Having arranged for lodgings at the Inn of Eternal Rest as Olpert recommended, the six fledgling adventurers - Sora the dwarven brewer, Kazzak the dwarven miner, Dell the human investigator, Berthold the human-seeming knight, Antonius the human watchman, and Amnestria the elven librarian, gather back at the site of the Dungeon Busters guild hall. Berthold bids Guilbert, Olyena, and Reynald to await his return at the Inn.

It is late in the afternoon of the twenty-sixth day since the first Dungeon Busters arrived in the town of Hochoch.

"We've got a good team promoting us here," Olpert Razorsson says, nodding at a couple of the Dungeon Busters supervising the last of the day's construction behind him, a stiff-looking human and a jovial, very loud dwarf. "So I don't think we need any more help here. No, I think the best thing for you isn't promotion," he looks at each of you in turn, "but rather to test your mettle in a safe, controlled environment. I think you should join one of our teams for some on-the-job training, so you can learn and also so we can evaluate your strengths." He smiles, the scars making his face crinkle in unexpected and somewhat unsettling ways. It's clear that he has survived many vicious combats. "We've had some bandit activity in the area, but the team that is investigating that has left days ago and I couldn't tell you which way to go to find them. But yesterday morning some of our most experienced, veteran team members took some of the new recruits with them to follow up on the developing situation in Orlane. This morning I sent a new recruit to join them. We'll get you briefed, rested, and prepped, and then you can set out first thing tomorrow morning. With her having so much of a head start, you won't catch up to her until you get to Orlane, but when you do, the veterans can be your supervisors and guide you through conducting a typical Dungeon Busters operation."

Dell listens to Olpert then steps up."My good sir have you seen my brother Chase? I have come looking for him with some grave news from our homeland. I met Cecily Raptor in Gorna and she mistook me for Chase and told me he joined up with the Dungeon Busters. Do you have any news on his where abouts?"
Mar 15, 2026 3:29 pm
"And I seek news of Aanbo, a dwarf from my monastery who was last seen in Orlane."
Mar 15, 2026 6:30 pm
Berthold observed the assembled travellers as they greeted Olpert Razorsson, presenting their credentials or establishing their relation to other members of the guild.
"Greetings, Master Razorsson, this is quite the operation you are establishing here, " he stated rather formally, as would be natural for a first exchange with an unknown, but noteworthy stranger.
"I am Berthold of Dunsdale, at your service. You have other groups in Orlane or thereabouts? Who would be their captain, or leader?"

Antonius stood examining the room and the people with the quiet deliberation of a man long accustomed to watch halls and council rooms rather than guild gatherings. The lamplight caught faintly along the polished head of the warhammer at his side as he inclined his head first toward the figure who clearly commanded the room. "Master Razorsson," he said respectfully to Olpert Razorsson, "my thanks for receiving us."
Turning then to the others gathered in the guild hall of the Dungeon Busters in Hochoch, he offered a polite nod. "For those I have not yet had the pleasure to meet—my name is Antonius Block. Once of the city watch in Niole Dra, now a Karuth in service to Wee Jas. I have come north seeking honest work where the dead are restless and the living have need of steady hands." His gaze moved calmly across Sora, and Kazzak before settling again on the group as a whole.
"It seems, by fortune or by the will of my lady, that such work may be found here among you." He pauses only briefly before adding, "By the Ruby Lady I was guided here, so if this is your first charge I am happy to seek these bandits."

"Good to know you all," the grizzled old fighter-turned-administrator looks at each of the new adventurers with an appraising eye. He seems to like what he sees.
Olpert nods to Dell. "I was going to ask if you were related. The two of you must get mistaken for each other all the time. Yes, Chase is with the group that I mentioned is heading to Orlane." At Sora's interjection, he responds: "...and Aanbo is with that group, too."
At Berthold's address, Olpert grimaces but lets the 'Master' comment slide. "We don't really have captains in our organization. I track requests, opportunities, and coordinate the work of different Dungeon Busters, but each team is pretty autonomous and can decide their own leadership structure. As far as I know, that group hasn't determined a 'leader' as such."
But when Antonius repeats the 'Master' comment so quickly after Berthold, Olpert shakes his head. "I take no pupils and I own no slaves. I'm just an adventurer who was lucky enough to survive longer than most, good with a sword and a bow but I wouldn't claim to be a master of any weapon. Just call me Olpert, or Razorsson. That's my name."
But to the rest of Antonius' statement, he scratches one of the long scars that criss-cross his face. "The group I mentioned has encountered undead in the Dim Forest a few times. You might encounter them, or perhaps discover something about the bandits, on your way to join our people in Orlane."

A brawny, wild-maned, black-haired Dwarf raises his calloused hand and addresses Olpert with an older term. "Mægester Razzorson, thank you for the opportunity with the Dungeon Busters. I, Kazzak Thunderblood, of Clan SkyForge, entrust my sword and my knowledge of underground activities to you in the desire that they will prove valuable in the future."
He sounds more formal than his appearance would indicate. "If we find bandits, they will trouble the good people here no more."

"I see," Berthold responded, seeing the grizzled man’s discomfort with honorifics. He’d met many a sergeant-at-arms that would have reacted in a similar manner.
He adjusted easily to match the man’s preferred manner of speech.
"Olpert, what can you tell us of this vanguard’s mission? What is it that your company is looking into, in Orlane?"

"So the bandits are around Orlane? Is that what they were looking into?" dell was thinking to himself Chase would have had no problem finding bandits he was a boundary warden and that was part of what they did. "Are there any contacts for us to talk with in Orlane master Razorsson?" Seeing it kinda made him uneasy Dell thought he would mess with him a bit.

Olpert twitches as Kazzak both addresses him as 'Mægester' AND gets his name wrong. But he shrugs. "I'd be a terrible manager if I let you all rush off now," Olpert says, very aware that the new adventurers are dirty and tired after traveling all day to reach Hochoch. "You'd fall asleep before you even got to the Dim. Let's get some food in you and meet some of the others. Tomorrow you can set out fresh and have the full day ahead of you for travel." Despite any objections the more impatient adventurers might raise, Olpert leads the group back to the Inn of Eternal Rest. Having dismissed the construction crew for the day, the dwarf and the human tag along and introduce themselves.

The walk back through the streets was brief but lively, with Olpert, now simply Boss in Antonius’s mind, setting a steady pace that spoke of long habit and quiet authority. By the time they reached the Inn of Eternal Rest, the lamps were lit and the common room hummed with low conversation. Antonius took his seat among his new companions, Berthold with his noble composure, Amnestria already half-lost in thought, Sora and Kazzak speaking in low dwarven tones, and Dell watching everything with a careful eye.
When food was brought, Antonius accepted a simple meal and a cup of water, declining the offered ale without comment or ceremony. His restraint was practiced, almost ritualistic. As the others settled in, he began to ask questions, not idly, but with the quiet precision of a former watchman. Turning to each companion he gives them his full attention, "Where did you trained? What roads did you traveled? What dangers did you already faced?" His tone remained courteous, even warm at times, but there was purpose behind every word.
To Antonius, this was not merely conversation. It was assessment.
Because if they were to face the rising darkness together under the banner of the Dungeon Busters, he intended to know exactly who stood beside him when steel was drawn, and when death came calling.

Sora shrugs, taking a mouthful. "Sora Highforge," she says flatly, almost annoyed. "I trained among the dwarven monks at Clan Stonereaver east of Moradinath Mor. The path I took here was fraught with danger, to be certain. You haven't lived until you've gone one-on-one with an angry mountain bear!" She rolls up her left sleeve to reveal a fresh set of claw marks. "Bruin wanted to make dinner of me, but I convinced him that catching fish was easier."

"I am Kazzak Thunderblood of Clan SkyForge. My clan is known to many as a provider of fine metal crafts.* I traveled here without incident from our home in the mountains west of the Dim Forest. We often battle a tribe of kobolds whose squads move too close to us in the caverns beneath the mountains. Our biggest foes in recent history were a group of hill giants."

Dell after finishing his meal will down his ale and look at Antonius"You know the name but for the others I am Dell Bandstone. I come from Agaden Reach and I am a boundary warden. My country has fallen because of treachery and that is why I must find my brother Chase. My specialty is the shadows." Dell will then move off to see if he can find a dice game.
Mar 18, 2026 7:52 pm
Kazzak finishes his second ale before while others are on their first. "Razorsson mentioned undead in the forest. Does anyone know anything about that?" This time, the Dwarf was careful to correctly pronounce the name of their new boss. Switching from Dwarvish to Keolish does not come easy for him.

On the way to the Inn of Eternal Rest, the jovial dwarf and the somewhat awkward human reply to Antonius' questions.
"Morgran's the name!" the dwarf laughs, "Aye: servant of Kord, imbiber o' drink, wooer o' ladies, an' negotiator fer the Dungeon Busters. A bunch o' us came east to Hochoch a few weeks ago, rescued the miller's family from bandits, an' caught that villain minstrel from stealing away the Jarl fambly. Dangers? Hmm. The bandits i' the mill were pretty bad, but I'd say the biggest danger I faced so far was tha' damned owlbear, what nearly killed Klak. Since Olpert arrived, he's had me lookin' fer a place to build our hall, an' talkin' w' the locals to buy it so's we can bilt it. Ye've seen how far we've come. Gettin' close to puttin' on the roof."
The human stops walking and bows deeply. "It is a pleasure for this one to make your acquaintance. This one hights Elderblade: that is what my family is called. Those who raised me gave me the name Durren. This one has been working for the Dungeon Busters since this one returned with the blackguard Jonbon, as his esteemed colleague Morgran has mentioned."

Antonius listened to each of them with quiet attentiveness, his expression measured but not unkind, weighing their words as much as their tone.
To Sora he gave a faint approving nod. "A mountain bear is an honest foe, Mistress Highforge. It tests strength and resolve without deceit—there is merit in that."
To Kazzak he inclined his head slightly deeper, "Discipline and coordination win battles long before they begin. I would trust a shield line built on such thinking."
When Dell rose to leave, Antonius simply said, "May your search bear fruit, Warden Bandstone. Shadows serve best when guided by purpose."
He had already spoken his regard earlier to Morgran’s bold spirit and Durren’s careful formality, and now, as the conversation settled, Antonius placed one hand over the ruby symbol of Wee Jas. His tone shifted—firm, almost solemn. "If this Dim Forest harbors unrest among the dead. That is no small matter." He bowed his head briefly, murmuring a prayer under his breath. "All things are owed their proper end. I will see that whatever stirs there is returned to its rightful rest." When he looked up again, his gaze moved across the group with steady resolve. "If we are to stand together as Dungeon Busters, then let that be one of the first balances we restore."

The evening meal is festive, with hearty welcomes from dwarf Klak and human Albertus, while Karliel demonstrates the elven side of his ancestry by playing delightful music. Rosemary has developed a close rapport with the Thornhills such that the halfling joins them in the kitchen to help bake some cakes for the newcomers. Little gnome Xana seems almost childlike, until she starts telling shockingly bawdy jokes. While friendly, Kragga and Thacogygax are less outgoing. This is because half-orc Kragga is most comfortable having in-depth conversations with a single person. Thacogygax, the enormously tall blue-skinned reptile man - something called a 'thraakon' - is aware how much he still stands out like a sore thumb and struggles with the language, so he chooses his words carefully.
Mar 20, 2026 11:54 am
For a few hours after supper, Antonius moved easily through the warmth and noise of the Inn of Eternal Rest, his manner polite and measured as he spoke with those gathered. He exchanged courteous words with Klak and Albertus, listened briefly to Karliel’s lilting music, and inclined his head in quiet amusement at Xana’s unexpectedly crude humor.
He spoke little, but listened well—offering a steady presence that drew conversation rather than demanded it. In time, he sought out Amnestria Elyphara, his tone shifting to one of genuine curiosity as he asked of her studies—how she shaped arcane energies, whether she favored structure or intuition, and what she made of magic that lingered near death and memory. When she, or any nearby, asked of his own devotion, Antonius answered simply, resting a hand over the ruby symbol of Wee Jas: "Death has always walked beside me—sometimes as warning, sometimes as mercy. I follow because I have learned to listen."
As the hour grew late, nearing the stillness of night, Antonius quietly excused himself, stepping out into the cool dark of Hochoch to find a quiet gravesite. There, beneath the dim light of the stars, he knelt in solemn prayer, murmuring rites for the dead and for those yet to fall. When he returned, the inn had softened to low voices and fading firelight, and without ceremony, he retired to his room, seeking rest for the trials yet to come.

After hanging out a bit and doing some dicing Dell will retire to his room because he wants to be well rested for the start of their journey. He will bid everyone he met a good evening. He is a bit restless because he just has to find Chase. He hopes he is well and they will be reunited soon.

Sora doesn't partake of anything alcoholic and retires early to be up before everyone else arises. She performs her morning katas in her room before coming down for a small breakfast.
Mar 21, 2026 7:50 pm
The next day dawns; the adventurers emerge from their communal rooms (there are 4 beds in each of the private rooms), break their fast with the Thornhills and the other Dungeon Busters, and then bid them goodbye as Olpert escorts the six of you through the town's streets and the South Gate to the guild hall. The carpenters are already at work as you arrive, but they move to another part of the building that is coming together as Olpert enters a "room" to use as a meeting space.
Mar 22, 2026 3:40 am
"Let me tell you about the group I'm sending you all to join." Olpert looks at the party members. He doesn't need to repeat Sora's and Dell's connections to the other heroes; everyone has heard about it last night at the very least. "Your friends Aanbo and Chase are two of our most seasoned adventurers. They're with the group I'm sending you to join, along with Myrtha and Theran. They have a few fresh recruits with them already - Morton, Jonel, and Arya - so you'll be in good company when you join up with them in the village of Orlane."
Olpert looks seriously at you. "Joseph disappeared during a previous mission, which also resulted in the demise of one of our members, Reptile. There's definitely danger in Orlane; many of the people there - including the Constable and his deputies - seem to be part of a cult that is secretly working with troglodytes to abduct people and steal their belongings. These cultists can sometimes be identified by a green spiral symbol they wear or have marked on their bodies - through tattoos or scars. The danger is spreading - bandits, troglodytes, and cult members have all approached Hochoch through the forest, trying to abduct people. So far we've managed to stop these attempts, but we have to put a permanent stop to their activities. Orlane is the farming center of this part of the world, and the residents of Hochoch, Hookhill, and many other communities in the region are going to start to starve soon if food production doesn't resume."
"I sent the seven of them to Orlane to retrieve Joseph. They're also to see what they can do to avenge Reptile and put a stop to the cult, but when they find Joseph, I'm sure they'll head to back to rest and resupply. Come to think of it, you might meet the seven of them on Cecily's Road as they're coming back here, bringing Joseph and Lyrel back with them to report. They're wise enough to not push themselves too hard. That's key to success and a long life in this profession - know your limits and take breaks. Follow their example: don't let your anger drive you to rush into danger when you're not prepared for it. Yes, the region is in danger, but doing a good thorough job, even if it takes time to rest and recover, is better than rushing and getting yourselves captured or killed; dead heroes don't help anybody, live ones do."
He sighs. "But let's focus on what's in front of you - the Dim Forest. You might have to deal with some undead in the forest, and there's still that damned owlbear hunting in the region. Stick to the road and set a watch when you camp overnight, and you should be fine until you get to Orlane. When you get there, if you don't find the other Dungeon Busters right away, look for the elves, the former adventurer Alan Clayborn, or Ramne the hermit: they're all our allies and opposed to the cult.""Are there any questions?"

Antonius stood with his usual composed stillness before Olpert Razorsson, one gauntleted hand resting lightly on the pommel of his warhammer. "Boss, if I may," he began evenly, "these spiral-marked cultists—have any shown signs of resisting divine influence, or reacting… poorly to consecrated ground?" His eyes narrowed slightly in thought. "And the troglodytes—are they acting as allies, or thralls? I have seen such creatures bound before by darker powers."
He paused briefly, choosing his next words with care. "One more matter—this disappearance of Joseph. Was there any indication he was taken alive with intent, or simply lost in the chaos?" Antonius inclined his head slightly. "If we are to walk into Orlane, I would prefer to understand not just what we face—but how it thinks."

Amnestria's wagon-lag had not abated by the time the group reached Hochoch, and thankfully it appeared no one expected her to be sociable. All she needed to do was present Olpert with a letter of recommendation (from her parents, of all people) and grunt her acceptance of the suggested task; the realization that more travel would be required had not yet come to her.
As the new day dawns, Amnestria slogs her way through breakfast. Her lower back still aches, and she doubts the heels of her feet will cease their screaming. She stops by the general store with what remains of her coin purse and spends a long time looking at the selection of tents, but ultimately opts for a simple bedroll to minimize weight. She also purchases a waterskin so that she won't have to rely on her companions like she did during the first journey. Finally, she buys a set of traveler's clothes for warmth and comfort rather than simple fashion.
Feeling a bit more like herself as she stands with the group of new Dungeon Busters, Amnestria listens patiently to the questions and jots the answers in her book for later reference. Her voice croaks a question, her first words since arriving in Hochoch, "When we meet with the veteran members, how should we identify ourselves so that they know we are among their ranks?"
Kazzak feels refreshed n the morning. He thinks about last night's conversations with the other Dungeon Busters -- snippets of life outside the clan and the mountains -- and notes to himself how routine his life has become and how much he wants to succeed over whatever challenges lie ahead.
He understands Olpert's advice. One task at a time, he thinks. Like mining one layer at a time. Don't go too deep too fast. Be prepared for the unknown.
He asks Olpert, "Is there a wagon or cart we can borrow for our travels? I'm an experienced driver. If we find the lost people, they might be hurt and not able to walk."

Berthold had asked: "Olpert, what can you tell us of this vanguard’s mission? What is it that your company is looking into, in Orlane?"Quote:
"Boss, if I may," Antonius asked evenly, "these spiral-marked cultists—have any shown signs of resisting divine influence, or reacting… poorly to consecrated ground?"Quote:
Antonius asked a follow-up question, eyes narrowed. "And the troglodytes—are they acting as allies, or thralls? I have seen such creatures bound before by darker powers."Quote:
Antonius chose his next words with care. "One more matter—this disappearance of Joseph. Was there any indication he was taken alive with intent, or simply lost in the chaos?" Quote:
Amnestria asks: "When we meet with the veteran members, how should we identify ourselves so that they know we are among their ranks?"Olpert rubs his neck for a moment, exhales, and then grins. "All that said, I'm still getting the sense that some of you would like to have some kind of team identification, just for a sense of camaraderie. I get it; team spirit is a good thing. So I've got some of our people working on a design; I hope to have something ready in the next few days. Hopefully we'll have pins or something by the time you all return from Orlane."

Amnestria nods. "Your words carry wisdom, Razorson. We shall be careful when dealing with anyone in Orlane, and hopefully we will cross paths with allies before we meet any enemies."
She looks to her companions. "I am ready to depart when you are." She glances down at her new boots, which the merchant told her would be better for long travel.

"We could use the wain to bring some cult members back, too. Perhaps the town clerics or wizards can use their magic to get useful information from them if we cannot."

Dell looks at the group"Don't worry about id my brother Chase is obvious. Plus there has always been a sense between the two of when we are close to each other."

Antonius listened without interruption, his expression steady, absorbing each detail as Olpert Razorsson spoke. When the answers were done, he gave a slow, thoughtful nod. "Then the spiral is merely a sign," he said evenly, "and the will behind it lies elsewhere." His fingers tapped once, lightly, against the haft of his warhammer. "But those tunnels beneath the inn in Orlane… that is where the truth will be found. Movement, concealment, indoctrination—everything flows through them. If Joseph yet lives, it is likely he passed that way." His tone sharpened slightly—not with emotion, but with focus. "We will find those tunnels." Then, after a brief pause, his voice returned to its usual calm. "As for the Dim Forest… the dead there are a separate matter, but no less pressing. Rest denied becomes a problem that spreads." He inclined his head faintly. "I suggest we should keep to the road, deal with what rises, and press on to the inn. One step at a time, Boss—but always forward."

Looking at Olpert"Should we openly enter Orlane or should we go in covertly? If they see me they will mistake me for Chase. "
Mar 26, 2026 1:44 am
Olpert responds to Dell's final question before the party leaves. "That's up for you to decide. Go in openly and the other Dungeon Busters will find you that much faster, and our allies might also see you and approach, since you so strongly resemble your brother. But then again, they might be suspicious of you; to hear the heroes who've been there tell it, everyone there is fearful and reluctant to trust. On the other hand, hiding will increase the likelihood that you escape detection by the cult. It will also make everything take longer, and make you seem more suspicious to the people that you do meet."

"With this many in our group, we should be a bit more open," suggests Amnestria. "Make them think we are merchants, if we have a wagon, or just normal travelers."

With Olpert's instructions, the group continued to discuss their plans as they set out to Rufus' workshop. Rufus is happy to rent a wagon to adventurers affiliated with the Heroes of Hochoch, but times being as hard as they are (what with the food scarcity and the banditry driving up prices for everyone), he insists on charging the Dungeon Busters this time. You also get the sense from his veiled comments that he's a little concerned about loaning the wagon for free, given how long it took to return it last time (6 days longer than he'd expected to be without his wagon and team), and that his oxen were nearly slaughtered.
OOC:
Note that a purchase of wagon and two oxen would be 115 gold eagles normally, so renting is the way to go. Each of you can roll a CHR (Persuasion) check to see what daily rate you negotiated with Rufus for the rental. You're confident that Olpert will cover any reasonable rental fees you incur on your first outing, as long as they're not too extravagant.Mar 26, 2026 2:15 am
Amnestria is unfamiliar with negotiating rates, having been raised in a household where other people took care of that, but she tries her best. She wonders if that's why the dry goods merchant seemed overly happy to have sold her that set of traveler's clothes.

Sora leaves the negotiations to those better suited for such. Her talents lie in solving problems with force, not negotiation.

Antonius stood calmly in the yard of Rufus’s workshop, one hand resting on the broad yoke of the oxen as he inspected them with a practiced, appraising eye. "You’ve reason to be cautious," he admitted evenly, glancing toward the wainwright. "A man who lends without memory soon finds himself without property." His gaze returned to Rufus, steady but not unfriendly. "But I am not those who came before. I give you my word—as a former watchman, and as a servant of Wee Jas—that what is borrowed will be returned in proper condition, or recompense will be made."
He let that settle a moment before adding, with a faint, measured hint of pressure, "Order, debt, and rightful return are not matters my faith takes lightly." Antonius then gestured lightly toward the wagon. "So—perhaps we might agree on a fair price that reflects both your caution… and my reliability."

The group manages to talk Rufus into agreeing to a rate of 90 cubs a day. With that, he provides an open-bed wagon and the team of two oxen to draw it. The wagon's bed is just large enough for eight adventurers and their standard gear to ride, crammed in together. The buckboard is wide enough for two to sit side-by-side (or three if they stow their packs and larger implements/weapons in the bed).
This negotiation has taken about an hour; the party sets out for Hochoch's East Gate and the bridge across the Realstream river mid-morning. As they go, a few fellow Dungeon Busters and several citizens see them off, stopping what they're doing to walk alongside the wagon, wish them success, and wave farewell. Charming Lienne Vereel is particularly effusive, but everyone has already been warned by Olpert of her propensity for gossip. Getting no traction with the new adventurers, she is led away by Durren Elderblade, the stiffly formal adventurer who acts like an elf. Despite his stilted awkwardness, it is clear to most of you even after only knowing them a day that he has become smitten with the vivacious young woman, though she is baffled and a little irritated by him. They wave goodbye as the wagon crosses the bridge and onto Cecily's Road.
There is very little traffic here now; all the farmers left before dawn, and as the road turns northeast toward the distant woods, each of you notices that no one else seems to be heading to the Dim Forest.

Hours pass as the trip continues and the oxen plod along; there is plenty of time for the party to plan and discuss things. But I'm going to wrap up this thread soon, starting a new thread as the party leaves the civilized region of the Duchy for the wilds of the forest. So I encourage you to carry out in-character conversations/planning in the Side Conversations thread.
