[Interest Check] - V20 Chronicle in Modern-Night South Florida

In light of all the World of Darkness (especially Vampire) games popping up on here, I want to try running my own. I am a longtime player of the WoD but have only run it myself a handful of times. I very much prefer the 20th Anniversary editions, but this time I'd like to incorporate some of the interesting metaplot changes from 5e.

My idea is to run a game in a South Florida setting where rising political and environmental unrest in the mortal world is mirrored by the slow encroach of Gehenna in the Kindred world. The Kindred world is fractured by this unrest, especially since the Beckoning has spirited away the most powerful Elders on both sides of the conflict. Miami, which has historically been a Sabbat city, is now shattered like the rest of SFL into an open war between the three sects where ground is gained and lost every night. In the midst of this chaos, the PCs are the relatively young Neonates and Ancillae that are left to pick up the pieces of their crumbling domains.

This is a homebrew that I have been working on for some time, and I want to focus on the South Florida cities of Miami, Boca Raton, and Ft. Lauderdale. This could work with any kind of party: from any sect or independent. I also have no current structure or endpoint, I just want to run a big sandbox where the party is free to pursue their own goals. Of course, this doesn't mean absolute freedom. There are still Princes, Barons, and Archbishops to keep happy!

Expect to meet other splats more often than the usual VtM chronicle. Ecological destruction will be a huge theme, so expect to meet a good share of werewolves (even if all you do is run away from them!). Other splats TBD. Playing as another splat? Let's talk about it, but right now I'd much rather open a parallel W20 or M20 game than allow a crossover-party in this V20 game.

I think that covers everything. Let me know what kind of character you'd like to play in this setting! Please feel free to ask questions. Happy gaming, everyone!

So use V20 for the system but keep the V5 metaplot changes? If not, what other stuff from V5/W5 are you planning on using?

I'm blind, sorry. So what other changes apart from Beckoning do you want to incorporate? And why Beckoning specifically?

By homebrew do you mean the Florida setting or the altered Gehenna metaplot?

My advice would be to maybe narrow down focus a bit and clarify the setting a bit. The "you can be anything" thing can quickly devolve into an utter chaos, especially if different people want to play different Clans, Sects, factions etc.

Also,

If the eco-theme is prevalent, why not just run Werewolf? Maybe sprinkle some Fera/Breeds into it for added relevance. There were some big snake epidemic in Florida, right? Then why not add Nagah or Mokole?

Hi! I’ve been looking to give VtM/WoD a try, and I’d be very happy to join your game, if you’ll have me and if your game is open to beginners! I have a kind of vague idea for a mild-mannered, slightly socially awkward zoologist turned Gangrel that I think would fit well with the ecological/environmental themes you have in mind, but I’m pretty flexible and could come up with something else if needed. I think I’d be more inclined toward playing Camarilla than Sabbat. I’m very much a beginner with Vampire so I’m not too familiar with most of the metaplot stuff, I’m afraid.

Sorry for the delay. Let me clarify some things that I should have at the top of the thread.

I chose the Beckoning specifically because I want to explore the sociological effects that is has for the Neonates and Ancilla more than the actual prophetic nature of it. There is a certain power fantasy in an accelerationist prophecy that actually comes true, and I imagine that accelerationist Anarchs would feel vindicated by this. I look forward to depicting the reactionary power-grabs in the midst of the new vacuum. Here I want to tie the game to real-world accelerationism and a society reconstructing itself after violent revolution.

Besides the Beckoning, I want the Second Inquisition to keep the players on-edge since they have to try to preserve the quickly unraveling Masquerade. And there's no telling what the higher-ups of the Camarilla will do to preserve it.

By homebrew, I mean to say that I could not find very many sources for my local area of South Florida, so I looked outside my window and homebrewed most of it while using the Miami references from the clan novels.

I'm not really looking to run a kitchen sink right now. The reason I'm being so open and inclusive right now is just to gauge what people would like to play so I can narrow down the scope when I start working on a recruitment thread. I only mention cross-splatting to gauge interest in werewolf or mage, but I might consider a crossover if a player has a really good reason for it.

I should rephrase the main theme of this campaign. It is going to focus on the destruction of Florida's ecology, but from a standpoint that I think concerns vampires specifically. I have been advised against bringing up real-world politics in a public thread, but it will have many more themes that are best explored with vampires. I can elaborate more in a PM or in the private game.

@oopsylon, I am open to beginners and running a beginner game! I love that concept for this game, and Camarilla games are what I have the most experience with. You don't have to know most or any of the metaplot, it will just be there in the background for the people who want to engage with it.

Thanks for explaining. While I really like the idea of a eco-themed Vampire chronicle, the majority of the V5 metaplot changes I find really hard to engage with, so I'll sit this one out.

I do have one suggestion though - bring along the Ahrimanes. They'd be a good fit for eco theme and can add the spiritual dimension to a Vampire game without involving Lupines/Garou. Lhiannan or Carna's Tremere can be another nice addition.

I'd be interested in playing if there's space for another player.

I would be interested in this. I could see myself playing a girl-next-door sort of paralegal who works for an environmental firm and is embraced by a Malkavian.

I would like to try, I’ve started a few games but never gotten far in without it falling apart.

Thanks for the tip! I've read a bit about them and they definitely interest me, especially the fae potential in the Lhiannan.

Thanks everyone for your interest! I will leave this thread open for a little while longer, but I will also be working on a recruitment thread where you can read about a clearer vision of the game and make a formal application. Based on the responses so far, I'm picturing a classic Camarilla game with fresh, beginner vampires. I'd like to ask @Kier01, @Emberskyes, and @PbPgameOn: what interests you about what I've described so far, and what kind of character would you like to play in this game?

Hi DragonDweller! We've talked a lot IRL about making South Florida a setting for WoD games so I'm excited to see you get the ball rolling!

I typically only play historical settings in VtM (this is just personal taste, I think I connect with the modern nights less), but I think I am interested in exploring this setting. My concept is a Filipina nurse turned Tzimisce, who immigrated to South Florida and feeds on patients in hospitals or nursing homes.

Initially I wanted to turn stereotypes about Asian women on their head, where a woman who is stereotyped as submissive and obedient is instead evil and sadistic, but I might want to explore a more human side to her. I also imagined her as Sabbat but she can also be more Camarilla.
