Out into the dark dangerous streets of the slumbering Market District, saunter Röc, Bayard, Serpent. Soon you hear the clatter and scrape of metatarsals on pavement. Your torchlight shines abruptly on a quartet of skeletons coming round a corner, carrying a struggling figure. That is Aeyn, a mage whose sleep spell proved helpless on the unslumbering undead.
Jun 22, 2026 3:24 pm
Röc gives their companions a quick nod. No time for talk; now's the time to fight.

Röc tries using their claws instead of their maul this time. Last fight didn't go so well. Might as well mix things up a little.

Röc lunges forward, and swipes.

The storm priest invokes the Lightning of Heaven pressing forth and slamming forth with an aura of lighting spraying from his outstretched palm.

The Immortal Serpent coiled, an ethereal reminder of an unbreakable vow. A pledge to the very cause of existence, and preservation of life. Enmity eternal against undeath and its corruption. Arcs of high voltage lightning crashed into the horde of undead.

OOC:
Ok then
Splinters of bone fly randomly yet somehow none of you are injured. Aeyn sprawls on the pavement, his fall "cushioned" by a cloud of disintegrating skeletons.

The torch flame flickers and sways in a sudden cold rush of air, as if spirits are departing the shattered bones.

What do you do now?
Jun 24, 2026 5:19 am
"Easy breezy." The Storm Priest couldn't help but make a weather pun.

"How you doin' sunshine?" Immortal Serpent kneels down to the beleaguered mage and dusts some skeleton off their coat. He immediately sets to looking for things the skeletons might have dropped. Every little bit of shine counted afterall. "Don't worry about us. We are the... well for now we are the good guys. How come they didn't just feed you to the zombies? Were you some sorta sacrifice I wonder?" Serpent fired off questions rapidly he looked nearing middle age but seemed almost childlike in his energy.
Jun 25, 2026 12:39 am
Aeyn stirred, and shook his head.

"Thank you, your help was most timely; I'm not sure to where I was due, but I was spared from something unpleasant."

Aeyn looked rather fresh-faced. A studious sort, not virgin of experience to say, but still maintaining some vigor of some youth in his countenance if one took a look at him. He wasn't some gnarled archmage hunkered over dusty tomes, but a young, fairly energetic magic user with the gift of youth still on his side in some fairly clean, fresh robes that haven't seen the vagaries of age.
Jun 25, 2026 10:21 pm
No thanks needed. Getting the opportunity to remind some dry old bones of where they belong is thanks enough.

Bayard studied the young man for a moment, eyeing him suspiciously. You don’t know what they wanted with you eh? Can’t think of a reason a bunch of necromantic thralls would want a young mage?
Jun 25, 2026 10:39 pm
"Probably, thinking to the simplest conclusion, you're getting at what they might've wanted. The attack was very random and unexpected, so I don't know what prompted it. They weren't the most talkative types and my own magic wasn't prepared for the stiaution." Aeyn shrugged, looking upon each of the number of his group of rescuers, sizing them up in this city of many people and stranger denizens.
Jun 26, 2026 2:06 am
"It does represent a change in their strategy. Before today they killed anyone they came across or were simply destroyed. I wonder..."

Immortal Serpent knelt into the fragments and pored through the dust. Looking for anything he might recognize he wasn't looking to confirm a bias, but rather simply searching the remains for anything interesting. "Bayard, do you remember any distinguishing features of the skeletons that were enthralled by the demon?"

"Maybe the demon requires live components. Or maybe it isn't related at all. Still, it seems strange we should encounter a demon and this strange behavior within an hour."

Serpent notices in the torchlight the bone fragments and dust seem unusually sparkly. Like mica maybe. An effect of the lightning?
Jun 26, 2026 2:46 pm
Collecting the micacious bone fragments into a pouch he ties it off and puts it on his belt. "Hmm. Mica from bone." He wonders sagaciously not coming to any conclusions.
Jun 26, 2026 3:59 pm
Röc brushes bits of bone off his hide. That fight went...better, but Röc is still slightly disappointed in their own performance.

Regardless, there's been at least once success this evening. And Röc has a newfound appreciation for the two newcomers.

"We should continue our patrol," Röc says. "There may be more in danger."
Jun 26, 2026 5:22 pm
"Yes, more fossils to fight my new reptilian friend."
Jun 27, 2026 1:24 pm
…

You continue to roam the alleys of the Market District the rest of the night. As dawn glows on the rooftops, you realize that no more skeletons are to be fought this time around.

…

What do you do?

Röc has his berth with the dwarfs in Little Grendus. Serpent and Bayard dwell in the Docks district, at the edge of the Boneyard. Where does Aeyn make his living?

Probably best not to linger. With their patrol complete, Röc returns with the dwarves to Dennis in Little Grendus, a job well done. But before they do, Röc makes sure to say thank you to their companions.

"If you aren't already part of it, the resistance is recruiting, last I checked. I can lead you to them, if you follow me."
Jun 27, 2026 5:52 pm
Aeyn serves a noble as a court mage and scribe among other things required of him.

"The Resistance?" Aeyn asked. He was intrigued, but cautious. He didn't know what it would mean to join a group like that and how it would affect his household. He didn't serve some dark overlord, that was for certain, so maybe they would find some solace in throwing their allegiance in with the Resistance, but he couldn't know without learning more.
Jun 29, 2026 6:54 am
"Lets go then. Doing something to help is why I am here. What are we resisting?"
Jun 30, 2026 2:06 pm
Röc blinks. He thought the locals would be more knowledgeable about this stuff...

"The undead," Röc says. "The Grey Society. Are you not already...never mind. Follow me." And Röc begins the trek back to Little Grendus.
Jun 30, 2026 3:00 pm
Let's say that Aeyn has heard of the Grey Society as his liege is a hanger-on to that necromantic cabal. Serpent and Bayard are a bit out of society, dwelling on the outskirts. They know that skeletons roam the city but they're not really familiar with the politics of it. They certainly don't know (as Aeyn does first-hand, and as Röc was told) that the Society has sway in the Mayor's circle.
Jun 30, 2026 4:05 pm
"Ok, Sounds simple. Lets get to The Resistance. We should kill the Grey Society. With prejudice."
Jul 2, 2026 1:38 am
"Haste seems unwise, considering I blundered into my current situation with skeletons that way," Aeyn commented. "Perhaps a little deliberation is worth something."
Jul 2, 2026 1:56 am
Immortal Serpent shrugged. "Idling is how the undead took over. It is unwise to be extreme either way."
Jul 3, 2026 8:12 pm
Do you all go to the dwarf HQ in Little Grendus? Do you go separate ways? Aeyn's household loyalty is interesting. What was he doing out in the dark? An errand for his liege? A carouse?
Jul 5, 2026 9:13 pm
Röc sighs. "I have to report back. If you're not coming, you're not coming." And Röc begins the walk back to Little Grendus.
Jul 5, 2026 9:53 pm
"I have nothing better to do. I will come along."
Jul 6, 2026 5:39 pm
Aeyn winced and bunched his hands, but fell in line, following along.

"Well, I'm not going to take my leave, now! I shall accompany you!" he said. "Something is very wrong when I was waylaid that way; I- i just hate to run afoul of my benefactor, and bring strife to a city I must call home."
OOC:
Sorry for any delay or any confusion. I don't know much about the world/city other than the few little blurbs written, so I didn't know where my character came from or how long they've been around, etc.
Jul 6, 2026 10:54 pm
Bayard shrugged his cyclopean shoulders. If Serpent is coming, so will I. Maybe the dwarves will have better food than our last stop… he said, enunciating the word food with a well-timed rumble from his gut.
Jul 7, 2026 2:03 pm
You end up back at the secure location where the dwarfs have their Resistance HQ.

Nobody is up yet, but Brigon and Gurtha lead the way in and go to wake up Donny et al.

Looking around, Bayard and Serpent and Aeyn see the same comfortable atrium where Röc dined with the dwarfs a few days ago. Low wooden table, wooden chairs and benches, potted plants, tile floor, stone walls … a nice little courtyard in the sunshine. The table is bare.

Donny emerges from a side door, yawning. "Well now," he says, "what of the night, lads? And who are you new three?"
Jul 8, 2026 12:35 am
Dwarves! Rather peculiar, muses Aeyn.

"Aeyn Sarand," Aeyn says, introducing himself to the one who was querying the new arrivals.

He bowed ever so slightly in greeting, keeping the formalities light. He didn't think Court customs were welcome in this demesne.
Jul 8, 2026 4:23 pm
"Ahoy comrades." Immortal Serpent says to the dwarves and takes a comfortable seat with a view of the door.
Jul 11, 2026 12:41 pm
OOC:
Assuming you de-brief the evening …
"A demon?" asks Donny. "What fresh hell … that's a bit over the top for the Grey Society. We thought they meddled with the dead, not demons. They've gone right black-magic now." He shakes his head.

"Well now it's time to bring the fight to them," he adds. "We can't permit that kind of horror in the Mayor's circle. Let's head to the palace and demand the Grey Society be expelled."
Jul 11, 2026 11:28 pm
"Can someone let me in on what's going on? I'm straight confused on the matter? What's this talk about a demon? I was just accosted by the dead while out not too long ago."
Jul 24, 2026 6:14 am
"Well to be blunt. I do not altogether know much about demons. As far as I am aware Bayard and I are the only people to have ever seen one and lived."

"It was fat, enormously fat, tall as a house, had yellow skin, covered in entrails, and carried a meat cleaver as big as I am. Did it have horns Bayard? I fled as soon as I saw it."

"You encountered a demon within these walls of the city, and lived to survive? Outlandish, and impressive. Troubling. What happened to the demon?"
Jul 25, 2026 12:44 pm
I confess that even my mighty bowels trembled to see so many entrails, and I don’t remember if there were horns. But there must have been. If there had been no horns, I wouldn’t have as ensorcelled by fear.

I don’t know what became of it. Only that it still roams the streets.

"I see no reason the four of us cannot kill it. Though I fear it is but the first of many of its kind."
OOC:
The Butcher I described is the very first boss you face in any Diablo Game.
Jul 26, 2026 11:42 pm
"This is serious, indeed. I'm not sure my magic would be of use against such a creature. I can only hope. If there are more than one of them within the walls of the city, then truly we are doomed without more help. We must get the the root of this evil and cut the head off the snake."
Aug 14, 2026 8:37 pm
Do you consent to Donny's plan to demand that the Grey Society be expelled? Or do you immediately head out to find and kill the demon?
Aug 15, 2026 8:51 pm
"It seems reasonable to slay the cult perhaps then we may learn of the demon's motives. I suspect though, no matter what we may learn the end is the same. It must perish."
Aug 16, 2026 12:14 am
Perhaps destroying the cult will save us the work of killing the demon. After all, it may be their occult activity which is holding it here in the first place.
Aug 17, 2026 6:40 pm
"If the Grey Society is truly the cause of bringing demons into the city, then we have but no choice but to stop them, and bring them down. Stopping them in some way, hopefully perhaps, will help dispell the demon, or demons as it is." Aeyn added to the conversation.

Aeyn was reluctant to dive into revolutionary activity to overthrow the powers-that-be in control of the city, but saw little choice when they were subjecting the city to the depredations of a demon.
Aug 18, 2026 3:45 am
"Well, shall we power on?"

Immortal Serpent's flesh thrummed and hummed fully charged with its deadly electricity.
Aug 18, 2026 8:52 pm
"What is our plan?" Aeyn asked. "Surely we must have some forethought as to how we're going to do this before we traipse out into danger."
Aug 18, 2026 9:00 pm
"Uh... sure that part..."

Immortal Serpent leaned back against the wall again. Reclining and closing his eyes... falling asleep almost instantly.

The ethereal snake shudders and coils itself around Immortal Serpent it too appears to fall asleep.
OOC:
Yes I know he doesn't require sleep. Not a dig at planning either.

Bayard looked at Aeyn with an almost malicious grin.

Two words. Escape Goat, he said, unconscious of the inaccuracy of the term he had just coined. You’re magical enough to get their attention with some sorta sorcery. Once they come meet you to recruit you or kill you, we clobber ‘em and make them tell us how to get into their tower
Aug 21, 2026 7:20 pm
"Very good," exclaims Denny the Dwarf. "But it's actually pretty simple to get into the High Keep. The trouble is the Grey Society don't all spend all their time there. They are prominent citizens, scattered throughout the city."
Aug 22, 2026 3:07 am
The snot bubble popped and Immortal Serpent roused to full waking state. "Ah yeah, lets just find one of them, kidnap them, and beat the information from them."
Aug 22, 2026 12:18 pm
It seemed as though Bayard had some nearly cruel intentions for him, but Aeyn did not flinch. He did have a look of disgust on his face at the amateurish glee at which the planning seemed to be taking place. Brute force seemed to be the solution, with a minor distraction.

"A flawed strategy, but a strategy indeed," Aeyn conceeded. "I don't see what they'll see in me, having not seen anything in me thus far, preferring my current master, but perhaps this will work."

"We can always adjust the plan on the fly." Immortal Serpent said as he stoop back up and began to head to the door.
Aug 29, 2026 6:00 pm
Where do you go? From the map, options include:
Little Grendus ("dwarf town", where you are)
Market District (where you fought the skeletons, fled the demon, and stopped to sup with Tilly)
Boneyards
Docks
Arena District
High Town

Denny the Dwarf informs you that some of the aristos have walled garden compounds in the Boneyards, but most live in High Town and play in the Arena District while their servants shop in the Market District.
Aug 29, 2026 10:41 pm
"That is odd. It seems the Naga has left us." Immortal Serpent looked around for signs of their reptilian companion. "Oh well he will either return or... well you know."

"The walled compound in the boneyard sounds like a place a cult meets. Not at all unlike my cult meeting at the ruined temple by the Serpents Bones."

I think that I am ready to go, except for selecting a race, but I am not sure if I am to wait for a specific queue or if that is the queue.

"How much of a commotion are we looking to make?" Aeyn asked, critically. "If we need one hostage, perhaps finding one at leisure in the Arena District makes more sense, instead of a more frontal assault..."
Sep 11, 2026 4:33 pm
"I would presume we will leave a trail of corpses and that will leave quite the commotion."
Sep 13, 2026 12:29 am
Bayard rolled his shoulders, muscles visibly rolling even beneath his hauberk, and laughed.

Yes, a pile of corpses does make quite the distraction! I hope they will find it as humorous as I do!
Sep 13, 2026 1:47 am
Aeyn rolled his eyes at the indelicacy of the solution his peers were taking. It didn't suit him. He wondered if he was not better off still better in the arms of the skeletons that had kidnapped him in the first place, but pushed aside those feelings, as they were discovering the darkness that was intended for.
Sep 13, 2026 2:18 am
"Ahah he hasn't developed a taste for it."

Immortal Serpent began to walk down to the Boneyard whistling a jaunty tune. Utterly relaxed at the prospect of being assaulted by skeletons. Excited to kill demon summoning losers.
Sep 15, 2026 3:01 pm
Which way do you head to the Boneyard east of town? (refer to map) Do you go straight the Market District, or the Docks? How do you find out how to find the compound you're seeking?
Sep 15, 2026 11:43 pm
Immortal Serpent will just follow the roadsigns being blessed by his priestly upbringing in the super power of literacy. He has no plan and expects to find a group of wizard hunting cultists to come attempt to kidnap Aeyn before long.

He turned to Aeyn and gave him a wicked grin. "This is exciting. We have never been hunted by cultists before. Usually we have to find them in cellars and dark alleys. Not that we mind that part it is just slower. Say Bayard, been thinking on what might kill a demon. Wager you a brand new halberd that if we impale that bastard with your halberd and I hit the halberd with lightning it ought to do the trick."
Sep 17, 2026 7:53 pm
As you traipse through Little Grendus toward the bridge that leads to the Docks, admiring the odors and sights of the dwarf part of town, an odd-looking figure steps out of a door way and salutes you.

This is @MacConnell fire dwarf, "Echo".
Sep 18, 2026 3:08 pm
His eyes glint slightly with any near source of light, like those of a deer or more appropriately a wolf. He can see in the dark. He nods at the other people, quickly noting that they alive and not some walking abominations, and gestures like a wave with his staff. It seems likely that he is used to carrying the staff like it holds some reference of nostalgia rather than any functional use. "Happy hunting?" he queries.
