1Mar99 Arctic Training/Refresher - Day 1: Beyond the COP

Aug 28, 2026 10:22 am
The LRRP section for Arctic Training gets to the gate leaving COP Charlie a few minutes before 0600. The sky is still a deep, starless black, the kind that feels heavy rather than empty. Only the wind‑whipped snow catches what little light exists… a stray beam or two from the guard in the shelter of the guard shack… and intermittent, eerie blue flashes from the radio tower.

Thrace hands a coil of rope to McBride. He takes it with a nod; no words needed. Between her and the next person is nearly ten meters of swirling white, the kind of distance that can swallow a soldier whole in a storm like this.

McBride signals Black and Simmons.

"You’ve both got the experience," he says, voice steady over the wind. "And I trust either of you to handle the number‑two spot."He looks at Black and continues, "I’d like for you to take number two. I’ll put Dawid (NPC), the Doctor and Wolfe (NPC) behind you."

Black nods once, already unclipping a carabiner from his ruck strap.

McBride turns to Simmons. "I’d like you to take the midpoint. With Ms. Kharchenko, McCain and our Canadien, MacDonald behind you."

Simmons gives a short, knowing nod. He’s already reading the rope, the spacing, the wind direction, instincts kicking in without fanfare.

"Everyone will be at 5 meter intervals starting with Black. And I’ll bring up the rear. Any questions?"

Any questions get answered quickly. If no one speaks. The wind fills the silence.

As McBride moves down the line, he places each person right where he said, checking clips, knots, and spacing. He stops briefly with each soldier.

In a low, firm voice he tells each one, "Movement within these walls are not really a problem. Shelter’s only a few meters in any direction. But once we pass out that gate, a lost person in a storm like this is as good as dead. So clip in and make sure you stay clipped in until LT Thrace or myself say otherwise."

The wind is out of the northwest, hard enough that everyone has to lean into it as they pass through the gate. It claws at parkas, rattles ruck straps, and sends loose snow skittering across the ground like dry sand. The temperature is well below zero, but the wind makes it feel colder still; a sharp, biting cold that finds seams and gaps in clothing no matter how well layered.

Beyond the gate, the world narrows to a tunnel of swirling white. The road is technically gravel. But right now, the surface is mostly wind-scoured packed snow/ice covering the rutted road, ruts currently barely noticeable under the snowpack.

The Yaktrax and bunny boots prove their worth immediately, each step lands with a confidence the inexperienced replacements didn’t expect. Confidence quickly builds despite the incredible cold and stinging weather.

Thrace sets the pace, steady and deliberate. McBride walks at the rear, eyes scanning the formation, making sure spacing stays tight and nobody drifts. The replacements follow, heads down, shoulders hunched against the wind. Their breath streams out in long white plumes that are instantly torn away by the storm. They move well. Better than McBride expected.

Within moments, COP Charlie disappears behind them.
Not gradually — completely.
No stray light from any building…
No blue flashes…
No outline of HESCO barrier walls…
The blizzard swallows the outpost whole.

From the guard post, it only took a minute… maybe less… Anyone looking for signs of the LRRP’s departure would find nothing. Ten people. Three sleds.

No footprints.
No drag marks.
No churned snow.
No trail to follow.

Snowpack. And the wind erases everything within seconds.

Only their absence betrays their passing.

Rooster has a speciality in Load Carrying, how does this translate to him rolling dice?
"Join the Marines they said. Go out to exotic places. Meet new people. Have an adventure."

Rust was griping under his breath. The wind mostly covered him, but even still, at a deep baritone under the strain of dragging the sled, the rumble of his voice carried.

"Fuck this cold." He muttured reaching under his coat to grab his canteen. He unstoppered it, chugged five mouthfuls, restoppered it and tucked it away. It had only been a few seconds of exposure. But it was enough to set his teeth chattering. "Cannot get used to it. Been three months of it and it is colder every damn day." He stepped double time stomping into the gravel, trying to warm himself up.

"S'pose there's an advantage to bein'radioactive. Gonna be the last person to freeze."

Rust had concluded, frigid cold was worse than scorching heat.

Jason led on at number two, keeping a steady pace, but not so grueling as to outmatch anyone else in the chain. It was solely to keep all things in rhythm, and make sure he was doing his part, at the least. He figured he wasn't going to be a problem with pace, and struggle would be with some of the others, though, he didn't hold anything against the native civvies who may have put up with a lot for what it was worth in their time living in the region.

We prepared for the Big One, all of us, but it was the one that was always that we thought was going to never going to come...especially because of these nuclear-assisted-winters, Jason mused.

Jason glanced back, checking on his fellow Replacements to get a fell for how they might be doing. It might be a rookie move, but he figured damn the visibility situation, he wasn't going to go just by feel in the moment. He could wait until they were further along to rely on that. He wanted the team to feel his presence instead of being just vaporous and unhelpful when they might need it.

Justin pulled his jacket closed, making sure his hat and gloves were properly in place against the wind. For everything he had been through, the cold reminded him of home. In some ways, it was the closest he had been to home in a long time, and perhaps the closest he would ever be again.

So when Rooster started grumbling about the cold, Justin had to reply.

"This isn’t cold. You should see some Canadian winters. We used to have the water pipes freeze and somebody would have to go outside and thaw the pipe before it burst. Otherwise, no water until you got the damn thing fixed."

There was the faintest hint of a smile on his face. "Now that was cold."

"Yeah. Fuck that. I'z jacket weather one hundred degrees warmer'n this." Rust offered MacDonald a cigarette as he used the proximity as a windbreak and lit one for himself. "We got real weather n'Florida too. Hurricanes." Rust figured that was self explanatory, everyone, excluding Floridians it seemed, knew how bad hurricanes were. "Good surf."

"This is cold." Anastasia says with a nod from behind her scarf. "Cold is better than hot. I can always put on another sweater, I can only continue taking things off so long."

She looks at Rooster and Justin, "Hurricanes sound exciting, but terrifying. Living in a place that is mostly swamp and monsters does not sound like fun."

Cristea says nothing. He pulls his jacket tighter as the wind claws at every gap in the unfamiliar layers and concentrates on the more immediate problem of keeping pace with the figure ahead of him without falling over. Five metres, that's all. Follow the rope, put one foot in front of the other.

He had survived Russians and several months sleeping wherever he could find shelter. It would be profoundly embarrassing to be defeated by walking.

Head down against the wind, the doctor trudges on in resentful silence.

"We should keep moving."

Being closest to the sled Rooster shoulders the Ahkio. Like some fucked up version of Santa Claus, began to push to the front attempting to overtake whichever sled was the lead and keep it in his periphery.

Rust's thoughts drifted to his first job, unpacking flowers in a warehouse. In particular, bundles of incense bush which had aroused his suspicion for being stored in a freezer.

The cold however stripped him of the memory. It was tearing through the skin, chilling him to the bone. Hard to concentrate on anything with that pain. Iron will, all that mattered now.

What Rooster was saying to himself in this kind of cold:
"Move, or die."

The cold wasn't going to be what killed him, he put that in the front of his mind. He resolved to die beating Russia at General Winter. He was cold and tired. So what...

He would hold that til later and take it out on some unfortunate Soviet.

LT Thrace’s pace seemed painfully slow at first to those without Arctic combat experience. Ten meters felt like one. The rope tugged gently with each step, the line moving like a single organism rather than a collection of individuals. But an hour later, opinions had changed. Most were grateful for the pace she set — steady, deliberate, energy‑conserving. The kind of pace that kept people alive.

The wind was the worst for the first 150 meters between the wall and the treeline. It came in hard from the northwest, slamming into the rope line and forcing everyone to lean into it. The wind continued to whip snow around them and drove the snow like sand across desert dunes in a storm. To exposed skin, it felt the same. Snow scoured their parkas like sandpaper. Even with goggles down, exposed skin prickled and burned.

Once they reached the trees, the world changed. The treeline blocked most of the wind, and the snow underfoot was less crusted, less deep. The Yaktrax bit into the softer surface, and the bunny boots distributed weight well enough that slipping became less of a concern. But the path was narrow — barely a meter wide — and the going remained slow.

Black, in the #2 slot, mirrored Thrace’s movements perfectly. When she shifted left to avoid a drift, he shifted left. When she slowed to test footing, he slowed. The rope transmitted every micro‑adjustment down the line. Simmons, at the midpoint, felt each change and quietly corrected spacing behind him, keeping the replacements from bunching up or drifting.

After about half an hour, they reached the edge of the woods. The wind picked up again, but the treeline continued along their right side, tempering the worst of it. Snow whipped across the open ground in long, low sheets — dunes in motion, driven by the storm.

Drifts built up against the trees, but Thrace kept them out of the worst parts. She read the terrain instinctively, with a kind of practiced intuition that came from years of Arctic movement. The rope line followed her like a shadow.

After another twenty minutes, everyone began to notice a faint, undulating glow ahead. Red, mostly. The kind of diffuse light that could be mistaken for dawn except it was in the north, not the east. Flickers and flashes of blue‑green danced along a line of trees up ahead, now becoming visible through the blowing snow. The glow cast an eerie, shifting illumination across the drifts, making the snow look alive.

The new light made it easier for Thrace. She adjusted her route, guiding the group around deeper snow and hidden dips. It also made it easier for the rest of the rope line — silhouettes became faintly visible, spacing easier to maintain.

Thrace angled toward a gap between two lines of trees. It should have made the going easier, but the narrowing acted like a wind tunnel. The storm funneled through the gap, turning the already heavy wind into a near‑gale. The rope snapped taut, and everyone leaned hard into their ski poles, boots and Yaktrax clawing for purchase.

The funnel was difficult but short.

Just past the trees, Thrace called a halt. The rope line stopped in unison, tension easing but not slackening. She scanned the terrain, reading the snow, the wind, the faint glow ahead.

Through the blinding snow, she spotted something — a shape, a structure. She angled toward it, and the rope line followed.

It didn’t take long before the group reached a cabin built from logs, sitting at the edge of a large open field. Snow had piled against its windward side, and the roof was half‑buried, but the structure was solid — a rare piece of shelter in the storm.

Thrace raised her voice.

"Welfare checks. Check each other and yourselves. Report any problems — numbness, tingling, pain. Also check your gear, then hydrate. Even if you aren’t thirsty."

The rope line loosened as soldiers turned to each other, checking faces, hands, ears, and gear. Hydration tubes came out. Water bottles cracked open. The storm howled around them, but for the first time since leaving the COP, the LRRP had a moment to breathe.

I need the following skills checks made:

Cristea continues in much the same fashion. Slowly, silently, mostly staring at his own boots of the backs of the one ahead. Yet as the minutes accumulate he is mildly surprised to discover that he is keeping pace. The strange attachments on his boots grip when he expects to slip, and the multiple layers keep out most of the cold. Even the goggles, irritating as they are, allow him to see enough of the world immediately in front of him to remain upright. Nevertheless, the progress does not seem particularly slow to him and he is relieved that nobody has yet asked him to go any faster. The glow ahead eventually draws his attention. Peering through the blowing snow at the shifting lights, trying to make sense of it. Fire perhaps? He watches with curiosity as they approach, but says nothing.

When the halt is finally called the tension in his shoulders becomes more evident and the complaints his body has been storing up begin to reveal themselves. Stiffness across his back, aching joints, the unfamiliar weight of rifle and pack. He had been composing a rather comprehensive indictment of the entire exercise for most of the journey but - slightly irritatingly - his examination reveals nothing actually wrong with him. Flexing his fingers he checks the exposed skin and sensation, then turns his attention to Anastasia with considerably greater confidence than he has displayed at any point during the march. In perfunctory Russian he barks: 'Fingers.' Then inspects her face and ears. 'Numbness? Tingling?' And almost before she speaks he adds, 'And do not tell me you are "fine", tell me what you can feel.' Satisfied, he gives a small nod. 'You will do.' He looks around at the others. 'If anyone has found anything concerning, let me see it now before it becomes more than just a hindrance.'

Only then does he take the instructed drink of water and look back across the strange illuminated snow. His back hurts, his feet hurt, he is cold and tired and still not entirely certain why he agreed to any of this. But, somewhat to his surprise, he feels very much alive.

Jason gave hinself a careful one-over amidst the blazing winter and once relatively satisfied he moved onto his buddy, Simmons. He gave him a hearty pat on the shoulder, and held out a fist to bump. He checked over Simmons to make sure his battle-buddy was in good order this far into their sojourn.

"How are you liking our tour of beautiful România so far?" Black asked Simmons playfully.

At the Recruiting Station, they actually did make seeing the world a point of note as a reason why joining the military was such a good idea. It was a little warped from the way a traditional tour guide might deliver such a message.

Hell of a way to see the world. I see people's worlds shatter.

He checked over Simmons to make sure his battle-buddy was in good order this far into their sojourn. "How are you liking our tour of beautiful România so far?" Black asked Simmons playfully.
Simmons is more than happy to have even a little protection from the wind. He shifts into the lee of the cabin, lowers his face covering just enough to drink, and carefully takes several measured swallows from his water bottle. He keeps the bottle close to his mouth and wipes the rim before resealing it, making sure he does not spill water onto his face, gloves, or clothing where it could freeze.

When Black comes up, gives him the shoulder pat, and offers the fist bump, Simmons grins and bumps his fist against Jason’s.

"Hell, Jason, this is about normal for out here anymore. Been like this most of the last year since the nukes."

He gives Black a quick once-over in return, checking his face, ears, gloves, straps, and outer layers for anything out of place before giving him a firm pat on the shoulder.

"You look good. Nothing obvious. Keep it that way."

Seeing Dr. Cristea already working through a buddy check on Anastasia and some of the others, Simmons turns his attention down his own portion of the line. He checks MacDonald, then Rooster, and finally SFC Wolfe, looking for exposed skin, signs of numbness or cold injury, loose straps, shifted equipment, or anything else the wind and movement may have worked loose.

Once satisfied with them, Simmons checks himself again. He works over his ruck straps, weapon sling, gloves, snowshoe bindings, and especially the Yaktrax to make sure they are still properly seated. He gives the rope and his attachment point a careful inspection, checks the spacing and knots, then moves to the Ahkio sled nearest him. He looks over the lashings, tow rope, load balance, and anything that might have shifted during the movement, giving the straps a firm tug before standing back up.

"Midpoint's good. People and gear look solid from here."

Tucking in against the building Anastasia does her checks before giving her weapons a quick once over to ensure they're all functioning as expected as well.

She shivers adjusting her scarf and goggles as she looks about at the others. "Is shit weather no?" Anastasia says with a grin wiggling her fingers and toes to ensure they're still working just fine.
