Background Images

In the advanced options on my Game page there's a section to add a background image, but I just can't get it to work.

I've uploaded to imgur and grabbed the link as I would to include an image in a post, but it doesn't seem to show up. What am I doing wrong?

Hmm, I checked with a Google Drive png image, and the setting works for me. Have you tried any other images to see if the problem is with the picture? Too big perhaps?

You can also try adding it with extended settings via JSON, see here.

Be aware that background images might not show up on mobile, even in desktop mode (at least they don't seem to for me), and that Imgur images don't show up in a number of regions (like UK).

To FlyingSucculent's point, if one's screen isn't wide enough, the background is hidden behind the content on the page. I'm uncertain of the exact width but 1000 pixels is close (at least on desktop).

I can see background images in games I'm playing in. I grabbed one of those and used it as a scale template to generate the jpg, so pretty confident it's not a scale issue. Standard desktop would be 1920x1080 pixels, and that seems to work elsewhere. I think the issue's the way I'm entering the link rather than the image itself.

I'll try the JSON option. Thank you!

So, when I hit save after entering the image link into the editor there's an error message in a red box that flashes up too fast for me to read, then when I open edit again the image link hasn't been saved. I reckon this error might be the root of my problem. I've tried other browsers to the same effect. Could this be something wrong with the game?

I'm getting the same behaviour with other games I'm GMing. In NZ so no issues with imgur here, and I use it for inline images in posts with no issue...

Can you share the link to the image you're testing? Exactly like you're inputting it?

Sure: https://i.imgur.com/g8wdNVB.jpeg

Hmm, I checked it on my test game, and it worked there - behold.

Can the image link not saving have something to do with your other advanced settings? Do you have dice rules or the like, or any other JSON? The red error message might be it, although it usually shows while editing, not saving.

Maybe try temporarily removing other JSON and see if the image saves then?

Yup, that works alright. Well, that only makes things seem harder. I tried it on all my games, and it wouldn't work.

The only thing I have enabled is the DnD 5e custom character sheet. That and I guess all of my games are currently closed for applications, which... I mean, it seems unlikely but you never know with niche errors. I thought it might be Firefox, but Chrome gave me the same result.

I guess I'll try disabling all preset character sheets? And if not maybe it's my account? Could test that by giving a player temporary GM permissions...

EDIT: Actually the red error banner is popping up every time I refresh the game page, but never for long enough for me to read it. And it's happening on all the games I GM.

Scratch that, FIXED IT!

So, this is a testament to my total ignorance of code: There's an open text field at the bottom of the advanced settings. For some reason all of mine read "null" by default. Erasing that seems to have allowed the code to properly populate from the settings above it.

So you were completely right in that there was a bit of code blocking me. I just had no idea it was code. I bet that's also what the error message is about.

Yay, glad you found the solution! Weird behavior of the error message, but I suppose all's well that ends well! :D
