Yep, Lizardfolk seems right!

While "lizardfolk" says something, it is about as specific as "human". That is there are many varieties of lizard in the world and swamp, and so many types of lizardfolk.

What does Röc look like? He's big? For a lizardfolk, or a human? How tall? What clothes does he wear? Lizards have different throat structures than mammals; can we say there is a fairly common gestural language by which he can communicate with Drakonheimers? Or do lizardfolk have larynxes like mammalian peoples?

Does Röc know anyone in Drakonheim?

The road out of the delta marsh does not exist. It was there before, and then the wilderness whelmed it. Cobbles remain, tumbled by the forceful roots of marsh grass that stands twice tall as Röc. Yellow stalks from last year mix with the shorter green and sharp-edged leaves of this year's shoots. The grass smells musty-fresh as the breeze sways it.

Röc moves easily through the grasses, aware of his surroundings as a warrior is.

After time he moves through a gap between grass-stands, and his clawed foot presses down on different grass. The marsh edge! Ahead he can see an actual road and at the very horizon, miles away, the distant white smudge that must be the walls of Drakonheim.

The road through the grassland is easy; he meets no opposition, just passing a few flocks of sheep.

As he reaches the outskirt of the city, Röc may be disappointed to find no guarded gates. The walls rise high and gleam white, but they are surrounded by broken hovels half-overgrown by scrubby bushes and trees. There is probably half a mile to go among the ruined buildings before reaching the wall.

Does Röc poke around this area, or continue into the city?

Hmm...I want him to be noticably big, enough to make heads turn, but not so big it's inconvenient or disruptive. So...maybe 2 meters tall?
tibbius says:
What clothes does he wear?
Having come from a lizardfolk tribe, his garb would probably be tribal. Necklace and armbands, a harness for a backpack, some crotch coverings. He'd need more "civilized" clothes in the near future, though his armor can serve as that in a pinch.
tibbius says:

For communication's sake, it's probably best if Röc has a larynx or equivalent.
tibbius says:

Nope! He's as green an adventurer as it gets. Though if you have a quest NPC in mind, I'm more than willing to have Röc know them for the sake of the plot.

Great!

Does Röc explore the ruined stone cottages, or continue among them toward the city wall?
May 22, 2026 7:30 pm
Röc might as well peek inside the ruined huts. Röc didn't have the luxury of securing their things before exile, and his learned instincts tell him to loot. Still, Röc will try to be cautious; who knows what claims these huts, and if they're friendly. Especially when Röc is still dressed in his tribal garb. It's quite possible Röc could be mistaken for a raider, so Röc makes sure to keep their weapon sheathed and try not to surprise anyone.

Röc also makes sure to stop and pet the sheep. Röc never got to pet animals before.
May 22, 2026 9:09 pm
The sheep are shy or playful — it's hard to tell — and scatter and frolic away as Röc attempts to approach them.

The huts are not entirely deserted. There's a faint odor of cooking meat near one of them. As Röc approaches, his claws skitter against a piece of stone. Immediately, he hears startled motion inside the hut. What does he do?
May 23, 2026 1:20 am
This day isn't going well so far. No petting the sheep, and now Röc's about to startle a poor homeowner. And worst of all, no petting the sheep!

Röc clears their throat and speaks. "Hello?" Hopefully the stranger in the hut is friendly. And doesn't freak out at the sight of a big lizardfolk warrior encroaching on private property uninvited.
May 23, 2026 1:37 am
After a brief silence like breath being held, a small person looks around the edge of the hut's doorway. They are about three feet tall with curly hair, and big green eyes. It's not clear whether their eyes ALWAYS are that big, or whether they're frightened of Röc. All he can see is their head looking around the doorframe.
May 23, 2026 3:03 pm
They're adorable. Röc resists the urge to pet them, even though their big green eyes and fluffy mop of hair clearly deserves it.

Instead, Röc thinks back to their upbringing in their former tribe, and what the shaman would advise: "Eat them already, Röc!"

...on second thought, maybe a polite greeting would do.

"Um...hello. How are you?"
May 23, 2026 6:34 pm
The small person gasps and steps forward around the door frame. "That wasn't what I expected!" she exclaims. "I'm … fine. Uh, how are you?"
May 23, 2026 11:18 pm
"Uh...fine.

Röc is starting to realize his life in the tribe did not train him to be a conversationalist. A raider, a bandit, a pillager, sure. But a conversationalist? Not particularly. You just didn't need to speak much when you're stabbing a poor traveler to death and looting their things. If anything, the less you spoke, the better; every word brings potential for an ambush to be revealed.

...Röc really hopes there isn't a bounty on his head. In his tribe, you only get exiled if you're too dangerous to kill. And you're only considered dangerous if you've taken a few lives. Sure, Röc avoided it when possible, to the ire of his tribemates. But when it wasn't possible...

This brooding isn't progressing the conversation. Maybe...try being honest?

"Uh, I'm Röc. I thought these huts were abandoned. I'm sorry."
May 24, 2026 12:15 am
"Oh. Uh, hi, Rourke. I'm Diffin. I'm a halfling, well, I guess you can see that." She looks diffidently up at Röc. "You're from the delta?"
May 24, 2026 4:38 pm
Röc hesitates. Identifying with the lizardfolk tribes of the swamps might not be the best idea, given their likely reputation. On the other hand, can Röc really deny it? Drakonheim is supposed to be somewhat tolerant of...unusual creatures. And the way Röc's dressed, well, it gives the game away.

"Not anymore," Röc says. An honest answer, even if it's painful to admit. "I didn't mean to bother you, I was just passing by. I'm sorry."

Röc takes a breath. As friendly as Diffin is, it's unlikely he's offering work or renting out a room. And right now, Röc needs coin and a place to stay. "Do you, uh, know where the nearest gate is? I didn't see any from the road."
May 24, 2026 4:44 pm
The scared/friendly halfling gives Röc quick directions with nervous words and hand gestures. Then he's on his way.

About halfway from Diffin's cottage to the wall, Röc brushes between a pair of thorny bushes that mostly block an alley between buildings. Then he sees them:

two odd-smelling humans. They smell like death. They were facing away from Röc but as the thorns catch on his scanty clothing, the noise draws their attention. They turn toward him … their eyes glow green, in the dim light under the cloudy sky. They open their mouths, soundlessly, as if yawning … and they start to charge toward him.

What does he do?
May 24, 2026 11:01 pm
Röc readies his claws, but doesn't quite draw his weapon yet. They could simply be approaching to talk...though the pace of their charge makes Röc guarded. If they try anything, they'll taste claw. Or at least that's the plan.
May 25, 2026 11:31 am
Up close they have the sour reek of decaying meat, and there is no longer time for Röc to ready his maul or space to swing. Their teeth glisten as they try to seize Röc.

Röc is at risk of being grappled and bitten. Does he try to break free? Try to injure the predatory dead? What does he attempt?
May 25, 2026 3:44 pm
Röc told himself they'll taste claw. Now it's time to slice.

Röc's aggression works out well: his swift claws rip the rotten head right off one of his foul-smelling assailants. Its body collides with the other, sending that one stumbling into the alley wall.

Röc now has choices: safely flee? Finish off the remaining zombie? Or …?
May 26, 2026 3:09 pm
Röc considers fleeing, but to where? Back to poor Diffin's cottage, a zombie in pursuit? Run all the way back to their tribe and beg for forgiveness? Like that'd ever happen.

No, Röc has to fight. If these thralls were living humans, Röc would try to scare off the other at this point, preserve their life. But there's no life left to preserve.

Röc's adrenaline peaking, he charges the remaining zombie with claws outstretched. One way or another, Röc's getting into Drakonheim.

Victorious, does Röc roar, shriek, or silently appraise the aftermath?

The way to the gate is open.

Proceeding, Röc after about ten minutes reaches an unguarded opening in the tall white bony wall of the city. It literally was built from dragonbones, apparently, and to have so many big bones the fire lizard must have been immense!

Peeking through the gate as he approaches, Röc sees dozens of people moving along the street. They all are significantly shorter than he, although notably taller than Diffin. Not what Röc believes to be "human normal size" people. They're pretty thick-looking too. Keen lizard ears pick up sing-song, sibilant speech. Perhaps these are … dwarves?

(Entering "Little Grendus" from the Boneyard)
May 27, 2026 3:20 pm
The adrenaline of victory washes over Röc, and he unleashes a mighty ROAR to the heavens before then chowing down on his kill...only to spit out the rotten flesh. Disgusting. He'll have to find food elsewhere.

As Röc enters the city streets, he begins his search for a tavern, or better yet an inn. He tries his best to blend into the crowd, but that's not exactly easy given his appearance and stature. Probably best to just move fast.
May 27, 2026 5:32 pm
The dwarfs in the streets are not blind, and they give due attention to a bipedal lizard twice their height and carrying a very war-like maul. Especially as the cannibal lizards of the southern delta are a well-known trope in children's tales.

Nobody steps up to Röc until he comes up under a swinging sign: a flat wooden panel portraying the bloody severed head of a lizard much like himself. Smells of food waft to his nostrils from the open door, and he can both hear and see the dwarfs eating, drinking, and loudly talking within the building.
May 27, 2026 9:09 pm
From the reactions of pedestrians, it seems being discreet isn't an option. Röc starts to wonder if he should find another establishment in a more diverse neighborhood. But the more Röc walks around aimlessly, the greater the chance he encounters another one of the zombies. Röc's heard the rumors, that necromancers operate openly in this city. It's what led him to believe this city might be accepting of, well, monsters like himself. And if the necromancers' thralls attack him on sight, well...probably best to get off the street, and soon.

Röc enters the establishment, coin in hand, planning to order whatever's on the menu. Hopefully payment will smooth over the server's attitude. And given he has no leads on work, asking a knowledgeable bartender is the next best thing. If they're even willing to serve him, that is.
May 28, 2026 1:06 pm
Röc has to significantly duck his reptilian head to enter the tavern. When he does so, the general conversation continues for a few moments. Then silence spreads.

He approaches the bar. The bartender looks at him with a wary expression. After Röc pauses for a moment, questioning whether to attempt a casual lean, the bartender speaks: "Uh. Yep, you're a … yep. Huh. Well, ok then. Do you drink or eat dwarf food?"
May 28, 2026 3:25 pm
"...sure." Röc's never had a proper meal, he realizes. Not like the civilized people do. First time for everything, he supposes.

Röc places his coinpurse on the bar. "I'm, uh, sorry for the ruckus. I'm in Drakonheim looking for honest work."

The silence is deafening. Röc can feel eyes staring at him, like he's on a stage. Something new awakens in him, something he's never had to encounter before: social anxiety.

"Uh..." Röc is realizing that, despite his exile, he really is a warrior at heart. And a warrior's home is in battle, not conversation. Achingly awkward conversation.

If Röc had sweat glands, he'd be drenched in nervous sweat.
May 28, 2026 10:04 pm
Not too near Röc, but fairly close along the waist high (on him) drinks counter, a drunken dwarf wobbles on his stool and laughs. "Hhonest?!" he exclaims. "In Li-il-il-il Gren.Dus?" He waves an empty mug above his head, a broad gesture toward the room at large. "Does we a look like Hhonest dw-wa-warfths?"

Someone in the silence chuckles, another one guffaws, and abruptly the room is filled again with conversation.

The drunkard bleers his eyes direct up at Röc: "Iz-a worrier, oncest," he says more quietly. "Hah! WARyur." He taps his empty mug on the counter. "Is you … from the … southerrern marshEZ den?"
May 29, 2026 1:42 am
Once, Röc's tribe stole a keg of dwarven ale as part of a raid. The memories of drunken lizardfolk are...not pleasant. And the stench of alcohol coming off this dwarf's breath is bringing back those memories.

"Not from the marsh anymore," Röc says. "Doubt you're hiring for...whatever it is you do for a living?"
May 29, 2026 4:20 pm
"Donny…yz is hhiring," slurs the dwarf. "I'm Kaalish. By the way."
May 29, 2026 8:16 pm
A lead on a job! From a drunkard, sure, but coin is coin. And if Röc is going to survive in civilization, they'll need that coin.

"Nice to meet you, uh, Kaalish. Is Donny your friend? I'd like to meet them."

Still slurring his speech, the dwarf slides off his bar stool and gestures Röc to follow him. Out the back door of the tavern into a dirty courtyard paved with large rectangular pavers, a square bronze drain grate at the middle. Momentarily, Röc expects to be led down the grate. After a few moments, Röc's keen lizard organs perceive footsteps shuffling toward the other side of that door. Then there is a bolt drawn back, and the door is pushed open to admit Kaalish and Röc. Another dwarf stands just inside the door, holding a lantern; the passage is windowless and dark. Röc has to duck down low to fit, the architecture is dwarf size, he nearly is on all fours.

The passage leads to another door, which opens outward onto another courtyard. Several dwarfs are seated on a pair of low benches at opposite sides of a tea table, and the mugs and pot on the table suggest they are in fact drinking tea.
OOC:
Has Röc ever had tea?
There are griddle cakes, and honey, too.

All five of the seated dwarfs look up as the escort dwarf gestures Röc and Kaalish forward.

"Well, now," says the most-bearded dwarf. "What have we, Kaalish?" His beard is luxuriously silver and his voice is deep and melodic.

"Fresh soljerer," Kaalish slurs.

"Good on ye," the silver-bearded dwarf replies. "And what's your name?" he gazes keenly into Röc's lizardy eyes.
Jun 1, 2026 4:03 pm
Röc has, in fact, never had tea. They've had close, though; his former tribe's shaman concocted all sorts of "tea" from the swamp foliage. The tastes were... questionable.

As for the dwarves drinking the tea, they don't seem like army recruiters. But what does Röc know? Led through a dark alley, past locked doors opened by secret knocking patterns...maybe it's just how it works in Drakonheim. Being a soldier sounds...not fun, but Röc is capable enough. And he needs the coin.

"Röc," Röc replies to the silver-bearded dwarf, but stays silent otherwise. Probably best not to speak unless spoken to.

Röc eyes the griddle cakes and honey. Not meat, like Röc's used to. But Röc always struggled with hunting anyways. Too much sneaking about, not enough primal combat. Though regardless of how it's obtained, probably best not to eat their host's food unless it's offered.
Jun 1, 2026 6:32 pm
"I'm Dennis," says the silver-beard. "You know that the mayor of this good city has made a deal with necromancers, to let their minions guard the streets and businesses?" he demands.
Jun 2, 2026 2:08 am
"I've heard rumors, seen undead on patrol," Röc says. "These guards don't seem to like me much. Attacked me without a word."

Röc is getting the feeling that these dwarves are recruiting him into some sort of resistance. Though, if Röc already can't walk the streets without being attacked by zombies, maybe a resistance is the safest place to be.
Jun 2, 2026 10:16 pm
"Yep," chuckles Dennis, "those bastards don't say much. Just grab and bite when they decide you've done wrong or been in the wrong place. Supposedly the Grey Society offer amulets to keep them at bay. But ya gotta get on a list to get an amulet, and there's some kind of vetting process. So most folk just try to avoid the patrols." He looks quizzically at Röc. "Reckon some of them words you might not know?"
Jun 3, 2026 12:41 am
Röc understands words! Mostly. Dennis didn't use any big ones, at least. Röc's tribe might not have been the best conversationalists, but coordinating an ambush still required a decent degree of communication skills. And Röc's tribe loved their ambushes.

"Only words I don't know are the Grey Society," Röc says. "You don't make them sound so good, with their list. They with the necromancers?"
Jun 3, 2026 11:27 am
"haha. They are the necromancers," Dennis replies. "Well, then. Are you interested in re-killing undead patrols? We can offer food, drink, shelter, and a bit of silver too."
Jun 3, 2026 2:38 pm
"I'm in," Röc says. Privately, Röc contemplates how they've left their tribe only to once again find a living fighting. Though perhaps what matters is what you fight for.

Röc thinks he likes this Dennis character.

There's a place for Röc to rest! And food is … interesting. Not like the reed-smoked fish of the delta marsh, a different type of meat and differently cooked and flavored. "Roast" meat, with "pepper" and "cloves".

Mid-morning of the following day, Dennis holds a "briefing" and explains a plan. This evening just before sunset, Röc, and two sturdy-looking dwarfs, will cross the Big Bridge into the Market District and then wander the streets through twilight. The rumor is that the undead patrols sometimes drag people from house in darkness. Röc's group are to ambush and destroy any undead they see encroaching on homes. Otherwise avoid the street patrols.
Jun 4, 2026 3:33 pm
The meat tastes...expensive. Röc feels like they're wasting some chef's time, when he could just have the meat unflavored. It's not bad, the opposite in fact. But Röc can't help but miss their "poor person's food".

No, Röc doesn't understand themselves, either.

Röc nods along to the plan. He understands the logic; fighting every patrol they see would quickly wear them out. But he can't help but wonder how lucky they'll need to be to catch a home invasion in the act. Maybe if the victim cries for help, they'll be able to locate them? And avoiding the patrols until then will be challenging, to say the least.

Röc's starting to realize this resistance is under-resourced. But they're providing food and shelter, so he'll have to be a loyal soldier.

Before dismissing from the briefing, Röc gets the names and specialties of his fellow soldiers. He'd like to know more about whose watching his back, and whose back he's watching in turn.
Jun 4, 2026 4:48 pm
Gurtha is a sturdy dwarf woman with a double chin. She has a dour expression at all times. She appears to be a skilled warrior. She talks A LOT about nothing significant.

Brigon is an equally sturdy male dwarf, whose hair is spiked like a porcupine. His face is friendly but he says almost nothing. Röc's not sure what to make of Brigon. The man carries himself in such a way that Röc kind of forgets he's in the room unless looking right at him.
Jun 4, 2026 9:32 pm
Funny. One dwarf talks forever, the other barely talks. Regardless, Röc answers any questions about himself the two may have. It's only fair, given Röc's the outsider among them.

Once chit-chat has concluded, it's time for planning...only Röc realizes they're completely out of their depth. Yes, Röc has attended many ambush planning meetings while apart of his former tribe. But those ambushes were always with home field advantage. The swamps are not the city, and so Röc is broadly unfamiliar with the terrain.

To compensate, Röc spends as much time as possible studying maps of the city, in particular the Market District. Röc spots what looks to be an open plaza near the bridge, which seems to Röc to be too easy to become surrounded in. But it doesn't look like there's any way to avoid it without going past potential patrols, and it has good access to the rest of the district.

Röc presents his findings to the group. Röc shares his opinion that the plaza seems the best place to post up, with both easy access to the bridge and the rest of the district. The group can station there until they hear or see any signs of a home invasion; broken down doors, shouting, etcetera. They'll be able to quickly respond, and if they bite off more than they can chew, retreat across the Big Bridge.
Jun 5, 2026 12:49 pm
"Well sure, that makes sense," says Gurtha, "but I'm worried that standing out in the midst of the plaza will make us real obvious once the merchants close up for the night. Maybe we lurk in an alley just off the plaza? Or stroll around the edge? I dunno. Something?"

Brigon smiles and nods.
Jun 6, 2026 12:23 am
Back in Röc's former tribe, interjections like Gurtha's were usually rewarded with a claw to the face. But Röc decides against such a reward. Gurtha's got a point, anyways: a wide-open plaza isn't the best place to hide from passing patrols.

"All right then," Röc says, "We could lurk in the alleys east of the plaza, where most of the buildings in the district are. It'll take us farther away from the Big Bridge, so if we get into trouble, it'll be harder to fall back. But if the escape across the Big Bridge gets blocked, we'll be closer to the Docks; we could try fleeing there and getting back into Little Grendus from the eastern bridge. All depends on how the patrols react, if an alarm is raised at all."

Röc bellows a breath of slight exhaustion. This plotting stuff is a bit too cloak-and-dagger for him. The entire mission seems ill-conceived; why wait for the patrols to start pulling people out of houses, when they could be attacking the patrols pre-emptively? Sure, this resistance is undermanned, but if the gate houses leading into the Market District could be taken over, even briefly, then any portcullises could be lowered. Cut the pullies, they stay locked shut until repaired, delaying any patrols from even entering the district. It's like how Röc's tribe would divide caravans and block escape routes before an ambush, so none of the meat got away. You don't need to block it permanently; just long enough to delay your enemy's plans. And if the Grey Society's zombies only drag people from their homes at night, then maybe, if the gates were broken until morning...

But Röc is being paid to follow orders. The plan is, avoid patrols until they pull people from their houses. And if Röc doesn't follow orders, he expects to kiss his accomodations goodbye.

Röc lets out another breath, low and grumbling. And he goes with his employer's plan.
Jun 6, 2026 1:34 am
Twilight comes over the Market Plaza and the squad of Röc, Gurtha, and Brigon move east into the alleys.

Loitering in darkness, it doesn't take long before an approaching torchbearer spots them. "Hoi!" the halfling lad? exclaims. He backpedals almost onto the toes of his escorted party, an elderly human gentleman who shouts at him before dropping jaw at the sight of Röc and two dwarfs in the shadows. "I'll ha the watch on yez!" the old man exclaims as he scampers away toward the plaza again.

Well, that went bad almost immediately. Röc briefly considers chasing down the old man, but decides against attacking a civilian. Even if that civilian is calling the undead watch for the crime of loitering. Röc briefly wonders what other "crimes" this man reports to the watch, and what happens to the "criminals" he reports. The rumors of home abductions are starting to make sense, at least.

Röc places a bet. If he can ambush the incoming watchmen...

"Hide and get ready to strike," Röc says to Gurtha and Brigon. "Or run, if you'd prefer. I'll lure the watch to me." And Röc unsheathes his maul.

While waiting for the watch to arrive, Röc grabs barrels, crates, carts, doors, chunks of pavement out of the ground; whatever's big and heavy and nearby. And, should he be able, Röc places the obstacles to block the path the old man took. Ideally, this barricade will buy time for Röc's fellows or create a funnel for the watchmen. But can Röc complete the task?

Röc lost track of the halfling in the clamor; they're stealthy folk. Brigon seems to be a natural at hiding, Röc's lost track of him as well. Gurtha is doing a fair job of lurking in the shadows.

It takes not too long, but long enough, for the skeletal watchmen to appear. They move without torches but the clatter and scratch of their bony feet on cobbles announces their approach. There's four of them carrying clubs. Röc has his maul, while the dwarfs were equipped with clubs as well. A battle of blunt instruments.

That was embarrassing. Still, the plan worked, even if Röc got a bit scuffed up. Normally, in this stage of the ambush, Röc's tribe would be celebrating victory. But this seems a bad time for that.

Röc quickly checks in with their fellows to ensure there's no injuries. Then, a quick debrief:

"I don't think more will come, but we should move anyways. Let's go." And Röc turns to the shadows, raising their voice so it can be heard. "Guide, if you're still nearby: we have no problem with you. Let us be."

"This way," Gurtha urges down the second alley on the left. It jogs several times alternately left and right according to the varying dimensions of the stone-walled buildings along it. There are smelly and slippery patches; the alleys of Drakonheim also are open sewers, and it has been a few days since a good rain fell.

Gurtha halts you at a splintery-looking door with faint light glowing around its frame. She knocks on the door.

Röc is used to the ick of swamps, but these alleys are...disappointing? Röc would've expected a city to deal with its waste better than this. Maybe if the city had a proper government, there would be people trying to improve things.

Röc follows Gurtha silently without quarrel. Part of basic battlefield communication is knowing when to shut up and listen instead of waste time arguing, and this is one of those times.

The door is opened into the lamplight. Röc may have expected a dwarf, but instead he sees a friendly female elf. She looks at him without concern and gestures him into the dwelling.

Inside is a warm room furnished with two overstuffed chairs, a plump long sofa, and a low table. Two other elves are seated in the chairs, finishing a dinner of bread and cheese and apples. They glance at the entrants and their gazes fix on Röc. They say nothing. The dark-haired man gulps down a chunk of food.

"Hey Tilly," says Gurtha cheerfully to the elf. "Hey Vinsenz, Dolan." Brigon grunts and sits down on the sofa, reaching for a loaf of bread.

"What, wash your hands!" Tilly scolds. Brigon grunts again and gets up, goes over to the ewer in the corner of the room and splashes his hands over the basin.

What does Röc do?

Röc had prepared for so many battlefield eventualities. But nothing could prepare him for the dreaded, horrible, friendly conversation.

Röc feels the gazes resting upon him. "Uh...hi, Röc says.

...

...

...Röc preferred getting grappled by skeletons.

The room is a bit crowded with six people, even though two of them are smaller-sized. There don't seem to be enough seats for Röc in particular. Does he try to squeeze onto the sofa, or loom awkwardly over the seated folk?

It seems rude to not sit. But trying to somehow finangle Röc's thick lizard tail while sitting on the couch seems even more awkward.

Röc sits cross-legged on the floor. Surely, this is the least awkward possibility, Röc thinks.

Assuming Röc is able to ease into the conversation …
The lizardman learns that there is a host of undead in the city of Drakonheim, "living" among its ordinary citizens as watchmen and soldiers. They were raised by the Grey Society to defend the city against a siege by hobgoblins. The Grey Society had been a rumor for a long time, but the hobgoblin threat gave an opportunity for them to step into daylight as "saviors of the city". Now they have become de facto rulers through their skeletal minions; the mayor and his council seek approval for all things from the Grey Lady who runs the Society.

So without the Grey Society, Drakonheim had too few soldiers...Röc wonders how Drakonheim survived before the Grey Society. In Röc's tribe, everyone was a warrior; Röc guessed the other races weren't as extreme, but to have so few soldiers that they turned to necromancy?

Röc shakes his head, listening along but remaining silent. However, he tries his best not to get too enraptured by the conversation. He still needs to keep an ear out for any undead pulling people out of their homes.

We're going to pause on this scene for a couple days so that @jomsviking and @plebeianG might have a chance to join us.
