Blackscale Lagoon: Part I Thieves in the Night: A Bloody Welcome

A Bloody Welcome

You and your companions have been slogging through Blackscale Valley, which most people call Blackscale Lagoon because the area contains so many swamps. The valley is a marshy fen ringed by jagged cliffs that leave it largely isolated from the rest of the world. Drawn by rumors of abandoned dragon treasure, you have begun to question your decisions after a few days of wading through the insect-infested swamps and endless mud. The cobblestone road that led into Blackscale Valley has given way to a muddy, meandering pathway through the bog.

Through the fog and clouds of biting parasites that buzz about you can see the light of what could be lanterns or torches far in the distance. Eager to sleep on something other than a mattress of muck, you’ve redoubled your efforts to move forward in spite of the fact that the sun is swiftly setting. The constant din of chirping and buzzing insects suddenly falls silent in the penumbra of the night, leaving only the gentle ripple of standing water disturbed by your passage...

And a soft drink. Mole laughs teasing his friend.

He swallowed hard, his own saliva suddenly tasting like a poor substitute for the rich, malty draught he craved. The phantom taste of dark ale was so vivid it made his stomach growl in protest against the stale hardtack he’d eaten for breakfast.

Varos doesn't like the stench of this place one bit but he does like a good glass of honey mead. It is strange now being above water after having lived under it for a bit. Maybe a nice bowl of stew will help set him right.

OOC:
Please Roll for 1d6 for surprise, whoever is in the lead. On a 1 or 2 you are surprised!

OOC:
OH I forgot you have Benfor, he is a Ranger. He needs to make the roll, since he is surprised only on a 1.

OOC:
Who is Benfor. Are there 4 of us? Could we please have a character intro post from player before we do something else?
Here is my PC for the new player to be familiar to
Mole is dwarf (that's how humans call him as only dwarf could pronounce his real name). As a dwarf has darkvision of 60 feet and prefer to benefit of that. While equally good with bow and axe, prefer sneaking on enemy and shooting them before enemy had change to attack you (fighter/thief class). Has a rough sense of humor and likes dark ale and magic items.

Varos is a elven fighter/mu who can also sneak with the best of them but he hung up his thieves tools to focus more on logic and magic. He is very good fighting with his staff though and decent with a short bow. He like a good glass of honey mead to wind down with. He is very good at dealing with all sorts of people and his companions Mole and Biscuit are growing on him.

Biscuit. Halfling fighter. Good with a short sword and bow, but great with a quip. Lover of life and the ladies.

OOC:
Hey everyone! I'm playing Benford, A human ranger who lives in the swamp. Similar to Mole he prefers sneaking to direct confrontation. That also applies to his personality, as he'd probably prefer a good soak in the bog to deep conversation. Not that he minds a good drink now and again.
Apologies for the late introduction, I'm new to Pbp and am still getting the hang of it. Perhaps between sessions, Benford was brought in to the party as some kind of guide?

I don't know what the 2d6 dice roll is for.

Sleep
Duration: 4d4 turns
Range: 240’

A sleep spell causes a magical slumber to come upon creatures, excluding the undead.
The spell may target either:
1. A single creature with 4+1 Hit Dice (see Hit point modifiers in the Advanced Fantasy Referee’s Tome).

2. A total of 2d8 Hit Dice of creatures of 4 HD or lower each.

When targeting creatures of 4 HD or less, the following rules apply:

▶ Weakest first: Targets with the least HD are affected first.

▶ HD: Treat monsters with less than 1 HD as having 1 HD and monsters with a fixed hit point bonus as having the flat HD. (For example, a 3+2 HD monster would be treated as having 3 HD.)

▶ Excess: Rolled Hit Dice that are not sufficient to affect a creature are wasted.

Killing: Creatures enchanted by this spell are helpless and can be killed instantly with a bladed weapon.

Awakening: Slapping or wounding awakens an affected creature.

ok, I see - use the 2d8 rule. If you roll less, I'll take the 7 instead.

The Goblins rush towards you only to fall at your feet. All of them lie on the ground asleep! In the distance, you see a Lizardman in a gray skirt turn and flee!

"Well shall we dispose of these disgusting little buggers?"
