ClosedVampire: the Masquerade (V20)Private1 / dayQralloq
A sandbox political game featuring Camarilla characters in the Land of the Sun.

The gunshot echoed across the desert night, and with it, sudden turmoil. An impossible shot from rooftop to rootop across a half mile of night sky. The Prince of Phoenix was dead, and there was no clear successor. Was this a declaration of war from the Mexican Sabbat stronghold to the south, or a bold move from across the border in the Anarch Free States? In this chaotic time, who will rule the desert city and lead the defense? There is no clear successor, but plenty of kindred would kill for the position.

Phoenix, Arizona

Phoenix is a Camarilla city, through and through. But unlife isn't easy in the Valley of the Sun. With hordes of fanatical Sabbat across the border to the south, and unruly, uncontrolled Anarchs an equally short distance to the west in the Anarch Free States, there are plenty of enemies all around.

One might think that shared enemies would be the bond that unites the kindred of Phoenix together.

One might be wrong.

Pitch
Phoenix by Night will be a sandbox, political game. PCs will be expected to form a coterie, make alliances, investigate their enemies, and above all, withhold the Six Traditions.

System
Vampire: the Masquerade 20th Anniversary Edition (i.e., 4e; V20)

Adult Content or Controversial Themes
Yes, by the Inner Council yes. Murder, mayhem, violence, betrayal, VtM thrives in the dark corners where your fears lurk. That being said, we'll discuss in advance what is exposed to the hated daystar and what remains veiled in shadow.

Character Restrictions
Camarilla clans are just fine. Sabbat antitribu clans may be accepted. Obscure bloodlines will get the Dread Gaze except with exceptional backgrounds.

Game Duration and Post Frequency
Let's play for a year, and then discuss. Of course, if it doesn't work out, I just ask that you be honest and be free to leave.

Player Experience
I'd prefer players who understand the masquerade, and are willing to engage in the ask - this will be a sandbox game, not a railroad action adventure. Actual mastery of the rules is irrelevant compared to a willingness to engage in the story.

Player Application
I'd like two things from the prospective player: 1) a character concept, publicly shown but any saucy bits hidden in a note to me if you want; and 2) what you want from a game such as this.

I'll keep this open until Sunday, and then offer invitations then. I'm hoping for four players, maybe five. Three great ones will do.

Well, I'm here, interested (not much of a surprise).

For concepts I was mulling a few. Since we're focusing on Cammies, Anarch/Sabbat related fall off, leaving 3 that I think are the most interesting:
[ +- ] The FBI missing person specialist
The two other concepts follow a "cat in a bag" idea (Sire thought they were Embracing one thing, but boy were they wrong):

1) A Grandparent to All
reversia.ch sent a note to Qralloq
2) The American Dream
reversia.ch sent a note to Qralloq
Don't really care for Clans much, except for not being interested in ones that physically transform the person - Nosferatu, Samedi and to a lesser extent Kiasyd/Maeghar. Don't mind rolling for Clan/Bloodline. Thin-blood probably won't fit with these 3 characters, though I thought about "Time of Thin-Blood" inspired concepts utilizing the mechanics from that book, if you're interested in incorporating those. Fine with accepting any Clan (except the freaks) if you think that some NPC would make a good fit for any of the "Sire" roles.
As for what I want from the game, the biggest thing I could think of would be a personal story/journey. Some internal strife that culminates in a cathartic moment - an epiphany, a realization, an unseemly truth. Something emotionally intense for the character. Doesn't have to be its own storyline in game, can be just weaved in regular gameplay as their thoughts and feelings, processing the events that unfold in front of them. A good character arc - they start the chronicle in one state, change, transform and grow/degenerate as the things progress, ultimately becoming someone else, for better or worse.

Anyhow, this turned into a big sheet, so thanks for reading. Hope I'll get a spot and get to play some good VTM. Good evening. (walks away in LaCroix).

Hi! Definitely interested. My experience with VtM is rusty, but I used to do VtM Revised all the time, got briefly into V5, and just haven't come back around to V20 yet so this would be my first go at it.

Character concept: Embraced ghoul. A man a hair too young to have been drafted into WWII by the time the war ended, this character was already doing odd jobs some two degrees removed from his future Sire; small courier stuff at first but escalating over a few years to being a cleaner for jobs. It would be nearly a decade before he even existed in the same building as his Sire, and by then he was needed as pure fodder to throw up as a defense against his new Domitor's political rivals when things soured. He never was a strong fighter, but he was resourceful. Later he became more of a fixer, and then dabbled into tech by the 80's.

He was never his Sire's first choice, but he was a choice that his Sire hasn't regretted yet. Embraced some 15 years prior the start of the campaign, he is playing the slow game to unseat or otherwise rival his own Sire, more out of a twisted sense of making him proud than anything else.

Clan wise I'd probably adopt to Ventrue here, but not particularly married to anything; I'm almost always a "wait to see" type of player when it comes to picking character options like that.
I think what I'd like out of a game like this is a climbing-the-ladder type of story pitted against a wholly different temptation entirely (mortal love, rival faction attempting recruitment, etc., open to anything honestly). Especially since it's play-by-post, and I've already been a part of a lot of tables that never make it to endgame, it's a little preferrable to maybe be just a step or two shy of reaching said ladder-climbing goal at the start of the campaign rather than starting from Square 1.

Jason Regard was a well respected and rising nature photographer based in Phoenix Arizona. Considered one of the best, his work filled the pages of Arizona Highways- beautiful desert landscape photography where the key feature was always the Sun. Jason was the master of using sunlight and shadows to tell stories through the lens of his camera, and the world was beginning to notice.

Unfortunately, his sire noticed as well. Entranced by the beauty of his work, Torreador vampire in the Phoenix area Embracrd Jason, putting an abrupt halt to his career.

Now a Vampire, Jason has quite literally lost the light of the sun- the element of which he was the master, the defining quality of his work.

Now, he must find his way in a new society and find who he is without his work.

Always happy to indulge in the darker settings! I played VtM for many years in my university years and have been looking for a long-term game to continue in.

For my character I would propose Marcus Hale, a veteran of the Afghan war turned Brujah. Big on the classical soldier tropes, not so much on brains, but an all-round nice guy. As a kindred he is distinctive in that he still upholds the principles of protecting others, good and honest humans in particular. He's big on the kindred keeping their hunger in check and saving it for some scumbags who deserve it more. This do-goodery isn't making him much friends in some circles, but he doesn't give a fuck about said circles. Of course nice guys don't last in the world of the kindred, but don't tell him that..

He hung around in the Camarilla after the Brujah exodus as a nominal member, simply because he didn't want to leave home and the shooting range he owns. He's sympathetic to the Anarch cause to some degree however as he has no love or fondness for the ancient monsters who run the Camarilla. He just keeps that part on the down low to keep the peace.

I'm looking for personal horror, character development and flawed personas in my WoD characters. For the setting I'm hoping a chance at portraying the horror of the undead existence and their inherent evil (the curse of Caine) is a recurring theme.

I always keen for a VtM game! But I've both played and run my fair share so I'd like to put myself at the back of the queue. Will return with a pitch, but let's see how much enthusiasm comes this way from other members first!
Apr 2, 2026 9:50 am
Here's my pitch:

Nicole is a recently embraced, wide-eyed fledgling. She is known for her infectious bursts of energy, being a bit reckless, and being into wild parties and debauchers encounters then being dragged down by petty politics and jagged elders.

Delirium sent a note to Qralloq
For this game I would hope to include some elements of personal horror, and to explore the constant struggle to cling on to even the smallest sliver of humanity. All played out against the backdrop of vampire politics and ruthless power struggles that seems inescapable, despite your best intentions.

That's a V5 thing though, no? Are we including V5 metaplot changes in this? Lasombra switch, Sabbat wipeout, Second Inquisition..? @Qralloq

Great question. No, for this game the metaplot will ignore V5-eries such as Second Inquisition, Lasombra/Brujah defections, the death clan consolidation, rebranding of Setites, the Beckoning, etc.
Apr 2, 2026 3:50 pm
Well, I'll be honest - that's a relief. I'm all for moving the metaplot forward but the majority of V5 changes were just baffling to me. I'd be interested in other, non-canon changes, if you thought about maybe including/trying out some.
Apr 2, 2026 5:37 pm
Right, in that case Marcus is simply part of the younger rabble generation that is rebelling against the norms, while the clan is still in the Camarilla. The rest of my concept still works.

Seems like there's a bit less interest than I thought there'd be. Which might be because folks simply missed the ad? It'd be pretty unfortunate to miss a fairly rare VtM fare. In which case, a just-in-case emergency summon!

@valentine_teddies @Camilla @Kier01 @Neil @Crowjane @emsquared (currently afk, but maybe will make it?) @vicky_molokh @eldarin @DragonDweller62 @Kingo @virtualbasement @The_Librarian @witchdoctor @Gearspark

And my shovelheads @rabble @Redcroc @JarOfPickles in case you guys were interested.

That's everyone I could think of. If you already saw this and decided to pass on it - sorry to bother you and I hope you have a great day!

Thanks for the invite ping. I have V3 and V5 but not V20, its not something I ever picked up because I when it was released I was without a vtm crew.
I'd rather not buy a new book so I am going to pass. thank you though!
Apr 3, 2026 11:34 am
Revised (V3) and V20 are essentially the same system with few minor adjustments. So if it's version jitters that mainly stops you - don't worry! No need to be buying V20 core, Revised will do! And if there are questions, I'm sure everyone be glad to help.
Apr 3, 2026 12:12 pm
You usually cannot even find the differences between Revised and 20th Anniversary editions-- there are a few changes throughout but mostly the company that released them just collected a ton of material from Revised and put out the big prestige editions with new art.

Lack of "Dodge" Talent is the only change I can remember of the top of my head. So no worries @The_Librarian

Apologies if I gave the impression of having more interest. I did mention that my interest in VtM is rather limited nowadays, and answered some of the preferences purely hypothetically. Sorry I can't fill your shovelranks.

Sandbox political game seems perfect to play someone inspired on Remy Danton so let's go into the application:
[ +- ] 1. Character concept
[ +- ] 2. What you want from a game such as this

Don't think this particular game calls to me, but I do appreciate the consideration!

I’m definitely interested, but just found out about this an hour ago. I’m leaning toward Gangrel or Nosferatu, two clans I haven’t played yet. I’ll do some brainstorming and come up with a concept/background today.

…..it seems like there is a lot of interested players, so I will wait in the shadows and come out if needed.
