothered by the weather, and if anything, the sudden dead end has caught his attention.

He steps closer to the rubble and crouches at its edge. The map comes out of his coat, carefully shielded from the rain, and he compares the terrain around them with what little the old markings reveal.
"Right. That's a touch inconvenient."

Tucking the map away, he steps back from the blocked road and begins following the edge of the rubble, looking for signs of traffic.

"If the old road has been buried for a while, then anyone who has travelled this way since will have had to find another route." He thinks aloud. He looks for flattened grass, disturbed earth, broken branches, footprints, or anything else suggesting that people or animals regularly pass around the obstruction.

His pale blond hair is unkempt and he shakes it out of his face to get a better view of the debris that has covered the former path. He hooks his thumbs in a couple of loops attached near the waist to his leather armor. The loops are really used to hold the small bags tied to them, but it is a convenient habit of posture. The rain does not bother him. he prefers to be outdoors. "Go figure."

A few steps behind the tiefling and the elf walked Garran Veyr, a broad-shouldered human in his thirties. He was dressed in a long leather coat that partially concealed his chainmail. The chainmail rattled softly as he walked. Garran’s hair was ash-blond and reached down to his shoulders. His gaze was watchful, his expression grim. The rain and damp were not much of a bother to him. He had learned to deal with such things after all his years as a soldier. But something about the landscape made him uneasy. He couldn’t shake the feeling that something terrible was waiting for them around the next bend, hidden in the mist.

"Damn these fucking roads," Garran muttered quietly as he took the opportunity to relieve himself on a pile of fallen stones. He trusted that Atticus and Ocelot would find a way.

Krynt walk front leftside of the party, yet Atticus is ahead of him, stubborn and curiosity always infront the roads, that's how every story ends, or succeed, no one knows the tales until they see the future…

He wear a gambeson, leather gauntled, kneepad, all studded everywhere. Daggers and shortsword on his left belt while a quiver full of arrows on his right belt. Yet only everyone notice only is dark brown cloak with burned edge, a sign of the scar of his (and the party's) failures, with silver lines, and a silver insignia that just a decorations. He already carry his longbow on his left because he know there will be ambush, and he know he will ready if this goes sideway, the problem is he's too stubborn for insist there's ambush (but he didn't tell the party yet) What an Irony…
He see retired soldier kicking a rock, a Tiefling reading a map, an elf helping the tiefling, and the other, robe-wearing orc praying for who he didn't know, Krynt grateful that he has a party like them, even though the party look like a toddlers to someone else seeing this party. speaking of party, Krynt's memory is foggy, he didn't know why, he didn't know how he meet the party, who they are, and how our last Adventures was a Disaster... Its foggy, and yet, he know each other… why?
He forget about it (Again, what a irony), and sneakly walk past Atticus who doesn't pay attention on the road, not breaking the stealth, then he look at the road for a sign of lifes, or dangers, lurking arround the roads…

Atticus glances over at the elf, then back towards the slope. "Yeah, go ahead--" he starts, waving Ocelot ahead. Then he mutters under his breath; "Because I don't see a godsdamned thing."

He takes another slow look along the edge of the landslide, paying particular attention to the places where the terrain would offer the easiest route around it. But alas, he wasn't wrong in his own estimation; he truly could not see 'a godsdamned thing'.

"If people have been using this road since the landslide, they won't have gone straight over it. They'll have found the path of least resistance, no?" He takes a drag from his pipe and exhales into the mist. "Or maybe we're the first to come by here in a long time..."

The orc followed the others; his sandalled footsteps slow but steady, his hands folded together beneath his robes, his head bowed. Straps around his robes supported the heavy quarterstaff which rested upon his back. His lips moved but no words were uttered as he silently spoke the prayers taught to him in The House of The Crying God; their recitation filling him with strength and hope. Eventually he looked up, hearing Atticus muttering about inconvenience.

Fang watched silently as the diminutive elf moved to stand beside Atticus but said nothing, his eyes turning first to the broad-shouldered human relieving himself against nearby stones, and then to the cloaked man he knew as Krynt, before looking back at the way forward.

"A journey is more than just footsteps," he said with a smile as Atticus exhaled his pipe smoke. "It is a test of the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of an individual. We will discover a way to move forward and, in doing so, we will discover more about ourselves."

Atticus snorts at those words, cocking his head in Fang's direction.
"Next you'll tell me it's about the journey and not the destination. That the real treasure was the friends we made along the way." He grins.
"I'm sure we'll discover plenty about ourselves, but right now I'd settle for discovering a path through this heap of shit."

He turns back towards the slope, continuing his search along the edge of the rubble. Then, he calls to Fang over his shoulder; "You priestly types are right about many things; but there'll be no preaching your way out of this one, Fang. C'mon, help us look for a way through, or around."
Sep 11, 2026 1:53 pm
Fang snorted in a laugh at Atticus' words. "You jest, Mr Harrow, but there is some truth in that cliched saying." He proceded to nod at what Atticus said next. "One of my fellow Brothers used to say that those who look outwards but cannot see a way to go on should turn their eyes upwards for inspiration. Perhaps such a belief should be applied here."

"Yeah, That makes sense on both counts. I will look around a bit. I will let all of you know if I see anything. Quite an odd collections of folks we make here. For me, a journey is simply the means of moving from one place to another when there is a task at hand. It is the task that takes precedence."

He stands straight and slowly turns in a circle. "To state the obvious, our needed direction has become impassable. We are going to have to fins a way to transverse this gorge or a way around at least part of it. Around is probably the best option but for the delay."

Atticus confidently wipe some dirt on his face to 'blend in with the elements,' sniff the air, and point. 'There!' Then he look to the left. 'No, wait, there!' In seconds, you've accidentally discovered an absolute web of conflicting pathways through the solid rock. You turn to the party with a huge, reassuring smile: 'Good news, team! We have plenty of choices. Bad news... I think we might have to climb backwards.'"

Ocelot points out after some considering that it is not given animal tracks lead to the Scorch of the Red Wyrm, it may or it may as well not

Krynt
With that amazing roll, you successfully hide behind a shrub that is entirely too small for you, yet somehow you pull it off. Pressing your face into the dirt, your senses heighten to a superhuman level. You don't find a path, but you do notice a family of beetles three layers deep in the rubble having an intense domestic dispute.

Fang simply sighs, steps past the debating party, and walks straight into the landslide. You quickly realize the terrain isn't actually dangerous. As long as you don't run, the rocks don't shift. Encouraged, you push deeper and deeper into the gray mist, climbing over mounds of earth and dodging overgrown debris. You go as far as you can until you look back—and realize the party has completely vanished into the fog. You turn back around to look ahead, but the jagged cliffs look identical in every direction. You are standing in a perfectly safe, completely silent pocket of mist... with absolutely no idea which way to go.

Garran ... don't want to admit until it becomes obvious. Party have no idea which way are Threetree Hill.
OOC:
Let me clarify the problem your PCs have faced
There is no endless road ahead… there is no road at all. All you have is a general direction. The map you have is and abstraction - it is not a precise map and you don't have compass You need to find the Threetree hill. You guess it is South-East bet could as well be South-East-East or maybe just south. You could move south-east only to realize after a day ot travel that you are still going same way and see no hill... or maybe you saw the hill but trees were Storm-blown away or just cut off

I would like to insist everyone try to contribute to your party success here. I don't like skill challenges, will not run that per dnd 4.0, but in a similar way I would love to narrate how 2 or 3 PCs actions supplement each other. Please take your time - day or two - and come back with one action/activity your PC would do to help party find the way. And roll 2D20 if you can't and won't come up with a skill/ability check. Thanks .

Garran Veyr straightened his clothes after relieving himself. He looked up toward the landslide, trying to catch sight of where Fang had gone.

"Mr. Fang, do you see anything up there?" he called out. Afterwards, he slowly began climbing up the landslide, hoping to get past it. Perhaps the trail continued a little further down to the southeast.

He had glanced at Atticus’s map with a mixture of curiosity and skepticism. He liked maps, and the thought of a hidden treasure tickled his imagination. But he dared not believe in such dreams. The world he lived in rarely had happy endings — at least not for someone like him. He was one of the few poor bastards who meant nothing. Happy endings were reserved for the rich and the important. His only worth was that he could swing a sword and puncture the lungs of those unfortunate enough to be his master’s enemies. Scenes from the battlefields flashed through his mind.

He panted heavily and stopped for a moment to catch his breath. He hoped the others would assume it was simply the exertion that had left him panting. Was there even a treasure? Who was the raven? One of the gods? Hardly. Why would they care about them? Was this really yet another low point in their adventures?

Atticus studies the map for a moment longer, then looks up at the surrounding hills.
"If we don't find this road, or what's left of it, soon we're going to waste an awful lot of time here arguing about which way to go from here."
MrSaxon says:
"One of my fellow Brothers used to say that those who look outwards but cannot see a way to go on should turn their eyes upwards for inspiration. Perhaps such a belief should be applied here."
The tiefling peers over his shoulder at his orcish companion, raising an inquisitive brow. "That's not a bad idea, actually." He murmurs in a monotone that makes clear his irritation at the fact that he didn't think of it first.
Then, turning back, he gives a short whistle, and his white owl familiar darts from a nearby tree. Atticus closes his eyes, letting his senses meld with hers as her vision opens up above the party. From the ground, he's unable to see much. From above, he can search for anything that might serve as a landmark: a distinctive hill, a cluster of trees, a break in the ridgeline, or anything else that might match the vague description of Threetree Hill or serve as a likely destination for folks passing this way.

He slowly turns in place as the owl circles higher, using her vantage point to get a sense of the surrounding terrain before they commit themselves to a direction.

"Let's see what Octavia thinks."

With this I'm rather trying to fix challenge details to be less confusing, but I will try to apply your rolled ability checks to the narrative
Atticus sits down close his ayes and let owl fly around him, though not more than 100 feet up/away - because he knows - that's the limit of his telepathic ability

While wizard is focused on the big picture Krynt looks for what could he discover at his footprints - after some time he manage to indeed discover something suspicions that turns out to be remains of goblin camp abandoned years ago. He finds enough proof that at least six goblins were camping here more than a day in row.

Meanwhile Garran decide it is faster to walk around to see the word than to look at it from owl's ayes and is rewarded - while owl ayes can only distinguish several miles long border of landslide and forest Garran approaching that border could see something strange - the first few miles of the forest is young - trees are 10-15 feet high, but further there is another border - where the young forest suddenly turns into a normal forest with high trees

When you all get back and share your findings Ocelot suddenly steps forward and announce
I have talked to arhc druid last night, I will leave you to take care of this environment that was unnaturally altered decades ago
And he share the here story - click here to read it

As you take a look at the map with that new knowledge you realize in the map the road from this location to Threetree hill has a big gap
https://i.imgur.com/8Q5Qaqm.png
Who knows - maybe it isn't sloppiness of the the author, but just the opposite

Somewhere there in the forest road will continue but you have no idea where.
OOC:
This is moment where I have no idea how would you be able to find next location other than randomly searching the forest and just waste half a day or more, but I would love anyone to surprise me with a brilliant idea
Sep 14, 2026 11:47 am
Atticus stares at the map for a moment, comparing it with what his familiar and Garran saw, tracing a finger along the vague line where the road should continue. Then, he looks southeast towards the forest and clears his throat to address the others.

"If this whole section was cleared by the landslide, then the road from here on out will be long gone. But the border between this younger wood and the elder might be where we need to look for where it continues. I suggest we head down there to where the young meets the old and trace the border to see if we find it. Meanwhile, I'll send Octavia farther southeast to look for where the forest ends. If she spots the road, she can come back and give us at least a vague direction. Anyone have any better ideas?"

The white barn owl named Octavia circles overhead, awaiting her next instructions.
Sep 14, 2026 11:47 am
After Krynt look at his own footprint, he realize his suspicious instinct is correct, there's an abandoned camp he presumably is goblin taking camping here, years ago. (Clues he found is mismatch rock in circle shape with dark remain of burned stick's ashes inside the circle, a 4 small holes almost forming a small rectangle)

After moved a little bit to the remain of the camp, Krynt shouted to informed his party, plainly, "Guys, i found something interesting here, can you all come here for a second?"
Sep 14, 2026 12:25 pm
Garren nods in agreement with Atticus's idea.

What have you found, Krynt? He stands up and gets ready to follow.
Sep 14, 2026 12:36 pm
"A sign of presumably a goblin's camp." Krynt replied to Garren.

"Hey old man," He shoutly ask Atticus plainly, "Can you get your butt down here? We need your high degree of your investigation into this camp."
Sep 14, 2026 12:45 pm
Not hearing any major disagreements, Atticus points Octavia off to the southeast, telepahtically communicating to her that she should look for the end of the woods, and a road jutting out of it. Then, once she flies off, he turns on his heel and scoffs.

"Who are you calling old, you moss-back drifter?" Atticus laughs in Krynt's direction as he trudges off to see what he's found. "A camp, you said? What are you suggesting we look for?"

"Do you see that many, small stones forming a circle?" He telled Atticus, pointing at the circle-shaped stones, with the remain of burned stick's ash, "I believed this is a camp, and this is a proof. Is that mean im a detective?"

He duck, just to see the abandoned campfire, "I believed we can found our way into the roads, the only problem is that this camp is years ago. What should we do?"
Sep 14, 2026 8:36 pm
Already missing home and his kids. With a look of confusion says:

Let's head into the young forest, then move into the older part. Maybe we'll encounter some goblins. If we can capture a prisoner, I speak Goblin. If we can find anything that lives around here and communicate with it, maybe it can help us with directions.
Sep 14, 2026 9:33 pm
"But mr Bartholomew," Krynt tried to tell him, "I believed the goblins already leave this area years ago… i didn't know if other intellect creatures even lived in this forest…"

"But your right mr Bartholomew, maybe there's other creatures in this forest? So, what should we do? Im looking for old goblin's footprint then." and so, Krynt uses his perception, looking for the any sign of the old, ancients, and small goblin's footprint leading to…

He crouches down to look for signs of recent habitation; anything recent that sticks out from all the 'old' signs. Regardless of whether he finds something or not, he looks back toward Bartholomew, content to leave the actual tracking to their resident Ranger.

"You speak Goblin?" He snorts in Goblin. His accent is muddled with influences from Common, the way urbanite Goblins from the big cities speak. "It's not a bad suggestion, and the sooner we set off, the better. I don't want to be lost in the woods tonight. But seeing as this camp is quite old, we shouldn't get our hopes up."

Sep 15, 2026 4:11 pm
After a short discussion party decide to move through the young forest where long grass, shrubs and saplings prevent you from finding footprints older then few days
In the older forest you manage to discover some footprints but quite unexpectedly - instead of goblin he has found human sized creature tracks - a lone creature is wearing soft boots

It doesn't take too long for seasoned ranger in cooperation with educated wizard to make following discovery:

You step into a hidden hollow where a low brushwood shelter blends seamlessly into the roots of an ancient oak. Nearby, a neat ring of river stones marks a cold fireplace, complete with a flat cooking rock and a small bundle of wild herbs. Cradled in a mossy root sits a hollowed-out wooden container filled with clear rainwater. The entire camp is pristine and uncluttered, leaving a strong impression that someone lives here in perfect, quiet harmony with the forest.

The most recent Footprints from here lead north-west, quite an opposite direction to where Garran wants to be going and everyone seem to agree ...

It is not for your bad rolls, but because it was supposed to be so when I previously wrote:
- a cold fireplace

It is hard to tell how long anyone been living here. Impossible to tell what they eat if anything. If anything is unusual here - the space within the river stones holds a dusting of fine gray ash, but it is far too little—and you don’t see a single piece of charcoal.

It is obvious to Krynt - these aren't random forest weeds. This specific choice of flora strongly resembles the herb selection favored by Ocelot, the druid who left your company just a few hours ago. The combination of leaves and the way they are grouped feels hauntingly similar to what you saw in his hands recently.
OOC:
For better clarity - the camp is unusually clean: either it is not actually used to camp here or whoever lives here takes very good care to keep this place clean (exactly the opposite of what a goblin would do). Nevertheless fresh water and numerous recent footprints suggest the second is most possible

"Guys, i think this is Ocelot's herbs. But im not sure if this herbs is Ocelot's own?" Krynt plainly warned his party.

After he investigating the herbs, he check the wooden rainwater container. He see if this water is something weird, and how long these rainwater being here. He suspect if the rainwater is yesterday, its not Ocelot, it's someone else. He not expert as much as Ocelot, but he tried his best.

"But you are right about one thing; this is likely the abode of some sort of druid. Though I've never known the druids to be quite so neat. Either way, they're not here anym- Wait a minute."

Atticus peers around the dwelling, especially out toward the northwest, looking for signs of a creature of some sort. An unusually calm squirrel, a conspiciously placed spider, or anything else that might be a druid in the shape of an animal.

Old man
Man cuts Krynn a sharp, critical glance—the kind that silently warns a young man about how he ought to speak to his elders.
Brushing the slight aside, his focus shifts entirely onto Atticus, his weathered eyes locking onto him with absolute, undivided attention.

Slowly, the man rests the sickle against his knee, uncaps a worn waterskin, and takes a long, deliberate drink. He wipes his mouth with the back of his hand, looks right at Atticus, and speaks in a raspy, measured voice:Three-Tree Hill? You sure about that name? Sounds like something out of a fairy tale.
Sep 19, 2026 8:49 pm
Garran regards the druid thoughtfully. Could he be the archdruid Ocelot told them about before taking his leave of the group? He doesn’t seem particularly afraid of them. If he isn’t a powerful druid, then why on earth would he be living here alone in this bleak, mist-shrouded place?
OOC:

Atticus gives the old man a friendly- if slightly skeptical look, then glances down at the map in his hand.

"Mhm, 'fraid so. Three trees, specifically." He taps the map with one gloved finger. "Though, now that you mention it, it does seem a touch far fetched, doesn't it?"

He folds the map again.

"But... be that as it may, we've come all this way and that's where we're trying to get. If you've heard of a place that fits the description but under a different name, though, we'd be grateful for the correction."
Sep 21, 2026 10:57 am
Garran notices that druid were considering his words carefully before speaking - he seen many people do that before lying, but does it mean druid know the location - you can't know that, can't read his mind, your instincts suggest though that is is no archdruid, but rather one more druid who - just like Ocelot were called to take case of the forest

Old man

Old druid looks at the map and studies it carefully leaving an impression that he is trying to memorize what he sees

Never been. The river, though... that is easy. Find the landslide's edge.
he points North Follow east. It borders the water. River will lead you to bridge, jet journey is harder than road. As for the hill... The beasts see what I do not. Birds. Burrowers. May know of lone trees on high ground. But my back is old, and this grass must fall. Grab a blade. Help me cut. Then, I speak to the woods.

He taps the sickle against his leather boot, looking over his shoulder at the remaining thicket of tall grass. His eyes scan your group, narrowing as they linger on the chain mails of your armored companions. He shakes his head, a look of quiet disdain crossing his weathered face."Too much metal. Cold iron hurts the nature spirits. No cutting for you. He reaches back into his heavy canvas pack, pulling out a second, well-worn sickle with a smooth wooden handle. He holds it out toward Krynt and Atticus. "Take the sickle. Do it right and I speak to the woods."

Krynt has realized what's the old man doing - he clears the choking weeds and thick brush specifically around the bases of the young saplings, leaving them breathing room. He is intentionally freeing the trees so they aren't overwhelmed and strangled by the aggressive undergrowth
OOC:
If you agree to help druid I will need you to roll slight of hand check, Krynt could apply advantage to that check thanks to good investigation and if he shares his finding with Atticus both of you could roll with advantage, furthermore - I will allow Atticus to use Intelligence instead of Dexterity if player could neatly narrate the reason to use Int
Ot you could simply decide that conversation is over and we are walking around and to the river just as druid recommended, a longer journey through difficult terrain, but will be no problem to locate the bridge
Sep 21, 2026 11:44 am
Krynt whisper to Atticus and no one else, not even the old man.

He whispered plainly "The druid cut the brushes, specifically around the little sapling.", he pointed at the little sapling. Then he warningly whispered, "do not hurt the little saplings."

He's waiting for the Party's decision.
Sep 21, 2026 11:45 am
"Ha-ha, get to work, boys," Garran laughs as Krynt and Atticus are each handed a sickle. "God forbid I should contaminate the soil with my chainmail."

Garran leans comfortably against a tree and lights a tobacco pipe. Hmm, isn’t the druid’s sickle made of iron? he wonders, looking at the druid.
Sep 21, 2026 12:04 pm
After Krynt hear Garran's laughter, he move to the druid's place, taking the sickle (He don't bothered looking at the old man), and start hacking the brushes and move the brushes away from the little sapling like he was taking away from someone. Carefully not accidentally cut the sapling's branches.

Krynt raise a single eyebrow at Bartholomew, then continuing his work, very carefully.
Sep 22, 2026 1:30 pm
Atticus takes the sickle, turning it over once in his hand before looking back at Garram and Bart.

"Right. Freeing the trees, then." he snorts, giving the sickle a little passive-aggressive wave toward the two metal-clad slackers who don't need to do any of the work.

He then moves toward the thicket and crouches beside one of the saplings, studying the way the weeds have grown around it before making the first cut. Rather than hacking away at the vegetation, he works methodically, following the natural gaps and cutting only what is actually choking the young tree. Every so often, he pauses to inspect the growth before deciding where to cut next, applying the often-undervalued skill known as spatial reasoning to the task.

"Never been much good at brute force." He applies another careful slice. "Fortunately, most problems have a solution that doesn't require it." He mutters as he sets to work. Of course, though he's confident in his efforts, that is no guarantee that they will succeed...

Just as the anxiety peaks, the brush parts, and he steps back into the young grove, his eyes slowly sweeping over the cleared grass and the newly freed saplings before giving a single, firm nod.

He reaches into his leather pouch, pulls out two vials of crimson liquid, and thrusts them toward the two PCs who did the work. His gaze locks onto yours, his voice low and blunt:

You find the road and follow that road bypassing the hill and approaching the bridge than looks quite similar to one on the map
[ +- ] MAP
The winding mountain path narrows, squeezed between jagged grey rocks and a forest of weeping pines that seem to lean inward, blotting out the sky. Ahead, the solid ground simply ends, cut off by a deep, breath-catching gorge.Spanning the chasm is the bridge. It is an old, sagging wooden structure, its timber blackened by rot and slick with a dark, greasy moss. Far below, the river is a distant, roaring whisper, hidden entirely beneath a heavy, churning blanket of grey mist that rises from the depths like smoke. As you stand at the threshold, the wind dies down to an eerie, unnatural absolute silence. The only sound is the sudden, sharp caw of a single raven sitting on the rotting handrail. It watches you with glassy, obsidian eyes.
Even though you haven't stepped onto the wood yet, the proximity to the bridge does something to the air. A sudden, heavy chill settles into your chest. It isn't just cold—it feels like an emotional bruise. An uninvited shadow creeps into your thoughts, a collective cocktail of negative intuition. You feel a sudden, passing prickle of irritation at each other; a fleeting thought that this entire journey is doomed to fail; and a sharp, sudden awareness of just how fragile your bodies are against the rocks below.
Right now, it is just a faint, unsettling whisper in the back of your heads—a warning from the environment itself.
The bridge lies open before you, vanishing into the grey mist over the center of the gorge.
OOC:
The bridge is a narrow, 60-foot span of rotting wood suspended 80 feet above a jagged rocky gorge, where the misty bottom is entirely hidden from view.
What do you do? I guess cross the bridge, but maybe anything you do before crossing the bridge?

Atticus stops a few paces short of the bridge. His eyes move over the handrails, the planks, the supports, then down toward the mist below. The chill in his chest doesn't escape his notice either. He takes a slow drag from his pipe, watching the smoke drift in the unnatural stillness.

"Well. That's encouraging." He glances at the raven. "Anyone else getting the distinct impression there is something... afoot?"

As Garran goes to test the boards the old fashioned way, Atticus scrunches up his nose. The scene of a lonely rotten bridge over the perilous mountain gorge is a little too familiar in a way he can't quite place, and he decides the moment calls for his particular brand of magical detective work.

Stepping away from the bridge and crouching, he draws a precise circle into the dirt with one gloved finger, then dusts the outline with rocksalt. He takes a pair of lodestones from his component pouch, holds them in his open palm, and begins to mutter under his breath. He traces geometric symbols in the air with his free hand, quietly reciting the words of the ritual. The scattered salt gives a faint, almost imperceptible shimmer as he works.

"If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. But if I'm right, we want to know about it."
OOC:
I cast Detect Magic as a ritual!
Sep 23, 2026 2:29 pm
While you are waiting 10 minutes for Atticus to perform ritual Krynt don't see any movement or hear any sound other that that of the raven.

Garran takes that time to observe the bridge more closely. Soon he realizes that the massive support beams anchored deep into the rock are surprisingly solid. This structure has weathered years of brutal mountain storms; the weight of four adventurers is nothing compared to that. The real danger here isn't the bridge collapsing, nor the rotted planks giving way.
You realize this the moment the first of you takes a step onto the timber. That faint, unsettling whisper you felt in the back of your heads? It doesn't just fade—it snaps into sharp focus, swelling into a cold, suffocating pressure inside your skulls. The rotten wood won't break your fall, but whatever is feeding that whisper might just break your mind. That is the real threat ahead

Finally Atticus could confirm what Garran suspected already - whole bridge bear magic - you see a faint aura around all the bridge, but you can't learn the spell’s school of magic, which means this magic effect was not created by a spell, that's something ancient not an effect left by one arcane user

Garran takes a few steps away from the bridge, trying to shake off the agonizing whispers in his head. He drops to his knees and rubs his forehead.

"Something fucking evil is in my head. Atticus, make it stop!"
Sep 24, 2026 1:23 pm
"Shite!" Atticus spits through gritted teeth and clutches his head. He's already moving towards Garran before he finishes speaking, and his eyes remain fixed on the bridge.

"Don't step back onto it. Not alone, at least. The whole bloody thing is enchanted. Ancient magic, too. I can't identify a spell because there isn't one." He stops short of the bridge's threshold, glances toward the others, then back to Garran.

"Get away from the bridge. Whatever it's doing, it clearly gets worse the closer you get." He takes another drag from his pipe, thinking. A cursory glance towards the Raven causes his eyebrow to rise and he is momentarily distracted.

"It doesn't appear to be affecting this little fellow, though..."
Sep 24, 2026 1:32 pm
"Whatever the sorcery it is," Krynt move along with Atticus, and also stop the same threshold where Atticus is standing.

"…we prepare for it." Krynt already draw his longbow. Then he look at Atticus, and plainly say "What should we do? Cross the magical bridge?"
Sep 24, 2026 5:52 pm
Kaelynn hurried along the uneven path, one hand holding her cloak close. She had stayed behind to see an important responsibility through to its end. Now she hurried toward the bridge, hoping she hadn’t arrived too late to join the others. Their voices reached her through the mist before the bridge came into view.

"Get away from the bridge. Whatever it’s doing, it clearly gets worse the closer you get."

She quickened her pace at the warning. When she reached the group, she saw Garran down on his knees, rubbing his forehead, while the others stood near the dark span over the gorge.

"Are we turning back?" she asked. From farther down the path, it had sounded as though they might abandon the crossing. Seeing Garran’s distress, she understood their hesitation. She stopped beside the others, just short of the bridge’s threshold.

There, Kaelynn conferred with Atticus about his ritual findings: the aura across the whole bridge and the fact that he could not identify a spell school.

Kaelynn studied the bridge, searching her memory of old books and weathered accounts for anything that might explain the dread pressing on the group. Her studies had included old wards and warnings, but she could not tell whether any story truly matched this place.

"Could this be some kind of old ward?" she said, weighing the thought. "I’ve read stories of places that filled travelers with dread, though I don’t know whether they described real magic or fear given a name. I can’t say what this bridge is doing or why."
OOC:
Kaelynn searches her memory of ancient tomes for anything resembling this bridge’s magic. I’ve added Arcana and History rolls; please use whichever check fits your ruling, and let me know what, if anything, she recalls.
Her fingers touched the small silver pendant at her throat. She looked from Garran to the bridge. "I want to know where the map in that tome leads, and why the raven left it for us. I have faith that the Goddess watches over me, though I know you may not share it. If this bridge is the way forward, we need to cross. I’ll go first, and you can follow when you’re ready."

Keeping her shield close, Kaelynn moved to the first plank and set one boot upon it, ready to lead the way across.

The voices still echoed in Garran’s head. They drilled into his mind, searching for memories—memories he did not want to remember.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw some of his companions crossing the bridge. He heard the elven woman say something, and then she crossed the bridge as well. Her words felt like a gentle breeze brushing against his forehead. He felt himself able to breathe again and looked around.

Then came the shame. Was he the only one the voices had attacked?

He got to his feet and brushed the moss from his knees. He was still breathing heavily.

"Fuck, I hate this place," he panted. "I suppose we're doing this?" he asked, looking at Atticus.
Sep 25, 2026 6:35 am
"There you are, Kaelynn. And not a moment too soon." Atticus takes a deep breath as the cleric's blessing takes the edge off the intrusive apprehension that has been plagueing him since the bridge came into view. He wonders for a split second why he was ever worried about it in the first place, before that oppressive gloom forces its way back into his mind. Being aware of its intentional nature, however, is part of the solution, and he reassures himself that if it was truly dangerous, the magic wouldn't be attempting to shunt them away.

"Whoever or whatever is the source of this ancient magic, they like as not do not wish us to cross. That tells me that whatever we'll find on the far side is worth protecting."
He grumbles, trudging over to Garran and offering him his hand.
"Aye. This won't be pleasant, but let's get it over with, mate."

@Thorstmixx @Olof you both need to decide either your PCs move now and you will be able to add 1d4 to saving throws thanks to bless spell cast on you or the spell will be gone if your PC are taking time to consider/discuss/see if first, I will do narrative when you see your decision

I'm assuming we're moving right away-- at least Atticus is. Giving Garran a shot to join, but if Olof disagrees, then Atticus moves without him.

@Olof that's a 9+4=13, exactly the DC and if you meet it you beat it, so congrats everyone
Reaching middle of the bridge Krynt becomes absolutely convinced that that creatures are perfectly camouflaged against the posts, waiting to ambush them. Krynt aim his bow, lock their eyes on the structural beams not moving, after a few deep breaths he shakes his head moves forward

Garran's vision narrows until they can only see the damp wood directly beneath their feet. If they look up, their companions look like shifting, featureless shadows. Terrified of being left behind or ignored he still feel warmth of cleric's spell that reminds him - companions do care for him - that allows Garran to cross the bridge

Atticus becomes hyper-aware of the bridge’s decaying state, magnified by a sudden, intense fear of their own mortality, whispering that the wood is about to snap and swallow them whole he suddenly realize how irration the idea is and force himself to cross the bridge that feel like whole journey

can't stop considering the choices - did she choose the right character to bless? Shouldn't have she gone first? Maybe everyone should have gone together helping each other morally? The more she think the less certain she is about making the next step, nevertheless something inside her urge to keep making steps - until the bridge is crossed

All five of you standing on the other side of the bridge feel inspired by making this

After Garran and Atticus cross the road, Krynt lower his longbow. The party is made it here, and that's good. Though he don't get Kaelynn's blessing, he don't need it anyway.

Krynt turn to his party, and ask plainly, "Where should we go next? We clearly need to stay away from that bridge.", he pointed at the whispering bridge.

Few hours later

As you descend past the Red Wyrm's Scorch, the sulfur smoke clears for a brief moment, revealing a bizarre geological formation. A massive outcrop of cooled, black obsidian has hardened into the striking shape of a snarling dragon skull, wedged tightly into a fissure. Deep inside its open, jagged throat, a magnificent, crimson object catches the light. It’s a genuine Red Dragon Scale, pristine and glittering. However, it isn't just sitting there—it is jammed sideways like a wedge, single-handedly pinning down a massive buildup of volcanic gas. The entire basalt skull is visibly vibrating. Thick, black smoke pulses rhythmically from its stone nostrils, and the upper jaw is slowly grinding downward under the immense weight of the shifting hillside. The air around it shimmers with blistering, distorted heat

You can hear the deep, violent grinding of stone. The upper jaw of the skull is slowly sinking under the pressure of the cliffside. If anyone goes inside that mouth, something needs to physically stop those stone jaws from snapping shut like a bear trap.

The smoke billowing from the nostrils isn't random. It chokes out in hot, rhythmic bursts every few seconds, followed by a brief hiss of cool air. There is a predictable pattern to the pressure here, if someone can map out the exact moment of the lull.

The scale is surrounded by razor-sharp obsidian shards, and the floor of the throat is slick with ash. Grabbing it won't be a simple pull; it will require someone incredibly nimble to slip in, twist it free from its stone groove, and dodge back before the heat blisters their skin.
OOC:
Will you ignore and move along? Or do you want to try to acquire Red Dragon Scale? Promise a good money
Sep 25, 2026 5:12 pm
Kaelynn regarded the scale caught in the obsidian skull’s jaws, curiosity bright in her expression, though she kept a wary distance from the pulsing smoke and grinding stone.

"It is a rare thing, and I would like to know more about it. But we should be careful. If someone means to try for it, I can offer a prayer to steady their hand. Perhaps we can also find something sturdy to brace the jaw before anyone goes near it."
OOC:
If someone makes an ability check as part of the attempt, Kaelynn will touch him and cast Guidance, which adds 1d4 to one ability check.
"Though first, I’d like to understand the rhythm of those bursts. Perhaps there’s a safe moment to act."

She settled where the ground seemed steady, drew out her notebook, and began marking the rhythm of each burst: when it came, how long it lasted, and how much time passed before the next.
OOC:
Kaelynn is trying to map the gas-burst pattern from a safe distance. I’ve included Investigation and Perception rolls just in case.

As the others gathered nearby, Kaelynn let her notebook rest and glanced around the group. She seemed to consider her words for a moment before speaking.

"I have been thinking about the bridge. I have not spent much time adventuring with others before this. Most of my work has been quieter, among books and tending to the ill. I was not sure how I would manage, traveling with a whole company."

Her gaze moved from one companion to the next, thoughtful and warm.

"But seeing each of you face that crossing in your own way, and keep going despite what it brought up, has impressed me. I am glad I crossed it with you."

With a small, thoughtful smile, Kaelynn turned back to her notebook and resumed noting the rhythm of the gas bursts.

What in the world is he looking at? The dragon’s jaws appear to be closing. Did they arrive at just the right moment, before the jaws closed completely, or does the jaw open again from time to time? He moves closer to the skull, hoping to understand how it works—but keeps a safe distance.

Behind him, the elf speaks to the group. He turns around and nods at her gratefully.
OOC:
I have a few questions:
1.How large is the dragon scale? Approximately how heavy does it look?
2. Is it possible to enter the dragon’s mouth without getting burned by the hot vapor coming from its nostrils?
3. How quickly does the jaw appear to be closing?
4. Is the smoke coming from the mountain through any openings other than the dragon’s nostrils?
5. How difficult would it be to climb up to the dragon’s mouth?
6. Does the entire group know Kaelynn? How does she fit into the picture?

Yes, for this, the GM decided in the Session 0 thread that we'll assume that she has been part of the group the whole time, just delayed with something else and now joining back up again.

Kaelynn glanced up from her notes toward the crimson scale, turning over the druid's account in her mind.

"If I remember the druid's account correctly, a red dragon once demanded tribute from the settlements here. When the people fled, it turned its fire on the forest. The Archdruid stopped the blaze and banished the dragon from this plane."

Her eyes returned to the scale, bright with curiosity.

"Now we find this here, at Red Wyrm's Scorch. I wonder whether it is connected to that dragon, or if we are seeing a remnant of an older story."

Kaelynn took out her history books and began searching their accounts for references to the red dragon, its scales, or this place, glancing up from the pages to keep track of the pulsing gas.
OOC:
Kaelynn is checking her history books and her recollection for information about the red dragon, its scale, or Red Wyrm's Scorch. I've included a History roll just in case.

Kaelynn's gaze lingered on the glittering scale, then moved to her companions. The sight brought back their last failed contract. They had made it back alive, but with ruined gear, scars, and no reward to show for it.

The memory left a knot of worry beneath her ribs. Kaelynn thought, "The scale may bring good money, but what if someone is hurt reaching for it and we fail again? We came back from the last contract with ruined gear and scars, and nothing to show for them. I don't want any of them to pay that price twice."

She watched another burst of smoke stream from the skull's nostrils, waiting until it thinned before adding a note to her book. Even from here, the scale's color and the mystery of its place in the old account tugged at her attention.

Kaelynn wondered, "Am I letting my curiosity push us toward danger just because I want to know more about the scale?"

Her gaze moved from the scale to the map's remembered path. The raven had led them to the manor, and the map had drawn them into this scarred country. Now they had found a pristine red scale in a place named for the wyrm, tied to a history the druid had shared with them.

Kaelynn thought, "Could this scale be part of the history of this place? Is it connected to the dragon the druid spoke of? Did the raven guide us here for a reason, or are we being lured toward another danger?"

She touched the silver pendant at her throat and bowed her head. In a quiet voice, she prayed, "Goddess, guide our steps. Help us know whether this is a path worth following, or a danger we should leave behind."

Krynt watches as Kaelynn study the red scale or whatever this thing is.
Sep 26, 2026 4:35 am
More danger I'm sure, I just want to get back to my family with some coin.
Sep 26, 2026 8:44 am
OOC:
I will start with easy (for me) part
Opening the book Kaelynn remind herself she has gone through these book before coming here and didn't see any clue, the books she have red never mentioned Red Wyrm's Scorch or the events Ocelot retell based on information he gathered based on magical connection with Archdruid and you could guess Archdruid only told Ocelot the information he needed to know to take care of the woods

Krynt has an impression that the red scale could be a piece of dragon's scale, but it is hard to tell for sure as it is sooty of the thick, black smoke
OOC:
I see two good investigation rolls and in order to not waste them I will turn Kaelynn's into nature check and and assume you both use your intelligence (Ability to recall lore + Reasoning + Logic) to make following conclusion
Kaelynn realize that first impression were wrong the rhythm is not exact - it is not ticking like a clock, while not exactly random it is neither exact, but you could make out a patter between the sound, the smoke size and the time before next burst which could help to predict a longer period

Likewise Garran realize that it was only an impression that mouth is closing - it is not, the scale is clocking it, your only choice to get scale to physically rise the upper jaw at least few inches to allow to pull the scale out
OOC:
And some not yet answered ooc questions
- Smoke is coming only through the dragon’s nostrils, but you could guess they will come from mouth when you take scale out - that's when it becomes dangerous to be in the mouth, not before
- It takes time to get into the mouth but you can do that and guess scale would weight about 50 lb, but I will ask you to roll a Dexterity(acrobatics) check if you want to get out of the mouth quickly

To help us do this challenge quicker and because of good investigation rolls I will suggest you one way to solve this, but feel free to suggest alternatives:
One person rolls Wisdom(Nature) check to predict the best moment to perform the task (pass will give advantage on final Dex check, fail - disadvantge)
Two persons Roll Strength(Athletics) to rise the jaws (if at least one fail you will suffer some damage but be able to repeat) , if both pass the 4th person picks scale and rush outside - roll Dex(Acrobatics) check to get out of the mouth without getting damage (you get scale in any case but get some bludgeoning damage of fail and quite lot of extra fire damage if you fail by 5 or more

Hint: tell me also what these to do to jaws afterwards - do you simply release letting mouth close?
Sep 26, 2026 9:15 am
"What should we do?" Krynt asking the party.
Sep 26, 2026 10:45 am
While waiting for the party's respond, Krynt look at the Red Wyrm's Scorch and see if he can predict how the jaw's moving.
OOC:
rolling wis (nature) as dm's intended…

Rolls

Nature (wis) - (1d20+3)

(8) + 3 = 11

Sep 26, 2026 7:13 pm
"How about we try to raise the jaw a little and then wedge some sturdy branches underneath it? Once the jaw is raised and resting securely on the branches, we can move on to step two. Step two is to wait for a burst of smoke from the nostrils, then pull out the dragon scale and run like hell. "

Garran looks at the group with a crooked, questioning smile.
Sep 26, 2026 8:09 pm
Kaelynn glanced from her notes to the companions gathered around the skull. The jaw was not closing on its own. The scale was holding it open. She tapped the marks she had made in her notebook.

"That’s a good thought, Garran, though I worry even sturdy branches could splinter under that weight. A large, solid stone wedged beneath the jaw or an iron bar would seem safer, if we can find one and set it securely. Whatever we use needs to hold once the scale comes free."

Kaelynn scanned the nearby ground for a large, solid stone that might hold the jaw open.

"The bursts aren’t perfectly regular, but they aren’t random either. The sound, the size of each plume, and the time between them seem to form a pattern. It may help us spot a longer lull."

She looked toward Krynt, who was still watching the rhythm, then turned to the others.

"Krynt is already watching the rhythm. Garran, your strength may be best for lifting the jaw. Bartholomew, would you help him hold it while we secure a brace? Atticus, would you be willing to retrieve the scale? I can touch you and pray over you for the Goddess’s guidance before you go in."
OOC:
Krynt has rolled Wisdom (Nature) +3 = 11 for timing. I'm not sure if he can also make the Dexterity (Acrobatics) check to retrieve the scale (+5), or if each role needs a different person. If the roles must be separate, Garran has the strongest Athletics (+5) to lift the jaw. Bartholomew could assist (+0 Strength, no Athletics proficiency listed), and Atticus could retrieve the scale (+2 Acrobatics). Kaelynn can touch the person making the Acrobatics check and cast Guidance, adding 1d4 to one ability check.
