Trial by Fire

The Stormkeepers
A majestic and forbidding sight for a hundred miles, these massive peaks are snow-capped year-round, and house the endless mines and tunnels of stout peoples.

This area has been largely unaffected by the Bloodwing War, too remote and too rugged to be invaded, fought over, or threatened by usurpers... a timeless realm of solid stone and unyielding cold...and yet a familiar phrase passes among the people - "For the Crown"

You find yourself in Rivergate, just below the Stormkeepers. It’s a typical afternoon. All of you are walking down a Rivergate alleyway, hoping for cold ales and tall tales for the night. Your breath comes out in puffs of clouds as you conversate in a jovial jaunt to The Frothy Mare.
OOC:
Please describe your character and something the others would know about you. Illustrations are ok. I will post again Monday evening Central Standard Time, I'm in Texas, or Tuesday early.

A stout, rotund dwarf walks beside his companions, shoulder to hip, his bulbous nose pink from the cold. He pulls his fur-lined cloak closer as he walks, his brass-capped staff clinking along the cobble in the alley. Despite the chill, Jormund's smile peeks out from under his golden brown beard. Occasionally, his hand goes to the red crystal suspended by chain around his neck, hidden under his robe.

"Lovely weather we're having." He says, followed by a hearty chuckle. It wasn't the first time his friends had heard him say this, and it wouldn't be the last. It became something if an incantation.

How is he able to stay so jolly all the time? That's very simple: he's always thinking about magic, treasure, or (best of all) magical treasure. Despite the lean times, he tells his friends that good luck is just around the corner. It has to be, he thinks, clutching at the red crystal once more.

"Yes, it sure is." The young witch responds in her usual terse way while huddling in her cloak to keep the chill at bay.

She stands not that much taller than her dwarven companion. Gretel never said how old she actually was, or shared much of anything about herself at all really. She was obviously wise beyond her years, had a knack for all things magical and was driven by curiosity and ambition. All else she left up to speculation, never confirming or denying anything, just answering with vague remarks and an enigmatic smirk.

Gretel was originally only supposed to help sort out some magical artifacts the guild had dug up, but that curious gem Jormund was carrying caught her interest and she just stuck around. The dwarf and her got along well despite their rather different personalities. A shared interest in magical trinkets connecting them.

Her reputation within the guild is the topic of many a debate. Some calling her a freeloader who doesn't do any work, while others argue that her talents are worth keeping around. Both sides make a valid point and Gretel herself has never commented on the matter. So far she has not been kicked out though.

Filbur was not as joyful as the others. In fact he rarely experienced joy. His bunions, crooked back and chronic pneumonia made sure of that. But the former rat catcher soldiered on none the less. Finding the prophetic runes behind the wall of a rat-infested basement had given him a new look on life. He had a purpose.

"Ain't seen such decent wea'her in a while. Must mean sum'n bad 's about to 'appen." He replied drearily.

'Something bad is about to happen' was basically always Filbur's mood. His companions had had to learn to ignore it and, though he didn't like to be ignored, it comforted him that his paranoia didn't rub off all too much.

Fudge, the ferret sitting on his shoulder, squeaked excitedly and snapped at a passing moth before munching on it. He gave her a pat as he coughed loudly and spat on the cobbles.

Jormunc, Gretel, Filbur, posted. Waiting for Merik, I will move forward on Monday evening.
Apr 14, 2026 3:01 am
Towering above his companions, like a mountain amidst shrubs, Merik grunts and pats the gigantic warhammer by his side, "And as always Filbur, there's nothing to worry about."

Probably. The owner of The Frothy Mare hadn't exactly kicked him out after that last little scuffle Merik started (He was able to smooth things over by offering to train the owner's son in some basic swordplay), but he was certain he was still on the man's sh*t list. He just wanted to grab some ales, play some games of chance, and maybe, just maybe find a way to pilfer that red crystal Jormund liked to hide. Not because he disliked the dwarf, far from it. He just liked the jingle of a full coin purse better.

Suddenly, right in your path, a wooden door collapses into the street in a plume of smoke and embers! An old woman emerges in a panic. ‘The children are trapped! Help!’ She collapses from the smoke and heat. No one else is around to help, what will you do?
Apr 14, 2026 10:24 pm
A concerned look on his face, "You heard the lady, kids need saving!" Merik exclaims as he heads off toward the door. No way was he going to let some kids burn to death. And if it inadvertently makes them heroes and gets a few extra coins in his purse, why, even Filbur can't complain about that.
Apr 15, 2026 12:33 am
"Blazes, a conflagration!" Jormund helps the old lady away from the fire. "Quickly now, no time to lose! I'll raise the alarm and then join the search. Go!" He says, before taking off down the alley towards a more populated thoroughfare. "Fire! Fire!" He yells, pointing back towards the smoke.
Apr 15, 2026 7:05 am
Filbur sighs and mutters under his breath. "I knew this wea'her was too good." Never the less he lets Fudge jump down "Stay 'ere.", ties his dirty bandana across his nose to protect from the smoke and heads into the house. "I'll take the second floor." He calls out to Merik as he goes up the stairs.

Gretel quietly observes everyone rushing about. Either entering the house or fetching some help. With a shrug she approaches the old woman and checks up on her.
"Hey there lady. Are you alright?" She asks in a dry tone.
Apr 16, 2026 3:11 am
The old lady looks up at Gretel. She is an aged Halfling, bright blue eyes, white hair in a braid, with wrinkles that bespeak wisdom. "I tried to stop it, but it was just too much and I was trapped! Out the door or burn. My lungs are still filled with smoke...cough, cough, cough."

The rest of you quickly find the 3 children, the old lady assures you that there were only three as Jormund returns after sounding the alarm. He tells you that men are coming with buckets.

All of you have made progress to stop the flames, and the children are safely in the alleyway, shielded from the smoke and fire.

Then a human-shaped mass of flames leaps forth, challenging all of you with aggressive bursts of heat!

After saving the kids, Filbur needs a minute to cough up the soot that was stuck in his throat when suddenly a radiant heat makes him look up. Knowing one of his companions likes to mess around with fire, he asks "Jormund, is this your doing?".

Unsure of the intentions of the strange shape, he grabs his dagger and chooses to assess the situation before acting.

From what I understand it's a kind of initiative you can pick. Every round goes from phase 1 to 5. I don't think there's really any difference between them in terms of how they are handled. But every creature will be limited to which phase they can act on. So if you are in a phase before the enemy's phase you will always act before it regardless of your initiative roll and vice versa. Some creatures can act in more than one phase.

As a healer, for example, you can choose to go later so you can heal people who got hurt. A tank can go in phase 1 to get in front of everyone. But it's no guarantee you'll be before or after the monster.

Jormund huffs, having rushed back to the scene. "The bucket brigade are on their...Merlin's beard!" Upon seeing the strange creature wreathed in flame, he readies himself to cast an incantation if need be. It's high time I learn that 'douse' spell, he thinks. His red crystal glows, as if in agreement.

Fudge quickly runs up Filbur's leg and hides in his jacket.

Filbur knows he's not the best fighter even on a good day. And looking at the flaming creature he doesn't really want to get too close. So he runs towards the villagers with buckets of water to take one that he'll be able to use later.

@umbraldragon I don't think we're supposed to choose a phase every round. If I understand the rulebook correctly we stick to the chosen phase for a full combat. (Of course this is at the GM's discretion :) )

If we're sticking to the phases from last round, I believe it's Filbur's turn since the enemy is stunned again on phase 2.
If not, feel free to disregard this post or move it to where it fits.
Filbur watches his companions pummel the creature with might and magic alike. This is exactly why he decided to stick with them in the first place. The people were reliable and that's something Filbur could use in his life. It almost brings a smile to his always surly face.

He takes a quick second to look around and see if any other enemies have shown up. Since this one seems to just be standing there, he's starting to worry that it might be a distraction for something bigger.

He decides to focus on the threat in sight and swings his now empty bucket at the creature, hoping it's damp enough from the water that was in it before to not catch fire.

The house is need of repair, but the woman and her children have been embraced by her nearby neighbors who have offered to take her and her family in until the repairs are done.

Apr 28, 2026 6:38 am

"Hold a moment, friends," Jormund says to Merrik and Filbur. He walks over to the old woman and clears his throat to announce his presence. "Excuse me, my lady, but could you tell me how this happened?" He motions back to the house, the blaze being beaten back by a bucket line.
Apr 28, 2026 3:56 pm
"Yes." Gretel agrees with Jormund. "You will have your fill soon enough. Let us find out what happened here first."

"Also, don't go running off until we have claimed our reward." She adds in a whisper and a sly smile on her face.
May 2, 2026 12:10 am
The Lady looks at Jormund. "I don't really know. I just jumped out of the cookfire," she says

Another man with an empty bucket looks at Jormund. "Excuse me sir Dwarf, but there have been rumors of something going on in the mines. Maybe that has something to do with this," he says.

Another man joins him, as smoke from the dying ashes billows in the breeze. "Don't believe everything you hear sir Dwarf. This one's always ramblin' on about con speersy theerys. I'd head down to the Frothy Mare and grab a mug if I were you," he says as he drags his companion with a grin. They both seem like they've known each other for a long time.
An older man, sitting by and watching the entire fiasco says, "Aye, he has the right of it," as he leans on a short staff that's shoulder heighth. "Heroes today, forgotten tomorrow. Rivergate keeps moving, just like the river itself." He strokes his beard and grins. He takes a pull from the pipe in hand and blows smoke rings into the sky.

Jormund takes in everyone's statements and strokes his beard, staring at the source of the sudden fire. "Hmm. Indeed..." He wonders if he should come back later to take a peek, just in case. His curiosities and suspicions get the better of him often. After a moment's indecision he sighs.

"Well, good lady, these fine folks will take care of you. You're in good hands," he says, then joins his friends.

On a street corner as you wend your way through the streets of Rivergate, two zealots stand next to a white washed sign that reads:
Verinax Comes!
Below the text is a painting of a white dragon.

One of the zealots squats and bangs a flat drum, at the edge of the building; and, the other has a pamphlet, which most are reluctant to accept. He shouts, "Varinax the White Dragon will come soon! And all who do not bow to her will be doomed to face her wrath!" He goes on and on as you pass by.

You see the sign just a half a block away, "The Frothy Mare".
May 3, 2026 10:33 am
Filbur takes the pamphlet. You never know when a piece of paper might come in handy later. "Hmm... Varinax huh? Oi'll keep an eye out for 'er." He says to one of the zealots before moving on.
May 4, 2026 8:42 pm
Jormund pushes on past the zealots and cuffs dismissively. "Come now, come now," he says, "no more distractions." Inwardly, his curiosity needles him to bother Filbur for that pamphlet. Perhaps later, he thinks.

Before you can order, you see a young lad pointing you out to an older gentleman. The man hands the boy a few farthings and heads over to your table. "You must be the ones who vanquished that Flame Kin. I have something for you," he says and tosses a few small pouches onto the table, one for each of you. You hear the disctinct sound of coin within.
"In there is enough to cover your meal and a night here at the Mare. My thanks to you for handling that creature. They've been a nuisance lately so there is reward for your efforts. I'm with the Mining Regent, so if you'll forgive me, I've a damnable thirst for an Ale. And an eye for Svenka over there," he winks and heads over to a plump blonde woman with a cherubic smile. The crowd parts and closes like a curtain as he leaves for "fairer pastures."

Within each pouch is 30 silvers
May 6, 2026 3:39 am
Merik grins wide at seeing the coins, "See, word has spread already. Perhaps we can get more coin by destroying more of these flamekin. But in the meantime, let's be merry!" the big man says with a laugh, giving Filbur and Jormund a hearty pat on the back. He waves down a barmaid to order.
OOC:
I'll grab a miner's skillet and rivergate dark, 5 silver total 25 left.
May 6, 2026 9:55 am
Filbur is not used to having a sizable amount of money and thus quickly overspends, treating himself to a Boar‑Haunch and two Dragonbite Whiskey's which he downs in record time. He lets Fudge enjoy some of the boar too.
OOC:
That's 11 silver used on food and drink.
"I can get used to more o' that!" He exclaims satisfied. " 'Oo is that geezer?" He asks one of the other patrons pointing to the man who gave them the money.
May 6, 2026 10:56 pm
"I'll drink to that, lad." Jormund chuckles, placing an order for food and drink with the barmaid. The hearty stew and crisp, citrusy brew do much to alleviate the unease he had been feeling following the encounter with the flamekin. "The reward for slaying these miscreants isn't half-bad. They must be quite a nuisance for it to be as generous as it is; food and drink and then some!" He leans forward and steeples his fingers, a conspiratorial gleam in his eyes. "I wonder what the purse would be if we found the source of the problem."
OOC:

Huggins's Stew (3 silver)
Witchlight Wheat (2 silver)
Silver remaining (25 silver)
May 7, 2026 1:26 am
The man looks at Filbur.
"That's Wheat. He's one of those what works at the Mining Regent - a coalition. They make sure the mines flow and business gets done. They run Rivergate lad, don't be daft," he says and orders another round for your table.
May 7, 2026 2:19 am
The Mare starts to get boisterous after a few hours and there is much singing and raucous laughter. A game of Thieves and Wizards has already started a few tables down. You hear the dice rolling and more than few "Oh!"s and "Ah"s. The barmaids are slightly scandalous, but do not tolerate any "hands on" attention. Your meal is exceptional and twilight is near when you notice you have been drinking more than you should have, but the rounds keep coming at no charge to you.
OOC:
A Resist roll is required in order to maintain your inebriated state. 1d20 vs skill level.
Success: You remain lucid for the next 30 minutes and then you will need to roll again.
Fail or No Skill: You decide you have had enough and need to make it to a bed before you pass out.

Also you are more than welcome to try your luck at Thieves and Wizards, or make a Gambling roll either one works.
May 7, 2026 9:03 am
OOC:
Filbur has no drinking related skill
"Soun's like we could 'ave a chat with that geezer about wha's goin on in dem mines." Filbur comments before downing another drink. "But i''ll be fur tomorroh." His speech is getting worse by the minute. "Oi think oi'll go 'ave a li'le kip. Cmon, Fudgy."

He gets up and stumbles his way to the bar to get a room. "Gimme one o' dem ones upstairs."
May 8, 2026 12:47 am
OOC:
Jormund likewise has no resist skill.
Jormund normally paces himself much better, but he gets into his cups quickly today. He wobbles onto his feet, hiccuping, stumbling after Filbur & Fudge, and likewise buys a room for the night.

Merik, what will you do next?
May 8, 2026 8:52 pm
OOC:
sorry for the delay, wasn't sure how skills worked and just looked at the rule book. I used the online character app to create Merik, and it never mentioned needing to increase your skills with points, so essentially I need to recreate him, only this time invest points to raise skills. I hope to have that done by tonight.
May 8, 2026 10:43 pm
OOC:
I thought it was a choice to have all of them at 3 😅
Hehe.
May 9, 2026 4:03 am
Merik can usually hold his liquor, but maybe the encounter with the flame kin shook him more then he'd like to admit. He was hoping to play a game of Thieves and Wizards, but the drinks quickly usher him to bed instead.
OOC:
wow, this is way different. Pretty much need to gut everything to get some decent/subpar values. How did everyone else do it, just focus on 1-2 of them? And if you have a value of 0 in a skill, do you just always fail?

You find yourselves unacustomed to the potency of the local brews and soon retire for the evening. The next day you are awakened by a knock on your door. Bleary eyed, you manage to see a pair shadowy feet leaving and just below the crack you see a slip of paper.

It's a note:

Your presence is requested for a luncheon at the behest of Lady Walcrest.
Dress is semi-formal and puncuality is of utmost importance.

There is a wax seal of a W with lavish flourish motif at the bottom.

You look out the window. It is another slate gray sky and hard to tell what time of day it is, but a cathedral bell tolls in the distance and you hear 10 bells. You consider for a moment how much time it will take to find the Walcrest mansion and the right clothes to make an impression. You have about two hours to get ready to meet with the Lady Walcrest...
May 19, 2026 12:29 pm
Fudge is quick to bring Filbur the note. "Thanks boy." He groans as he gets up out of bed. Even though it was one of the best nights he's had in a while, his body always hurts in the morning.

Sitting upright, he opens and reads the note. It doesn't take long before he lets out a bellow of a laugh. "This mus'a been delivered to the wrong fella." He says, not believing any 'Lady' would invite him to a luncheon. He looks at the few coins left in his purse. "Coul'n't even look the par' if oi wan'ed to."

He heads down stairs to get some breakfast while he waits for the others to wake.
OOC:
I believe I have 9 silver left. I'll spend 2 more on a good breakfast.
May 19, 2026 10:43 pm
Jormund is seated downstairs, puffing at a pipe and massaging his temples, when he espies Filbur descending the stairs. "Ah, Filbur," he calls, "I've saved you and Fudge a seat. I'd ask what we did last night, but by the state of you I suspect you don't know either." Jormund laughs and then grimaces, cut short by another stab of headache.

"Mountain's bones, I've not been hungover since I was an apprentice. I suppose you've got one of these as well." Jormund holds up a letter that he found slipped under his door. As the barmaid passes, Jormund flags her down and orders breakfast. At least he isn't nauseous.
OOC:
I also spend 2 silver on a good breakfast. 23 silver remaining.

@TheGenerator Wouldn't you have had 19 silver?

Oh riiiiiight. It looks like rooms have two beds, so perhaps we shared a room? Unless the extra bed was for Fudge. 😄
May 20, 2026 10:06 pm
OOC:
Sharing is probably smart. If Jormund suggested it, Filbur would agree. Saves us both 5s.
May 21, 2026 1:50 pm
Filbur gladly sits down with Jormund. "Thanks for the seat!" He says surprisingly cheerfully.
"Hungover eh!" He grins and lightly stomps Jormund with an elbow. "Oi'm used to it. Actualy, moi 'ead ache is much be'er than usual." This might have been the result of drinking better quality booze.

"Yeah, Oi got one o' dem le'ers too." He answers Jormund's question. "Figure some sod dropped it on the wrong doorstep. Youz thinkin' it's the real deal?"

He bites off a big chunk of bread and cheese and start chewing.
May 21, 2026 4:25 pm
Jormund tucks into breakfast as they converse, speaking in between mouthfuls of food. "Perhaps. We're not the sort to be invited to luncheons by respectable ladies, after all," He chuckles.

"I find myself curious, however. Mayhaps an opportunity has fallen into our lap. Couldn't hurt to attend, could it? After all, we have invitations." Jormund smiles impishly and waves the letter once more.

"Semi-formal attire is the one hiccup. I might be able to get by with scholar's robes, but I'd rather not chance it, and we seen to be in a bit of a schedule. What do you say? Shall we go shopping?" He grins.
May 22, 2026 1:45 am
A courier arrives at the Frothy Mare. He has a parcel for "a pair of adventurers - namely one Filbur and Jormund" he says and drops the parcel on the bar for Barmm the Tavern Proprieter and general barkeep. He looks at you and says, "Well, well. Looks like you've drawn the attention of Lady Walcrest. I can tell by the seal on the package. These aren't the sort of parcels dropped off by Workle's Wares or Katy the Fence. Aye, this bodes well for ye both. For the Crown mates!"

The customers only hear "For the Crown" and they lift their flagons, "For the Crown!" and take big swigs of ale.
May 22, 2026 6:59 am
"Well, Oi always like a par'y." Filbur chuckles, finishing his breakfast and giving the last bit of cheese to Fudge. "But Oi don' do well in dem tights, if that's wut yer suggestin'."

He's about to ask if Jormund even knows where to find such a shop when the parcel arrives. "Aye, tha's us!" Holding the package, he looks around. "Le's open this one in the room, eh?" He says to Jormund.

Jormund quickly finishes his plate and rubs his temple once more. "Aye. No time like the present," he says as he swivels out of the chair and trundles back upstairs on Filbur's heels.

"Well bugger me silly!" Filbur says seeing the fancy clothing. "Oi think yer right. She does want us to go, eh?"

He looks about nervously, like he's scared to say what he's about to say. "Oi think Oi'll need to take a .... Bath.
OOC:
If it's possible, Filbur will order a tub and some warm water for the room.
After Filbur cleans up best he can, he puts on the clothes they got and asks Jormund "'Ow do Oi look?"
He's ready to head to the party.

Jormund is likewise tarted up as Filbur emerges. He tucks his red crystal underneath his tunic as he turns to regard the man's new threads. "Quite striking, sir Filbur," he chuckles. "We make quite the pair, do we not? Come - if we dally any longer I fear we shall incur the wrath of the gentry."

With that, Jormund grabs his trusty staff and sets out to meet the mysterious Lady Walcrest.

Posting later today.

"Mighty snazzy, Jormund!" Filbur compliments. "As me num would say, yur lookin' like a peacock wi' extra fea'ers."

He straightens his bow tie one last time and leaves the room. "Le's get a move on. We dun wanna arrive when all the grub is alrea'y gone." Fudge is snugly tucked into his front pocket like a pocket square.
May 27, 2026 1:36 am
You arrive at a very luxurious house. The doorman, with white gloves, looks at you as if you were somthing he scraped off his foot, however, he nods and says, "I assume you are here to see Lady Walcrest. I hope the tailor was able to follow my explicit directions. Your fit should be near perfect - including your footwear. Please, come in and follow me."

He leads you down corridor after corridor, giving you information about the history of the "edifice", which of course is an "abridged version" since he explains he doesn't have time to dally. He finally brings you into a dining room with a long table. One side is set for two with chairs faicing each other. Two more servants, also wearing white gloves, pull your chairs as you are seated. "My name is Neb-Kadjer, you may call me Mr. Neb. Today's fair is roasted pheasant with plum jelly sauce and black rice. This first dish is an amuse bouche to tease your appetites. Hummingbird tongue sauted in honey and amaretto mead. Please enjoy," says the doorman as two older women serve you small dishes with a silver forks slightly longer than your middle finger.

This goes on for 5 courses, the fifth being the pheasant and black rice. All of the food and drinks are decadent and made to perfection. Once you are done, you are asked to meet with Lady Walcrest on the terrace. You are taken to a large room with an open deck that leads out over a manicured garden. Below you can see a maze made of shrubbery and several fountains and pools linked by narrow waterways and a stone path connected with bridges over the canals. Lady Walcrest sits in a hooded chair drinking tea as she gazes out over the garden. She see you and smiles. She is an older woman of about 35 with blond hair, sky blue eyes and the look of aristocracy about her. She is very much a woman of grand beauty and elegance.
"Hello my dears, I hope the luncheon was adequate. I have had a very stressful morning, but all is well. Please sit my dears. I have a proposal, but please tell me how you vanquished the fire demon. Neb-Kadjer tells me you are all the talk in lower Rivergate," she says with a smile that would make most men weak in the knees. She holds out her hand in greeting.
May 27, 2026 3:47 pm
Filbur is instantly smitten by the lady's beauty. "Milady." He says with a likely uncultured bow. "Oi'd 'ave to say, compared to yer beau'y, the food was wre'ched."

He grabs a chair and sits down as if he were at the local pub. "Well, le' me tell you, it wasn't no small feat that." He continues. "Of course, we figured out righ' quick that the thing di'n't like wa'er. So we got some buckets you see."

Jormund looks around at the finery and the obviously expensive and masterfully prepared food and can't help but wonder what this kind of wealth would do to his life. How many expeditions would wealth like this fund? How much research materials would flow into his laboratory like fine wine?

And then there was the lady herself - beauty beyond compare, as fine as cut gems and as alluring as secret magics. Jormund shook the gold coins from his eyes as Filbur began to regale.

"A-ah, yes! With quick thinking on behalf of my friends and I we were able to quickly dispatch the fire demon. While it was immobilized by it's aversion to water, we struck it down before it could spread the blaze further. All in a day's work, I dare say." Jormund grins and chuckles politely.
May 29, 2026 2:02 am
It's as if she were living vicariously through the imagery and the story as you tell it. "How thrilling! Oh my. Such bravery! Bravo! Bravo!" she gathers herself though she is still smiles, it seems to disapear almost as soon as it appeared. She sits up, with her back straight and her eyes upon yours.

"There is a reason I've requested your presence. I have a task for you if you choose to take it. In return, you will each recieve an emeral coin upon completion. The task is to escort my niece, Agni, is to be transported by wagon to the high crags of Storm Point Asylum. The poor girl’s mind is eroding by the day. She is to be under constant care, kept in irons, and delivered to the high alchemist of Storm Point: the honorable Erasmus Fane. Once she is securely housed, with arranged accommodations, payment will be made upon your swift return. I will also offer a retainer, a fighting man named Harl, as help. What say you brave fellows? You have a few moments to confer," she rises and says, "I will be in the study. I await your decision within the next few moments." She leaves you alone on the terrace, overlooking the garden.

Filbur listens intently to the request of lady Walcrest. After she leaves, he turns to Jormund. "Well 'oo'da thunk it?! The lady's go' a mad niece. And tha's a lo' o coin she's offerin'." He says excitedly. "Looks like this is a bloo'y nice gig if yur askin' me."

"Where is Storm Point anyway?" He asks Jormund, whom he expects to know these kind of things.

He thinks a moment and adds. "It does mean we'll be leavin' the fellas in the mines to deal with dem fire blokes demselves." He shrugs. "Can't be in two places a' once, eh?"
May 30, 2026 1:11 am
OOC:
You're getting better at that accent. Nice :)
May 30, 2026 2:27 am
Jormund's eyes glint at the mention of such a generous ransom. He turns to confer with Filbur after the lady leaves. "A kingly reward for a simple escort assignment! It would seem that our luck is turning up," he says, shaking the man's shoulder and laughing perhaps a little louder than would be considered proper.

His joviality dims at the mention of the miner's plight. "Aye, that is a pickle," he says, stroking his beard. He mumbles to himself, weighing the literal weight of an emerald coin against his communal conscience. "I'm of no mind to abandon those miners when I can render aid, but I must admit that coin has been light recently, and if I am to improve my arcane efficacy I shall need research materials. Yes, that's it - we are simply raising funds to better equip ourselves for the task."

Jormund smiles, happy to have navigated his moral quandary to the delight of his greed. "What say you?"
May 30, 2026 2:05 pm
"Right, mate. Tha' makes to'al sense." Filbur agrees. "Oi mean, the be'er our gear and skill, the be'er we'll be able to clean up tha' mine, eh?" He half smiles / half grins. "Le's tell the lady we'll do it."

Filbur fills his cup with some of the wine that's on a small table close to him and drinks it up eagerly. Might as well take advantage now that he's here. He's sure nobody will miss a bit of drink.

"No way I'm doin' it in these clothes though..." He adds, pulling on the uncomfortable shirt he's wearing that seems to make the back of his neck itch.
May 30, 2026 3:38 pm
"Very well then," says the Lady, "an emerald coin when you return from escorting my niece, Agni, to the Storm Point Asylum and into the hands of the high alchemist, the honorable Erasmus Fane. I will send one of my men with you, Harl - a fighting man of good repute, and my Houseman shall see you off in the morning at daybreak," and extends her hand to shake yours. The handshake is a binding deal in Rivergate, as long as there is a witness. You realize this as you look at the Houseman, he is watching every detail.
Jun 1, 2026 6:56 pm
After the lady leaves again, Filbur speaks to the servant. "Righ', Mr. Neb. We'll some supplies fur our journey, then." He tells him. "Oi'm guessin' you could 'andle that fur us? Jormund 'ere is gonna make you a list, eh." He says with a jovial smile.
Jun 2, 2026 1:55 am
Jormund is distracted by the far-off gleam of an emerald coin in his future as Filbur nominates him. "Hm? Oh, yes! A list. Such a list I shall make. Come, come, no time like the present!" The excitable dwarf pushes his party out of the door to prepare and thumbs the red crystal under his tunic. It shines, catching a light that isn't there. "Yes," he mutters, "off to adventure!"
