A fine, persistent drizzle dampens your clothes and slicks the muddy ground as you leave Wytchway behind. The sky above is a heavy, leaden gray, and the damp cold nips at your skin. Yet, despite the dreary weather, morale remains incredibly high. Your hearts are light with anticipation, and the air is thick with great expectations for the journey ahead. Your footsteps and muffled chatter echo through a harsh, unforgiving landscape carved with rugged hills and deep, mist-shrouded chasms.
After hours of navigating this steep, mountainous terrain, you finally reach the landmark known as the Hand and Horn. According to your directions, this is where you must turn south.
[ +- ] Map with your movement
However, as you look in that direction, you face your first real challenge. The beaten road continues stubbornly forward, but to the south, there is no visible path at all.

Peering closer through the gray mist at the jagged cliffs, the truth becomes clear. The environment here is unstable, and it appears that a massive landslide in recent decades has completely reshaped the landscape. Tons of fallen rock, earth, and overgrown debris have buried the old trail entirely, leaving you stranded at a dead end with nothing but steep gorges and wild terrain ahead.
OOC:
Dear players I would like you to do two things with your first post in this game thread:
1. Are you cracking jokes to keep morale up, grumbling about the wet boots, or focused and serious on the path ahead? Describe your character's general demeanor right now.
2. Instead of picking a skill, tell me what you actually do. Are you scrambling up the side of the unstable slope to scout from above? Are you probing the base of the rubble with a crowbar or staff to listen for hollow echoes beneath? Are you searching for displaced tree roots that might show where the path used to lead, or trying something completely outside the box?
Add a skill roll you think best represent what could go wrong with your action and please do roll twice - as mentioned in Session 0 I may apply advantage or disadvantage to the roll

Impatient and curious enough to walk at the head of the party, Atticus Harrow is a broad-shouldered tiefling, dressed in a long, dark coat with the collar turned up against the rain. His muted, tan skin is partly obscured by the coat and the neatly kept beard framing his face. Two uneven black horns curl back from his brow, disappearing into thick, dark, wavy hair streaked with silver at the temples. His dark eyes move constantly over the surrounding terrain, and a pipe smoulders between his teeth, smoke mixing with the mist. His worn but well-kept coat billows open in the wind, and rain splashes across the waistcoat underneath. He doesn't seem particularly bothered by the weather, and if anything, the sudden dead end has caught his attention.

He steps closer to the rubble and crouches at its edge. The map comes out of his coat, carefully shielded from the rain, and he compares the terrain around them with what little the old markings reveal.
"Right. That's a touch inconvenient."

Tucking the map away, he steps back from the blocked road and begins following the edge of the rubble, looking for signs of traffic.

"If the old road has been buried for a while, then anyone who has travelled this way since will have had to find another route." He thinks aloud. He looks for flattened grass, disturbed earth, broken branches, footprints, or anything else suggesting that people or animals regularly pass around the obstruction.

Ocelot is a somewhat diminutive Elf with a lithe musculature that is built more for speed than stature. His pale blond hair is unkempt and he shakes it out of his face to get a better view of the debris that has covered the former path. He hooks his thumbs in a couple of loops attached near the waist to his leather armor. The loops are really used to hold the small bags tied to them, but it is a convenient habit of posture. The rain does not bother him. he prefers to be outdoors. "Go figure."

He moves near Atticus and wipes the rain from his left brow. "Perhaps an extra set of eyes can help. I am usually pretty good at tracking, myself. Let's see if anyone has been this way before us."

A few steps behind the tiefling and the elf walked Garran Veyr, a broad-shouldered human in his thirties. He was dressed in a long leather coat that partially concealed his chainmail. The chainmail rattled softly as he walked. Garran’s hair was ash-blond and reached down to his shoulders. His gaze was watchful, his expression grim. The rain and damp were not much of a bother to him. He had learned to deal with such things after all his years as a soldier. But something about the landscape made him uneasy. He couldn’t shake the feeling that something terrible was waiting for them around the next bend, hidden in the mist.

"Damn these fucking roads," Garran muttered quietly as he took the opportunity to relieve himself on a pile of fallen stones. He trusted that Atticus and Ocelot would find a way.

Krynt walk front leftside of the party, yet Atticus is ahead of him, stubborn and curiosity always infront the roads, that's how every story ends, or succeed, no one knows the tales until they see the future…

He wear a gambeson, leather gauntled, kneepad, all studded everywhere. Daggers and shortsword on his left belt while a quiver full of arrows on his right belt. Yet only everyone notice only is dark brown cloak with burned edge, a sign of the scar of his (and the party's) failures, with silver lines, and a silver insignia that just a decorations. He already carry his longbow on his left because he know there will be ambush, and he know he will ready if this goes sideway, the problem is he's too stubborn for insist there's ambush (but he didn't tell the party yet) What an Irony…
He see retired soldier kicking a rock, a Tiefling reading a map, an elf helping the tiefling, and the other, robe-wearing orc praying for who he didn't know, Krynt grateful that he has a party like them, even though the party look like a toddlers to someone else seeing this party. speaking of party, Krynt's memory is foggy, he didn't know why, he didn't know how he meet the party, who they are, and how our last Adventures was a Disaster... Its foggy, and yet, he know each other… why?
He forget about it (Again, what a irony), and sneakly walk past Atticus who doesn't pay attention on the road, not breaking the stealth, then he look at the road for a sign of lifes, or dangers, lurking arround the roads…

Atticus glances over at the elf, then back towards the slope. "Yeah, go ahead--" he starts, waving Ocelot ahead. Then he mutters under his breath; "Because I don't see a godsdamned thing."

He takes another slow look along the edge of the landslide, paying particular attention to the places where the terrain would offer the easiest route around it. But alas, he wasn't wrong in his own estimation; he truly could not see 'a godsdamned thing'.

"If people have been using this road since the landslide, they won't have gone straight over it. They'll have found the path of least resistance, no?" He takes a drag from his pipe and exhales into the mist. "Or maybe we're the first to come by here in a long time..."

The orc followed the others; his sandalled footsteps slow but steady, his hands folded together beneath his robes, his head bowed. Straps around his robes supported the heavy quarterstaff which rested upon his back. His lips moved but no words were uttered as he silently spoke the prayers taught to him in The House of The Crying God; their recitation filling him with strength and hope. Eventually he looked up, hearing Atticus muttering about inconvenience.

Fang watched silently as the diminutive elf moved to stand beside Atticus but said nothing, his eyes turning first to the broad-shouldered human relieving himself against nearby stones, and then to the cloaked man he knew as Krynt, before looking back at the way forward.

"A journey is more than just footsteps," he said with a smile as Atticus exhaled his pipe smoke. "It is a test of the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of an individual. We will discover a way to move forward and, in doing so, we will discover more about ourselves."

Atticus snorts at those words, cocking his head in Fang's direction.
"Next you'll tell me it's about the journey and not the destination. That the real treasure was the friends we made along the way." He grins.
"I'm sure we'll discover plenty about ourselves, but right now I'd settle for discovering a path through this heap of shit."

He turns back towards the slope, continuing his search along the edge of the rubble. Then, he calls to Fang over his shoulder; "You priestly types are right about many things; but there'll be no preaching your way out of this one, Fang. C'mon, help us look for a way through, or around."
Sep 11, 2026 1:53 pm
Fang snorted in a laugh at Atticus' words. "You jest, Mr Harrow, but there is some truth in that cliched saying." He proceded to nod at what Atticus said next. "One of my fellow Brothers used to say that those who look outwards but cannot see a way to go on should turn their eyes upwards for inspiration. Perhaps such a belief should be applied here."
OOC:
Fang will now try to scramble up the unstable slope to scout from above. I'll assume no roll is needed unless the GM says otherwise.

"Yeah, That makes sense on both counts. I will look around a bit. I will let all of you know if I see anything. Quite an odd collections of folks we make here. For me, a journey is simply the means of moving from one place to another when there is a task at hand. It is the task that takes precedence."

He stands straight and slowly turns in a circle. "To state the obvious, our needed direction has become impassable. We are going to have to fins a way to transverse this gorge or a way around at least part of it. Around is probably the best option but for the delay."

Krynt doesn't care about the arguement between a priestly orc and a tiefling. He hid under the forest's shadow, and look on the endless road ahead…

Atticus confidently wipe some dirt on his face to 'blend in with the elements,' sniff the air, and point. 'There!' Then he look to the left. 'No, wait, there!' In seconds, you've accidentally discovered an absolute web of conflicting pathways through the solid rock. You turn to the party with a huge, reassuring smile: 'Good news, team! We have plenty of choices. Bad news... I think we might have to climb backwards.'"

Ocelot points out after some considering that it is not given animal tracks lead to the Scorch of the Red Wyrm, it may or it may as well not

Krynt
With that amazing roll, you successfully hide behind a shrub that is entirely too small for you, yet somehow you pull it off. Pressing your face into the dirt, your senses heighten to a superhuman level. You don't find a path, but you do notice a family of beetles three layers deep in the rubble having an intense domestic dispute.

Fang simply sighs, steps past the debating party, and walks straight into the landslide. You quickly realize the terrain isn't actually dangerous. As long as you don't run, the rocks don't shift. Encouraged, you push deeper and deeper into the gray mist, climbing over mounds of earth and dodging overgrown debris. You go as far as you can until you look back—and realize the party has completely vanished into the fog. You turn back around to look ahead, but the jagged cliffs look identical in every direction. You are standing in a perfectly safe, completely silent pocket of mist... with absolutely no idea which way to go.

Garran ... don't want to admit until it becomes obvious. Party have no idea which way are Threetree Hill.
OOC:
Let me clarify the problem your PCs have faced
There is no endless road ahead… there is no road at all. All you have is a general direction. The map you have is and abstraction - it is not a precise map and you don't have compass You need to find the Threetree hill. You guess it is South-East bet could as well be South-East-East or maybe just south. You could move south-east only to realize after a day ot travel that you are still going same way and see no hill... or maybe you saw the hill but trees were Storm-blown away or just cut off

I would like to insist everyone try to contribute to your party success here. I don't like skill challenges, will not run that per dnd 4.0, but in a similar way I would love to narrate how 2 or 3 PCs actions supplement each other. Please take your time - day or two - and come back with one action/activity your PC would do to help party find the way. And roll 2D20 if you can't and won't come up with a skill/ability check. Thanks .

Garran Veyr straightened his clothes after relieving himself. He looked up toward the landslide, trying to catch sight of where Fang had gone.

"Mr. Fang, do you see anything up there?" he called out. Afterwards, he slowly began climbing up the landslide, hoping to get past it. Perhaps the trail continued a little further down to the southeast.

He had glanced at Atticus’s map with a mixture of curiosity and skepticism. He liked maps, and the thought of a hidden treasure tickled his imagination. But he dared not believe in such dreams. The world he lived in rarely had happy endings — at least not for someone like him. He was one of the few poor bastards who meant nothing. Happy endings were reserved for the rich and the important. His only worth was that he could swing a sword and puncture the lungs of those unfortunate enough to be his master’s enemies. Scenes from the battlefields flashed through his mind.

He panted heavily and stopped for a moment to catch his breath. He hoped the others would assume it was simply the exertion that had left him panting. Was there even a treasure? Who was the raven? One of the gods? Hardly. Why would they care about them? Was this really yet another low point in their adventures?

Atticus studies the map for a moment longer, then looks up at the surrounding hills.
"If we don't find this road, or what's left of it, soon we're going to waste an awful lot of time here arguing about which way to go from here."
MrSaxon says:
"One of my fellow Brothers used to say that those who look outwards but cannot see a way to go on should turn their eyes upwards for inspiration. Perhaps such a belief should be applied here."
The tiefling peers over his shoulder at his orcish companion, raising an inquisitive brow. "That's not a bad idea, actually." He murmurs in a monotone that makes clear his irritation at the fact that he didn't think of it first.
Then, turning back, he gives a short whistle, and his white owl familiar darts from a nearby tree. Atticus closes his eyes, letting his senses meld with hers as her vision opens up above the party. From the ground, he's unable to see much. From above, he can search for anything that might serve as a landmark: a distinctive hill, a cluster of trees, a break in the ridgeline, or anything else that might match the vague description of Threetree Hill or serve as a likely destination for folks passing this way.

He slowly turns in place as the owl circles higher, using her vantage point to get a sense of the surrounding terrain before they commit themselves to a direction.

"Let's see what Octavia thinks."

After climbing down, He plainly ask Garran who taking a breath, "What should we do now?".

While waiting Him for an answer, He look at the mist for any signs of something suspicious about the foggy cloud, either an unnoticed path that he and Garran couldn't founded, or worse…

I am going to add 2 to @Thorstmixx rolls because I feel he is doing Intelligence rather than Wisdom check and his Int modifier is better by 2.
I just need @MacConnell and @MrSaxon to post their PC actions and rolls before I can narrate results and improved environment description

With this I'm rather trying to fix challenge details to be less confusing, but I will try to apply your rolled ability checks to the narrative
Atticus sits down close his ayes and let owl fly around him, though not more than 100 feet up/away - because he knows - that's the limit of his telepathic ability

While wizard is focused on the big picture Krynt looks for what could he discover at his footprints - after some time he manage to indeed discover something suspicions that turns out to be remains of goblin camp abandoned years ago. He finds enough proof that at least six goblins were camping here more than a day in row.

Meanwhile Garran decide it is faster to walk around to see the word than to look at it from owl's ayes and is rewarded - while owl ayes can only distinguish several miles long border of landslide and forest Garran approaching that border could see something strange - the first few miles of the forest is young - trees are 10-15 feet high, but further there is another border - where the young forest suddenly turns into a normal forest with high trees

When you all get back and share your findings Ocelot suddenly steps forward and announce
I have talked to arhc druid last night, I will leave you to take care of this environment that was unnaturally altered decades ago
And he share the here story - click here to read it

As you take a look at the map with that new knowledge you realize in the map the road from this location to Threetree hill has a big gap
https://i.imgur.com/8Q5Qaqm.png
Who knows - maybe it isn't sloppiness of the the author, but just the opposite

Somewhere there in the forest road will continue but you have no idea where.
OOC:
This is moment where I have no idea how would you be able to find next location other than randomly searching the forest and just waste half a day or more, but I would love anyone to surprise me with a brilliant idea
Sep 14, 2026 11:47 am
Atticus stares at the map for a moment, comparing it with what his familiar and Garran saw, tracing a finger along the vague line where the road should continue. Then, he looks southeast towards the forest and clears his throat to address the others.

"If this whole section was cleared by the landslide, then the road from here on out will be long gone. But the border between this younger wood and the elder might be where we need to look for where it continues. I suggest we head down there to where the young meets the old and trace the border to see if we find it. Meanwhile, I'll send Octavia farther southeast to look for where the forest ends. If she spots the road, she can come back and give us at least a vague direction. Anyone have any better ideas?"

The white barn owl named Octavia circles overhead, awaiting her next instructions.
Sep 14, 2026 11:47 am
After Krynt look at his own footprint, he realize his suspicious instinct is correct, there's an abandoned camp he presumably is goblin taking camping here, years ago. (Clues he found is mismatch rock in circle shape with dark remain of burned stick's ashes inside the circle, a 4 small holes almost forming a small rectangle)

After moved a little bit to the remain of the camp, Krynt shouted to informed his party, plainly, "Guys, i found something interesting here, can you all come here for a second?"
