Röc, Bayard, Serpent, Aeyn

Out into the dark dangerous streets of the slumbering Market District, saunter Röc, Bayard, Serpent. Soon you hear the clatter and scrape of metatarsals on pavement. Your torchlight shines abruptly on a quartet of skeletons coming round a corner, carrying a struggling figure. That is Aeyn, a mage whose sleep spell proved helpless on the unslumbering undead.

Röc gives their companions a quick nod. No time for talk; now's the time to fight.

Röc tries using their claws instead of their maul this time. Last fight didn't go so well. Might as well mix things up a little.

Röc lunges forward, and swipes.

Despite his groaning recalcitrance in the sitting room, Bayard lunged forward as quickly as an adder, his speed belying his bulk.

The storm priest invokes the Lightning of Heaven pressing forth and slamming forth with an aura of lighting spraying from his outstretched palm.

The Immortal Serpent coiled, an ethereal reminder of an unbreakable vow. A pledge to the very cause of existence, and preservation of life. Enmity eternal against undeath and its corruption. Arcs of high voltage lightning crashed into the horde of undead.

Ok then
Splinters of bone fly randomly yet somehow none of you are injured. Aeyn sprawls on the pavement, his fall "cushioned" by a cloud of disintegrating skeletons.

The torch flame flickers and sways in a sudden cold rush of air, as if spirits are departing the shattered bones.

What do you do now?

"Easy breezy." The Storm Priest couldn't help but make a weather pun.

"How you doin' sunshine?" Immortal Serpent kneels down to the beleaguered mage and dusts some skeleton off their coat. He immediately sets to looking for things the skeletons might have dropped. Every little bit of shine counted afterall. "Don't worry about us. We are the... well for now we are the good guys. How come they didn't just feed you to the zombies? Were you some sorta sacrifice I wonder?" Serpent fired off questions rapidly he looked nearing middle age but seemed almost childlike in his energy.

Aeyn stirred, and shook his head.

"Thank you, your help was most timely; I'm not sure to where I was due, but I was spared from something unpleasant."

Aeyn looked rather fresh-faced. A studious sort, not virgin of experience to say, but still maintaining some vigor of some youth in his countenance if one took a look at him. He wasn't some gnarled archmage hunkered over dusty tomes, but a young, fairly energetic magic user with the gift of youth still on his side in some fairly clean, fresh robes that haven't seen the vagaries of age.

No thanks needed. Getting the opportunity to remind some dry old bones of where they belong is thanks enough.

Bayard studied the young man for a moment, eyeing him suspiciously. You don’t know what they wanted with you eh? Can’t think of a reason a bunch of necromantic thralls would want a young mage?
Jun 25, 2026 10:39 pm
"Probably, thinking to the simplest conclusion, you're getting at what they might've wanted. The attack was very random and unexpected, so I don't know what prompted it. They weren't the most talkative types and my own magic wasn't prepared for the stiaution." Aeyn shrugged, looking upon each of the number of his group of rescuers, sizing them up in this city of many people and stranger denizens.

"It does represent a change in their strategy. Before today they killed anyone they came across or were simply destroyed. I wonder..."

Immortal Serpent knelt into the fragments and pored through the dust. Looking for anything he might recognize he wasn't looking to confirm a bias, but rather simply searching the remains for anything interesting. "Bayard, do you remember any distinguishing features of the skeletons that were enthralled by the demon?"

"Maybe the demon requires live components. Or maybe it isn't related at all. Still, it seems strange we should encounter a demon and this strange behavior within an hour."

Serpent notices in the torchlight the bone fragments and dust seem unusually sparkly. Like mica maybe. An effect of the lightning?
Jun 26, 2026 2:46 pm
Collecting the micacious bone fragments into a pouch he ties it off and puts it on his belt. "Hmm. Mica from bone." He wonders sagaciously not coming to any conclusions.

Röc brushes bits of bone off his hide. That fight went...better, but Röc is still slightly disappointed in their own performance.

Regardless, there's been at least once success this evening. And Röc has a newfound appreciation for the two newcomers.

"We should continue our patrol," Röc says. "There may be more in danger."
Jun 26, 2026 5:22 pm
"Yes, more fossils to fight my new reptilian friend."

…

You continue to roam the alleys of the Market District the rest of the night. As dawn glows on the rooftops, you realize that no more skeletons are to be fought this time around.

…

What do you do?

Röc has his berth with the dwarfs in Little Grendus. Serpent and Bayard dwell in the Docks district, at the edge of the Boneyard. Where does Aeyn make his living?

Probably best not to linger. With their patrol complete, Röc returns with the dwarves to Dennis in Little Grendus, a job well done. But before they do, Röc makes sure to say thank you to their companions.

"If you aren't already part of it, the resistance is recruiting, last I checked. I can lead you to them, if you follow me."
Jun 27, 2026 5:52 pm
Aeyn serves a noble as a court mage and scribe among other things required of him.

"The Resistance?" Aeyn asked. He was intrigued, but cautious. He didn't know what it would mean to join a group like that and how it would affect his household. He didn't serve some dark overlord, that was for certain, so maybe they would find some solace in throwing their allegiance in with the Resistance, but he couldn't know without learning more.
Jun 29, 2026 6:54 am
"Lets go then. Doing something to help is why I am here. What are we resisting?"
Jun 30, 2026 2:06 pm
Röc blinks. He thought the locals would be more knowledgeable about this stuff...

"The undead," Röc says. "The Grey Society. Are you not already...never mind. Follow me." And Röc begins the trek back to Little Grendus.
Jun 30, 2026 3:00 pm
Let's say that Aeyn has heard of the Grey Society as his liege is a hanger-on to that necromantic cabal. Serpent and Bayard are a bit out of society, dwelling on the outskirts. They know that skeletons roam the city but they're not really familiar with the politics of it. They certainly don't know (as Aeyn does first-hand, and as Röc was told) that the Society has sway in the Mayor's circle.
