Justin looks at his M16, no doubt it will due for training. However, he cannot help asking,
"When we leave how much ammo will we be given?"McBride, with a quizzical look passing briefly across his face, considers the question.
"you mean when we begin our long range patrol? Enough that if we have to use it, you can be assured we won’t have enough.". He looks around the room and frowns… a look unfamiliar upon his face.
He steps up on a nearby footlocker and, raising his voice for a moment,
"EVERYBODY LISTEN UP!" He lets a beat pass, looking compassionately at everyone.
"Let me have your eyes and ears for a moment." The room goes still, there’s something in his voice — not a commanding tone, but something deeper.
"I'm getting a lot of questions about ammo. Folks, we are gearing up and performing this training for a deep penetration long range reconnaissance patrol. We have a long way to go, and we don’t want to be drawing attention to ourselves doing it. So our best bet is to do our very best to not have to even fire a shot. No plan survives contact with the enemy, however. So ammunition will be issued in case it’s needed. If we get ourselves into enough trouble to have to use it, it probably won’t be enough. Certainly not to stand and fight. Maybe enough to get away. But much of that will depend on how much of this training we are about to embark on each of you takes to heart." McBride looks slowly around the room.
"After breakfast in the morning, we will shuffle over to the outpost Ammo Stores and Armory. Those of you who don’t already have an M16 patterned rifle will draw one. And we will all draw enough ammo so we are carrying the prescribed ‘combat load’ for the next few days of training. By the time we return, out mission ammo should be waiting for us. Everyone will retain a minimum of a combat load and we will carry extra ammunition beyond that on the sleds. I truly hope we don’t have to use any of it. I’d be very happy for us to drag it all back here at the end of our mission. But for now, let’s concentrate on getting the most out of the training before us. That is our first mission. And let me tell you, boys and girls… these conditions — this weather — it’s a tougher opponent than any Russian sumabitch!"
McBride grins
"And there ain’t no bullet gonna stop old man winter. He is your enemy. But he can become your ally, too." Looking around the room, McBride nods.
"Now let’s finish up and hit the rack. Lights out in 15 minutes." one last look around the room and he steps off the footlocker, his boots making almost no sound on the plywood floor.
"Further questions can keep until morning. Let’s get it finished up… 15 minutes, people." . With that, McBride heads toward the back of the hooch and his bunk.
