"It may be so. The question now is, as I see it, three-fold. First, contact Voss again and assess his observations of the free captains and how they come and go. As part of this fold, we should also view the satellite imagery to determine how long the captains stay on the ground before leaving. Second, we should consider contacting Captain Verik. However, here is where we must be cautious. Too much or too little information could radically change the balance of power. Finally, we need to just go down and let things happen."

"I agree in principle with that. We've talked about clocks running and when they start and at some point we just have to let them start, but I'd like to have as much in place on our end as possible before we do. Contacting Verik certainly starts a clock, though maybe not the worst one. He operates with privilege of some sort amongst the tribes, but that also means he is likely to be trading information and news of our arrival is valuable information. I think we can ask Voss for his best estimate of Verik's trustwortyiness to act as a conduit or contact. Voss hasn't had a lot of interaction with him but more than we have. Good idea about the coming and going of the Free Captains, too. We know that the Niparoo seem to operate on a schedule, whether they are interacting with the Alejia or not, but getting a sense of the free traders, and if there are any others that have come by even once is a good idea."

"Well Captain you did what to see if we can fly the cutter 'by wire' up to the Harrier. For that I require to talk directly to Voss on the configuration and to see if the Cutter has enough juice.....and" she pauses.
"... Are any one of you certified to remotely pilot the Cutter"
OOC:
One of the PCs as a remote operator skill but not pilot. A pilot-2 skill will suffice....but it appears that the only Pilot-2 is Captain Halsson who is under care in the AutoDoc. Therefore a Task chain is in order - which I don't like b/c it is a complicated rule set. This requires Dr. Shone making a successful remote Ops skill check (Ave target) to establish the connection and oversea the 'fly-by-wire' part of the operations, and then one of the player-character pilots making a successful difficult piloting skill check. Dr. Shone's remote Ops skill check will influence the modifier for the piloting roll.
If the players have other ideas of suggestions for this I am all ears

NPCing"It appears those 'Free Captain ships come in very 2-3 months. They land discharge cargo, then loading can seems to take several days to 3-4 weeks. I would assume that finding profitable cargo for these 'Free Captains' is not so straight forward. I would also guess they maybe acting as their own brokers, except from Voss's report on the 'Free Captains' that Captain Alira Cox using the Xá’kai as a broker. Anyway they do have a quick turn around after leaving the system suggests they are going to a close by world. Just guessing, but the only close by world is Victoria. A belter system. "
He looks at Wilber, Bohdie and Chaala and finishes
"But to answer the original questions Bohdie asked, they rotate in and out every 2-3 months."

NPC due to player absence "But aren't we tipping our hand anyway if we fly the Cutter up here or we land the Azure Voyager down there? I get we don't want to reveal the presence of the Voyager before we have to, but by flying the cutter up and back down with more people is going to raise Alejia suspicions won't it?"

"If we're sticking to the card game metaphor, one way we show that we're in the game, the other we tip our hand a little more and let others see what we're holding. We have no choice on the former, we have some control on the latter and we can chose, to some extent, which cards we show. Of course, if we can't manage to fly the cutter remotely, we're left with either sneaking into the port, which seems like it could be taken as hostile, or at least non-friendly, intent, or we land with Voyager. Either way, I think we need a report from Voss on the flight worthiness of the cutter, since I'm not inclined to leave Voyager on the ground any longer than it takes to disembark. I know that could also be taken as non-friendly, but too much friendly and we get to be where Dominicus is, though maybe not even with the same tribe."
Chaala turns to Edrin. "Your take on the message is spot on. We'll also need a report on the flight worthiness of the Cutter, but make sure to phrase it so that it shows we expect and have confidence he has done all he can. Maybe ask if he needs any components he has not been able to source since he's been stuck there."

Edrin
"Alright… here we go."
Then he keys the transmitter.
"Scout-Engineer Voss, this is Azure Voyager. We appreciate your report on the Free Captains. Two follow-ups. First — based on your interaction with him, what is your assessment of Captain Verik’s reliability as a conduit or intermediary should negotiations become necessary? Second — please report on the flight readiness of the cutter. We are evaluating whether the cutter could safely reach orbit if required. If any components or supplies are needed that you have been unable to source locally, advise. End message."
The transmission flashes outward in a narrow encrypted burst lasting less than a second before the transmitter falls silent again. Then the waiting begins. Several minutes pass before the receiver chirps. Edrin leans forward slightly as the encrypted reply begins resolving across the display.

Regarding Captain Verik. My contact with him has been limited, but he appears more comfortable interacting with the Alejia than the other traders. He speaks with them directly and without intermediaries more often than the others. That suggests some level of working familiarity, though whether that familiarity extends to trust is another matter. Frontier traders survive by adapting to local systems, not necessarily by respecting them. If you approach him, I believe word will eventually reach the Alejia. Whether that happens quickly or slowly depends on who is watching. I would assume the other traders will notice first. What they choose to do with that information is difficult to predict.
Regarding the cutter. Systems remain operational. I have kept power usage minimal for the last several months — life support, passive sensors, and communications only. Fuel reserves remain largely intact. From a mechanical standpoint the cutter should be capable of reaching orbit. Navigation and launch systems are functional. However… there is one complication. I cannot fly the thing. My pilot rating is theoretical at best and five months on the ground has not improved it. If the plan is to bring the cutter up to you, it will either require a pilot or remote guidance from orbit. End report.
A few seconds pass before another line appears on the display.
For what it’s worth — the cutter is in better shape than its pilot.

Amara
"Engineer Voss, this is Chief Engineer Amara Troulin aboard Azure Voyager. Let’s check a few things. Confirm the cutter’s flight control bus is responding normally. I’ll transmit a remote command package that will allow us to link into the guidance system from orbit. Once that handshake is established, we can run the ascent profile from here. All you’ll need to do is strap in and make sure nothing catches fire."

GM Comment: Now - @Stalker05 will have to make a remote Ops roll and one of the characters will have to make a Pilot Roll.

Virel listens silently to the others. Unfortunately, ship operations are out of his scope of expertise. Therefore, he stands out of the way and waits for when he could offer some actual aid.
The closest Virel has to any sort of piloting skill beyond jack-of-all-trades is Small Watercrafts but that would hardly work here. He is more than willing to aid but no real shipboard skills to help out.

Chaala smiles thinly, "Ok, we have options. None of them are perfect, but better to have choices than none. If we take it slowly, there's little risk we damage the cutter but we give more time for reaction on the ground and there will be reaction on the ground. Option two is we make radio contact with Verik, I'd still want to be prepared to remote the cutter out if that shows signs of going badly. Even if he doesn't sell the information of our arrival to the Alejia, one of the less connected Captains may figure it out and try to leverage it for better positioning with one of the tribes. The third option is bringing Voyager in, but I still want to hold that in reserve unless we come up with a plan where it's the better option. I don't think it will impress the locals as representing a greater threat than, say, the Niparoo whose vessels are much larger. The Free Captains will likely recognize it's advanced design but that's of mixed value."
Apr 15, 2026 2:40 am
"Option one or two would both alter the balance on the ground," Virel says after a moment. "And if that balance shifts badly, it may be the others who bear the cost. If our objective remains the recovery of all personnel alive, then speaking with Verik may presently be the least disruptive course, even if it carries its own risks."
A slight pause.
"Whatever path we choose it would be good to know where Dominicus and the others are held, or protected, before events force us to act quickly."

"We will continue with the traffic analysis and data capture for as long as we can, even as we pursue one of the avenues, but we won't be one hundred percent sure from that. If we've got a best guess, or a selection of them, we can use that to see if Verik is trying to decieve us when we inevitably ask him where he thinks they are. I don't know how long it will take, though, and I don't think we can wait."
