"Didn't expect to learn another advantage of cremation over burial after the topic came up."
Irineu remarks, gazing indifferently at the desecrated graves. The dead don't seem to be offended, so it can't be that much of an issue. Instead his attention is drawn to the things that had been discarded around.
"Unmarked graves for the hanged wouldn't have anything worth the trouble of robbing, and they don't even care about the few trinkets found? Intead littering their own stuff."

Irineu points his staff toward the nearest twig fetish. A small section of its shadow stretches before peeling away from the ground, coalescing into a floating spectral hand that reaches towards the nearest twig fetish to carry back for inspection.

Casting Mage Hand cantrip on the weird twigs to check them up closer

’This vagabond interests me not, Sir Taniwah. Whatever trinkets the wretch may find will end up in the ground, where we are all headed. I WILL however rebury the flesh, if time permits? But I assume our guides would want to press on." Brother Martin says arming himself in case this fool proved dangerous.

SHaelyn keeps a spell on her lips, just in case, but largely ignores the man.
Aug 12, 2026 3:50 am
Taniwha notices that the man has a wild, desperate look in his eyes. You know that look all too well, the look of someone who has killed for survival and will kill again. Amalthea does not register any divine or hellish. The man is mortal, but that makes his feral look seem all the more terrifying.

Irineu sends the tendril of shadow over to the fetish. When the shadow falls over the twigs, they leap up and jerk to life! The bundle of twigs raises what would be a head on a tiny body, then rears up and bites the shadow! It growls at the spell as the other twig blights awake. "Who is out there?" the old, wizened figure calls. "I warn you, I have old gods by my side."

"A mad druid!" the hunters repeat in hissing whispers. "Old one!" Tyminski calls. "Be off before you start trouble! You won't like what we do to you!" The men go for their weapons, but no one is ready to make the first move. Tyminski looks to you to judge your reaction.
OOC:
If the party wishes to enter combat, go ahead and roll initiative and the NPCs will be behind you. This encounter is also open to other solutions.

Shaelyn steps forward. "Old one! These men can kill you. Do not sacrifice yourself to them! Be on your way!"
Aug 12, 2026 11:52 am
Taniwha stabs his spear into the ground, stepping forward between the group and the old Druid. His hands are open and showing his open palms in a gesture meaning no harm. "Excuse those with me Elder." Taniwha says with a steady voice bring his hand to his chest and tilting his head ever so slightly. "We mean no harm nor disrespect, they are just weary of strangers nowadays. I can see you are one whom knows how to survive these bleak lands, and you seem to be search for something. Perhaps we can be of mutual service? Perhaps we can help you find what you are looking for, and perhaps you can provide some advice about these lands? What do you say Elder?"

"at least, Sir Carrion- allow me to rebury the dead? What you’ve found you may keep. The spirit has fled but the flesh belongs to the earth…" Martin entreats.

Amalthea whispers to the group that at least this strange man is not part of the undead and brings up her shield to move forward with those who speak. It would be better if they could resolve this peacefully, but tensions were high so she wanted to be prepared for anything.

OOC:
Considering the words of Taniwah and Shaelyn- Martin will try and de-escalate the situation as best he can.
‘Good Sir- we seek only to pass towards our goal, the next town. We certainly bear you no ill will…"

"It would be weird if we felt anything for a roadside stranger."
Irineu follows Taniwha and Martin's lead of difusing the situation.

"I'm mostly puzzled by your actions. Why would you meddle with the graves of the destitute? The twigs under your thrall bitting mine shade make me think you are no necromancer and throws off my first guess."
Aug 14, 2026 12:38 am
The old man thinks for a moment, his wild eyes falling away from you. All the men have their hands twitching at their bows and axes, and the twig creatures twitch and snap under the old man's feet. "No..." he calls to Irineu, "necromancer I am not!" He spits at his feet, the little twig things hopping out of the way.
OOC:
Everyone who spoke to the old man, please make a group Persuasion check to determine his reaction.

"Keep your spoils, good Sir. We would not rid you of what you have found. I seek only to get the flesh into the ground." Martin says as gently as he can, patting his shovel as evidence of his intent. This place was certainly strange indeed compared to The Young Kingdoms.

Amalthea has yet to open her mouth, but she does try to look less intimidating to help avoid scaring the man.
OOC:
Nice rolls guys!

If we need another persuasion check, even if Amalthea didn't speak, I added it in just in case.

"Ahh, I have no quarrel with you, the old man says, wrapping his tattered cloak tighter to him. "I am only a druid, and I am only... looking for something." He starts moving away, disappointment evident on his face; the twig creatures move with him. "Best be careful, and watch where you tread. My kinsmen may not be so ready to hear you out." With that, he turns and walks away into the mist.

"Good work," Tyminski grunts, a rare grin on his face. "I will let the priest be at his work. My men will form a perimeter, but don't take too long," he says, emphasizing this last bit to Martin.

After the druid and the twig things are gone, you see an assortment of corpses in various states of decay. Some are moldering skeletons while others are cold bodies.

Brother Martin will heft his shovel and seek to work as fast as he can. ‘Thank you Sir Tyminski- I will be but a moment.’ the priest explains. As he works, his vulture familiar - which he calls Oskar- will watch silently over the task from the top of the gallows.

Lexi stirs in Shaelyn's arms, yawns once, and goes back to sleep. The cat really had no need for sleep, being a magical construct, but it brought her mistress a measure of comfort.
