You’ve been working through the gear you have and the form you’ve been given since breakfast, sorting piles of winter clothing and trying to match out of date or civilian gear to the ECWCS layers on the sheets. Those with issued gear have been checking serviceability, things like straps on rucksacks, web gear, pouches, etc. The hooch smells like canvas, cold nylon, and the faint chemical bite of stove fuel that seems to cling to everything.
Lunch was a simple affair, cold sandwiches and a hot broth with a few noodles and potato chunks. Nothing fancy, but it added some warmth and calories, without the kind of heavy carbs that put people to sleep. One welcome discovery: the chow hall staff kept the coffee hot and flowing all day, and nobody complained about that.
Lunch also provided a chance for questions about gear to be asked and answered by either McBride or Thrace. Both had been consistently available in the back of the hooch, but most of the replacements had been reluctant to ‘interrupt’ the leadership. Lunch brought them out from the hooch and into the chow hall with everyone else.
Suddenly, the big, heavy door of the platoon hooch snaps open, letting in a blast of frigid air, snow, and nearly blinding light. Heads turn. Voices stop mid-sentence. Even the clatter of various personal gear being checked out goes quiet.

Ghosts — that’s what they looked like. All white, frost‑rimmed beards, silhouettes blurred by the wind‑driven snow blowing in behind them. Each figure moved with a kind of deliberate, inevitable exhaustion that only deepened the illusion. Ten forms in all came through the door, which then thuds shut and restoring the dimness to the hooch.
The exhausted figures moved and automatically began stripping off outer layers and dropping rucks. As eyes adjusted to the dim lighting, one of the soldiers that had just come in looked around and said, "What in the hell is this happy horseshit!" He turned to the patrol leader and continued, "Hey Sarge, we get reinforced or somethin’?"
SSG Rutherford Beltrain, already down to his fleece top, suspenders hanging limply from his trouser waistband, turned to face the soldier. "Dammit DeStefano, I’ve been out trekking through this medieval forest with you yahoos (he pronounced it like yay-whose, not ya-hoos) for the past 6 days trying to pin down that aircraft wreckage. I know exactly what you know… which is nuthin! Nobody sent a runner out to tell me what’s going on back here." Beltrain looks at another of the returning soldiers, "What about you, Jimmy? You get any special word?"
‘Jimmy’, the last soldier through the door and thus still in full overwhites, was currently working on securing the door against the wind. "Damned Carpathians wind, I swear it has a mind of its own!" Finally triumphing over the door, he turns back to Beltrain and says, "What was that, Sarn’t… oh yeah… according to the fuckin’ elf maiden who visited me last night, these fine folk are here to help us pack up all this shit and go home cuz the war is over and a whole rookery of giant eagles are coming to carry us home." Jimmy Wolfe fixed DeStefano with a profound What-The-Fuck look and says, "Now, dammit Carl… shut the fuck up."
